R: [Samba] Username length
Hi, I had the same problem, I also needed : 1) the username should begin with a number 2) the group name should be longer than 16 characters. So I modified the standard "useradd" e "groupadd" (rpm shadow-util ) to fullfil these requirements. I hope this can help. [Samba] Authenticating against two different domains
We have a number of unix/vms boxes that we have samba shares setup on and we authenticate users against an NT PDC in our domain. We now have a requirement to allow users from another domain to access those shares as well as users from our domain. The two NT domains are trusted. Is this possible, and if so, how do I go about setting it up ? [Samba] Auto mounting NT shared Home Directories
I have set up samba 2.2.3a with winbind to join SuSE linux 7.3 machines into our NT 4 domain, but would like to be able to set up Linux thin client machines to allow transparent use of either windows or Linux desktops. To accheve this I need to be able to access our Home directory shares from both systems, the best way for us to go at the moment is to find a way of getting linux to automount the users home directory on logon. All our users have a share on one of three NT servers which coresponds to their username. What I would like to do is find some way of on logon /home/(whatever) is mapped to a smb share of //server/(whatever)$. as we have 1200 user accounts setting this up needs to be rule based! What is the best way to proceed? Thanks Rob Keeling Network Manager Queen Elizabeth`s Grammar School Ashbourne

[Samba] NT MD4 password check failed
Hello All, Well, I've admitted defeat. I've installed Samba 2.2.3a on a Solaris 7 machine and am trying to connect to it from a Win2K SP2 PC. I am using encrypted passwords. The same user (darren) exists on the pc (called 'plm') and the samba server ('sparky2'). The password for this user is the same on the PC, and the /etc/shadow and /apps/samba/private/smbpasswd files on sparky2. I've tried compiling samba with support for shadow passwords (--with-shadow) but it seems to make no difference. When I type 'net view \\sparky2' from the PC, I receive a "System Error 5 has occurred. Access is denied." message. Nothing I have tried will change this. [Samba] The infamous read_socket_data(478) error
> All it's telling you is that the client disconnected. We don't > know why. We could change the message Samba gives when the > client does this but it doesn't change the fact it's something > the client does. > > Jeremy. > > -- Jeremy: I thought the following may interest you. I have just recently upgraded two client sites from RH 7.1 running Samba 2.07-36 to RH 7.2 running Samba 2.2.1a-4. Site A runs an ERP system with some decent sized files, 50+ MB totalling about 1.2GB. I have also created some adhoc reports using an ODBC driver and to my shame Access :) on a Windows ME client. Before the upgrade all was working well. After the upgrade all appeared to be working well. The day to day ERP system has not missed a beat, well not enough to be noticeable anyway for about two weeks. Well two days ago I tried to produce one of the adhoc reports and got the above error. The Access database consists of a linked table and some imported tables. The linked table still functions correctly but if I try and import or create a new link I get the above error. I have tried a few other workstations Windows ME and Win98 and get the same error. I also installed a Netraverse Virtual PC on the Linux Samba server and it exhibited exactly the same behaviour as the physical PC's??? It is 100% reproducible, if I use the ERP system then the system functions as it should. As soon as I try and use Access and the ODBC driver to get at the ERP data Samba reports the above message and Access complains about the object no longer being valid (because the Connection is reset of course). What may also be of interest to you is that when you try and import a file the driver opens a single 20KB~30KB file containing a flat file listing all the tables in the database (Its a DataFlex system), this takes a good 70-90 secs, but does eventually display the list of tables (.dat files on the Samba server) to choose from, of course the system is dead by this stage. Prior to the upgrade this was almost instantaneous. The client machine config:- Windows ME, 128MB RAM Netgear 10/100 MB NIC Access '97 The database consists of 1 linked and three imported files, its size ~210MB when populated. If you would like further information about my configuration then feel free to email me. Your thoughts would be appreciated as well as any advice :) Regards Wayne Sheehan PS. I have just run another test. When I import the data I rename the the old ones till I have the new ones. If I rename the tables back the Access database runs like a dream remembering that one of the tables is a link. I think this discounts NIC cards/Cables etc as Data and Access Database both reside on Samba shares. But if I try and add a new linked table or import a table things go awry. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
Re: [Samba] Print Command
The print command is the exact command samba runs when you request it to do a print job. What command is in /tmp/run? What do you have for your printing = parameter? Keep things simple. Try something like: /usr/bin/lpr -PRealPrintQueueName %s as your print command. It is best to include the entire path for your print command. Make sure you have the right printing= parameter for your system. [Samba] Release 2.2.3a - NT User Character Validation
Hello Samba Developers, After looking through the source files for 2.0.7, 2.0.9, 2.2.0, and 2.2.3a, it appears that a problems was introduced for us at the most recent revision. Since our mainframe IDs spawn our Novell IDs which in turn spawn our NT IDs, the grandfathered naming convention exists: A#LAST the A represents location, the "#" a is a separator, and the "LAST" is the first five characters of your last name (generally). The samba NT ID validation takes my NT ID, G#GAUGH and changes it to G_GAUGH. This will not validate against the NT domain because the G_GAUGH NT ID is not valid. We made the following change in .source/smbd/reply.c: diff reply.c.orig reply.c 852c852 < alpha_strcpy(user, user, ". _-$", sizeof(user)); --- > alpha_strcpy(user, user, ". _-$#", sizeof(user)); Thanks for the product! RE: [Samba] winbind stops ? hangs ?
This winbind dying thing has been fixed in 2.2.4 but you'll have to use the CVS until it is offically released (next week ?). As far as I know there is a still a moderate memory leak in it so I just stop and start it each morning. I have a second server which is running 2.2.3a and use a cron script which does a 'getent passwd' every minute and reloads winbind if it has failed. Reloads about six times a day typically. [Samba] Using Virtual Users with Samba
Hello, I have finally got Samba up and running in a basic config. But I was wondering, most modern UNIX/LINUX software these days (qmail, proftpd, postfix, and more) allow you to get user to login and then have the authentication come from some other method, therefore removing the need for users to have system accounts on the server. Is it possible to have a similair "virtual" user system with samba. Perhaps other users would be interested in such a setup. Re: [Samba] Using Virtual Users with Samba
Not exactly sure. I suppose one way (although very inefficient) would be to implement a single shell account for all virutal users, then using some form of database backing your store the relevent permissions and owner / group of the files. I saw one program that implemented this (I think it was one of the mail servers but I cannot be shore) in a similair way. As I said probably very inefficient, but its a start. - Original Message - From: "Jerry Cain" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Lee" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, April 12, 2002 8:19 PM Subject: RE: [Samba] Using Virtual Users with Samba > How would one define permissions for virtual users? > > Jerry > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On > Behalf Of Lee > Sent: Friday, April 12, 2002 12:14 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [Samba] Using Virtual Users with Samba > > > Hello, > > I have finally got Samba up and running in a basic config. Re: [Samba] Using Virtual Users with Samba
Implementing this type of support into Samba doesn't make a lot of sense, simpily due to what Samba does... file sharing w/ fine grained permissions. Applications like Email, where you may have hundreds of thousands of POP users is a different situation, b/c there is no need for file level permissions on the email-- as only the MTA and the POP server ever have access to the file. Implementing "virtual" users would require building a lot of redundant information into a database that the filesystem already does for free. And in the end... what advantage would there be for implementing virtual users for Samba? Come On April fools day was two weeks ago. You missed the correct date!
[Samba] Windows 2000 and domain users
First the details: Samba 2.2.3a running on Solaris 8 set up as a PDC. Various systems running Windows 95/98/NT 4.0. I've had absolutly no serious problems running Samba in this configuration for the last couple of years. I've upgraded Samba as the new versions have come out, and now need to integrate some new Win2k boxes. Problem is, when I add the new machines to the domain, the group "DOMAIN\unix_group.2147483404" gets added to both the Administrators group and Users group. So domain users start with Administrator rights! If I remove the "DOMAIN\unix_group.2147483404" group from the Administrators group, it mucks thinks up bad enough to require a reinstall of Win2k. I'd like to think that this is not a required feature of using Samba with Win2k. I would like to restrict users to the same rights as normal users, so I can lock down who can install software on each individual machine. As it stands now, I can't do that. I'm including the global section of my smb.conf, if it helps. [Samba] I just wanted to comment on what a great job the Samba team is doing!
I just finished setting up a WAN domain with 3 Samba servers (1 PDC and 2 BDCs - as per the suggestion in the documentation) running on FreeBSD. If there's any question about how well Samba works, let me answer that question: It works GREAT. You folks have really written a fantastic suite of software. Everyone who's ever contributed code or docs or anything should take a moment here and pat themselves on the back. A few details: 3 FreeBSD servers and a Mandrake Linux server all running Samba 2.2.3a (with the patch I posted yesterday to fix the minor "hide unreadable"/"admin users" bug) One of the FreeBSD servers acts as PDC, and propagates its userlists to the others via NIS, the smbpasswd file is propagated with rsync. The other servers are configured to act as BDCs for the domain, and with the wealth of configurability in Samba we are able to detect which part of the WAN a user is on and run an appropriate logon script. Windows 95, 98 and 2000 machines all participate in the domain. Any time we've ever had a problem, it was usually something Windows was doing wrong! When it was a Samba problem, we were able (thanks to the excellent docs) to fix it in minimal time. Once again, thanks to all who have taken time to create such a superior package! Thats funny - I thought the BDC functionality was only in HEAD?? Sorry for the question, i'm a newbie. RE: [Samba] I just wanted to comment on what a great job the Sambateam is doing!
Bill set his system up to propagate user authentication via NIS and via rsync'ing the smbpasswd on a routine basis. Samba HEAD will do it internally (that is, without external programs like NIS and rsync) using RPC calls. CVS-HEAD is the development branch of Samba -- it will eventually be Samba 3.0. CVS-SAMBA_2_2 is the current "bug-fix" tree -- it will soon (likely next week) be Samba 2.2.4. /tom --On Friday, April 12, 2002 18:53 -0400 Charles Marcus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on Behalf Of Bill Moran >> Sent: Friday, April 12, 2002 6:53 PM >> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >> >> I just finished setting up a WAN domain with 3 Samba servers >> (1 PDC and 2 BDCs - as per the suggestion in the documentation) >> running on FreeBSD. > > Thats funny - > > I thought the BDC functionality was only in HEAD?? > > Charles > > -- > To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the > instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Does anyone know if the fix I suggested for the "admin users"/"hide unreadable" bug did/will get committed (or has some other fix been applied?) Mostly, I'm curious. But it will also need to stay on top of this so I know whether or not to patch the next time I upgrade. -- Bill Moran Potential Technology http://www.potentialtech.com -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] EXCHANGE and SAMBA
Has anyone tried using samba as a PDC and setting up an EXCHANGE BDC or member server and had any luck with exchange resolving user names from samba. XP seems to resolve them fine, but I was wondering if anyone had tried it before. -- David W. Chapman Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Raintree Network Services, Inc. [Samba] Two questions: 'wbinfo -a' & NT/2k APW
Greetings, Brief preamble: this list is a fantastic resource. I've been lurking and have learned a lot, but I haven't seen anyone ask the following: First, my environment: a single Debian Linux (kernel 2.2.18) Samba server (version 2.2.2debian-2) in the midst of an NT 4 domain. I have successfully configured Winbindd such that my NT domain user names and groups are able to be used for all things Samba, and for console logon, as well. One problem is that when I try to use 'wbinfo -a' to test the domain password validation, I see the following: plaintext password authentication succeeded challenge/response password authentication failed Could not authenticate user DOMAIN+User%password with challenge/response Does anyone know why this may be? Or perhaps this is normal, and my lack of experience prevents me from seeing it as such? I have a wildly speculative hypothesis that this may be related to some difficulties we have been having using DOS LanMan clients with the same Samba server (I don't have enough details about those problems to ask about them... Yet). Another (smaller[?]) issue that I'm having with Winbind is the naming of groups. I have an NT Domain group called "Domain Admins" (surprise!), and yet, when I 'wbinfo -r DOMAIN+User' (to get the GIDs of a user's domain groups) and then input, for example, 'wbinfo -s `wbinfo -G 1`' (to convert GIDs to SIDs and then SIDs to human-readable group names) the resulting groups are labeled as: "DOMAIN+Domain Admins 2" and "DOMAIN+Domain Users 2"; and yet, when I use 'smbstatus' it shows group memberships for clients connected to shares without the trailing number. Is this an indication that Winbindd has twice mapped my domain groups to Linux GIDs? Am I overlooking something obvious (just not obvious to me)? OK, the second issue is more interesting (to me). I'm trying to set up a printer for use with my NT4 & 2k clients. I have CUPS set up as the spooling subsystem, and I have confirmed that it works properly. If I set 'disable spoolss = yes' then I can print successfully from 2k (haven't tested NT). I can even print when I set 'disable spoolss = no'. However, problems arise when trying to use the NT/2k Add Printer Wizard: it never appears in the Printers share on my server. When I tail the log.smbd I see: [TIMESTAMP] smbd/service.c:make_connection(239) [client hostname] ([client IP address]) couldn't find service ::{[mysterious SID]} (substitutions are surrounded by []) Finally, I tried resolving the SID in the log to a domain group or user, to no avail. My current thinking is that my domain group is not resolving properly to a Linux GID. In my smb.conf, I have 'printer admin = root,@"DOMAIN+Domain Admins". SWAT does not like those double quotes one bit, and I haven't confirmed that it's working at all (see above, as well). This is the point at which I have exhausted my Samba knowledge and cast myself on the mercy of this list. Anybody have any suggestions, hints, tips or recommendations on one or more of the above issues? [Samba] (no subject)
I was hoping to get a little help but if this is the incorrect forumn then I apologize, please disregard the rest of my message. Ok, for starters my webmail client ate my last message, so here I go again. I'm attemping to install a Samba 2.2.1a package onto openbsd 3.0. I downloaded the package from one of the OpenBSD mirrors. After using pkg_add to install samba, I have tried using the default config file as well as editing it. However, when I run smbclient -U% -L localhost which is supposed to list the file shares and server name (I think) I get an error message. SSL: Error error setting CA cert locations: error::lib(0): func(0):reason(0) followed by a message saying an interface was added followed by a listing of the shares IPC$ and ADMIN$, but no server is listed. (In contrast to the examples I've seen) I also tried smbpasswd -a username to create a user. In all situations, default config, modified config, using a username, I am unable to connect or even get a password prompt from windows 2000 while trying to connect to either the ip or the hostname. Yes, I have tried reading the man pages as well as the How-To on Samba's site. ANY help or direction to additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
