RE: [Samba] How to share WIN partitions from SAMBA (Dual boot) Srvrto WIN clients?

2004-04-02 Thread Malcolm Baldridge

There _is_ a write-read ntfs driver available for Linux. It's
called Captive. I've not tested it myself. So I can only inform.

Yes, I know. But it's dangerous to actually use, and can only be safely
used to overwrite files of exactly the same size, which has been used by
various Windows 2000/NT Administrator Password Reset tools.

It's *NOT* safe to use for writing/creating files the way you would normally
expect read/write support to work.

YOU WILL CORRUPT YOUR NTFS VOLUME!

[Samba] how to get logon.bat run with Administrator rights in domain logons?

On win XP Pro workstations it would be so convenient if the domain logon script which is stored on
the samba pdc could be made to run with Administrative (or System) privileges.

I know that I can interactively run another security context by choosing run as user but how could
I achieve this non-interactively and domain wide whilst a limited account is loggin in?

Thanks for any pointers.

[Samba] new user password question

Hi,

I'm running SAMBA 2.28 on FreeBSD 5.1 and i administrate the system with
the web interface 'webmin' and have done so with little problem for some
time. yet, today i added a new user to FreeBSD, and assumed that the new
user should be able to access my shares as; SAMBA is configured to
mirror the users in unix. The new user could not access any of the
shares from an XP as the newly created accounts, but could do so as my
own account. Upon closer viewing, i noticed the new users we being added
to SAMBA as 'Normal user' with 'No password'.
I run on my network a simple windows for workgroups set-up, and i have
been administering SAMBA with webmin without a hitch until now. What
should i be looking for? I cannot see any difference in the new user's
account in FreeBSD and my account, nor in the smb.conf file.

[Samba] Samba as NAS (Serving Win+Linux)

2004-04-02 Thread Michael Bellears
I am in the process of setting up a file server to serve both
Linux+Windows boxes (Users Maildirs(qmail), WebSites(With quotas),
etc..)

Is there any reasons one would not just run Samba? (Probably get a
biased opinion on this list!) - I have never used NFS, but have been
told it was a total bandwidth whore..

Would also appreciate anyones experiences(Difficulty in setting up,
scalability etc) with using either LDAP, Kerberos or (maybe?) Radius for
auth - As I've heard NIS has security issues..

Thanks in advance.

For the domain admins there aren't problem but for mapping two unix group
with the same nt group.

I have the necessity that 2 or plus group unix is mapped with the nt group
domain user.
This is not possible in Samba 3.0 - we require a one-to-one group
mapping.

[Samba] howtos about samba-3 ldap kerberos?

Hi!
I have one ldap/krb-kdc server running. Everything is working.
I also have a samba-3 server running on different computer. I can kinit and get
a ticket from the ldap/krb-kdc server
Now I just need to configure samba and pam to use krb as password backend and
ldap for user and computer info storing.
There's a lot of different howtos out there but no one seams to handle my
request above in a straight way. Sambas howto is very usefull but everything I
want to do is spread out in different parts.

Have anyone seen such link?

I would be very grateful!!

crutches - life with LDAP is infinitely easier when you can get command
of the ldap queries from the command line. That sharpens your
understanding and skills of using LDAP.
 ---

Well, sometimes the best way is the simple way. Ldapsearch has a lot of
arguments to type to get a simple result. Besides, it asks for a
password. ;-

So, now that I know what my problem is/was I am able
to move forward. The only issue I have now is that I have 9000 users
that I want to be able to log onto multiple domains. By having
to have the SID match the domain It presents a problem...

I only want one password database to maintain... I guess I could get
clever with LDAP replication and have multiple LDAP's... This is a less
than Ideal solution. At this time I have large smbpasswd files that I
would like to not use. I guess my ideal solution would look like:

/--- Domain A
   /
  LDAP ---+
   \
\--- Domain B

Since we use a web based password changer, I could have a separate
LDAP per Domain. I guess, in my ideal world I would have an LDAP
with multiple sambaSID's, each samba server would just pick the one
out of the LDAP that was appropriate to that Domain. I realize
that the current schema does not allow for this and that samba is not set
up to handle it either. Any ides on how to accomplish something similar
  without that ability.

ahh - the million dollar question.

Don't you want users to be able to change their password using the
typical Windows change password tool instead of requiring them to change
it via http? What about UserMgr.exe?

No. We are forcing all users to do password changes inside the campus
portal. This was a decision made to simplify support and drive people into
using the portal. Good or bad, it was the decision made.

Anyway, if your LDAP skills are strong enough (I suspect not), you can
use replication to have each PDC run the master of the primary Domain it
is serving up and become a slave on the domains that it is not. Together
with winbindd, this should prove to be the most flexible - of course you
must set up 'trusts' between the various domains.

LDAP itself is a cake walk. The hard part is finding the best way to support
what we have, with all the limitations that comes along with what we have.
I'll admit this is the first time integrating it with Samba. I want to
seemlessly change everything from using smbpaswd files (historical, we used
them before there was anything else) to LDAP and to simplify our backend. If
it is not seemless, I have unhappy users.

LDAP is the tiger that you apparently don't want to ride but I have
found it to be quite predictable.

Actually I am pushing LDAP, I have been using it in some form for about 4
years. Thanks for the advice, though you could lose the condescending tone.

[Samba] smbmount, winbind and autofs

2004-04-02 Thread Dan Am
Hi all,
trying to automount the homedir on login on a
Linux client to a Win PDC (or Lin PDC for that matter)
This semms like a bright a idea, because it enables me to replace any
Win workstation with a Lin Workstation, but:

1. The password. Unable to give the password to autofs.

.but even so, if I cleartext the password into the autofsmap:

2. The share gets mounted by root, which means
USER cannot acces his own homedir :-(

So...I cannot use autofs ? Alternatives ? Workarounds ? Anybody ?
I think it would be a useful thing, if it worked.

[Samba] why xcopy /d doesn't work

Hi Germano,

I just found your post regarding Samba and xcopy /d switch at

This is also driving me mad. I was interested to know if you ever found a
way around this problem ? It only seems to be a problem for me with 2000
and XP workstation. 98 works fine.

[Samba] password ynchronisation

2004-04-02 Thread Simon Oliver
A few questions on the ldap passwd sync directive:

http://www.unav.es/cti/ldap-smb/smb-ldap-3-howto.html#passwd_sync

ldap passwd sync = yes|no|only

This option is used to define whether or not Samba should sync the LDAP
password with the NT and LM hashes for normal accounts...

(a) yes - Try to update the LDAP, NT and LM passwords and update the
pwdLastSet time,
(b) no - Do it like before, only update NT and LM passwords and update the
pwdLastSet time,
(c) only - Only update the LDAP password and let the LDAP server doing the
rest.

Now, assuming my samba box is a PDC (to mixed 98, NT, 2K, XP) running in
LDAP mode and I'm using pam_ldap or pam_krb5 for unix authentication...

1. How does option (c) work - what is the effective difference between (c)
and (a) - how does the LDAP server do the rest - what is the rest?

2. If LDAP is using KERBEROS authentication will the kerberos password get
updated when the user changes her SAMBA password.

3. What if a unix user changes their password via passwd on the console -
will both the SAMBA and KERBEROS passwords get updates?

Thanks

[Samba] Logon scripts

2004-04-02 Thread Kent L. Nasveschuk
Hello Urs,

I've been experimenting with RunAsP.exe to do exactly what you are
suggesting.

By using kixtart script processor you can fork part of your clients that
login (2000/XP) to runasp.exe. This can switch user context to an
administrator, run a program, then return to the user's context. The
only drawback is that they charge $ per client machine. The passwords
are kept in an encrypted form in a file that can be launched from the
netlogon directory.

I've evaluated it enough that to determine that I can't do without it.
I've tested it for automating Norton AV virus definition updates from
login scripts as well as running older programs that write to priveleged
directories, but there are many thing it can be used for. Nobody has
written a free version to my knowledge, would be a great project.

Good luck

Re: [Samba] why xcopy /d doesn't work

2004-04-02 Thread sgtphou
Curious. I wonder if this is related to problems me and others have been having
when trying to keep linux / windows shares in sync using rsync? In short, we
would try to sync up, and some files that weren't modified would get re-sent,
or even deleted, even when they still existed. The next pass, the deleted files
would get re-sent, and a totally different set of files would be deleted even
though the exist, repeat.

We have not found a resolution, and aren't sure if it's samba, rsync, or both.
Also using samba 3.

2004-04-02 Thread Ronald RiemVis
Hello all,

I am using MSDOS client together with Samba version 3.020 running

I can write fromout this client with 1 Mbyte/min as maximum speed
using GHOST.
The CPU load from the freebsd server is nearly zero.
When using Windows as system i can copy with a speed of 150Mbyte
/min to the same Samba server.
What must i check or change to get approx. the same speed when
using the DOS client.

[Samba] Moving to a New Domain

2004-04-02 Thread Klinger, John (N-CSC)
Can someone point me to information on how Samba handles SID History when using
security=ads and changing domains? I've done some prototyping in transferring the
idmaps from old to new SIDs when using an ldap backend, but would like to see a
recommended practice if one exists. I'm especially interested in if and how ACLs on
a global share would transfer with the domain change.

BTW: If the LDAP backend has to contain multiple SIDs (the SID history) pointing to
the same uid/gid, this can cause a winbindd crash (Bug #997). So, again, any personal
experience or document references would be appreciated.

Tons of Thanks,
john

RE: [Samba] samba and windows

2004-04-02 Thread Jason Balicki
[snip]
disadvantage:
MS is easier to administrate

I take issue with this point. While I agree that someone
without a *nix background would find Samba difficult, it's
no more difficult than learning to properly administer a
Windows server. Even though Windows Server 2003 is built
around a GUI paradigm, it's quite difficult to troubleshoot
and fix problems without a good, solid, working understanding
of the underlying OS -- and you don't get that by osmosis.
By that I mean, just because someone may have been using Windows
for a long time, the ability to administer it doesn't follow.

It's hard work to properly administer any server, and I would
even go so far as to say it's easier to wrongly administer
a Windows server, due to the apparent ease of use factor.

Samba's simple INI-like directive structure is easy to understand:
parameter=value. Granted there are lots and lots of parameters
and values and combinations thereof, but it's reasonably well
documented.

Back to answering the original posters question: there ARE
a few disadvantages to a Samba infrastructure, though I have
to say many of them are not the fault of Samba.

One minus: .Net. I run a network for a small Mortgage company,
and the software we use to run that company is converting to a
.Net infrastructure. Currently, I don't have any Windows servers,
so if we decide to run that software we'll have to purchase a
lot of Microsoft servers (AD controller, SQL server, etc)
Granted, I could shoehorn in a Samba server as a file and print
server, but, really, what's another $600 or so for another server
license when we're purchasing that much?
Is it worth the headache of getting winbind et. al. up and running?
To each his own, of course, but keep in mind that many, many software
development houses have bought into the .Net mindset and will be
spewing out software that requires this infrastructure.

Two minus: Samba as it exists does not emulate any existing version
of Windows server -- it implements the CIFS protocol. This is
a small but important distinction. You may have some small
bits of weirdness in some applications. For example:
We have a document imaging program that scans into a database.
The developer recently added the ability to import PDF files
into the database as well (we receive house appraisals in PDF
format, previously we had to print the appraisals and then
scan them in) The problem was that the developer didn't
bother to sort the list of files in the import dialog, so a user
had to search from a list of thousands of PDFs for one particular
PDF. The issue was that when filenames are returned across a
network from an NTFS based Windows server they are in alphabetical
order. Not so with Samba (or Windows 9x for that matter.) The
developer didn't realize this, so didn't sort the files. This
was a huge issue with us (especially when the developer --
at first -- refused to sort the files.)

Three minus: the Samba developers are stark-raving mad. Complete
nutcases. Network sniffing (much like glue sniffing) will do
this to you over time. I don't expect them to be able to continue
to do their thing as the years go on. Why, I hear some of them
mumble about the army of advancing aardvarks while they
chew on their keyboards. I want April Fools to last all month.

[Samba] Samba-Howto-Collection Question on page 373

2004-04-02 Thread Brian Shea (Qortek)
My question is aimed at the configuration of roaming profiles and storing
them on the network for faster access.

On Page 373 referring to table 24.3 the following paragraphs talk about the
default Registry key, then notes that if you change the key to
\\%LOGONSERVER%\\%USERNAME%\Default Folders this will store all the default
folders on the server in there home directory. (NOTE: that each user has a
correct home directory shared as \\DOMAIN\\USERNAME\)

My question is, do I only change the default parameter to move all the
directories, or do I have to change all the keys in that portion of the
Registry hive?

RE: [Samba] GROUPMAP data in LDAP?

Thanks for your reply.

Ah, the whole reason I'm using LDAP passdb backend for AD member servers is because
winbind won't work correctly in large AD domains when running on Solaris systems.
The idmap settings in my smb.conf are actually redundent, I have tried commenting
them out but this makes no difference to my problem.

Does anyone on the technical list have any comments on this, can future versions
of Samba be modified to work with this type of configuration?

thanks Andy.

[Samba] strange entries in /var/log/samba.%m

Hi,

Please could someone explain this to me. I have a very basic setup with

machines. I've just looked into var/log/samba.mike (that's me) and it

[2004/03/26 10:23:10, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(252)
mike (172.16.15.52) couldn't find service mik

I'm mapped to the share mike OK and not having any problems, just wondered
what this log entry means. I've looked in other user's logs too and they
are also _not_ having problems but show similar entries - each entry just
seems to be missing the last character off the share they are accessing.

Confused (as usual) !:-)

TIA

Mike

[Samba] automatic convertion Unix to Dos files.txt

2004-04-02 Thread Souza, Clovis
  Dear managers,
I'm looking for a way for automatic unix2dos conversion of our
 SAMBA shared Solaris 8.0 files.txt,
and I don't know where mail list to ask for.
I already use the unix2dos versions of NT/W2K and Solaris 8.0 but
it needs manual command unix2dos to be issued.

[Samba] Problem between Samba and Windows XP

2004-04-02 Thread Cleiton L. Siqueira
Hi people,

I've had trouble to make work samba server 2.2.8 of freebsd ports, set to
act as a PDC, using Windows XP.
I've already done many things and I haven't had success.
I've inserted trusted machines in passwd and smbpasswd files.

The settings are below:

[global]
server string = Servidor Samba
domain logons = yes
security = user
workgroup = SERVIDOR
os level = 20
admin users = root
preferred master = yes
domain master = yes
local master = yes
logon script = %U.bat
logon home = \\adm\perfis\%U
logon path = \\adm\perfis\%U
logon drive = no
encrypt passwords = yes
hosts allow = 10.0.1. 127.
interfaces = 10.0.1.2/32
log level = 3
log file = /var/log/samba/%U.log
max log size = 50
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8576 SO_SNDBUF=8576
nt pipe support = yes
nt smb support = yes
nt status support = yes

I've set Windows XP to accept domain server. I've used admin user (root)
which has rigths to do it.
It's work fine.

The problem occurs when I try to log in Windows XP. Windows XP tell me that
user doesn't exist or domain server is inoperante.

Could you please help me about it?

Thanks in advance.

[Samba] Re: samba oplocks ...

2004-04-02 Thread Jeff umbach
What exactly are you trying to configure locking for? Are you running a
network where the same files may be accessed at the same time?

Samba should have at least regular and level2 oplocks on be default. I
don't believe kernel oplocks are on be default but they aren't needed unless
you're sharing a file that the linux system also writes to.

Keep in mind that for multi-user database stuff you do not want oplocks in
use with your database files. I use the veto oplock files option to deal
with that.

All this and more can be found by typing 'man smb.conf' at the command line.

Can SuSE print to the printers? That should be tested first.

Hello! I am a relatively new user to Samba and have run in to a snag
with printing. I have Samba set up on a SuSE 9.0 server. I had no
problems setting up shares for disk access to my Win2K boxes. I can
attach to the shares very easily. I can also see that the shares are
active from SWAT. The problem I have is with printing. I can get to the
printer over the lan and even see the que update when I print directly
from the server, so I know I have the que set up correctly. The problem
is, when I try to print from the Windows boxes, the packets get to the
server, but no pages are printed.
If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it!

 Thanks!

Re: [Samba] why xcopy /d doesn't work

2004-04-02 Thread Malcolm Baldridge
Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Curious. I wonder if this is related to problems me and others have been
having when trying to keep linux / windows shares in sync using rsync?

Hrm... I assume this isn't a dos filetime resolution time sort of issue?

There are also differences in date semantics between DOS/Windows and POSIX.
A careful perusal of the smb.conf documentation will clarify the issues
involved.

[Samba] USRMGR.EXE, passwd sync and failed user addition

2004-04-02 Thread Joseph Doran
Hi,

Sorry if I am stating the obvious, but I could not find any info anywhere
about this issue.

Just a quick email to alert people to the fact that some posts that I have
been scouring over suggest that certain individuals are unable to add
users through usrmgr.exe. I have spent the last 4~5 hours hunting down
this very problem looking at permissions, groups and so on. So I thought I
would pass the info on.

It would appear the problem can arise due to the passwd chat (when called
as root). I am running Redhat 9.0 and the usual passwd chat is slightly
different to version 7.1 from which I took the smb.conf over from. Keyword
(UNIX) seems to have been dropped.

I did read somewhere that some versions of unix/linux display ReType
instead of Retype, although I cant confirm this.

7.0 expects
*Changing*password*for*user*%u.\n*New*UNIX*password* %n\n
*Retype*new*UNIX*password* %n\n
*passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully*

7.1 expects
*Changing*password*for*user*%u.\n*New*UNIX*password* %n\n
*Retype*new*UNIX*password* %n\n
*passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully*

whereas

7.2 expects
*Changing*password*for*user*%u.\n*New*password* %n\n *Retype*new*password*
%n\n *passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully*

and

9.x expects
*Changing*password*for*user*%u.\n*New*password* %n\n *Retype*new*password*
%n\n *passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully*

Dont have access to a version 8.0 box.

Hopefully this will save someone trawling though, passwd chat debug = yes,
and 101 level debugs :-).

To:- samba-technical list.
Would it not be possible to say add a dummy user account, change the
passwd and capture the stdout, and delete dummy account, to populate the
chat script automatically?

Best Regards
Joe.

PS: I am not on list, so reply directly if you wish to make contact.

I asked this same question on this list a while back. There is no way to interactively run
a script as a higher user, otherwise virus writers could take advantage of this (as
opposed to them currently taking advantage of stupid users and MS's stupid policy of
making users Administrators by default). The logon.bat runs as the currently logged on user.
