[Samba] files between w2k domains...

2003-08-26 Thread Jose Santiago Oyervides Gonzalez
Hi,
I have a Mandrake 8.2 server with samba 2.2.5 installed.
My server has ftp and the files some users upload I move them to another
structure, this structure is shared via Samba with other users. I am in a
W2k Domain.(We are in the process to migrate to linux).

So, I have some users that move the files uploaded to their servers.

A few days ago, a user reported me he couldn´t see the files in his share,
(he knew he had some files) and their files were in his share,I could see
them via share in some machines in my domain. (Note that my user and I are
in different W2K Domains) but my client couldn't see them in any machine in
his domain.

I notice that if I accessed the share via IP \\x.x.x.x\myshare I could see
them, but if I accessed via name \\myserver\myshare I couldn't see them, in
some machines. (In other machines I could see them via share and IP address)

I asked my user to create folders and copy some files in the share, and I
couldn't see the folders he created neither the files!, that was very weird.

I did several restart to smb and winbind and the problem continued. After
that, I just stopped smb and winbind for several minutes, then start the
services and he finally could see his files, and move them to their machine.
The folders he created and the files were gone.

This is the relevant part of my smb.conf

workgroup = My_W2k_Domain
password server = DC1DC2
encrypt passwords = yes
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
winbind uid = 1-2
winbind gid = 1-2
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
wins server = X.X.X.X
dns proxy = no

#The share :
[Share_name]
  comment = MyShare
  path = /home/to/my/folder
  write list = @OtherDomain\Some_Group @OtherDomain\Other_group
OtherDomain\SomeUser @MyDomain\Domain Admins
  writable = no
  browseable = yes

In my log.machine:

[2003/08/19 11:54:57, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(349)
  Couldn't find account Otherdomain\someuser
[2003/08/19 11:54:57, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(349)
  Couldn't find account Otherdomain\someuser

I had had this problem before, (once in a while) but normally it was fixed
with just a restart to samba and winbind. This time really had me think.

I've looked in the list, and I couldn't find a similar case like mine, does
anyone know what happened?

Is there some kind of cache between domains and samba? or may be this is a
bug of my samba version...

Any idea would be great.
Regards.
Jose Oyervides.

One of the folders it doesn't copy is the (hidden) folder 'Local

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

[Samba] smbmount chooses wrong ip and fails!

2003-08-26 Thread Don Woodward
Hi,

I'm trying to use smbmount to mount a Windows XP Share.

On the WindowsXP machine I have multiple adapters (due to installing
vmware - www.vmware.com).

By default, these VMWare adapters also bind to Windows File Sharing.

When smbmount sends a broadcast packet to get the ip address of the host,
it gets back 3 ip addresses as follows:

nmb packet from 192.168.0.120(137) header: id=31847 opcode=Query(0)
response=Yes
header: flags: bcast=No rec_avail=No rec_des=Yes trunc=No auth=Yes
header: rcode=0 qdcount=0 ancount=1 nscount=0 arcount=0
answers: nmb_name=ZORK20 rr_type=32 rr_class=1 ttl=30
answers 0 char `.``... hex 6000C0A89A016000C0A83C016000C0A8
answers 10 char .x hex 0078
Got a positive name query response from 192.168.0.120 ( 192.168.154.1
192.168.60.1 192.168.0.120 )
internal_resolve_name: returning 3 addresses: 192.168.154.1 192.168.60.1
192.168.0.120

Then smbmount chooses to try to connect to one of the VMWare IP addresses as
follows:
Connecting to 192.168.154.1 at port 139
error connecting to 192.168.154.1:139 (Network is unreachable)
Error connecting to 192.168.154.1 (Network is unreachable)

It then stops without trying the other addresses.

Is there any way to get smbmount to either (1) continue and try all of the
addresses,
or (2) only try the 'real' address (in this case 192.168.0.120) ?

BTW, if I unbind Windows File Sharing from the VMWare adapters on the XP
machine,
then smbmount works, but I really want to robustify my usage of smbmount so
this
is not required.

Thanks,
-Don Woodward

My VMWare machine does this too; the only solution I've got is to use

2003-08-26 Thread Max Harvey

Subject: Re: [Samba] Moving Samba from one computer to another one
I need to move the samba server from one computer (samba
 2.2.3a, RedHat
7.2) to another one (samba 2.2.7). This server acts as a PDC.

Stop Samba on the new machine, delete MACHINE.SID and
 secrets.tdb (you
wouldn't needed copiing them), edit smb.conf on the new
 account and take
care to have domain master = no, start Samba on the old
 machine, start
Samba on the new one, then on the new one as root type
 smbpasswd -S . It
will store the domain SID of the old machine in secrets.tdb
 of the new
machine. Stop samba on both machine. Edit smb.conf on the new
 one, and
change domain master = yes. Thats all.

Firstly, I was off sick yesterday, so I am about 4 days behind on my
mail/lists, so if this questions has already been asked since your
reply, I apologise in advance...

This is all good if both machines are running, and I have recorded in my
machine migration section of my files, but I have a question along
similar lines...

I backup nightly (lots of various stuff), including the /etc/samba/.
Directory, /home/. Directory, /etc/passwd, /etc/group, /etc/shadow.

If I was required to do a complete restore of my samba PDC, on different
hardware, with only my backups (i.e. I couldn't do the migration method
you mentioned), how would I do it (oh yes, and are I missing any
important files in my backup selection)?

I am just wondering, as I have seen this sort of question mentioning the
SID problem before, and should really make sure my recovery plan is up
to scratch

Thanks in advance

Re: [Samba] Samba 3 problems with file read/writes

2003-08-26 Thread Lindsay Haisley
I should add to this that the Win system running Homesite is Win95.

Thus spake Lindsay Haisley on Mon, Aug 25, 2003 at 02:03:11PM CDT
I just updated my web server box, running Debian testing, to samba v3, and
am having some problems with a share. Can anyone advise me on this?

I have a share called allsrvr which is defined in my smb.conf file as
follows. Please note that security isn't an issue here. The server is
connected to my home system via a VPN and all smb/cifs ports are closed to
the world at the router at my colocation, so I can be liberal with my
 permissions.

 [allsrvr]
 hosts allow = all
admin users = fmouse, cheryl, mnature, cdbooks
 path = /
 mangle case = yes
 preserve case = yes
 writable = true
 dos filemode = yes

I can mount this share OK, and do simple file operations, but something
changed between Samba 2 and Samba 3 which makes file operations from my HTML
editor, HomeSite, go south, although they worked fine with Samba 2.
Homesite modifies files on the server using a samba share. It makes a
temporary working copy of a file in the same directory as the live copy,
prefixed with ~hs. The built-in browser (IE) accesses this file and
updates whenever characters are typed in the code editor pane. The
temporary file is apparently not being created, or is getting created with
less than all the data, and saves back to the live file often end up with a
zero length file, trashing all the work that's gone into it :-(

My log.smb shows entries such as the following:

 [2003/08/25 11:25:19, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_socket_data(342)
read_socket_data: recv failure for 4. Error = Connection reset by peer
 [2003/08/25 11:25:19, 1] smbd/service.c:close_cnum(873)
humbug (24.243.202.167) closed connection to service allsrvr

humbug is the name of the win box. On the Windows side, I get a non-helpful
I/O error and then a notice that another process has modified the file.
Reload? and if I say yes, I get the zero length file loaded.

I've tried mucking with various lock and caching parameters in smb.conf with
no luck. This all worked fine with Samba 2. Can anyone give me any help?
I'll be glad to try anything and report the results.

On our network the outlook files reside on the server rather than in in

[Samba] Printing to a windows printer

2003-08-26 Thread LinuxUser
Dear friends,

I have been wrestling with this for 3 days now, unsucesfully, and that is why
I ask for your help.

I have a network composed of 1 linux server, 1 linux desktop, 2 windowsXP and
1 windows 98.

The printer (Epson Stylus C42ux) is connected to the WindowsXp machine.
I have Samba and CUPS installed and (apparently) correctly configured at the
Linux server (Mandrake 9.1).

I am able to access shares in the Linux Server (/home) from the Windows XP
machine.

Now here comes my problem. I want to be able to allow both the Linux server
and the Linux desktop to print to the Windows XP printer.

The printer is shared as EPSONSty.

Some info:

Machine ip
WindowsXP 192.168.13.222
LinuxServer 192.168.13.216

I tried to set this up using the CIPS web based configuration utility
(localhost:631). I managed to create the printer, and CUPS says it is all
good to go.
I send a test page and nothing comes out of the printer. Checking the
/var/log/cups/error_lo I find:
Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds...

This keeps happening and nothing comes out of the printer.

So I started some troubleshooting:

smbclient //windowsxp/epsonsty
password:

the response:
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_DUPLICATE_NAME

hmmm Checked the /etc/hosts file and it is in there. IT IS the onlyu
machine by that name in the network...

Now if I try:
smblient //192.168.13.222/epsonsty
password:***

I get:

smb:\

Works! I can print file and it prints...

I am at a loss, it should be simple.

Any ideas?

 work...

nono you need to read what i said:

  changing WINS support = yes

to WINS server = 'ip address', i got the domain thing to work. I
kept
getting the same error you did.

i said 'changing', you cant have both WINS support (this makes Samba
THE
WINS server) and WINS server (this delegates the WINS support
elsewhere).

Yeah, but that is not the situation, because my Samba PDC _is my
WINS-server.

Thanks for your reply, but I am _SURE_ that it's nothing to do with my
configuration, but with the Windows-2000 SP3.

Since this Services Pack, Windows 2000 looks for an active directory.
Again, I tried from 2 machines now with Windows 2000 SP2 and everything
works just fine. As soon as I apply Service Pack 3, the error:

snip
The following error ocurred validating the name IFS.
This condition may be caused by a DNS lookup problem.
For information about troubleshooting common DNS lookup problems,
please see the following Microsoft web site:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=5171

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted.
[ OK ]
/snip

And I get the queries for _tcp._ldap.dc._msdcs.IFS. on bind log.

So clearly Microsoft is pushing their Active Directory on the
market...
(Good marketing skills those guys, really Microsoft style)

The only way I know how to solve it now is to reinstall all my
workstations with a clean win2k install and stop upgrading till service
pack 2, but ofcourse I do not really prefer this...

[Samba] Samba 3.0.0 PDC + Win2000 Client + Group Policies

2003-08-26 Thread Service Informatique
We want to build a Debian's unstable samba 3.0.0beta2-1 as PDC with plenty of
Windows 2K clients.

Joining the domain, Domain Logons, Roaming Profiles, Domain Groups, are Ok.

As we thought that Samba 3 cannot handle Win2K's GPOs (isn't it?), we tried
NT4 style Group Policies to restrict a bit users posibilities (as we have
students as users). Our opinion is that Mandatory Profiles are too restrictive.

So as explained in Windows 2000 Group Policy White Paper from Microsoft, at
IntelliMirror features w/out Active Directory chapter, we took a unicode
enabled poledit.exe, we removed #if and #endif lines from GPO's ADM templates
files and created with it the required NTconfig.pol in the netlogon share.

We tried DefaultUser, a DomainGroup (net groupmap...), a user, and the policy
didn't have any effect at all (we tried to login/logout, secedit /refresh,
and even some different case 4 ntconfig.pol just in case).

The surprising fact is that from another Win2k, with the same poledit and ADM
files, i can remotely connect (without any password) to the Win2K's logged
domain user's registry, and check some restriction's boxes, and IT WORKS, means
that the changes of the policy were applied directly into the registry (after
a reconnection or a restart of explorer.exe) !

It looks like the Win2K doesn't read any \\PDC\netlogon\NTconfig.pol at all,
as if he would have done without any NT4 style policies.

We'd like to have your feeling/opinions about it, as we're quite stucked...

[Samba] samba3.0.0rc1 - Problems managing groups with UsrMgr

2003-08-26 Thread Björn Petersen
Dear list,

I have two problems managing groups from Win2kSP2 client using UserManager
for domains.

My Linux user and groups are stored in OpenLDAP using pam_ldap+nss_ldap from Padl.
Due to the fact that the groups using the ou=Group organizationalUnit, I have set
in smb.conf the ldap group suffix = ou=Group (using ldapsam as passdb backend).
So the Linux group and the sambaGroupMapping use the same LDAP-Entry.

First problem:
--
If I try to delete a group using UsrMgr, I get the message Access Denied.
Nevertheless the group and the groupmapping are deleted, because I delete the
hole LDAP-Entry (including the groupmapping) in the delete group script.

Therefore, I checked the source and in rpc_server/srv_samr_nt.c I found in which
order samba delete groups:
1. check, if linux group exists
2. call the delete group script
3. cehck, if linux group is gone
4. delete the groupmapping

I think my problem is in step 4. delete the groupmapping. This, of couse, failed,
because in the delete group script I delete the hole LDAP-Entry (the groupmapping,
too).

I don't know if I something misconfigured in samba or in LDAP, but if I change the
order in rpc_server/srv_samr_nt.c (near line 3860) as follows:
1. check, if linux group exists
2. delete the groupmapping
3. call the delete group script
4. check, if linux group is gone

this works without any error messages. But, I am not sure, whether this is the right
way!?!

Second problem:
---
If I try to modify a group using UsrMgr, I get the message The groupname could not be
found
(this is a translation from german version). If I add and/or delete a user to/from a
group, the
scripts delete user from group and/or add user to group are sucessfully called.
There is no error message, if I change the discription of a group´, too.

Therefore, I checked the source and found this in passdb/pdb_ldap.c (near line 2007):
if (mods == NULL) {
DEBUG(4, (
return NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFULL;

If I change the return value from NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFULL to NT_STATUS_OK, everything
works
fine without any error messages. But, same as above, I am not sure whether this is the
right way!?!

Any comments, notes, help etc. are welcome.

Thank you for your time!

Cheers,

Bjoern

[Samba] Ads server = huh?

2003-08-26 Thread Aaron_Colichia
All,

I've installed a Redhat 9 system with all packages from 3 discs.

Now I've removed my samba 2 related packages and installed samba 3 using
rpm.

After setting up kerberos with my W2k system and testing that out
successfully

I set up smb.conf with security = ads etc

I've also set 'ads server' but this config option causes various samba
binaries to report

unknown parameter: ads server

What am I missing here ? Is the ads server option still an option ?

Thx

[Samba] Re: No Getent

2003-08-26 Thread C.Lee Taylor
Using winbind for authentication through PDC.

Problem: Some users do not get access to the samba share and some do.
When I do wbinfo -u the users who cannot access show up but when I do
getent passwd, they are not there. What does this mean?

It means that you likely do not have in your /etc/nsswitch.conf:

passwd: files winbind
shadow: files winbind
group: files winbind
Does one really need the shadow: files winbind? From the Samba HOWTO, it states only passwd and group need winbind.

Also, you might not have any more info for why getent does not displace the users from AD domain?

[Samba] PDC + LDAP + W2K-SP4 Domain logon

2003-08-26 Thread Dragan Krnic
Thanks for your reply, but I am _SURE_ that it's
nothing to do with my configuration, but with the
 Windows-2000 SP3.

I'm not so sure. Don't blame M$ too soon. Your use of
LDAP or how you use it may be the problem.

Since this Services Pack, Windows 2000 looks for an
active directory. Again, I tried from 2 machines now
with Windows 2000 SP2 and everything works just
fine. As soon as I apply Service Pack 3, the error:

I'm not sure it does, probably not. Do other posters
complain about PDC+LDAP+W2K-SP3-4? You can't be the
1st one with the problem. I don't use LDAP. SPs never
affected my clients, 2, 3, 4.

The only way I know how to solve it now is to
reinstall all my workstations with a clean win2k
install and stop upgrading till service pack 2, but
ofcourse I do not really prefer this...

Better analyze the login transactions for both SPs
in a higher level log to be a bit more sure what is
going on.

[Samba] Disable Roaming Profiles

How can I disable roaming profiles at the account level? If i leave

And secondly an unrelated question. My syslogs show the following:

not root..

and

passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldapsam_search_one_group(1646)

Anyone know why I would get this error?? I can only assume its trying
to connect at spencer and the ldap server refuses that. Do I need to
change some acl's in ldap?

Thanks,

enabling this.

Has anyone got the right option for samba-3.0.0beta3, or possibly an updated

smbpasswd when I'm log.

ex:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] usertest]$ smbpasswd
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : RAP86: The
specified password is invalid.
Failed to change password for usertest

so when I'm root, that's work

The log message for this case is:
[2003/08/26 11:59:11, 0] auth/pampass.c:smb_pam_chauthtok(692)
PAM: UNKNOWN PAM ERROR (19) for User: usertest

When I'm on a w2k workstation, the log say:

Re: [Samba] dual smb/nmb for interfaces

2003-08-26 Thread Patrik Gustavsson PS Sweden Senior Technical Consultant
Hi,

I use the following parameters in the smb.conf file(s):

interfaces = hahostix1/255.255.0.0
bind interfaces only = Yes(Bind nmbd/smbd only to the defined
interfaces)
lock dir = /opt/SAMBA/locks( Store lock info in a another directory )
pid directory = /opt/SAMBA/var/locks(Store pid-files in a another
directory )
log file = /opt/SAMBA/logs/logfile
smb passwd file = /opt/SAMBA/private/smbpasswd (Were to store the
smbpasswd file)

In this example I store the smb.conf in /opt/SAMBA/lib
The directory structure will be in this case:
/opt/SAMBA/lib/smb.conf
/opt/SAMBA/locks
/opt/SAMBA/logs
/opt/SAMBA/var/locks
/opt/SAMBA/private
The a start nmbd/smbd with -s path to smb.conf

[Samba] unable to share any files

2003-08-26 Thread Oscar Garcia
I have spent the whole day trying to make my network work, but I have
not been able to do it.

The situation is:
- a dell inspiron 8000 box with windows XP
- a Packard Bell chroma box with red hat 9.0 acting as a samba server

I have installed the RPM for the 3.0 version that I have found on
samba.org

I have tried to follow the directions given in the O'reilly book
available at the documentation section at the same site.

The problem is that I cannot access from windows the share I have
created in the server. Although, I can see the server from windows
Other computers in my workgroup, I can not connect to it. I am able
to communicate bidirectionally though (ping) without any problem.

My current configuration file smb.cnof:

[Samba] pam_smb Security Advisory - ALL versions as of 26-08-2003

2003-08-26 Thread Dave Airlie

This is to advise all pam_smb users that a possible remote root hole has
been discovered in versions of pam_smb.

Vunerable versions:

1.1.6 and older (all configurations)
2.0.0-rc3 and older (definite problem in non-daemon mode, daemon mode may
be safe but upgrade recommended).

It is recommended to upgrade immediately to either 1.1.7 or 2.0.0-rc5 both
of which are available from the samba.org mirror FTP sites, or from the
website below.

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has
assigned the name CAN-2003-0686 to this issue.

All distributions have been advised and updates should become available
throughout the next couple of days from the vendors.

Thanks to Craig Miskell for diagnosing this and contacting me.

[Samba] INTERNAL ERROR: Signal 11 in pid 5457 (3.0.0beta3)

2003-08-26 Thread Tom Dickson
By logging into a smbd server with the username HAENGINEERS\KMR, we are
able to cause a smbd panic every time. Other usernames
(HAENGINEERS\_TestME) work.

The stack trace is below, full logs and smb.conf are available on request
(don't want to saturate the list.)

I can't post to bugzilla as I can't register a new account as my incoming
mail is crippled by Sobig, et al hammering my mail server, so I'll be
watching http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba/2003-August/thread.html for
replies for the near future.

[Samba] UNSOLVED: Win2K clients and Samba PDC

2003-08-26 Thread sebastiand
Hi. Im trying to join win2k clients to a samba pdc, but im having problems...
Firstly i create the machine account manually from the samba pdc. the, when
i add the client from windows, it asks me for the name and the password
of an admin user. I enter it and then, the message of welcome to the ***
domain appears. I restart the machine, but then, when i try to logon against
the domain, i get an error like this:
The trust relationship between this workstation and the domain controller
failed
(the message may change a little, because im using a spanish version of
windows)
Some details:
PDC OS system: redhat 9.0
Samba Version: 2.2.7
Client OS: Win 2000 (spanish) SP 3

Samba is in user security level, with encryption = yes

I ve already joined win98 clients with no problems. but i cant do it with
the ones with win 2k. does anyone knows how to solve it?

[Samba] Re: Dual Samba with two nmbds

2003-08-26 Thread tarjei
Hi, please keep things on the lists :-)

Sorry for my direct email, however I have tried this for over a week with
out any success :-(. I used of course the 'interfaces' directive as well as
'bind interfaces only = yes'. This is working for the smbd file but not for
 the nmbd.

This is toolitle information for me to say anything. Would you mind posting
the output of your ifconfig command, smb.conf files, what versions of samba
you're running and what you want to accomplish?

Tarjei

I wonder how were you able to accomplish this, or is this requires a
modification to the Samba code (unique to SAMBA-TNG).

 Your help is much appreciated,

[Samba] Invalid auth info 68 or level 5 on schannel only prior to

2003-08-26 Thread Hose
logins
Reply-To:

I've sourced the groups, but haven't had any success with solving this
problem. Here are the details:

I have a debian/testing system running samba 3.0.0beta2-1. It was
working fine with the 2.x series, until I upgraded to 3.0. The debian
server (al) is a PDC for a small NT domain (isabela) with three
workstations, all running win2k pro. All but one work fine between each
other and al. The problematic workstation (he2) logs onto the domain
fine, can access shares all over the domain, however no other
workstation *or* the PDC can access shares on he2.

It gets weird though; if anyone logs onto he2 locally, THEN they can
access the shares over the network, ie if let's say a user named Brian
was trying to access a share on he2, it would give an access denied
message. This is either from a win2k workstation or using smbclient -L
//he2 -U Brian. However, if he sat down at he2, logged in, and possibly
logged out, he could go to any workstation (or use the smbclient
command) and suddenly, he2 gives him access to the shares.

Can anyone clue me in on what's going on? Here's the errors I get when
someone like the user Brian tries to access shares prior to logging in
locally:

log.he2:

Note that I even went so far as to deleting the machine account from the
smbpasswd db, passwd, and shadow, then rebooted he2 with it back in
normal workgroup mode, restarted samba, readded the he2 machine accounts
in, and added it back into the domain. Same thing.

Obviously, it kind of defeats the purpose of a network if someone has to
log in locally first to access things remotely. Anyone have some
insight?

Hi John,

This block is now in place. Let me know if trouble persists.
Thanks,

I have had one response from one of the Austrailan virus scanners
claiming that they have fixed their virus scanner.

For urgent issues like this it is better to write directly to
postmaster at samba.org -- I for one read that more frequently than s-t.
Ok, I will try to remember that.

I see that a old? virus claiming to be [EMAIL PROTECTED] and has
attempted to deliver three copies to the samba-vms list members.

Source: 65.96.38.72 - Comcast.net.

I would be surprised if anyone on the open-vms mailing list would object
to it being restricted to subscribers. I am switching to using the
newsgroups that mirror the Samba lists, as it is much more convenient
for reading.

Thanks,
-John

New samba not starting

2003-08-26 Thread Brian Tillman
I downloaded the recent 2.2.8 release of Samba and installed it on a VAX and
an Alpha. NMBD runs fine on each. However, I can't connect from another
(Windows XP) system and prior to the 2.2.8 install, I could. TESTPARM
reports this:

Load smb config files from /samba_root/lib/smb.conf
Processing section [homes]
Processing section [Tillman]
Loaded services file OK.
WARNING: lock directory /samba_root/var/locks should have permissions 0755

oplocks = No
level2 oplocks = Yes

I don't see the term oplocks mentioned in SMB.CONF anywhere, so what does
it mean? I did look for oplocks in the online docs and found that, by
default, both oplocks and level2 oplocks default to yes. How,
therefore, is oplocks getting set to off? Do I want them on or off for
VMS? Would they have an effect on logging in?

Well, after using SMBPASSWD to change my password to match my Windows
password, I can connect. I'd still like info on oplocks, though. Thanks.
