[Samba] PocketPC 2003 taking samba file share?
Hi All, Anybody ever succeeded in getting a samba share opened by PocketPC 2003 File Explorer? I am using a h4150 iPaq with WLAN capabilities, but haven't been able to succesfully take in any type of samba share, public nor private. I have used Pocket Hosts to make sure the samba server is known by it's hostname, but even by referencing the samba server by it's IP address directly, I get the same error message on PPC over and over again: Bad network path. Check to see if the path you typed is correct and your dial-up connection is active or your network card is properly inserted. Experiments went as far as specifying the share name in many different formats: \\node\share //node/share \\ipaddr\share //ipaddr/share All with the same result. I am pretty sure that my network card is up and running, because all of the other wireless networking stuff works without any problem. Despite many attempts to find relevant hints through google, I haven't found anything useful about this subject. Any hints will be highly appreciated. Or, if I am dropping this in the wrong place, just let me know ;-) But through all experiments I just get the feeling that I should be doing something special with a samba config file. RE: [Samba] Panic in Samba 3.0.3Pre2
I have now upgraded to 3.0.3RC1 and the panic still occurs. It would appear to happen only when I install HP print drivers though, I have installed brother and Epson drivers without any issues at all. When I ran the server on 2.2.8 for initial testing it was stable, but due to the restriction in the maximum printer name length I had to jump to version 3. I would welcome any other suggestions from anyone, before I confine myself back to my windows server for now. Re: [Samba] OpenLDAP,heimdal kerberos, sasl, wich order?
On Thu, 2004-04-15 at 21:47, Diego Julian Remolina wrote: If you want to see the order on how to compile them and get them to work then look at: http://www.math.gatech.edu/~dijuremo/ldap/ If you have a Native Windows PDC and samba is acting as a secondary then you can have kerberos authentication against the windows PDC kerberos. This is done with a cross-realm authentication trick as I was told by Gerald Carter (one of the developers of samba). Samba 3 does not support kerberos auths without having a Windows PDC with Active Directory. If you do not have a native windows pdc then you need to authenticate against the passwords stored in tdbsam or ldapsam but not on kerberos. See, this is the trick I've been talking about. Technially, Samba can use kerberos without a windows DC, but there are some silly, (and some not quite so silly) reasons why that's not an option right now. However, you can add Kerberos to your existing Samba LDAP server. That is, if you run Heimdal 0.6.1 (or better still a snapshot) you can use your sambaNTpassword as the type 23 encryption key, and have linux/unix/OSX clients use kerberos. I *think* I have fixed this for 3.0.3 - we now always try to get or make up a sid, before we report it. This also ensures we get any SID that may be present in LDAP, for example. [Samba] Samba 3.0.2a problems on Solaris 8
Tried to upgrade our Samba 2.2.8a domain controller (Solaris 8) to Samba 3.0.2a. Compiled using gcc 3.3.2, linked to libiconv-1.8, popt-1.7 and cups-1.1.20. I shut down the Samba 2.2.8a. Removed everything in var/locks. Did a make install to install 3.0.2a, then restarted Samba. My smb.conf is basically the same as 2.2.8a with domain admin group removed. When I stared 3.0.2a I got loads of errors in var/log.nmbd and var/log.smbd. Nothing appeared to be working, couldn't map drives or anything, so I had to quickly revert back to 2.2.8a. Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong? I've attached my smb.conf file. There are two sides to this problem. The first one to be solved was the server-side - we have had Squid working very well for about 20 months now. For the client side, Mozilla has an NTLMSSP implementation, but I still would like to see more projects using Samba's NTLMSSP code, simply because I think it handles more of the cases correctly (and there are a lot of them...). For 'proxy' type setups, I think it would be a very good idea if they used ntlm_auth (the --helper-protocol=ntlmssp-client-1), that way they can use Samba's code and protocol knowledge. Looks like you need to install libiconv, find the package on sunfreeware.com and ensure /usr/local/lib is added to your library search patch with crle thanks Andy. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Michael Keightley Posted At: 22 April 2004 11:04 Posted To: Samba Conversation: [Samba] Samba 3.0.2a problems on Solaris 8 Subject: [Samba] Samba 3.0.2a problems on Solaris 8 Tried to upgrade our Samba 2.2.8a domain controller (Solaris 8) to Samba 3.0.2a. [Samba] Member server with LDAP backend?
On my new samba file server I want to use security=domain, authenticating against an NT4 PDC. The file server will also server nfs requests to my UNIX clients. Current UNIX accounts exist in LDAP (objectClass=posixAccount). Current NT accounts live in NT domain. All UNIX users have an associated account in the NT domain (same username). Few NT users have UNIX accounts. I have setup nfs on the new server so the UNIX users can use the new file store already. Initially I want to allow the UNIX users access to the server from M$ Windows machines via Samba using domain security and LDAP backends - I want to avoid using sambapasswd and tdbsam. It seems to me that the UNIX LDAP objects just need the sambaSamAccount objectClass attributes filling in using the existing NT account details - which is the best tool for this job: smbpasswd pdbedit net user add net vampire Do I also need an idmap LDAP backend? Once this is up and running I want to give all the NT users access to the filestore - but I don't want them all to have UNIX access. I suppose I just give them a shell of /dev/null so that they can't login. Again, which tool is the best to create the appropriate LDAP entries? Eventually I will migrate the NT domain to 100% samba. I plan to convert the new samba server to the PDC for the domain and add a second BDC, which will have a replica LDAP service running on it. Help/advice/examples much appreciated. -- Simon Oliver -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

The bad query, server, is actually the NT box at the moment. I took a look at it, and it was originally not pointing to the WINS server. Andrew Bartlett Thanks for the link. Is it very difficult to add the Kerberos support after an LDAP Samba PDC/BDC setup has been configured and in production mode? Samba won't know the difference - but the new Heimdal KDC however will operate on exactly the same passwords! You could even do it on a read-only LDAP slave, if you don't intend to change passwords (password changes are probably best done by Samba only at this point). Andrew Bartlett Firstly, sorry about not sending my above message to the list. I guess I hit reply rather than reply-all. Thanks. I will be giving Heimdel a try. ~Dan -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Samba 3 with multiple DNS domains
Hi all, we have a windows domain running in native mode and a samba box running samba 3.0.2a and several DNS domains. I configured samba to work as a fileserver with ads support with the realm doma.big-org.COM. We have DNS-A-Records for this server (sambabox.doma.big-org.com and sambabox.doma.com) and two DNS-CNAME-Records (jobnetdev.ch.domaintra.net pointing to sambabox.doma.com and jobnetdev.doma.big-org.com pointing to sambabox.doma.big-org.com) all pointing to the same IP-Address. And a share on the samba box named jobnet. Now: \\sambabox.doma.big-org.com\jobnet works fine and authenticates the user with ads \\sambabox\jobnet works too \\sambabox.doma.com\jobnet fails with NT_STATUS_CANT_ACCESS_DOMAIN_INFO \\jobnetdev.ch.domaintra.net\jobnet fails with NT_STATUS_CANT_ACCESS_DOMAIN_INFO \\jobnetdev.doma.big-org.com\jobnet fails with NT_STATUS_CANT_ACCESS_DOMAIN_INFO We tried everything but in the latter case samba does not seem to ask kerberos at all. It seems to me, that if it asks kerberos, then it is going to work, else not. Is this a known point or is there something I can do about it at all? We can dig into it but I like first to ask if anyone knows this problem already. Re: [Samba] Joining WinXP to Samba domain
Hi Tim, I think that I changed the computer name and then had to reboot XP for it to take place before changing the domain name. Mark Hi, A few weeks ago I posted a question about joining WinXp clients to a Samba 3.02a domain, using Red Hat 9 and samba as a PDC. I manually created the machine accounts for 8 clients on the server, and got 4 clients connected with no problem. The other 4 for returned error unknown user name when changing the computer name and domain. The signseal registry entry had been modified. However if I added a machine account to samba which was the same as the clients existing computer name and just changed from workgroup to domain on the client it worked. An example may explain it a bit more clearly: WinXP original computer name is George and Workgroup is workgroup. I want to change it to computer name accounts and domain acqua. I add accounts$ user to samba, and then attempt to modify WinXP client. Goto properties of My Computer, then change computer name. Set computer name to accounts and domain to acqua. Dialog box is displayed asking for user and password, enter root and password, then an error is displayed saying user name not found. Go back to server add account George$ and retry modifying client. This time get dialog box saying Welcome to Acqua Domain. It is not really a problem now, but I am very curious to find out what would cause this - considering 4 workstations with WinXP had no problems at all, and 4 did. Thanks Tim __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! [Samba] SAMBA DEVELOPERS PLEASE READ WAS: RE: password change, domain not available
[summary: quite a few people who have installed recent MS patches and use Samba as a NT style PDC (and, it appears, are using 2.2.8a) have an issue where they cannot change their passwords from the client side. Cannot change is in quotes because even though the client reports failure, the password has in fact been changed successfully. However, you can't expect an end user to know that, nor expect them to accept a negative response for a positive.] The problem seems to be related to Windows Hotfix KB828741. Removing the hotfix through the control panel solved it for us. While this is a workaround, it is not an acceptable one. 828741 fixes vulnerabilities that affect RPC/DCOM and can allow a remote attacker to gain control of a machine. It's only a matter of time before someone writes a worm that takes advantage of this. Could some Samba developer PLEASE take time out of their very busy schedule and look into this issue? It's affecting quite a few people (if they know it or not) and needs to be addressed quickly. I've compared the security options from a working and non working XP pro machine and have not found any differences, but past that I don't know where to look. I suppose I can try exporting the entire registry and running a diff -- but I'm sure I'll still have thousands of lines to wade through after that. AFAICT, this appears to affect Samba 2.2.8a. Someone mentioned that 2.2.3a is unaffected and I haven't seen anyone complaining about 3.0.x yet. I'm sure there are many people in the same position that I'm in: 2.2.8a has been working just fine and there has been no reason to upgrade. If I have to I will, but it seems like this would be a simple client-side registry change or something similar. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say: thank you for any help at all you can give us. --J(K) -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

hi list, after 2 years samba 2.5a-ldap-pdc used from more than 1000 users without any problem i want to upgrade to samba 3.0.2a! the problem is to join to domain and automatically create the ws-account. step by step it looks like (sorry for the bad translation - i've only german version of w2k/sp3): 1) systemproperties/join domain 2) i fill in the correct username and pwd 3) a few seconds later i get an error like user could not be found 4) ok-click to this message and once again ok for joining the domain 5) after a few seconds it succeeded and everything else works well i found out that the problem is the search dn because i've the ous clients and users and this is the phenomenon: at the first try the ws-account is created on the right place - in ou=Clients - but then it will be searched in ou=Users and so user could not be found is ok, because in ou=Users isn't such a account! ok, but i you try it again the client will be searched in the right ou (ou=Clients) and then it works! for those one, who likes to read logfiles near than 5000 lines - i can send you the log! is this a known bug? for manual work it's no problem, but with automatic softwaredelivery this situation is very bad. thanks in advance for your help and sorry for my very bad english - i'm from austria ;-) greetings thomas reisenbichler -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
Re: [Samba] Samba 3.0.2a - Erroneously rejects NTLMv2 but accepts NTLM
Andrew, Could you please elaborate on your ACCESS_DENIED/viud comment? Does odd mean my answers don't make sense or does it mean that the behavior is not supposed to happen like this? (or both) Also, am I correct in assuming that your suggestion to try w/ 3.0.3rc1 means that: a) My setup looks OK and/or b) 3.0.2a has some known issues? If 3.0.2a is suspected or known to exhibit this problem, I'd be happy to plough through another source build but it's a big enough effort that I'd really like to solve the problem w/ the current production release if at all possible. As soon as I get your reply, I'll build up the test scenario. [Samba] winbind talking to backup ADS server
Hi- I've set up samba 3.02a and have it successfully authenticating against a Windows 2000 ADS Server. Everything is working great, except that samba (winbind?) won't talk to the backup ADS server when the primary ADS server goes down. I'm shutting off the primary ADS server to test this, and when I do I get the following: [EMAIL PROTECTED] /etc]# /usr/local/samba/bin/wbinfo -u Error looking up domain users getent passwd also doesn't work. When the primary ADS server is online, everything works. This seems to be a winbind problem ... when the primary is offline, all windows users can log into the domain from their PCs, and I can successfully get a kerberos ticket on my samba server machine from the secondary ADS server (/etc/krb5.conf uses DNS to lookup the kerberos server), but winbind doesn't seem to find it. I tried three different settings for password server in smb.conf: password server = PRIMARY_ADS_IP password server = PRIMARY_ADS_IP, SECONDARY_ADS_IP ... and the third was just not specifying a password server. All three give the same result: I can authenticate when the primary is up, but not when it's offline. Looking at tcpdump (though I'm not an expert), it seems like winbind is continually trying to contact the primary ADS server even after is goes away Any ideas? Where does winbind get the information about what ADS server to talk to? [Samba] Printing, cups, w2k, Runtime error
Hi! I've been trying to find a solution to a printer problem. All I found is a message posted to this list about a year ago, which describes about the same problem (the message is in the end of this mail). So, each time I try to print from windows 2000 or XP I get this error message: Microsoft Visuall C++ Runtime Llibrary Program: C:...Winword.exe Abnormal program termination I have three network printers they all have the same problem. The printers are: HPLJ4050, HPLJ4100, HPBIJ2280 I use the following process to setup the printers: 1. Install the printer to cups using KDE Control center - I've tried raw, postscript and PCL drivers, doesn't seem to make any difference, should it? 2. Restarting samba 3. In windows I go to \\server\printers = propeties for the printer 4. Install the windows PCL (5 or 6) driver using APW 5. Connect to printer All this goes just fine, but after this, if I try to see the properties or to print I get error message. I've recompiled samba and cups and googled my brains out, but haven't been able find out the problem. So, any help would be nice. BACKGROUND INFO: I'm using latest samba and latest cups. [Samba] Re: probleb with 'passwd chat' and 'passwd program'
Hi, Loc Nguyen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in his reply to Jérôme Tournier: when unix password sync = yes is used, SAMBA tries to update password in /etc/passwd which I believe you don't have the entry in it; this option is helpful when you use flat file sambapasswd I'm solving the same problem as described in original question now. After some testings It seems to be much more complicated: When I set unix password sync = no, Samba will cease to call passwd program and will change sambaLMPassword and SambaNTPassword attributes in sam database directly by ldap (I put tracing output into the scripts too) and therefore no problem with external passwd program occurs. It is not true that Samba tries update password in /etc/passwd - unix password can be stored (and it is useful) in ldap database beside Samba/NT passwords and usualy it is need to keep these passwords in sync. Problem with uncompleted external smbldap-passwd (IDEALX) script is in this script or in its interaction with Samba. Perl script is using system('stty -echo') to change terminal settings before and system('stty echo') after typing password. It can be used because communication between smbd and Perl script is done by pseudo tty and it is used because script can be called from command line. By simple look to ps axf when waiting for password change I saw that script hangs execution (*) during second stty echo (i.e. after retyping new password) and it seems to be killed by smbd after 20 sec. Thus execution is not completed and then Unix password is not set. Second implication of this is annoying long time for completion of password change in Windows (20 sec.). I had tried to replace system('stty...') in script by calling IO::Stty::stty(). It works equally as original IDEALX script when called from commandline but there is another problem when called from Samba. Exactly - my modified script do its work immediately and change all three passwords but Windows user is informed about wrongly typed password and in the samba log (debuglevel = 100 !) occurs only (!) such messages: [2004/04/22 16:49:49, 0] passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldapsam_update_sam_account(1417) ldapsam_update_sam_account: failed to modify user with uid = p01861, error: modify/delete: sambaLMPassword: no such value (Success) [2004/04/22 16:49:49, 0] smbd/chgpasswd.c:check_oem_password(832) check_oem_password: incorrect password length (-1895505390). I don't know what it mean. Does anybody have some explain of hanging stty command in script ? Does anybody offer right solution ? M. Vancl *) I'm not sure why, maybe master tty is prematurely closed by smbd after typing out the password and before script is finished. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] Auto driver download, only sometimes
Hello, I am running Samba 3.0.2 with Cups support. Recently I set this up on a new server, shut down the old Samba 2.* server, changed the name and brought up the new server as our new print server. Everyone automatically had all their drivers upgraded, even when they previously had special local drivers installed. They did not need to delete and re-double-click the printer icon on the print server. I changed the drivers for our color printers back to the vendor drivers (usinf rpcclient) as the cups drivers don't get all the colors right, they do solid colored backgrounds when white was requested, etc. The vendor drivers work fine, but users must delete the printer and recreate it. How do I tell samba to: 1) Force the download the next time someone tries to use the driver. This must be possible as a cupsaddsmb triggers this. 2) Prevent the download the next time someone tries to use the driver. Once I get some special, local driver installed, I may want to not have it get overwritten. Also, some people can get properties on a printer and change the driver selection, change Printing Defaults... via the Advanced tab, others cannot. It seems to have nothing to do with whether one is logged in as administrator vs. has administrator privaleges, etc. It seems to be random. I can do it logged in as administrator. I have no user login. The guy across the hall can do it as himself (he has admin rights) or as administrator. The guy down the hall can't do it as himself (he has admin rights). What is the magic? The big problem is that they can't change the banner page as their default and it seems to have come up randomly different from what is configured on the server for all the cups-drivered printers. (If I just crossed the line to cups question land, just let me know and I ask over there). BTW: The system is an RHEL ES 3.1 system. [Samba] Tested: W2000 Hotfix (Q818528) with Terminal Server and Samba
I tested the Windows 2000 hotfix from Q818528 with Terminal Server and Samba. The hotfix adds the MultiUserEnabled registry parm which, when set to 1, essentially restores the MultipleUsersOnConnection behavior from NT4. With MultiUserEnabled on the Windows 2000 Terminal Server, Windows will start a new TCP session for each Terminal Server user, and Samba will start a new smbd for each TS user that mounts 1 or more Samba shares. It works as expected. The hotfix does not install on Windows 2003 Servers, though. Don't know about the plans for a 2003 hotfix. [Samba] printing without server side drivers
Running RH9, CUPS 1.1.17, hpijs 1.3 It is my understanding that the server Samba is running on doesn't need drivers for the printer it is sharing. However, the drivers I do have installed on the server don't work quite right (chop off the top), and I see now that anything printed through Samba also has its top chopped off. Which would indicate to me that it is infact using the CUPS drivers. So, I'd assume that Samba was running Windows client output through CUPS. Am I correct in this assumption? Is there something I can configure differently so the driver on CUPS isn't used? I've tried just using BSD-Style printing commands (with no luck), in addition to use CUPS with smb.conf, neither have worked. I took a look at (but haven't yet tried) setting up Windows clients so they think the printer is local, however I'm not sure I can use this as a permanent solution as I need a job status manager for all the (soon to be) users of this system.. Any help on this would be appreciated. [Samba] Samba + cups + load balancing
Hello, I'am playing with samba and cups. Now i have 2 print servers load balanced with samba, cups, heartbeat. I use 2 computers with 2 ethernet cards by machine. networknetwork | | | | | X | eth0| eth0 Node 1Crossover linkNode 2 eth1 eth1 when all is ok, on node 2 public interface eth0 is down and up on node 1. if node 1 fail, hearbeat shut down public interface on node 1 and activate eth0 on node2. Virtual IP address moves on node 2. Samba is listening only on private interfaces (eth1) on node 1 2. We are connected with network and DC (win2k) with a nated connection. The two samba servers are identical: we copy all tbd files from node1 to node 2. All seems to work for now... RE: [Samba] You do not have permission to change your password
Just an update. After reading others posts, I uninstalled Microsoft Cumulative Update MS04-012 (KB828741). Sure enough this fixed the problem. Hope Samba folks can correct this in Samba 3.0.3 so we don't have to uninstall this update on all computers. Brandon -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brandon Turner Sent: Sunday, April 18, 2004 2:09 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Samba] You do not have permission to change your password We recently migrated from WindowsNT to Samba 3.0.2a. After about two months, we have started to notice a weird problem. As user's passwords expire, they are prompted to change them. When they attempt to do so from Windows, they get a message saying You do not have permission to change your password. However, the password IS changed. Both the Samba and LDAP Linux passwords are changed correctly, as well as the samba attributes (such as sambaPasswordLastSet, etc.) Sometimes we notice the following entry in our Samba logs: [2004/04/17 18:13:26, 0] smbd/chgpasswd.c:check_oem_password(832) check_oem_password: incorrect password length (-800397408). However sometimes this message does not appear. When we first installed Samba, we forced users to change their passwords from Windows and this worked fine. However, now 2 months later as their passwords are beginning to expire, this error is occurring for ALL users. The password is ALWAYS changed however, so I am totally lost as to what is going on. We have not changed any settings (that we know of) since when password changing was working and when it stopped. I've seen a lot of posts in the past about the error message we are receiving, however nothing substantial. The password DOES change, so if the packet is being decrypted wrong (the common error of several posts) then how does Samba know what the new password is. If you have any idea what is going on, please help. If 3.0.2a is suspected or known to exhibit this problem, I'd be happy to plough through another source build but it's a big enough effort that I'd really like to solve the problem w/ the current production release if at all possible. As soon as I get your reply, I'll build up the test scenario. 3.0.3rc1 includes fixes for NTLMv2 issues regarding the correct uppercassing semantics required for NTLMv2. [Samba] Windows XP changes IP of Samba to outside port!
I checked through the archives and I didn't see this one. This has been driving me absolutely crazy for months now and I finally tumbled to what was going on. I get hesitations of up to 2 minutes from some of our XP machines when printing to a printer on the Samba server. My first suspicion was that it was some kind of name resolving issue. I tried using the domain name of the Samba server (we have an 'inside' domain set up) and that fixed some of the XP boxes. Yesterday, I got a complaint from a person who was getting the 2 minute delay before printing and I ran over to his office and put in the DNS name of the inside interface (the LAN side) of the Samba server in the Add Printer thingy. Still got a 2 minute delay and Access Denied stuff. OK..I said...I'll short this out...I hate to do it, but I'll use the IP address of the Samba server and it won't have to look up anything. Still 2 minute delay before printing! Then I noticed that XP had changed the ip address shown in the Printers and Faxes icons. Huh? That's the OUTSIDE interface of the Samba server. That server is a gateway also and has two interfaces, one on the internet, one on the LAN. XP was changing the IP I gave it (the inside IP ) and replacing it with the outside IP! Then it hit me that it was getting access denied because it was trying to access port 138 through the firewall! Of course, port 138 is blocked to the outside world. I noticed that there had been quite a number of IP packets bouncing off the firewall rule that blocked 138. H... So, I added a rule that says that packets emanating from our outside IPs (inside addresses would be NAT'd to the outside IPs) can be sent to port 138 on the Samba box and Voila! Instant printing! The packets are apparently going to the Samba server, being NAT'd to the outside interface and now they can come back in on port 138 and it works. Does anyone know what in the world is going on with this? Why would XP change the IP. By that I mean you say \\192.168.0.1\printername when you set up the printer and you look at the icon and it says \\The_Outside_IP\printername. RE: [Samba] You do not have permission to change your password
Nope, even with 3.0.3rc1 it still did the error. Passwords were changed correctly just like before. I did notice once that it would let me log in with either my original password, or the password I just changed to. This stopped after rebooting the Windows client, but still weird. I also get the DOMAIN not available message sometimes, or the You don't have permission others.
