This started happening to me as of 3.0.4, and I never found a solution.
Now I'm trying to mount via cifs, but getting "missing or invalid
username" even though I'm using the correct credentials file. :(
The last good version of Samba that worked for me was 3.0.2a.

To solve this i return back to 3.0.2a-1, and everything working fine again.
Is it bug or not ?

Anyone have experience regarding to upgrade 3.0.5-2 ?

[Samba] Connection Problems from Windows 2000 Server to a SAMBA Share

2004-07-25 Thread Ariyur Rangarajan
Dear All,

I am experiencing a problem accessing a SAMBA share from a Windows 2000 SP4 server.
We have a Service on the Windows 2000 Server, which processes a number of database
queries and prepares a file. It then copies this file to a SAMBA share using the UNC
convention (\\servername\foldername\filename). The user who runs this service belongs
to a domain - domain1 while the SAMBA share on the unix machine is in a different
domain. However the domain1\username has full access rights to the SAMBA shares. For
some unknown reason, on some days the jobs work fine and the files are copied while on
some other days every single job to copy the files fails. We have checked the SAMBA
setup and all is OK.

Are there any known problems which cause this connection/disconection problem ?

Please help

Cheers
Ranga

If this is set to 0, then it the 'must change at first logon' is

[Samba] Samba3+samba-vscan+clamav = A big headache.

2004-07-25 Thread Chris E
I just installed samba3+samba-vscan via ports on a FreeBSD 4.x system.
Samba is running just fine and thanks to the help of webmin it was
easily configured. Today I finally was able to get windows shares to be
mounted on my FreeBSD server. So naturally I want to run av scans on it.
I set it up to mount the entire C drive and to scan it using clamav
which is also installed from ports. I recompiled Samba3 with support for
VFS using the arguement

make WITH_VFS=yes install clean

which I'm not sure if worked or not but seems to have not errored and
comipiled fine. Then I setup my smb.conf with the following

[global]
vfs object = /usr/local/lib/samba/vscan-clamav.so
vfs options = config-file =
/usr/local/etc/samba-vscan/vscan-clamav.conf

Then I restarted Samba and obtained the following errors in my messages

More discoveries here:

I have folder 'test' with 4k folders named from 0001 to 4096 (seq -w 4096
fed to mkdir). If i select folder 'test' and delete it, the 'preparing to
delete' stage takes just seconds and the delete itself takes about 160s,
which is about right.

BUT if i open folder 'test', select all of the directories there and try to
delete them, it takes almost half an hour to get the conformation dialog
box, while smbd process is doing what above strace shows and eating all the
available cpu.

Any ideas why?

[Samba] can't map drive from certain xp pro computers

2004-07-25 Thread Jason
I am having trouble mapping a drive on my samba server from 3 of my Windows XP
Professional computers. When I attempt to map the drive, whether through the "map
network drive" using a specified password or "net use" with a specified password, my
password is rejected.

I am using: "encrypt passwords = no" in smb.conf to authenticate using the unix passwd
file. I have run the WinXP_PlainPassword.reg script on the XP Pro workstation and
verified that "Send unencrypted passwords to third party servers" is enabled in local
security settings.

Additionally, I have 2 other XP pro, 5 XP Home, 10 Windows 98, and 1 windows 2000
computers that can map the drive without any problems.

I would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. In hindsight maybe I should not have
asked this question on the list. I have every intention of
creating a domain primarily to achieve single sign on. But
computer accounts and domain logons are not needed to take
advantage of single sign on.

The question I was really asking was under Samba what other
*important* benefits could I also take advantage of if I
joined each PC to the domain and used domain logons for the
users.

In this regard here's what I see:
1 - Any user can log on from any PC.
2 - Computer/Group/User policies.
3 - Roaming profiles.

These capabilites are likely of limited value for *my*
environment - lots of professionals who have their own PCs
(not shared), and desire and can handle restriction free use
of the PCs. Besides that, as a senior manager at the
company I can be *very* persuasive in getting users to treat
their PC's responsibly. Some of the best control solutions
involve management setting the right tone and environment.

Re: [Samba] Windows/Linux directory share with differnt security

2004-07-25 Thread rruegner
Hi,
samba will first honor the linux
permissions to any file or folder,
so first make clear that the wanted permission are able
to your native nix systems.
If this is ok you can take samba to control
permissions to this share for win clients
like i e.
readlist = @readers
writelist = @writers, Admin
read the samba doku about this,
there is also the chance to make use of group mapping
and acl , which might be more complicated to setup
reading man smb.conf will give you all anwers you need

"NTFS" for being best compatibel unless you have special reason to

[Samba] reg2adm , solution for creating adm ( policy editor files ) out of reg files / deploing ntp servers ip to win domain clients

2004-07-25 Thread rruegner
Hi Samabatistas,
as i had to employ my ntp services to all windows system i found a tool
call reg2adm , which was quite simple to make a adm file outta regfile
for my NTConfig.POL to deploy the value ( ip ) from my ntp server
to all win clients in my samba domain,
It is very usefull to implement other stuff like controlling default
loginscreensaver and time for all users ( which was a wish from my
customer ),
it should be quite helpfull to control nearly every part of the registry
of win machine , user, or groups related client via adm file with orktools.
So here is the tool ( i think some of you know it allready )

2004-07-25 Thread Rafael Paris
Hi everyone...

Since I'm running samba I haven't been able to implement pdbedit policies
like password expiration time, lockout attempts, etc...
I'm running samba-3.0.5 in RedHat enterprise 3
I read pdbedit manual
I also tried to force users to change their password at first logon running
this command:
pdbedit -P "user must logon to change password" -C 1

I set the account to last a week for testing purposes only and the minimum
password age for 3 days.

This is the account information for a user.

[Samba] which fstype to use!

2004-07-25 Thread henrique paiva

Hi,
i have a clipper 5.3 application running over samba 3.0.2a in mandrake10
system. But, i don't know which kind of files system works better in
clipper applications.
I was using fat partion, with "fstype = fat" in my smb.conf and samba
2.2. Then i changed my server a installed mandrake10.
Right now i'm using reiserfs with "fstype = samba" in smb.conf.
So, is this a good idea for filesystem choice?
Which are your files system in clipper/foxpro application ?
thanx

[Samba] Windows/Linux directory share with differnt security

2004-07-25 Thread Haim Kalderon
Hello group,

I have Windows 2000 workstations and Linux 9 that runs applications

 and file servers.

Samba is running and I see all shares on the Linux box.

What I need to do is give a certain directory a share as follows:

All users will be able to see, read and browse this directory.

Only an administrator user will be able to write/delete this
directory.

This is how the share in the smb.conf looks like:

  [mfg]

  comment = mfgpro file server

  path = /mfg

  readonly = yes

  public = yes

 Thanks for your help,

 HaimK

No misuse of the Samba mailing list was intended. I have
spent some time reading the Samba3 Howto and Samba3 By
Example books. These are excellent books which have
answered most of my configuration questions. With some help
I have setup and have running LDAP/PDC and LDAP/BDC test
boxes.

I have had difficulty understanding the value of some of the
tools available such as computer accounts (domain logons)
and kerberos for a small network such as mine (75 users on
Netware). I figure that I should not implement anything for
which I can not plainly understand the benefit and explain
the benefit to my fellow managers at the small company that
I work.

Again, no misuse of the list was intended. I am only trying
to determine the best way to implement Samba.
