[Samba] KSambaPlugin 0.3a - Release ( Configuration tool for KDE3 )

2002-10-14 Thread Jan Schäfer

Hi,

I'm a developer of KSambaPlugin.
KSambaPlugin is a configuration tool for KDE 3.
It consists of a KControl Center Module for configuring nearly every SAMBA
option and a Konqueror properties dialog plugin for quick sharing of single
directories.
We have released a 0.3 alpha Version which is already very useful
(But not ready for critical usage)
We need help for testing the program, especially for the design of the dialogs
and for missing options.
As we are no professional SAMBA users we need some help.
Please send comments to improve the program.
KSambaPlugin is released under the GPL so it is free.

Hi,

I had some similar problem on my linux-box with 2.2.6pre2. The error box
gave me two possibilities: continue and break. On break no folder was
created, on continue the folder was created and usable. The problem with
my config was the parameter 'hide unreadable = Yes'. Deleting this brings
back the old behaviour.

[Samba] Don't know how to config after compiled the source code ?

2002-10-14 Thread Kevin Chan

Hi all,

After I compiled the source code (samba-2.2.5). I don't know where is the
smb.conf location and how to start the smb service.

* I find some directory on /usr/local/samba:

# cd /usr/local/samba
#
#binlibmanprivateswatvar

Would anyone can teach me a bit for my installation ?

Thanks and regards,
Kevin Chan

Yes ports are open on Linux , because Win98 and WinNT are working.
tcpdumping on the linux box i cannot see any packets going to port 137-139
from the XP machine. The XP machine is only sending packtes to 224.1.0.22
(srvloc.mcast.net -> wht the hell M$ is doing there ?)
The portsd XP/Linux are HUB'ed not SWITCHED, so i can see all packets
between XP and Linux.

I couldn't find precompiled binaries, or even a tar file, so I ran cvs to
get the source. I considered the possibility that I am calling the wrong
version of cupsaddsmb. I will double check that I have teh correct

Yes as a matter of fact , I did find a solution to it. It was a matter
of lateral thinking.

In your w2k client run regedit

Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Under passwordexpirywarning put the value of 0

Reboot and solution solved.

[Samba] trailing $

2002-10-14 Thread David Krovich

Here is the situation. I have NT 4.0 acting as a PDC on machine A. On
machine B, I have Sun PC Netlink running on a solaris machine. In the
PDC all home dirs are mapped to \\pcnetlinkserver\username$

I'm trying to replace PC Netlink with Samba on Machine B. The problem
is I can't figure out how to make samba do the right thing when
presented with username$. Mounting a username without the trailing $
works, but I would like Samba to share the user's homedir when it
receives a request for either \\pcnetlinkserver\username or
\\pcnetlinkserver\username$.

Any help would be appreciated. I tried searching, but it's tough for
me to figure out how to correctly phrase my question to a search
engine.

[Samba] "No such file" error when reading Win98 profiles

2002-10-14 Thread Ed Lally

Hi all,

I'm having an odd error with Samba 2.2.5 and I'm wondering if anyone can
give me a hand with it.

About a month ago, I upgraded from Samba 2.2.1 to 2.2.5 on RedHat 7.2 and,
since then, my Win98 users have been receiving "No such file or directory"
errors during login. The upgrade was installed using John Terpstra's RH 7.2
RPM package.

Users are set up with roaming profiles which, because they use Win98, are
stored in a directory ".ntprofile" off their home directories. The problem
is that, when their profiles are restored on login, they get an error that a
file -- usually a shortcut to "3-1/2 Floppy (A)" -- can't be found.  The
transcript from the Samba log appears below:

[2002/09/18 14:54:45, 10] smbd/mangle_hash.c:is_mangled(317)

It looks like a problem with the name mangling for files in MS Office's
"Recent" directory. What's interesting is that there are LOTS of files
stored in there, so it appears the directory is never getting rid of its old
files. Clearing the directory fixes the problem for a few days but it
reappears quickly. I haven't yet monitored the logs to see if Office ever
tries to clean out the files, though.

I've checked permissions for the users and everything looks fine. Users are
able to read and write everything else in their profiles without trouble --
it looks like it's just this one shortcut to their floppy drive that's
causing the problem.

Finally, here are some entries from my smb.conf that might be related:

[global]
preserve case = Yes
short preserve case = Yes
case sensitive = No
logon path = \\cerberus\profiles\%U
logon drive = H:
logon home = \\%N\%U\.ntprofile
create mask = 0664
directory mask = 0775
map system = Yes
map hidden = Yes
dos filemode = Yes
dos filetimes = Yes

Thanks,

[Samba] Problems with Windows XP clients

2002-10-14 Thread Luis Fernando C. Talora

Fellows,

Someone has probably asked about it before, but I've just joinned this list. I'm
having some trouble with
Windows XP clients. Here's what's happening: some clients join the Samba Domain
normally but, after the
required boot (always required - it's a Windows machine), the machine refuses to logon
to the domains accusing
that the PDC could not be found; another Windows XP client simply refuses to join the
domain and returns an
error message (I'm sorry I've forgotten to take note of the message). Windows 98
clients work just fine.

This network has a DHCP and a DNS (which also forwards DNS querys to DNS Servers on
the DMZ) servers
running on the same machine than Samba. The Samba service is also configured (at
least, I hope so) to act like a
Domain Controller (as told above) and WINS server.

Any suggestions, please?

Thank you so much.

By "can't find", do you mean the Samba server doesn't appear in
My Network Places (the browse list)? And if so, did you wait a good,
long time for the browse list to update?

Otherwise, I'd check the TCP/IP configuration on the XP systems
carefully, and test name service.

If the problem is a dialog that comes up during log on, then the
XP systems might need the RequiresSignOrSeal registry patch.

[Samba] assigning group permission on clients in a domain

2002-10-14 Thread Ivan Sergio Borgonovo

I need to assign permissions to groups on clients of a Samba PDC.

The only groups I can see on a W2K client are default W2K groups
(Domain Users, Domain Admins, SYSTEM, DIALUP, etc...).

I mapped the Unix group "users" to "Domain Users" in

username map

users = "Domain Users"

but of course this is a workaround.

This cause a lot of "funny" things.
When I see "Domain Users" in the list it is specified as "DOMAIN\Domain
Users". Once I add it I see it as "LOCALMACHINE\Domain Users", when I
confirm and check later it is listed as "DOMAIN\users".

If I need more Domain wide groups (defined on the Samba PDC) that are
visible to the clients what should I do?

I'm running 2.2.5

"domain group map" is not anymore supported.

TIA

[Samba] Authentication problems using swat.

I'm having issues when connecting to a localhost with swat. I'm using

setup correctly.
At least I think I do, because I'm able to connect and have it prompt me
for a
username and password. No matter how the swat file is configured, it refuses
access.

Is this something to do with using encrypted passwords with samba, under
linux,
or is it a Linux security issue?

[Samba] Possible bug found in Samba3.0 alpha-20 testing (Winbind related)

2002-10-14 Thread Lee, Mike

Hello everyone,

    I
think I have discovered a bug in the alpha20 release of samba 3.0.   Here is what I did/discovered:

--  Created a new user
account on a Windows NT 4.0 PDC

--  Created a user
account on a linux machine with the same username

--  ran "getent passwd" and compared
the uids for the domain and local users.

    I
found that the domain users always have a UID of +1 to the local user
account.  For example billybob user has a UID on the local machine of 10032 and
the domain user has a UID of 10033.  I have created numerous accounts and the
problem is always the same.

    I
checked the log.winbindd log and it is always
complaining about not being able to map the uid to
the domain sid.  It also reports the "Access Denied"
error when trying to access or set the ACL permissions via the user account
with the +1 UID.

    Can
anyone else verify this?  If this infact a bug, please let me know,
so that I am on the right track.
Thanks in advance.

Mike Lee

I fixed the problem. By simply switching the order of ip's on the

Hello All!

I have Samba Version 2.999+3.0.alpha20-2. Just recently I tried to join
the domain using the Win2k Wizard with no success. This functionality
worked in the previous version of Samba V. 2.2.3a. If I'm on the same
subnet though, it works like a charm. The error I receive is the
following:

"The following error occurred validating the name "mydomain"
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"

Here is the ip info for the SAMBA server:
Ip = 10.0.0.7
Mask = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 10.0.0.250

Here is the ip info of one of the machines on a different subnet:
Ip = 11.0.0.244
Mask = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 11.0.0.250
Wins = 10.0.0.7

The samba server is able to ping the client ip, and vice-versa.

I'll be happy to post my smb.conf file if anyone is interested.

Thanks!

2. http://www.dmsofttech.com/downloads.html this one looks very easy but
will only work 30 times before you have to buy it $35.00 US

[Samba] Help Requested - nmbd Stopping

2002-10-14 Thread Tom Lackey

I am running LINUX 6.0 with Samba-2.0.5a on a 433 DEC Alpha. The machine is
like a "Timex", it just keeps running. Once in a while I would have restart
nmbd since it would stop, though smbd continued to run.

Just recently nmbd stopped. I restarted as usual but nmbd stopped again
after about 15 seconds. I rebooted but nmbd stops in 15 to 20 seconds. I no
longer can run my Samba applications.

The Alpha server has not caused any problems in the past. I have not made
any changes to the system. I know I need to upgrade, but I hate to shut down
the server since there are a number of users depending on it being up
(24x7).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Tom

I think I remember getting this before, it went away as soon as I used
one of the shares on the machine. I think the problem was that it tried
to open the lock DB file, and when it didn't exist smbstatus just gave
an error instead of assuming that there weren't any locks. Using the
share created the file, and once it existed smbstatus never complained
again.

[Samba] swat problems under RedHat 7.3

I'm having problems validating when using swat on the localhost.
The server is RH Linux 7.3. I'm using encrypted passwords and I'm
able to connect to points using Windows products, etc; however,
when I http://localhost:901, I get the login dialog, but it won't
accept the root account or password. It tells me that the
"Authorization failed". I did configure the /etc/services and the
/etc/xinetd.d/swat file correctly, and HUP'ed the xinetd daemon.
Is it a security issue within Linux or is it possibly my swat
config under xinetd.d? Here is the swat file:

service swat

[Samba] WIN40 printer driver on Solaris not being installed?

2002-10-14 Thread John M Wright

I am having problems with the driver installation for WIN40 (9x machines) in
Samba 2.2.5 / Samba 2.2.6pre2 on a Solaris 8 machine. I build binary packages
for both debian and solaris environments. For debian 2.2.5, I use the 2.2.5
source with the printing patch provided by Jerry Carter. I use the
packaging/Debian/debian systems to build and package the source. For Solaris
I use the following command to build the source (2.2.5 and 2.2.6pre2):

./configure --prefix=/usr/local
--with-readline \
--with-privatedir=/etc/samba/private \
--with-configdir=/etc/samba \
--with-lockdir=/var/samba/locks \
--localstatedir=/var/samba \
--with-ssl=/usr/local/ssl \
--with-sslinc=/usr/local/ssl/include \
&& make

I use the following commands to install the printer drivers:

smbclient //localhost/print$  -c
'mkdir WIN40;put /usr/company/printdrv/DEFPRTR2.PPD WIN40/APrinter.PPD;
put /usr/company/printdrv/ADFONTS.MFM WIN40/ADFONTS.MFM;
put /usr/company/printdrv/ADOBEPS4.DRV WIN40/ADOBEPS4.DRV;
put /usr/company/printdrv/ADOBEPS4.HLP WIN40/ADOBEPS4.HLP;
put /usr/company/printdrv/DEFPRTR2.PPD WIN40/DEFPRTR2.PPD;
put /usr/company/printdrv/ICONLIB.DLL WIN40/ICONLIB.DLL;
put /usr/company/printdrv/PSMON.DLL WIN40/PSMON.DLL;'

rpcclient localhost -c 'adddriver "Windows 4.0"
"Printer:ADOBEPS4.DRV:APrinter.PPD:NULL:ADOBEPS4.HLP:PSMON.DLL:RAW:ADFONTS.MFM,DEFPRTR2.PPD,ICONLIB.DLL"'

rpcclient localhost -c 'setdriver Printer "APrinter"'

All return successfully with no error conditions (except for
"NT_STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_COLLISION making remote directory \WIN40" when not
calling for the first time).

The debian system works fine (w/ 2.2.5), but the Solaris build does not appear
to install the WIN40 driver correctly with either 2.2.5 or 2.2.6pre2. (W32X86
driver works fine with a Win2k client and similar commands as above using
2.2.6pre2).

The driver directory looks like this:
bash$ ls -lR /etc/samba/drivers/WIN40/
total 775
drwxr-xr-x   2 lpadmin   512 Oct 14 18:01 0

-rw-r--r--   1 lpadmin 13493 Oct 14 18:01 APrinter.PPD

(under debian, the ADFONTS.MFM, DEFPRTR2.PPD and ICONLIB.DLL files are moved
to the WIN40/0 directory).

When I attempt to install the driver from the WIN98 client, the client machine
directs me to the local driver wizard (prompts me to choose a driver) and the
following is shown in the log.smb file (log level 3):

[Samba] Diagnosis script?

2002-10-14 Thread John Anderson

Hi,

I was wondering has anyone taken the Diagnosis file (from the Docs) and
made a script out of it?

Any time I have problems with samba, I like to run thru that file to
pinpoint what the problem is, and it would be easier to just type
./diagnosis.sh and let it do it's thing and have it kick out a report.
(Obviously that would only be for the server side).

If this has already been done, please let me know where I can find a
copy of it.

Thanks.

[Samba] Samba Error Message

2002-10-14 Thread Richard Amadori

I'm setting up Samba
for the first time and so far, things are going well with the exception of this
one error message that I get.  When I type "smbstatus" I get the following
message:

Failed to open byte
range locking database
ERROR: Failed to
initialize locking database
Can't initialize
locking module - exiting

I'm not sure how
severe this error is yet.  I'm using the most current release of Samba,
compiled it, and upgraded per the instructions in the README file in the redhat
directory.  I'm using Linux v.7.1 with a kernel version of
2.4.2-2

Hope this is enough
information.  I'd certainly appreciate it if you could
assist.

[Samba] kixtart and group based logins

2002-10-14 Thread Barry Smoke

I know this has been beaten to death, and the solution has always been
pre-exec scripts,
but I would like to delve further into discssion on group based actions
in log in scripts.

We have been playing with kixtart here, and are very impressed with it's
flexibility. So, here is my primary question...
there is an api that kixtart has that interfaces with the server, so
that group based logins(and other advaced features) can be accomplished.
Has there been any investigations on including this api into the samba
code?

Also,
samba already supports mapping shares based on someone's group
membership, even if that is not their primary group.

Can this already existing function be used in anyway to allow kixtart to
authenticate based on this?

Re: [Samba] SAMBA with mounted ISO images

2002-10-14 Thread Jon Monroe

Hey all,

I discovered that if I terminate my login "token" (or whatever you call it
where the server has successfully authenticated your name/passwd and
records this) then the locked folder becomes free after about 60 seconds. I
tried this by doing a net login /d \\server\IPC$

I also noticed that after logging in, closing any open folders but NOT
releasing my login session, that there are *2* records in the
locks/connections.tdb file for my workstation. One of them has the IPC$ in
the key, while the other is presumably just for the folder. Perhaps I can
just delete this weird second entry manually to force release the folder
lock that I'm not using anyway without having to logout/login everytime? :)

I forgot last time:
x86 RH 8.0, samba 2.2.5 compiled from regular samba source.
win2k, sp3 w/s

Thanks again,
Jon

IMHO there is nothing wrong with it.
You can find quite a few expressions like this - "DNS service", for
example.
So it is common practice...

Please retest with 2.2.6rc3. This is a known bug and fixed in 2.2.6.

[Samba] Connecting to Samba Shares over VPN

2002-10-14 Thread Jack Aboutboul

Hey All,

  I recently set up a Cisco PIX 506e VPN at my office. When a user
connects through the VPN they are able to access all windows shares but
when a samba share is queried using the UNC you get a message that says
"So service appears to be operating at this location" or something to
that effect. The samba server does bind to an interface and only allows
certain hosts, but the vpn connection puts me on that subnet, so i
should be able to get in, although im not. Anyone have any ideas? Samba

Re: [Samba] Directory size display discrepency

2002-10-14 Thread Michael Heironimus

That actually looks pretty normal. Windows properties show two sizes
because it shows both the real size of a file (Size) and the amount of
space it's reserving on disk because of the cluster size (Size on Disk).
Your user will see the same thing looking at a small file or directory
in C:. I'm not sure how Windows handles the "size on disk" for a file
server, it probably either asks for it or guesses based on the total
size of the disk. In any case, it's normal to have different sizes
showing.

I'm assuming that the directory contents actually do total around 33
bytes. It's been a while since I used a DEC so I don't remember how its
"du" handles the size of small directories. If you use "ls -l" you'll
probably see that the directory shows 4096 as the size.

[Samba] good solution for "automount" homes

2002-10-14 Thread Schoep, Grant @ STORM

All,
On our main file server, all our home directorys are automount
points. So /home isn't a real filesystem area, it points to a bunch of
different home areas based on the auto.direct table. Example:

/home/user1  mounts from --> /export/home1/user1
/home/user2  mounts from --> /export/home2/user2
/home/user3  mounts from --> /export/home2/user3
/home/user4  mounts from --> /export/home3/user4

I could explain more but I am sure most everyone knows how automount works
in basic...

Ok, so I want to do a read share out for all the users home areas... I could
just set up a share one /home, but then since its an automount, /home/user1
wouldn't show up until user1 did something on the file server that keyed the
automounter to kick in.

Is there a way to have samba cause the automounter to kick in and mount it?
I was actually suprised it didn't in the first place, but maybe its due to
the way explorer browses, meaning it determintes that the path doesn't exist
and doesn't even try to do it.

[Samba] Samba Accross Lans

2002-10-14 Thread Irving Carrion

Ip = 10.0.0.7
Mask = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 10.0.0.250

Here is the ip info of one of the machines on a different subnet:
Ip = 11.0.0.244
Mask = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 11.0.0.250
Wins = 10.0.0.7

The samba server is able to ping the client ip, and vice-versa.

I'll be happy to post my smb.conf file if anyone is interested.

Thanks!
IRV

AFAIK it's never been anything to do with SAMBA.

It's called NAT still - NetBIOS Audit Tool.

You can get it here: http://www.darknet.org.uk/content/files/windows/nat.zip

[Samba] question

2002-10-14 Thread Gina Scott

I have samba installed on my HP Unix box. One problem I am having is
that on most windows xp and 2000 machines finding my samba server is not
a problem. On some xp machines tho, it can't find my samba server at
all. Does anyone have any ideas on where I can look on the machine to
figure out why it won't see my samba server?

[Samba] where did the NAT tool go? (smb network testing/scanning)

2002-10-14 Thread Louis-David Mitterrand

Hi,

In the samba debian package there used to be a very convenient utility
to scan networks for open samba shares and weak passwords. Its name
AFAIR is nat.

Where can one find this tool? Is it still maintained? Is there a better
alternative?

Thanks,

[Samba] mount_smbfs: can't get handle to requester (no /dev/nsmb* device)

2002-10-14 Thread Markku Kokko

Hi all !

I have a little problem here mounting or browsing samba shares.

I have a FreeBSD 4.6.2 running samba, and a share on that called public.

when I try to mount that share it asks for password, and then gives an
error:

ex.

libra# mount_smbfs //maxi@samba/public /mnt
Password:
mount_smbfs: can't get handle to requester (no /dev/nsmb* device)
libra#

I can list the shares with smbclient, no errors at all.

I can not login to the samba like this:

libra# smbutil login //maxi@samba
Password:
smbutil: can't get handle to requester (no /dev/nsmb* device)
smbutil: can't get handle to requester (no /dev/nsmb* device)
smbutil: could not login to server SAMBA: syserr = Invalid argument
libra#

I have checked /dev and there is one entry for nsmb0:

libra# ll /dev/nsmb*
crw---  1 root  wheel  144,   0 Oct 14 15:23 /dev/nsmb0
libra#

I don't think the problem is server related because it works on another
Windows workstation on the same LAN.

Any ideas on what this might be?
Need more info? Just ask, I'll give all info I can...

Regards: Markku / Maxi

[Samba] Printer settings on 2.2.5

2002-10-14 Thread Nicolas Kowalski

Hello.

We are using a Samba 2.2.5 as a PDC on a Debian GNU/Linux server. This
server also handles a few printers, through LPRng. On the Unix side,
no problem (duplex, simplex, short-duplex), everything works fine.

I followed the instructions from the howto collection "Printing
Support in Samba 2.2.x" to make these printers available on
Samba. Most of the described procedure worked well. Win2k/NT
workstations have now the ability to download the required drivers.

However, users (then me) noticed that no duplex printing is
possible. When Going to Control-Panel->Printers, we can select the
Printer properties, then the disposition and finally tell this printer
must use duplex printing without problem (as a superuser or as a
normal user).

The strange thing is that when we try to setup such a behaviour
(duplex printing) from within an application (any application), the
disposition tab does not contain the duplex setting anymore. And of
course, users are unable to print duplex documents.

I really do not understand what's wrong here.

Here is excerpt from /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf, with all
printer-related informations :

[global]

[...]

load printers = No
disable spoolss = no

[...]

printing = lprng

[print$]
path = /usr/local/samba/printers
guest ok = yes
browseable = yes
read only = yes
write list = root

[hp1]
comment = HP LaserJet 4050TN
path = /var/spool/samba

printer name = hp1
guest ok = yes

[hp2]
comment = HP LaserJet 4100DTN
path = /var/spool/samba
printable = Yes
printer name = hp
guest ok = yes

Here is also a sample from a log file. This error happens when opening
a printer from a Win2K client. I do not know what to do with this.

[2002/10/14 16:40:20, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket_data(499)

Any suggestions ???

Thanks in advance.

2002-10-14 Thread Dr. Bernd Zimmermann

Are you using Win XP ?

We have a similar problem, except that it was working a few weeks
and than suddenly the XP computer cannot see the samba server
anymore !!

All other computers (Win98, WinNT) works still fine - only XP is the
problem and we habe no clue whats going on.

All the hints: XP registry, Firewall, Security does not solve our problem.
We are still stucked - XP is not seeing Samba ;-(

[Samba] samba server does not appear in network neighborhood

2002-10-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all,

I've recently setup samba 2.2.5 on a solaris 8 workstation and configured it
to be a member of an NT domain. Everything is working correctly, with the
exception that the samba server does not appear in the network neighborhood of
the rest of the PC's in the domain. However, if you choose to "search for
computers" and enter the netbios name of the server it is detected and all of
the shares show up correctly. I've set the "wins server" option in my smb.conf
file to the ip address of the local wins server, and my NT administrator
claims to have created an entry for the machine (anyone know how I can verify
this?), so I'm pretty much at a loss at this point. Here are the options I've
set:

smb.conf
[global]
workgroup = mydomain
netbios name = my_netbios_name # same as dns hostname (but not fqdn)
security = domain
local master = no
domain master = false
preferred master = false
wins server = xx.xx.xx.xx
dns proxy = no

I've also added the following lines to /etc/services:

netbios-ns  137/udp  nbns
netbios-ns  137/tcp  nbns
netbios-dgm 138/udp  nbdgm
netbios-dgm 138/tcp  nbdgm
netbios-ssn 139/udp  nbssn
netbios-ssn 139/tcp  nbssn

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-brian

Re: [Samba] Can't manipulate files on Samba server after installing W2K SP3

2002-10-14 Thread Eric Clark

I made some progress on the problems I am
having.  If we make people root as their primary group, they have no
problems with file manipulation(IE - editing a file and saving it on the samba
share).  And once the files are manipulated by someone with root access,
anyone can manipulate that file.  I checked the permissions and the
shares all have either group(which, btw, everyone has as their secondary
group) level access or have no group restrictions(the temp folder).
We changed all the users to have the group associated with the shares as their
primary group and that had mixed success.  Sometimes it would work,
sometimes not.  We upgraded to samba 2.2.6 to see if that fixed any of the
problems, but no dice.  Keeping everyone as root is not an acceptable
option.

Anyone have any ideas now?

[Samba] Password expiration

2002-10-14 Thread Darin Bawden

Good morning everyone,
Just a quick question. I have a Samba server set up as a PDC with
2.2.3a-6. Things seem to be going OK. However, something that has finally
started to show up is password expiration. I know users can change Windows
passwords and that should, in theory, change the passwords on the Linux
server. What I'm wondering is is if there's a way to tell samba/linux to
send a warning box X number of days ahead of expiration. I thought I had
that set up, but it doesn't seem to be working.
 Here's an output of Testparm of my current box. Thanks for all
the help  :)

The problems seemed to start happening since I recompiled the kernel to
merge in the latest errata re: the OpenBSD kernel. So what I did was
download and recompile (with my current kit) the latest samba package
(2.2.5) but still seem to be getting these problems. I have rebooted the
machine twice since, but to no avail. These connections happen over an
IPSEC connection over my DSL modem. It's been working before, but not
now?

Any ideas people?

Kinds regards,

Is this a typo or is your [profiles] share really read-only?

[Samba] directories creation troubles

2002-10-14 Thread Valter Dal Bo

Wellseeing that no one has answered my question, I'm posting it
again (maybe the message just passed unnoticed ;-) ).

I've just finished setting up a samba 2.2.6pre2 installation on a SGI
running IRIX 6.5.16.
I've discovered that logging on a win2000 client, if I create a new file
on a test share everything works but when I try to create a new
directory I get the following error on win:

Impossible to create the folder "New Folder"
Impossible to find the specified file.

Increasing the log level and doing the same operation I get the
following error

[2002/10/08 14:40:18, 5] smbd/filename.c:(119)

Any ideas ?

P.S.
I've installed 2.2.6pre2 because I thought it would have solved the
problem which appeared already in the 2.2.5 version I had previously
installed.

[Samba] "gui interfaces"

2002-10-14 Thread Frederik Fabritius

hello :-)

first i should say im a very happy user of your product and youre doing a
great job :)

just looked at your web page and saw a link which said "gui interfaces" ..
but since gui stands for graphical user interface .. the link actually says
'graphical user interface interfaces' .. shouldnt this be changed to "gui's"
or "graphical user interfaces"? :-)

[Samba] collating multiple copies does not work

2002-10-14 Thread Martin Zielinski

Hello list,

I'm using Samba 2.2.6pre and cups 1.1.15.
Client is W2k SP2, driver is Laserjet 4 from
w2k disk (same behaviour reported w. FS1800 kyo driver).

Test:
Trying to print multiple copies of a document w. more than one pages
from word.
Collate button is checked.

Result:
The output is *not* collated (I get e.g. twice page one, twice page two...).

Doing the reference test w. w2k as spooler, everythings works as expected...
...as long as the "advanced printing features" are enabled in the printer
properties dialog!
AFAIK this enables some print job processing on the server, the client does
only preprocessing.

Does this mean, that Samba has no chance to collate the pages?
Or is this just a TODO for Samba?

Any hints, fixes, tricks or workarounds are appreciated.

Thanks, Martin

More to the point, it has known flaws in 2.2 - my understanding was that it
wasn't meant to actually be used in 2.2, but was put in to keep things
in sync with HEAD...

[Samba] Directory size display discrepency

2002-10-14 Thread Stephen Kitchener

Hi,

I would liek to ask the list if any one can explain why there should be
a discrepency in the directory sizes that are displayed when I use
explorer on Windows. This has been reported to me by a user, I have
never seen this before as I dont use windows if I can help it :-)...

When I slect properties of a directory it has two enties
Size and Size on disk
As an example size says 33 bytes, size on disk says 512kb and if I du a
du -ks on the directory it reports 4 k.

Has anyone noticed this before ?, do I need to set up samba a different
way?

I should say that the machine that samba is on is a DEC/Compaq machine
running 2.0.10 but is also seen on a 2.2.3a samba installed machine.

Thanks

Sorry, why is this important exactly?

And is the problem?

What do the logs say?

What version/OS are you using..etc etc..

[Samba] Distinguish Samba from Win* programmatically

2002-10-14 Thread Klaus-Georg Adams

Hi,
is there a way to distinguish a Samba server from a genuine Windows
server programmatically from a Windows client?

I am writing an installer and need to perform different actions
depending if the machine on which a share resides is a Windows machine
or a Unix host.

Any hint is appreciated.
