[Samba] Trouble with domain logins

2002-10-18 Thread John Berry

Sorry but I am a newbie! I can’t get
this straight in my head! What do I need to do other than smb.conf file to
setup WindowsXP users for domain login? The problem is that root is the only
one that can login to the domain, and I get the profiles login folder error. I
have already patched the XP registry. I am using Webmin 1.0xx on RH 8.0 with a
full custom install…

Thank You,

[Samba] DNS error connecting to Domain

2002-10-18 Thread Aton
Hello,

I have a Windows 2000 Pro SP3 Laptop, and a RH 7.3 server running Samba 2.2.5.

One day it refused to connect to the domain, said it wasn't available, couldn't access
\\server01\user\profile directory, and refused to browse the samba server. Reboots
didn't work. I unjoined the domain, and it complained that it could not remove the
machine account from the server. After I rebooted it, I tried to join the domain
again, and got a message (sorry, but this was a few hours ago) something like this:

DNS lookup error. Unable to lookup the Domain controller in the Active Directory.
Cannot contact domain.

I'm stuck. All the other machines on the network continue to run correctly. To me it
appears that for some reason the laptop thinks the samba server is a 2000 AD domain,
which won't work correctly without DNS. Anyone ever seen this before, or know why all
of a sudden this laptop refused to browse or re-join the domain?

Thanks for any help,
Aton

[Samba] Add User question

2002-10-18 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi all,

RH8.0

When I tried to add user "as root"

# smbpasswd -a AAA
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
unable to open passdb database.
Added user AAA

AAA is an existing user of RH8.0 with password to login. What is the
problem of "unable to open passdb database"

# which passdb
/usr/bin/which: no passdb in
(/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/root/bin)

# locate passdb
[root@localhost root]#

How to correct it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Today I got my first XP in my network. I installed applied the registry
patch and it logged perfectly in the Samba PDC. After that I started the
Windows Update. I couldn´t install the SP1 but I installed all the hotfix
left and them, after a reboot, the XP took almost 30 minutes to log into the
Samba PDC.

my 0.2 cents.

Bruno.

Hi all,

I'm trying to get a samba server which is all by itself, No Windows DCs, or
even windows shares at all, to play nice with Linux clients.

The server is authenticating Win9x, NT and 2000 clients fine and dandy, and
now I have need to add linux clients to the scenario, and have dicovered an
issue I can't seem to work through. Perhaps someone can help?

On the linux client, I can login as a user that exists only on the samba
server (TEST+testuser) , except I get the following message:

id: cannot find name for group id 1

When I do "wbinfo -t" I get back:
   Secret is good.

When I do "wbinfo -u" I get back:
   TEST+testuser

When I do "wbinfo -g" I get back:
   TEST+Domain Admins
   TEST+Domain Users

When I do "getent passwd" I get:

   root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
   bin:x:1:1:bin:/bin:/sbin/nologin
   .
   .
  cut for brevity
   .
   .
   bub:x:500:500:Bub Slug:/home/bub:/bin/bash
   TEST+testuser:x:1:1::/home/testuser:/bin/bash

So far so good, until I do "getent group", which returns:

   root:x:0:root
   bin:x:1:bin
   .
   .
  cut for brevity again
   .
   .

   bub:x:500:bub

So my net groups "Domain Admins" and "Domain Users" don't show up when I
getent group, and there is no other network group that winbind can map to
gid 1 when TEST+testuser logs in to the Linux client, and I suspect this
is why I get the ID message on login (?)

Once again, I am not using any Windows 9x, NT, 2000 servers, the Linux Samba
server is the only PDC (and the only DC).

Can anyone offer some help aside from the stuff that's around on the net.
It all seems to deal with using Samba in a Domain with an actual windows DC,
not as a standalone server being a DC.

I wonder why my client linux box can't see the domain groups on login, and
while I'm on the subject, where do "Domain Admins" and "Domain Users" come
from in the first place, and how do I add, delete or modify domain groups or
how do I make groups on the Linux Samba server display to linux clients?

Both server and Client use RedHat 7.3 (Stock Kernel) Samba wasn't installed
with the redhat setup, instead I downloaded the tarball for 2.2.5

I compiled the server software in the source directory with:

   ./configure
   make
   make install

The server is set up as a PDC with an smb.conf file that looks like:

   [global]
   workgroup = TEST
   netbios name = LINUXSRV
   interfaces = 127.0.0.1 192.168.240.20
   encrypt passwords = Yes
   domain logons = Yes
   os level = 64
   preferred master = True
   domain master = True
   wins support = Yes

   [homes]
   path = /home/%U
   read only = No
   browseable = No

   [netlogon]
   path = /usr/local/samba/netlogon
   browseable = No

I've configured the linux client and added it to the domain by:

Setting it's host name to linuxclient,

Compiling the samba software from source (2.2.5) in the source directory
with:
   ./configure --with-winbind
   make
   make install
   make nsswitch

   Copied libnss_winbind.so to /lib
   Created a link:
   ln -s /lib/libnss_winbind.so /lib/libnss_winbind.so.2
   copied pam_winbind.so to /lib/security

Created an smb.conf file for winbind that looks like
   [global]
   workgroup = TEST
   winbind separator = +
   winbind uid = 1-2
   winbind gid = 1-2
   winbind enum users = yes
   winbind enum groups = yes
   template homedir = /home/%U
   template shell = /bin/bash
winbind use default domain = yes
   wins server = 192.168.240.20

Created a init script to fire up winbind

edited /etc/nsswitch.conf to change the lines:
   passwd: files winbind
   shadow: files
   group: files windbind

added these lines to /etc/pam.d/login:
   auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_winbind.so
   account sufficient /lib/security/pam_winbind.so
   session required /lib/security/pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel
umask=022

did a: /sbin/ldconfig -v | grep winbind which returned:
   libnss_winbind.so -> libnss_winbind.so

I started up the winbindd daemon on the client.

Then on the server, I did:
   useradd linuxclient$
   passwd -l linuxclient$
   smbpasswd -a -m linuxclient

   useradd testuser
   passwd -l testuser
   smbpasswd -a testuser

On the linux client I did:
   smbpasswd -j TEST -r 192.1

That sounds about right. There are only a few people with the time to
play 'wack a mole' with the contuing stream of questions.

I think one of the problems is that we don't have a decent FAQ system -
so there are a *lot* of duplicate questions on the list. (That said,
I'm not sure how many people would read an FAQ in any case...)

[Samba] winbind wbinfo -t secret is bad

2002-10-18 Thread Galecki, Jason
Quick run down of my setup:

NT 4.0 PDC, Samba RedHat 8.0 with samba 2.2.5-10 on it.(Also used RedHat 7.2
with 2.2.6 final as well) with the exact same results.

When I run wbinfo -t, I get Secret is bad 0xc18b. I have been trying to
figure this out for a few days now and can't get it working correctly. If I
run wbinfo -u, all of the users appears in the list, as well when I run
wbinfo -g, I get all of the groups. When I run getent passwd and getent
group, everything works their also.

I added and removed the linux server on a few different occasions. I can
browse the Samba server and see the shares. The secure share is a no go,
get prompted for password, with nothing working. The open share can be seen
by everyone. When I added the samba server to the domain using this command:
smbpasswd -j xxx -r xxxPDC -U xxx,
it came back successfully. The workstation is a NT 4.0 box and we also are
testing with a win98 box as well.
Any thought would be appreciated.

Re: [Samba] Please help, going mad with permissions

2002-10-18 Thread Troy.A Johnson
It maybe isn't the problem now, but it may be that your OS has a cron job, utility, or
patch that modifies the permissions of files/directories under "/dev". This is
because it may assume that all files/directories there are devices. For that reason
alone, I would definitely find another location for this share.

Just my 2 cents, and good luck!

Re: [Samba] information about XP <-> samba ?

2002-10-18 Thread Bruno Gimenes Pereti
Hi,

Today I got my first XP in my network. I installed applied the registry
patch and it logged perfectly in the Samba PDC. After that I started the
Windows Update. I couldn´t install the SP1 but I installed all the hotfix
left and them, after a reboot, the XP took almost 30 minutes to log into the
Samba PDC.

my 0.2 cents.

Bruno.

[Samba] non-English filenames (one more attempt)

2002-10-18 Thread bulia byak
Speaking of the low answer-to-question ratio, here's a question I posted a week ago
but did not get a single answer. Please help me! Before posting, I've searched lots of
docs (unsuccessfully), and the problem is critical for me.

I have a Win98 machine with Russian file names. As suggested in many
places, I put the following into smb.conf:

  client code page = 866
  character set = KOI8-R
  preserve case = yes
  short preserve case = yes
  default case = upper
  case sensitive = yes

Still, the filenames as viewed from Linux are unreadable (and files
are unaccessible). For example, the Russian name of the "My
documents" folder becomes "Н╚©
Я╚╛:03c0~:0393:03b4", a mix of wrong
characters and some hex codes preceded by ":".

The system is Mandrake 8.2. Everywhere else Cyrillic letters show up
fine, including a local fat32 partition, so this is not a problem
with Cyrillic support. I have tried samba 2.2.3a and then 2.2.5, but
the problem persists.

Just in case, here's the line from fstab:

//winbox/C /mnt/c smbfs uid=bulia,password=,user,defaults,fmask=0666
0 0

I tried to add iocharset=koi8-r to this fstab line (as I do for local fat32
partitions) but it didn't help.

[Samba] Two nmbd processes on 2.2.6

2002-10-18 Thread Noel Kelly
Hello,

I have downloaded and compiled 2.2.6 to replace my 2.2.6pre.

I spent a large part of the day debugging the startup script because it
seemed to always be starting two nmbd processes instead of one.

Eventually I tried running just /usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd - and still got
two nmbd processes. Is this correct behaviour?

On the first server (Dell 4600) I thought it might be because it has one of
the new hyperthreading BIOS which makes Linux believe it has dual
processors. The machine also had two NICs - one for each card?

However, I tried in on my old PII 233 single processor and single NIC and
sure enough two nmbds get started.

Have I missed something? Are there supposed to be two running these days?
I simply compiled with the usual parameters (./configure --with-smbmount
--with-utmp --with-msdfs --with-automount) and have made sure only one nmbd
exists on the system.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers
Noel

This computer was disjoined from the domain "MY_DOM", but the

In the smb.conf file [globals] section add:
wins support = Yes

Then configure all you PC's TCP/IP stack so that the IP address of the
WINS server is the IP address of the network interface of your samba
server. That simple.

Of course, the simplest way do configure all the windows clients is to use
DHCP. See the documentation on that in the samba documentation tree.

RE: [Samba] Resolving NetBIOS names within linux

2002-10-18 Thread darren
Hi,

I would like to do the same (resolve win_pc names in linux) too.
However, all my Win2k machines are simple just PCs in the same workgroup
(LAN).

What do I fill in as the WINS server?

If you are using the samba-team RPM package for your linux system, then
we
know you have libnss_wins.so in /lib.

So long as this library exists on your system:

1. Configure /etc/samba/smb.conf globals section
If your samba server is the WINS server you will have:
wins support = Yes
If your samba server is a WINS client then you will have:
wins server = x.x.x.x, where x.x.x.x is the WINS server
IP address.

2. Edit your /etc/nsswitch.conf file so it has:
hosts: files dns wins

3. Try it:
ping windows_machine_name

I personal use dnsmasq with dhcp, search freshmeat.net. It's almost a
dynamic dns solution, but with alot less head archs ( it took me a long
time to get dhcp+bind to do ddns )

The only thing that is a little differant, is you will have to use the
full hostname or client with a period on the end ...

	ping client.domain
or
	ping client.

Very quick, very light, very nice.

RE: [Samba] something wrong with the list (or its members)

2002-10-18 Thread l. a. walsh
It is something setup in 'majordomo' -- if a list owner wants replies
to go to the list, by default, they can specify the reply-to address
under list configuration.

Standard practice is to not set the reply-to field on announce type
lists
and to set the reply-to field to point to the list on discussion list.
The
idea being that on a discussion list, you don't usually want replies to
devolve into a bunch of individual conversations when a reply is also
likely
to benefit other people on the discussion list.

Seems this list should be set to reply to list, by default -- since if I
have a problem, I might first be likely to look through the archives,
but
if replies to problems were sent off-list, they won't be available -- so
you lose the collective solutions provided by list members (who then
have
to provide the same answers over and over again).

[Samba] Mapping drives from W2K domain controller

2002-10-18 Thread Stephen W. Boyd
I am having a strange problem. I can't map drives from my linux server to
my W2K domain controller. It keeps asking me for a user id & password and
no matter which user id & password I use I get a message telling me that
the user id and/or password is invalid. I can map drives from the linux
server to another W2K server that is in the same domain, but is not
configured as a domain controller.

I am using samba 2.2.5 on the linux server. W2K SP1 on both W2K
servers. The samba server is configured to using the W2K domain controller
to validate user ids & passwords. BTW I can map drives to the domain
controller from a SCO UNIX machine which is running samba 2.2.2.

Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried releasing the system from the domain (change it to a
workgroup) and then rejoining it to the domain? I had that with one of

Hi,

my problem is, that it was also working, but now its over.
The person who works with the XP computer changed something,
he cant remember - perhaps by accident.
An from now on the XP computer does not recognise the Samba anymore.
The samba also does not show up in the network neighborhood.
All registry hacks are set, no firewall, all ports,ip,protocols are
open,
but no chance of seeing a samba server.

So do you have any hints whats going on with XP when it refuses to workd

with Samba ?

I had a similar effect once playing with XP and Samba at home.
At first everything was OK, but then I klicked in the network assistent
on the
button "Home network installation" an from that point, no way of getting
in
touch with samba. I found no way getting back. That was the point I
decided
to kill XP.

I am using unixsam. This is what I have in my smb.conf.

So If I understand Andrew's response correctly, then I won't need a

We got it working using Samba 3.0 alpha 21 cvs. Configured as a PDC
using LDAP as the passdb. Encountered the same problem of being able to
join the domain and yet not being able to log in. Line in smb.conf looks

like this :

passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://ldap.internal.avlsi.com, unixsam

Solution came from Andrew Bartlette who gave the following response:

You either need to keep the 'unixsam' in your 'passdb backends' line in
your smb.conf, or add a 'guest' account to ldap, with a real unix UID
(possibly the same as nobody, should be the same as 'guest account') and
with RID 501.

2002-10-18 Thread Adam Lang
You all are overlooking his point.

The point he was raising is that he believes a lot of people are NOT hitting
reply all and just doing a reply back to the message sender, so a lot of
answers are not going to the list.

He is not saying he can't reply to the list. he is saying since the default
of just "reply" is to the message sender and not the list, a lot of messages
are not making it back.

[Samba] protocol question

2002-10-18 Thread l. a. walsh
I'm trying to understand odd behavior in my LAN. I'm running Samba
2.2.5 and trying to run it as a PDC.

I have 1-2 win98 clients, 1 XPSP1 client, and 1 Win2kSP3 client.

I've managed to add the XP and 2K machines to the domain successfully,
but
still haven't finished configuring logins to work correctly -- something
about my user not having permission to write to \\server\uname\profile
even though permissions on the various login paths and and netlogin
shares would seem to be in order -- but I can play more with these.

My main question concerns ethereal trace output:

Quite often when My w2k client is doing a lookup on my local group, I
see:

w2k -> server NBNS "Refresh MYGROUP <1d>"
server -> w2k ICMP "Destination Unreachable"
or more often:
w2k -> server NBNS "Name query NB MYGROUP <1c>"
server -> w2k ICMP "Destination Unreachable"
(repeated several times per cycle)

So why is the supposed (?) PDC, "server", sending back ICMP packets --
I thought ICMP dest unreachable's were for IP routing? Why am I seeing
them in response to a NBNS refresh and name queries?

Is this too technical for this group? It's sorta a 'newbie' question,
since
I'm just starting to understand this stuff, but am not sure where the
tech/regular list dividing line is

Thanks,
-linda

No. I briefly looked at an 2.4.18something Red Hat kernel, and it seems the
patch is not there, so I assume the author made it at the 2.4.4 time but it
didn't get included in the official kernel.

Look into the patch and see if it's in your kernel to be sure.

[Samba] Samba 3.020 and Win2K as PDC

2002-10-18 Thread Igor Korzinek
Hi,
I have a Win2K with Kerberos turned on, acting as PDC on one side (ZEUS).
And a RedHat 7.2 box on another.

I've manage to set Kerberos correctly (found with kdbg that I need to
specify -U in net ads join).

I've tryed everything, with no success.

After that, I have passed some of the tests from the HOWTO book, namely I
did not passed the Test 4. It seems that nmbd is not working, while smbd
seems to be fine.

Is there any doc or how-to that explains how to push nmdb to work ?

Any hints plas ?
Any help pleeeaseee ?

I'm attaching tar.gz with logs and configuration files.

Thank you for any response.

Re: [Samba] WIN40 printer driver on Solaris not being installed?

2002-10-18 Thread John M Wright
hello samba gurus:

Well, I didn't hear back from anyone, and I haven't had any luck in my own
trials. Since my original message, I have built 2.2.6 (final release) and
have had the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, pointers
that would help me track down this error and resolve it?

To recap, the basic problem is this:
I built samba 2.2.6 for Solaris and installed it with a printer share. I then
used the rpcclient to install the printer drivers. Not all of the driver
files get installed into WIN40/0 (they stay in WIN40) and when I attempt to
install the drivers from Win98 machine, samba's log begins to list the first
few files in the driver then says there are 0 files for this driver.

However, this all works fine when I build the package for debian.

any assistance would be appreciated
thanks
~John

Found this in the Network Admin Guide -
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linag2/book/ch05.html#X-087-2-IFACE.IFCONFIG

"Receiver overruns usually occur when packets come in faster than the kernel
can service the last interrupt."

I think you definitely have a problem with your NIC on the Samba machine. I
would swap it out and/or change the cable and see if that cures things. By
the sound of that explanation above it could also be something like a PCI
driver problem or a negotiation mismatch?

Well, it's the first thing I've thought, but this means I have *three*
bad switch port.
I have this in the customer card (eth0):
RX packets:3969314 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:6980 frame:0

No errors, but some overruns. Try to get some information about this,
but nothing related to samba.

I'll do a new post with "home status" and this overruns problem. I've
forgotten this fact when I write my post

Many thanks for your reply :)

When I hit "reply" it goes to Yura. There should be a reply-to-list
but I'm not sure how to set that up in mailing lists.

So probably (my theory), people need to know their MUA and a
list-reply ("L" in mutt).

Well, hitting reply-to-all in any MUA will do the trick, but this is not
something regular users usually care about.

I had over 25 clients connecting to an access db simultaneously. The
speed was decent, but thats going to depend on you samba server. Also
beware that many a time, when a certain client crashes it will usually
cause data corruption/loss or a messed up db. Be very careful.

[Samba] Re: Samba 3.0 alpha20-2 and Win2k SP3

2002-10-18 Thread Dennis Lattka

I've looked through the docs but see nothing about using SP3 and Samba.
Also, the log level 3 looks cryptic to me.

if the signorseal stuff is really set everywhere in the registry
then you should post a relevant excerpt of that log here.

Make sure the the log is from only one machine so it's easier to follow
(use log.smbd.%m)

There used to be a setting called spnego that i had to set to 'no'
but this was fixed a while ago. might be worth a try.

Thanks for the reply Brad. I just looked at the registry and it is

"requiresignorseal"=dword:

I would be glad to submit a log but no developer has asked for it, so

I'm currently using the "use spnego = no" option in my smb.conf file.

Shall I submit this to the technical samba list?

Anyway, thanks for your help!

Subject: [Samba] NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED - Samba on Mandrake 8.2

I am attempting to integrate a Linux Samba Server with an NT 4.0 PDC.
Ideally I am looking to authenticate the users on the PDC, and then
permit access to the Samba Shares on the Linux Box.

You probably want to setup winbind. Winbind is available in Mandrake
8.2, you may need to install it:

# urpmi samba-winbind

You will need to uncomment the winbind sections of the default smb.conf
file, set it to 'security=domain', set the workgroup, and join the domain:

# smbpasswd -j -U

For more information (note that most steps should have been done for you
in the 8.2 RPMS) see:

http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/muo/connect/csamba5.html#winbind

Note that Mandrake 9.0 allows you to join it to the domain (with full
winbind setup) during installation (probably only in expert
installation, choose "windows domain" as authentication method where you
enter your root password).

The latest samba RPMS for 8.2 (2.2.6 is available at
http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/samba) have a better example
smb.conf example configuration for winbind, /etc/samba/smb-winbind.conf.
All that you should need to do to it is change your workgroup name).

I have several
issues, but the one which is presenting itself currently is when I
attempt to Browse the PDC using smbclient. I get the following:

 smbclient -L dumbo

You haven't specified a username, by default smbclient uses the username
you are currently logged in as. Do you have a domain account with the
same username?

added interface ip=192.168.0.11 bcast=192.168.15.255 nmask=255.255.240.0

session request to DUMBO failed (Called name not present)

Are you sure you're using the right netbios name for the machine (only
applies to error above).

Anonymous login successful

You haven't authenticated successfully.

Dumbo is the DNS Name of the PDC.

Netbios and DNS names should preferably match (either using DNS
aliases/CNAMEs etc)

Why Do I get the
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED message?

Because your machine does not have the guest account enabled, and you
haven't connected with a valid username/password.

I get this same message when I attempt
to use the Samba Share as an NT PDC User (using the Username and
password as well).

That would probably be because you either haven't joined the domain, or
don't have existing usernames on the samba server.

Here are two sessions to our windows server (member of our samba
domain), one without a valid username/password, one with a valid
username/password:

Re: [Samba] MS Access and Samba

2002-10-18 Thread Oliver Krehan
When the database is located on a Windows NT4-Server, the changes can be
seen immediatly on the other 3 pcs. There is also a window popping up which
announcing a sql-error but this seems to have no negative effect on the
database. At a test-run under Win2k-Server the same error appears but also
the changes can be seen immediatly.

So in general words spoken, is the database saved on a windows machine it
works as it should, is it saved on samba share no changes can be seen until
the pc the changes are made on closes the database.

Like the other poster said: It seems to depend on the application. The
Access engine (JET?) is used by at least one app I know and it works
fine with Samba. Can you reproduce the problem when sharing the database
from NT4/W2k/XP computer?

[Samba] something wrong with the list (or its members)

2002-10-18 Thread Yura Pismerov

I've noticed the list has pretty low answer:question ratio.
I tend to think that many replies go directly to people who post the
questions and those people never bother to share the answers with the
community. I don't think this is fair so we may want to do something in
this regard. We either need certain rules that will imply posting of
summaries (as {SUN,LINUX}managers lists do), or the list maintainers
should consider setting up reply-to-list option.
I'd like to know what people think about it...

In order to allow smb packets to be accepted you're going to need to

these 2 lines above the line listed above.
-A input -p tcp -s 0/0 -d 0/0 137:139 -y -j ACCEPT
-A input -p udp -s 0/0 -d 0/0 137:139 -y -j ACCEPT

I can't remember if you need the udp or not.

This is also opens you up to anybody. You'll probably want to insert
the acutal ip addresses of your two other machines in there. This could
be a problem though.

One way to tell if you're got the smb ports locked down is to go to
http://www.grc.com from your linux machine.
Click Shields Up. It should tell you whether or not it can see your
windows share. After you add the lines to open up the ports, go back to
the site and try again. It should tell you the basic stuff like
workgroup name.

You really should invest in some type of firewalling hardware/software,
preferrably something that filter packets before they get to your machines.

Whay are you mounting a FAT32 filesystem?

If you want your clients to see the filespace as having FAT symantics then
all you need to do on your shared resource (ie: in the share definition in
smb.conf) is say "fstype = FAT". It is far preferable to use native Linux
file system types that have a higher level of integrity than to use native
FAT32. Have you tried this option?

Another way on Sun is to use smbsh. This is part of Samba, but you do need
to set the appropriate options to configure to generate the binaries
needed. Smbsh does not "map" an SMB resource into your file system but
works more like automounter does. When you run smbsh you c an cd to /smb
where an 'ls' will list the domains and workgroups, cd to a workgroup and
you see the machines in that workgroup, cd to the machine name and you see
the shared resources, etc...

If you were using Linux you could use smbfs.

[Samba] Slow transfer file between Windows and Samba PDC (2.2.3a)

2002-10-18 Thread Guillaume Estival
Hello everyone

I have a quite weird problem, and I've try a lot of possibility without
any success. It's about file transfert beetween a Windows 2000/98/ME and
a Samba PDC. I've made some tests with a Win 2K PDC too.
Oh yes, English isn't my native language, so please excuse me in advance
for my *bad* english.
I'll try to be the most complete I can, so this post may be a little
long.

Customer environment:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) III CPU family 1133MHz (Dell) with a Red hat
7.3 OS (Samba 2.2.3a), with 256Mo of RAM,
scsi0 : Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.5

aic7899: Ultra160 Wide Channel A, SCSI Id=7, 32/253 SCBs
less than 10 Windows 2000/ME/98 connected

The first problem was the crash of Excel when someone try to open a XLS
file located on the PDC. According to the log file, it's a oplock
problem (I saw posts about it and 2.2.6pre1 version, seems fixed in the
pre2, right?). I've just disabled those system. Works fine.

The Second problem is the slow transfer file between Windows (don't seem
related to the version) and the PDC. The lucky transfer rate is
8Mbits/s, which is quite slow on a full 100Mbits/s LAN. Is "mii-tool"
give true information? I've got this:
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok

Sound good, huh?
Since people there are basic end user, I can't do any other test (FTP
one, NFS one, and so on). But the funny thing is that a copy
windows<->windows is far faster (more than 2 times faster). Same Switch.

Well, STFW, see FAQ, got some infos about MTU and SO_SNDBUF stuff. I've
change the SO_SNDBUF option, and use 16384 for value. A little better,
but still slow. I haven't found a clear information about the MTU
configuration and changes we must do for Samba. More, I read that
changing MTU under Windows 98 is quite risky, and since they are basic
end users, I don't want to risk anything (unless it's the only *working*
solution to go faster). If someone have some pointers about MTU stuff
(samba, linux kernel, windows), It may be usefull for me, feel free to
post them ;).

Well, at this point, I'm puzzled, and I can't make interesting test.
(I'm not on the customer location)
Then, since I've set up a Samba PDC at home, I've done some test here.

Home:
Laptop Celeron 366, 192Mo acts as Samba PDC
(Debian Woody 3.0), through a Xircom Ether 100/56K modem
Desktop celeron 800, 320Mo, RTL8139, Windows 98
Hub 100Mbits/s

Got *exactly* the same thing: According to iptraf, I'm stuck at 8Mbits/s
for transfer files. If I change SO_SNDBUF and use 16384, the transfer
file slow down at 3Mbits/s. uh oh. sound bad.

I'll do some other test this week end in my home configuration (FTP, NFS
transfer files) to see if this is not related to a connection problem.
(I'm not sure, but I think the NFS transfer is more likely 4MBytes/s
than 1Mbytes at home)

Here, *really* puzzled. Why samba is so slow? A weird idea comes in my
mind: What about Windows 2000, as a PDC, performances?

At work:
Duron 700, 256Mo RAM 100Mb
Windows 2000 server, acts as PDC.

Launch a 100Mo file copy on PDC. It takes 2 minutes. Uh oh? It's less
than 8Mbits/s transfer rate... Sound strange, huh? Well, let's test the
NAS server (Dell PowerVault 705N), it takes 40 secondes. Sound better.
Let's try the Windows 2000 computer of my colleague: 12 secondes. Doh!

If you search "PDC slow transfer file" in groups.google.com, you'll find
a various bunch of problems, both samba PDC or Windows PDC related. But
without any clear solution.

All the file transfer have been done from a windows computer TO a PDC
computer. If I work with a big file located on the PDC, the saving is
slow too: the progress run fast, but the program is freezed until the
save is done. I use OpenOffice (at home) with a 18MB file and Word XP
(at work) with a 5MB file. I use Explorer for file transfer too, which
is better than other programs: the progress bar is real.

Then, several questions come in my mind:
Did you ever experimented such a problem?
Is a "normal" transfer rate for a PDC?
related: is a non-PDC samba computer run faster?
Is someone have some clues to help me pointed out the misconfiguration?
(I'm not responsible for the Windows 2000 PDC configuration, that's why
I'm puzzled with this results)
The purpose of this post is to do the right configuration for Samba as a
PDC, at decent speed, not to configure our Windows 2000 PDC (none of my
buizness, in fact)
Oh yes, Is someone, who had problems with oplock before 2.2.6, got a
working version of oplock system with this fresh version? (I don't want
to change the customer version if this is useless for the problem they
have)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Joe,

Suggest you contact a local PC reseller and ask for the price of MS
Windows 2000 Advanced Server and the price of Windows 2000 Server Client
Access Licenses (CALs).

Assume you find that MS Windows 2000 Advanced Server will cost you
$1000.
Assume that MS Windows 2000 Server CALs (Client Access Licenses) will
cost
you $40 per PC.

If you have a multi PC network, you would spend:

No. of Servers X $1000 = Server license costs
No. of PCs x $40 = Client Access Licensing costs

Now, find out what will be the cost of Software Assurance and add that
to
the mix above. The result is what you pay for MS Windows at the back
end.

Now add to that the cost of IT staff to manage the server installation.

To compare the cost of Samba:
No. of Servers X cost of (Linux _or_ FreeBSD) = Server OS costs
No. of PCs x Nothing for CALs = Nothing

Add cost of staffing to keep systems alive, bingo - you are home!

But what value are you going to place on:

1. Higher and more reliable uptime?
2. Ability to change code to do what you want?
3. Better ability to configure the servers
- ie: Samba does great server consolidation
- ie: Samba allows multiple personalities per server
4. Total control of feature creep. ie: With Samba you upgrade
only
if you want to. There are still servers running
samba-1.9.15p8 (Dates to around NT3.5)
5. Samba gives you more performance out of your hardware
- lower hardware costs

Maybe some other budding list member can give you more factors to
consider.

We're running an Access database from Samba, 3 users, with no problems.
Just upgraded from Samba 2.2.5 to 2.2.6. Linux 2.4.18. Oplocks are
switched off for all shares. Access 98 and 2000 from NT4 and W2k
workstations. We migrated from NT4 server to Samba a few months ago.

Is your database split into a backend and frontends? Every machine here
has its own frontend (also located on the Samba server for convenience of
upgrading) and a shared backend. Sharing frontends can be problematic,
whatever server OS you're running, as Access saves various settings
related to the session in this.

testparm and checkpc seem happy. Printer spool directories are owned by the

RE: [Samba] MS Access and Samba

2002-10-18 Thread Glenn Scherb
I develop large laboratory databases with MS Access. All my back end
servers are Samba 2.2.4 on FreeBSD. The key to multi-user success lies
in these configuration points:

1. Always run the Access database application, (Forms, code,
queries, ...) on a client workstation and have the back-end data on the
server. The application container links to the shared tables on the
server.
2. Oplocks = no
3. Kernel Oplocks = no
4. Level2 Oplocks = no
5. Blocking Locks = yes
6. Locking = yes
7. Strict Locking = no
8. Share Modes = yes

Success will be improved if you follow the pessimistic locking model for
most of your data access. This means that the edited record is always
locked. You should do this regardless of whether you use Windows or
Samba on your back end server. This also applies to point number 1.

Hi,

we still have some trouble running a MS Access-database on Samba. We now

tried it with v.2.2.6 on RH 7.3 but still we either get no acces on the
database simultanously or we run in problems with updating the database.

The problem is that we make some changes on one of the clients but the
changes are not visible to the other clients until they shut down the
database and reopen it. We tried all lock options but there appears
always
one of the problems described above. If we disable oplocks in any way,
only
one client can open the db.

We also tried to update the W2K-clients to SP3 because I read something
about problems with oplocks on W2K-SP2 but nothing helped. A Google
search
on this problem brought up an article that MS Access has huge problems
running on Samba or any other file-server-system than Windows.

Has anyone ever get an Access-db running on more than 2 clients
simultaneously and if yes, could you please give us some helpfull hints
?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Samba] Resolving NetBIOS names within linux

The libnss_wins is working (now that I've upgraded to Samba 2.2.5), but

describe your configuration a little more. How your getting DHCP to
update your DNS.

Thanks.

Is there any way I can do this?

By definition, the 2.5.x kernel tree is a development tree.
Network cards are cheap. I would recommend buying a card supported
by a 2.4 Linux kernel and trying to reproduce the issue in that setup.
I don't think spending time trying to track down an interop bug with
2.5 would be the most effective thing for us to do right now.

Like the other poster said: It seems to depend on the application. The
Access engine (JET?) is used by at least one app I know and it works
fine with Samba. Can you reproduce the problem when sharing the database
from NT4/W2k/XP computer?

I have 2 Samba servers. One on a RedHat 6.2 (kernel 2.2x) and one on a
RedHat7.2 server. On both of these servers I can have a database open by
more than one user. User one can make a change in a table, then close the
table. User two can then open the table and see the updated records. (The
database is generally single user, but I did some light tests just now out
of curiosity from your post.)

Access/Win settings:
Both clients use Access 2000 with all OfficeUpdate patches.
Client 1 was Win2K + SP3
Client 2 was WinXP + SP1
Database is nothing special, tables, querys, forms, etc.

Samba settings:
Both servers are members of an NT domain.
Neither server uses oplocks.
The 7.2 server runs 2.2.1a (stock RedHat rpms)
The 6.2 server runs 2.2.5 with some of the printing patches.

All of the oplock settings are set to no, except for the veto oplock
parameter which is unset. If you are interested in other smb.conf
parameters, let me know.

2002-10-18 Thread Simon Chambers
Try mounting the windows PC onto a directory for example /mnt/winpc
using smbmount.

If you do this, then you will actually see any error messages if they
occur, and if it mounts ok, then it could be a problem with the way the
browser is doing network stuff. If you do get an error, you can work
from there.

RE: [Samba] MS Access and Samba

2002-10-18 Thread Noel Kelly
Not sure if this has anything to do with Samba:

I try and stay away from Access but a few years ago we had similar problems
with Access on a Novell server. It kept corrupting and looking at the
Access documentation it seems that Access is not a multiuser database unless
you program it to be. So you need to manually code all the database locking
etc - an out-of-the-box one is only good for single user.

[Samba] Please help, going mad with permissions

2002-10-18 Thread rod
Dear SAmba

Sorry to trouble you again but here is my problem.

I want to have a directory writeable only for users in a unix group
"accounts"

so i need to do two things.

1. Create the group and user in linux
2. Create the relevant masks for the samba share for this directory

so i do this:

1 # mkdir /dev/accounts
2. # chgrp accounts /dev/accounts
3. # chmod 0770 /dev/accounts ##i think these are right for
Owner & group ###

in my smb.conf

[accounts]
browseable = yes
path = /dev/accounts
read only = no
write list = @accounts
create mask = 770
directory mask = 770

i have added a user to the /etc/groups file using vi to the accounts group

from my windowsnt4 pc

i attach to the network share ok
if i attempt to create a new folder i am told that i may not be able to
access files under it
if i attempt to create a file under the share i get access denied.

what chmod to i need on the directory and what "masks" are needed in the
smb.conf, i seem to be going round in circles!!!

i know this is so so simple but it is driving me nuts.

kind regards
rod

Re: [Samba] winbind question

2002-10-18 Thread daniel . jarboe

every time a cron job runs I get this in my log.winbindd
[2002/10/17 13:45:00, 1] nsswitch/winbindd_group.c:winbindd_getgroups(815)
 user 'root' does not exist

the three important lines in my /etc/nsswitch.conf is:
passwd: files winbind nisplus
shadow: files nisplus
group: files winbind nisplus

This is probably due to looking up secondary groups (i.e. the group:
line) not getpwnam() calls.

Okay, thank you, I think I finally get how this works:
When figuring out what groups jarboed is in, first /etc/groups gets hit
for secondary groups. *After that, winbind gets hit to see if jarboed
is in any other groups.* When "winbind use default domain = no" in
smb.conf (the default) winbind doesn't bother checking because there is
no domain associated with "jarboed", but when "winbind use default
domain = yes" in smb.conf, winbind will hit the PDC to determine what
groups MY_DOMAIN+jarboed is in and tack on the additional
MY_DOMAIN+Domain Users, etc, groups to the list of secondary groups for
jarboed?

And for system accounts that don't exist on the PDC (mostly all of
them), winbindd_getgroups just spits up the error that there is no such
domain user (like "root") to be in any groups?

Have you looked at the nss_ldap issue?

Some versions of nss_ldap < 200 would mask our SIGPIPE handler, causing
smbd to just drop dead if the connection to somthing else (like a DC
etc) died. This could cause all sorts of issues - particuarly timeouts
as the rest of the system waited for the non-existant smbd to reply.

Re: [Samba] Netlogon no longer works in 2.2.6 with W2k client

2002-10-18 Thread Rob Thomas
Hi
Just got this quote from the Samba-BDC-HOWTO,
"Note that in the latest Samba 2.2.x releases, the machine SID (and
therefore domain SID) is stored in the private/secrets.tdb database"
Therefore you might have had a new secrets.tdb generated depending on how
you upgraded. Which probably means you now have a new machine\domain SID
which is why you had to rejoin all of your Win2K clients. Also if you have a
BDC set up you'll have to re-export the PDC's machine.SID from the
secrets.tdb and install it on the BDC. Might be a good idea to start backing
up the secrets.tdb file in case you need to rebuild your domain.
I'm still trying to work our what each tdb stores and until I know I'm
making sure I have backups of them all and keep them when upgrading.
Although I'm not sure if the Samba install keeps, overwrites or backup these
tdb files (I use the rpm install). Also I'm not sure if the internal tdb
structure will have changed between Samba versions.

first of all Thanks for any help.

I would like to share with SAMBA a Unix path to Windows clients.
The problem i have is this:

I want that this share would be READONLY for someone (or somewhat TCP/IP address) and
READABLE/WRITABLE for someone else (even if throught a user/passwd authentication).

I'm using Samba 2.2.6 and Wnt/W2k clients.

I'm trying to setup my environment fixing the following smb.conf options:

security
map to guest
guest account
guest ok
username
read only

and with the standard Unix permissions (user, group, others).

Am i on the right way or not ?
Do you think is it possible ?

[Samba] nmbd and the Domain Master Browser

2002-10-18 Thread Andy Canfield
My server's /var/log/syslog file is filled with:
Oct 18 13:07:38 bangkok nmbd[13656]:
Unable to find the Domain Master Browser
name BANGKOK<1b> for the workgroup BANGKOK.

The network is a bunch of Windows 98 workstations and a Linux server. We have Samba
set to be the WINS server, but there is no "DOMAIN MASTER BROWSER" as such at all,
anywhere.

When we installed the server a month ago we set up Samba to use computer name
"BANGKOK" in workgroup "BANGKOK". But Windows 98 seemed to hate having a computer and
a workgroup with the same name, so we changed the Samba computer name to "SBANGKOK".
The file /etc/samba/smb.conf (as maintained by webmin) contains these lines (as shown

[Samba] Netlogon no longer works in 2.2.6 with W2k client

2002-10-18 Thread René Nieuwenhuizen
Hi,

We've got a fairly simple samba setup (no ldap/winbind etc) and until
recently everything worked fine (using samba-2.2.5). But after switching
to samba-2.2.6 w2k-clients fail to run the netlogon-scripts. When i look
at the client it says: logonserver=\\

BTW. The output of "nmblookup -S CPB" (to me) seems to say that CPB is
the logonserver.

[Samba] Send message

Thank you.Get a bigger mailbox -- choose a size that fits your needs.

[Samba] Re: windows xp connect to share - cannot change user name from guest

2002-10-18 Thread matthew arnison
Well I'm a bit embarassed. The problem turned out to an old version of
samba running on the server. It's running samba 1.9.18p8.

I'm not a system admin on the main server here. But I tried connecting to
another box running samba 2.2.3a, and found I could type into the
username box just using a normal network neighbourhood connection. The
username field was *not* greyed out, like it was when connecting the same
way to the older version of samba.

I switched back and forth several times and found it was repeatable. It's
also independent of whether the passwords are encrypted or not on the
samba 2.2.3a server.

Sorry for bothering the list earlier with an out of date version of samba.
Perhaps though this might help others diagnosing this problem in future.

Cheers,
Matthew.

You do not mention the size of your network. Here I have 12 WinNT

instead of using samba to do that job I use BIND (DNS Server) and DHCP Server

Kernel bug - definately. You might want to bring it to the attention
of the FAT32 maintainer in the 2.5 kernel.

[Samba] samba & fat32 lockup my linux machine

2002-10-18 Thread dmarcelino
My problem is that whenever I try to copy a large file from a client machine to a
fat32 partition (ext3 works fine) mounted under samba, the host linux machine will
lock up completely. I can, however, copy small files to the fat32 partition just fine
(ie. 1 KB to 1 MB size file), it's only when I copy files that are about 200 MB and
larger, that the computer will lockup.
NAT still functions, but telnet will no longer work and the host keyboard becomes
completely unresponsive. All the host processes lock up (web server, swat, etc), and
I can only press the reset button to get the machine up again.

I've searched the mailing archives for a solution, but only found a person with a
similar problem who received no responses.

I've used the linux kernels 2.5.30 to 2.5.43, and have tried samba 2.2.5-2.2.6, and
the problem exists through all of them. I can ftp large files to the fat32 partition
just fine, so I really believe the issue lies in samba. I cannot switch the partition
to a different filesystem, because I need the data on the drive to be accessible by
Windows 2000 as well. Also, I need to use the linux 2.5.x kernel, because 2.4.x does
not correctly support my network cards, and ide controller.

I'd really appreciate anyone's help on this issue.

[Samba] Windows PDC with Samba PDC

2002-10-18 Thread Gagneet Singh
Hi!
We have a windows NT PC as our PDC. Currently planning on migrating to
UNIX / Linux.

For testing we have put up a Linux Red Hat 7.2 System, with Samba 2.2.5,
which I configured on it. Now the problem arises when the users for Linux
want to access to Windows NT computer. If they are not users on the NT
system they are unable to do so.

I learnt that we can make the Samba machine join the Windows Domain by
making use of the commands:

   smbpasswd -j NTDOM -r NTDOMPDC

where the Domain name is NTDOm and the name of the domain controller
is NTDOMPDC.

Will this work? I just want to make sure before embarking on this issue.
