[Samba] samba printerserver and NT-drives?

2003-07-14 Thread Nykänen Arto
I have successfully installed samba 2.2.8a-1 printserver.

No I have created 2 "dummy devices", which use the ps2pdf script to change the
PS-input to pdf.
One I share with name pdf_W2K and another as a pdf_NT.

I have managed to create the print$ and configured the driveruploading so that
users with NTadmin rights and/or domain admin rights can install printers on
XP/W2K/NT.
Users with normal rights can install both printers on W2k or XP, BUT not to NT.

Nt says that user privileges are not sufficient, because the driver should be
installed locally! I really dont want to run and install it on 580 computers

Could anyone help me with this?

I really wouldnt want to go and mess with the userrights in NT-domain.

[Samba] Authenticating Samba with Lotus Domino LDAP

2003-07-14 Thread Sanjeev \"Ghane\" Gupta
Folsk,

We are running Lotus Domino as our messaging server. In one of our
offices, I need to put up a large file share. Once this is up, I
forsee other groups also asking for central storage.

Can I ask Samba to check username/passwords from Domino? There is an
LDAP server in there, and I know the exact two fields I need to check.

Any pointers, please?

[Samba] passwd chat debug

2003-07-14 Thread Benilton de Sa Carvalho
Hi all,

I'm trying to set up my "passwd chat", then I was adviced to use:

passwd chat debug = yes
debug level = 103
encryp passwords = no

But I can't find the "chat" inside log.smbd

What am I doing wrong?

Cheers,

You're looking in the wrokg place... Look in the machine.log where "machine"
is the smbname of the WS trying to change the password you should see
something like this:

[2003/07/14 16:08:24, 3] smbd/sec_ctx.c:set_sec_ctx(329)
  setting sec ctx (0, 0) - sec_ctx_stack_ndx = 1

The process exited while we were waiting

different than what it is receiving. Question is why * doesn't really match
like it says in the man page?! Anyway carefully crafting the chat sequence
you can overcome this "small issue"... ;-)

You mean you "grep expect /var/log/samba/*" and you and you end up empty
handed? Woops! :-|

I do believe you but is sounds very strange... This was the limit of my
trouble with the password change in samba. After many restarts I've got a
chat sequence that worked. Yet I say that the sollution should be deduced
from the logs...

Some gurus should step in and enlighten us... :-)

So don't start from W2K, start from linux login on the samba server; can you
change it from bash prompt as that user or not?! If you set unix password
change = no you should be able to do smbpasswd username and "basta"! Ok, as
as a paranoia test do also a smbmount '\\mysambaserver\myshare'
/mnt/somewhere -o username=mysambaname and if it works it means the samba
infrastructure is OK nomatter what, it's got to be in W2K; or at least
AFAIK...

Why do you insist so much in keeping the UNIX pass in sync anyway? :-o

[Samba] Samba 3.0 beta with Kerberos support

2003-07-14 Thread Markus Moeller
It seems I am missing some parts for setting up samba with Kerberos support.

I can successfully connect with smbclient -k to a Windows XP,2003 server. But
when I run smbd with

security = ADS
realm = MYREALM.COM

and a working krb5.conf. ( kerberised telnet/ftp/etc works) I get an error
message on Windows XP/2003.

Also if I try to connect with smbclient -k I get NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
and the server finishes with

Doing spnego session setup
NativeOS=[Unix] NativeLanMan=[Samba]
Got OID 1 2 840 48018 1 2 2
Got OID 1 3 6 1 4 1 311 2 2 10
Got secblob of size 1660
failed to fetch machine password
Failed to verify incoming ticket!
error string = File exists
error packet at smbd/sesssetup.c(177) cmd=115 (SMBsesssetupX)
NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
created /tmp/SMBsesssetupX.78.resp len 39

Where does the "failed to fetch machine password" error come from ? A trace
of the server doesn't show any attempt of reading krb5.conf nor krb5.keytab.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Markus

[Samba] samba via ssh; some W2000 do not.

2003-07-14 Thread Vizitiu, Ciprian

Samba 2.2.8a. Since (Free)Swan flew into ground I've started to use
openssh to connect to the samba server. So far so good, what I do is to
forward 139 and then declare the samba server to be 127.0.0.1 in lmhosts on
the Windows WS. It worked well for all XPs Pro that I have tested but in 2
out of 3 W2000 Pro it did not. That is typing in explorer
\\sambaserver\drive like I do in XP resulted in a blocked explorer. Of
course doing net use X: \\server\drive works but my users are scared to
death of the command prompt; I can't seem to be able to do "net use" from a
.bat that is without having the user to type the commands and password; I
don't even know where to start from as my usual
Linux-Ethereal-10MB_plain_old_Hub tool does not work, I don't speak natively
blowfish... *ANY* hints would be greatly appreciated. :-|

[Samba] Win XP SP1 can not log on twice

2003-07-14 Thread Dendik
Hi, everybody.

I have installed samba recently and right now i try to
make it a PDC for several XP clients.

I had no problems making it PCD and configuring it
overall (thanks to quite good docs). Then i created a
single test user and had the following problem: this
user has perfect first login, he can change settings,
save them to server and XP even decides quite good,
what to store on server, and what is better to leave on
local machine. But when i try to log in from other
machine, or from the same machine after the user has
logged off and saved his profile on server, i have
windows waiting long trying to "Load your personal
settings" and then complaining about: "Windows can not
find the local profile and is logging you with a
temporary profile. Changes made to this profile will be
lost when you log off.". On the server side this
results in one clone of smbd hanging and not responding
to any signals except SIGKILL, and one LOCK of
NTUSER.DAT and somethimes also ntuser.ini being held.
On a machine with fixed policies (actually i did also
change local defaults in mmc and maybe also something
else of that kind) the message is a bit different and
XP just loggs of instead of logging on with local profile.

Will be glad for any help.
(please send cc: to my address since i'm not subscribed
to the list)

 Dendik.

PS. Attached are smb.conf and smbpasswd if they are of
any help.

[Samba] Odd Samba Related issues...

2003-07-14 Thread Robert Adkins
Hello All,

I have been experiencing some slightly off issues with Samba on
our main Primary Domain Controller recently. The client systems have, on
occasion, coughed up an error stating that either the machine account or
the password for the user account is invalid, when it is in fact VERY
valid.

The server itself is rarely ever over 1.43 in load average,
determined through using Top and most of the time, the server is
hovering at less then .92 Load average. I have been unable to test, so
far, but it appears that this issue might be occurring during those
higher load average times.

This load average issue didn't exist until recently with the
addition of some synchronization scripts that run several times a day.
This scripts duplicated data from the main server to the "Hot Back-up"
server. So, all of this could be related to disc access.

I don't believe that it is related to the network, since the
synchronization occurs over a "separate" network that only the two
servers sit on, which has a separate addressing scheme as well as
physically separate NICs and a 10/100 Switch in-between them.

Any suggestions? Need more Information?

[Samba] cant ceate home directory

2003-07-14 Thread LabCeitba
Hi, im from argentina. Im working for a local University who has many lab`s. One of
them has 30 machines with dual boot, nt workstation and Linux Mandrake 9.0, and a PDC
nt server 4.0.
I`d installed samba on my Mandrake`s, and work just fine, but when i try to create a
local home directory for the users, a message pop`s, and says cant ceate home
directory /home/user_name.
Permissions on that directory are fine...
I configured smb.conf just like all books and Samba book seed, and nothing happens.
The rest of the config seems to be fine, because the user can logging to the PDC.
Is anyway i can solve my problem??.
Or any documentation
can you help me??
Tanks a lot for all...!!

[Samba] Having problems connecting xp machine to samba

2003-07-14 Thread Armando Colpa
In my case, I've attempted to set up a Redhat linux 9.0 box as a primary
domain controller. I have a windows xp machine (professional) and am
attempting to connect to the pdc. However, I continually receive a network
path not found error. When I look within the log.smbd file, I see a number
of Denied connection from (client ip address) messages. Here are some things
to note:

1. There IS another domain controller on the network, however, it is
not a SAMBA pdc. I've seen instructions that say there should not be another
pdc on the network, but I'm assuming that means a samba pdc. I don't know if
that makes a difference.
2. I tried adding machine accounts both manually and through the "add
user script" directive in smb.conf. None worked
3. I've seen instructions regarding changing local security policies.
Specifically, I've read messages regarding "Locate the entry "Domain member:
...". Furthermore, I've read that sometimes you don't need to follow those
commands and simply need to add a registry patch. In my case, I was not able
to find the entry "Domain member" and simply added the WinXP_SignOrSeal
registry patch. That may or may not cause a problem. However, I didn't know
what to do considering the entry I was supposed to find was not listed.

Any help that someone could give me regarding this would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Note that I'm attaching my smb.conf file.

It makes all the difference in the world. There should be ONLY one PDC.
Period. Be it NT, 2000, XP or samba. So make up your mind either samba or
the other box.

If you allready have a PDC maybe you're looking to security=domain in your
smb.conf file. In that moment your samba box will ask the PDC "is john with
this password the person who pretends he is?" This is authentication. Then
somehow you must tell samba that user john should access only /someshare.
This is authorisation. All the above happen only if you've joined samba to
the domain controlled by the PDC. You need an user account in that domain
that is allowed to add machines to domain and do a smbpassd -j

[Samba] Network printing HP 843C over Samba

2003-07-14 Thread Gustavo Pipman
Hay all.
I've been setting up a linux gateway with an ADSL connection and three windows boxes
in a home network.
Everything has gone smoothly with Red Hat 9 and data transfer rates have risen due to
having a linux gateway instead of an Windows XP gateway.
However, I've had horrible problems setting up network printing. I've got Samba set up
and that is working fine with various shares that I've set up. I've
finally managed to get CUPS set up with the HP 843C.
But, I can not get any of the windows boxes to print to this printer.
In my samba smb.cnf file I have the following:
[
[global]
workgroup = PIPMANS
encrypt passwords = yes
[homes]
browseable = no
map archive = yes
[printer843C]
printable = yes
print command = /usr/bin/lpr -r %s
printer = LP_Mamad
printing = CUPS
read only = yes
guest ok = yes
[test]
comment = For testing only, please
browseable = yes
read only = no
guest ok = yes
valid users = gpipman
path = /home/gpipman/test
The cups is set up as a parallel printer URI parallel:/dev/lp0 and there is no
internal firewall.
In /etc/printcap I have:
LP_Mamad:
which is the name of the printer as defined in cups. Now, all the windows boxes say
they can see this printer, but none print successfully to it. I've
downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the HP site and installed them.
Are there any special settings that I should know about?
I am desperate here - I can not figure out why this isn't working. CUPS doesn't even
register that the windows clients are trying to send a print job to the
printer.
I'm not particularly bothered about using CUPS - if someone has this printer (or
similar) working successfully under LPRng (or equiv) then I'd be very
grateful to hear about it. I just really need this printer working.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.
Attached with it is a log file obtained with the following command
tcpdump -c 100 -vv -s 0 -a -w smb.log host 192.168.0.5 and not port 23

sonjay,

Try just this part of your command line:

smbpasswd -j linux-net -r 192.168.0.1

If I include the administrator info, it fails,
but this works. Make sure you've already
added the machine account to the domain.

RE: [Samba] Max Print Jobs Problem

2003-07-14 Thread Van Sickler, Jim
Chuck,

Try setting Max Print Jobs = 0 (unlimited),
restart samba, then run "testparm -x" to
see if the change took effect.

NOTE: I just changed the value, and ran
"testparm -x" without restarting samba,
and the value changed from the default
of 1000 to 0. I'd still restart, just
to be sure the running daemon reread
smb.conf.

[Samba] RedHat 9.0 winbind, and Pam login

Is there someone that could send me a sample /etc/pam.d/login file that
works on Redhat 9.0. My winbind set now seems to be working fine. When I
do a wbinfo -a ., my authenticfication works for both text and

[Samba] Print quota still not working

2003-07-14 Thread Shanti Katta
Hi all,

I posted about this issue few days back, but haven't gotten any
appropriate response yet. Also, I haven't progressed any further by
searching google or mailing lists.

I am running CUPS-1.1.19-final and samba-2.2.8a on a highly available
Debian server. I grabbed "cups-samba-1.1.19 drivers for Windows" from
Cups website for automatic driver download to work on Windows clients
which are also claimed to account page printing correctly. But, I have
not been able to get quotas to work based to page-count
(job-page-limit), although it works with job-k-limit option.

I read that CUPS does not count pages correctly if printing in "raw"
format and hence logs "1" for every job in page_log. Till few days back,
I had pages being logged in /var/log/cups/page_log, but now it doesn't
seem to log anything in there.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Shanti

[Samba] ACLs and file copies/permissions

2003-07-14 Thread Tom Dickson
Hello all,

I want to make a Samba server act as much like an 2000 machine as possible.
I've successfully got winbindd running, and also have compiled ACLs into the
kernel and the XFS filesystem.

What settings to I want to use in the smb.conf file to make it as close to
2000 as possible? I want to minimize the necessity of admining the box from
the Linux side.

Currently I have issues with default permissions (removing Everyone group,
etc) (I have 2.2.5 right now). I think I'm going to have to tune the set
directory mode/mask parameters, and I'm wondering if anyone has this
working.

This message (from the technical list)
http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba-technical/2002-April/035899.html
sounds like what I want; but I don't want to run Samba 2.2.3.

I've read that Samba ACLs were changed in 2.2.8a (back ported from 3.0), so
should I stick with 2.2.8 or move to 3.0?

Also, what is the status on this
http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba-technical/2003-June/045448.html
issue?

Also, is it possible to give REAL full control to someone who is not the
owner, or do I have to use the Windows chown program written by samba team
first?

In other words, tell me everything you know about ACLs! :) Actually, if I
get enough information I can help update the Samba HOWTO for this purpose.

Thank you!

Tom

Before you get too involved, it's worth knowing that Samba cannot fully
duplicate Windows file permissions - it only exposes the functionality
given by POSIX ACLs. That is, you can have multiple users/groups on a
file, but each entry (ACE) only has read, write or execute as per Unix
standards, and some special groups (eg. "Authenticated Users") will not
work.

I think 3.0 works a little better in this regard, however it seems that
you can never actually remove the Everyone group - you can only take
away all of its permissions.

Haven't seen this one myself.

Only if they act as root on the Unix machine (use the "admin users"
parameter in smb.conf). You can give read, write and execute access to a
file to anyone, but only root can change ownership of a file (this is a
Unix-imposed condition). You can specify @groupname (eg. "@DOMAIN\Domain
Admins") to give a whole group admin access.

I would recommend (if you haven't already) that you read the relevant
parts of the latest HOWTO collection document at:

http://samba.org/~jht/NT4migration/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf

There is also an unofficial Samba+ACL HOWTO (written by me):

http://www.bluelightning.org/linux/samba_acl_howto

I will be uploading an updated version when I get home this evening (in
about 8 hours). Corrections welcome.

[Samba] Creating domain users - how?

2003-07-14 Thread Paul Parsons
The problem is - how do I do it? It seems to be such an easy question
but I've failed to find it in the documentation. (I'm trying to follow
"How to Configure Samba 2.2 as a Primary Domain Controller" which I was
pointed to by SWAT.) I'm guessing the solution's obvious, but if so, I
hope somebody can help easily.

I've used samba for a few years (so I'm not a complete newbie), but now
I'm trying to use it as a PDC for the first time. It's a simple network
consisting of a Mandrake Linux 9.1 m/c acting as the DNS and PDC, and a
Win2K workstation. It's samba version 2.2.7. The samba configuration
seems OK so far as SWAT is concerned and I've tried using a share
successfully. The config includes the netlogon share as documented.
I've successfully persuaded a Windoze m/c to join the domain.
The Windoze m/c's name is in both /etc/passwd and /etc/samba/smbpasswd.
The dollar sign is at the end of the name in both cases.
I've also added root in /etc/samba/smbpasswd.
I've created a user (which I intend will be a domain user) in
/etc/passwd and in /etc/samba/smbpassed.

Now what? I don't know what to do next.

What worries me is that there doesn't seem to be a way of telling the
Windoze m/c what password you've entered for it on the PDC. Anyway...

If I try to add the user in Win2K using "Control Panel/Users and
Passwords/Add/Browse" and tell it to use the root user and password, it
successfully returns a list of users on the linux m/c, including the
one I want to be a domain user. However, when I select my "domain" user
and proceed in the wizard I get the following error message:
"The user could not be added because the following error has occurred:
The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain
failed."

I've also tried ignoring the fact that I haven't told Windoze anything
about this "domain" user. When I just try logging in as this user, it
says:
"The system cannot log you on to this domain because the system's
computer account in its primary domain is missing or the password on
that account is incorrect."

I can post the smb.conf file if necessary.

Thanks for any help...

Paul

[Samba] Expiração de Senha e Disk Quota no Samba

2003-07-14 Thread Vitor Alexandre S. Marinho
tempo?

[Samba] What things should I check?

2003-07-14 Thread Jim C
OK, got the Samba 3.0 LDAP migration script running and figured out how
to get data from an ldif back into the database so that I can restore
after makeing an attempt at 3.0 Problem is that I still have a
problem. I get a couple of pages of these errors in the logs:

Jul 14 16:31:00 enigma smbd3[8360]: [2003/07/14 16:31:00, 0]
lib/charcnv.c:convert_string(164)

available 32
Jul 14 16:31:00 enigma smbd3[8360]: [2003/07/14 16:31:00, 0]
lib/charcnv.c:convert_string(164)

Now if this is a database backend compatibility issue (i.e. I'm using
the old schema) then it is no problem.

[Samba] I like your software...

2003-07-14 Thread John Byrne
Unfortunately, just recently I started having
update problems. Now when I create a file on either the Windows
side or the Linux side the file doesn't show up in a listing
on the Linux side. So there's a small problem.

With it somewhere I can't figure it out yet. Anyway. Good
job on the file connectivity. (I'm connecting with Samba
to my Windows XP system.)

Feel free to contact me if you'd like... (I'll keep looking
for what my problem is in the manuals.)

Thanks for getting me this far!

[Samba] Win XP Client Samba 2.2.3a cannot connect

2003-07-14 Thread Paul Galbraith
I have the following smb.conf with samba 2.2.3a on debian 3.0:

[global]
encrypt passwords = yes
security = share
[pub]
path = /home/samba
writable = yes
guest ok = yes
guest only = yes

I've enabled the 'nobody' account in the smbpasswd file.

When I try to browse the available shares on the server from a Windows XP client, I
get numerous read errors in the smbd log file:

[2003/07/14 22:06:09, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(436)
read_data: read failure for 4. Error = Connection reset by peer

Win XP just hangs for a few minutes and then eventually responds that I'm unable to
access the network resource. However, I can successfully browse the share from an
openbsd machine using smbclient.

Does anyone know what's going on? TIA!

Re: [Samba] passwd chat debug

Hi,

> isn't it possible to set up a NIS machine (which is my Samba PDC and
> not the NIS master) to sync the passwords?
>
> While debugging the passwd chat, I saw it asks the root passwd...

When a windows user changes his password, the samba server only gets
the new password, not the old one. So you need a mechanism that is able
to change user's password without having the old one.

NIS is only able to do this on the NIS master, not on a slave server or
even a client: even root will be asked for the old password there.

So if you absolutely want this, you'll have to invent some mechanism
that transports the new password to the NIS master (securely please).

Christopher

[Samba] Vijay - samba box not seen in browse list.

2003-07-14 Thread Vijay Kumar
Hi,

I initially tried a RedHAt Linux 9.0 box to join in multiple domains, but
couldnt get it right.
Now I have two Win2K Domains A and B.
If I configure samba to be in Dmain A, I am able to see and browse the linux
box without any problems.
But if I change the workgroup to Domain B I am not able to see the machine
in that lbrowse list and nor am I able to acces it using the Domain
Controller of Domain B. I am able to access it from machine which are not
there in Domain B.
Actually DOmian B just conatins the domain controller and nothing else.

Below is output of testparm.
This is driving me crazy. I just need to access a folder from this domain
Controller B for some backup issues.
Please help.

Thank You,
Regards,
Vijay.
