[Samba] Prolonged transfers turn hard drive into read-only.

2006-05-25 Thread Yung Hwa Kwon

Good day,

I'm hoping someone can provide me with some direction to get a samba
(possibly) issue fixed.

After large/long transfers, usually couple hundred megs +, the disc
I'm transferring the files turns into a read-only drive. I have to
unmount and remount the drive for it to be writable again. I'm not a
linux expert so I'm sure I didn't setup everything optimally. The
drive it writes to is mdadm created RAID 1, so that may be a problem
also, but I'd like to rule out samba first.

I'm running Fedora Core 5 (2.6.16-1.2096_FC5). Using mdadm to run
RAID 1 over 2 250 gigs drives. Transfers were between a Mac OS X box
and a Linux box, using Apple's SMB/CIFS. I'm not sure if this occurs
during a Windows to Linux transfer, but my primary connections will
be between Mac to Linux.

Any help or direction to resource would be awesome.

Thanks,
Alex

[Samba] Samba 3.0.23pre1 with windows vista

2006-05-25 Thread ahmed.feroz

Hi

We are using samba "samba-3.0.23pre1" when we try to connect " Windows
Vista, Beta 2, Version 6,Build 5308 " we are getting the following error

Doing spnego session setup (blob length=80)

SPNEGO login failed: Unexpected information received

lang_tdb_init: /usr/local/samba3023pre1/lib/en_US.UTF-8.msg: No such
file or directory

session setup failed: SUCCESS - 0.

The network trace and logs are attached with this mail. We tried
bypassing spnego and do NT style session setup in samba 3.0.23pre1, it
still failing. We tried the same with samba 2 it is working fine. Can
some one help us in solving this issue

Thanks and Regards

Re: [Samba] copy of smbpasswd

2006-05-25 Thread Tom Haerens
Hi Chami,

I solved my problem too!

We use a cgi script (Changepassword) to allow user to change their
passwords.

I found this in the Samba mailing list in an old topic:

"
[Samba] Re: /etc/samba/smbpasswd keeps changing - pulling my hair out

Apparently it has nothing to do with Samba, but with the
CGI script ChangePassword (http://changepassword.sourceforge.net) which
used the string "LTC" instead of "LCT" in smbpasswd entries. I edited the
affected smbpasswd entries and changed LTC to LCT, and now it works"

It seems Samba 2.2.5 doesn't mind that, Samba 3.0.2 does.

Cheers,
Tom

[Samba] Adding machines and machine based logins

2006-05-25 Thread Julian Pilfold-Bagwell
Hi All,

I am hoping to set up machine based logins on our Samba server (3.0.21c/RedHat
EL4). I have the following lines in the global section to my smb.conf:

[global]
add group script = /usr/sbin/groupadd %g
delete group script = /usr/sbin/groupdel %g
add user to group script = /usr/sbin/usermod -G %g %u
passdb backend = tdbsam:/etc/samba/passdb.tdb
add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -m %u
add machine script = /usr/sbin/useradd -s /bin/false -d /dev/null -g \
machines %u

and use tdbsam as the password backend.

I've only just noticed though that any machine accounts that have been created
during the first attachment to the domain in Windows are not coming out in
the machines group. These machines have a primary group that is the same as
the machine name and I don't want to change them in case it has an adverse
effect.

So, the question here is that if i change the primary group of the machines
from say machine1$ to machines will that affect anything when I change the
login scripts e.g. from loginscript.bat to login.%m and will deleting the
existing primary group of a machine affect the info stored in tdbsam.

Also, any ideas why

add machine script = /usr/sbin/useradd -s /bin/false -d /dev/null -g \
machines %u

is not setting the machines group to machines?

Thanks

Jools

I think you may need to check the rid you have used for the Domain
Admins group. According to
http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/groupmapping.html
this is one of the well known rids which must be maintained for correct
functioning of the NT groups systems. You have a rid of 7033 and I think
it should be 512.

Re: [Samba] Domain Admins

2006-05-25 Thread neil

Yes! That was it. Thanks a lot.

But now I'm curious. So if I wanted to map my unix "users" group to
"Domain Users", what rid would I use, or does it matter?

I think it does matter, if you check out the samba documentation you
will see that Domain Users has the well known rid of 513 so your net
command would be something like:

net groupmap modify unixgroup=users type=domain ntgroup="Domain Users"

Obviously you need to replace "users" with the name of your local users
group if it is different.

If you have to create the nt group from scratch you don't need to
specify a rid unless you want to but I've found that setting the group
type to domain seems to make setting group privileges on windows
workstations work correctly.

This is wrong sorry. Windows groups are support in smb.conf if
you are running winbindd. Winbindd exports "MAINT\nkassis"
as a Unix group via NSS.

valid users = +MAINT\nkassis, +MAINT\aburns

Should work fine. If it is not, then please follow
the docs for troubleshooting winbindd and let me know what fails.

This is more of a packaging issue than anything else. For example,
SuSE package libsmbclient as a separate RPM.

Yeah, I have that in my conf. Actually, I got it working earlier, but I
had to tell samba to use my master LDAP server to do it - I was hoping I
could make samba read off of the local slave server so if the connection
to the master was severed, domain logins would still be functional. I'll
tool around with it some more tomorrow and see if I can make it work the

[Samba] Samba and SSHFS

2006-05-25 Thread Benoit Gauthier
(2006.05.25, 08:47)

Months ago, I created mounts from a Linux computer (Computer1,
hereafter) to other Linux computer using NFS, and I used Samba to
"see" these mounts from Windows computers on the local network of
Computer1. It worked fine.

I would now like to change the Linux-to-Linux mounts from NFS to
sshfs. I had no difficulty creating mounts from Computer1 to the
various outside computers using sshfs. However, Windows computers
can't see these mounts now!

Is Samba able to relay sshfs mounts the same way it relays NFS mounts?

Is a tweak required in the Samba installation?

[Samba] AIX 5.3 Samba member server to an NT domain

2006-05-25 Thread Willemse, Menno
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm trying to get AIX to authenticate users off another Samba server (with
an eye to doing the same off a Windows server at some point, just to be
flexible). I have been using the binary distribution of Samba 3.0.22 to do
this. While I have been able to get users to log in by using the WINBIND
authentication method, they still cannot change their password or use FTP. I
haven't been able to find the PAM module in the binary distribution.

So now I'm trying to compile Samba from source using the GCC 3.3.2-5
compiler from the Linux Toolbox CD. This is not going very well. The
configure script warns that aio.h, tcp.h and ldap.h cannot be compiled,
don't exist or both. These files do exist, though they may not be where
Configure expects them. So far, despite much trying, I've not been able to

So what do I have to do to make Samba's ./configure happy on a
freshly-installed AIX 5.3 system?

Kind regards,
  Menno Willemse

No. UNIX access knows nothing about DENY modes / SHARE modes.
UNIX access should *always* use DENY_NONE (which doesn't restrict
any other opens).

Depends on the app. Some apps use deny mode, some use byte range
locks.

[Samba] Debugging Password information

2006-05-25 Thread Jan Luehr
Hello,

I've some trouble authenticating users via winbind and pam/nsswitch on our
DMS. (Debian 3.0.22 Debian Sarge - PDC is SuSE 9.0 with Samba 3.0.14a)

If I try to login on my DMS (with ssh for instance) it fails and the PDC logs:

check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [jan] -> [jan] FAILED with
error NT_STATUS_WRONG_PASSWORD

But I know, that typed the right password and if I run smblient -L pdc -U jan,
I'm able to authenticate myself without any problem.

What may be wrong here?

There is no samba 2.4.
If you want to use roaming profiles please refere to

Please note that the Samba 2 series is considered obsolete and no longer
supported. The documentation for Samba 3 should be roughly similar. Be
aware that there are many pitfalls when using roaming profiles:
workstations should be very similar if not identical in setup and
software; Outlook Express kills roaming profiles; learn how to redirect
certain paths to network drives so they don't need to be sync'd with
roaming profiles; etc.

When you upgrade to Samba 3, you will find this documented in the The
Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide,
http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/

The section you will wish to read is Chapter 26 (Desktop Profile
Management).
http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/ProfileMgmt.html

Next time, PLEASE read the fine manual before posting a question with
well-documented answers. We won't do your homework for you.

Switched back to 3.0.21c. Ouch, access to shares is not granted anymore :(

The client is confused and thinks the samba server is an domain controller!:

Auf \\Deveis\public kann nicht zugegriffen werden. Sie haben eventuell
keine Berechtigung, diese Netzwerkressource zu verwenden. Wenden Sie

(Configuration informations cannot read from domain controller. No
connection to the computer or access denied.)

Are there any incompatible changes in the informations in secrets.tdb or
other tdb's?

Background:
With 3.0.21c my samba was *sometimes* a domain controller for testing
purposes. At the time 3.0.23rc1 was installed, samba was a normal
standalone server and the client was not part of a domain.
If installing the older 3.0.21c with 'Server role: ROLE_STANDALONE' the
client XP SP2 cannot access the shares anymore with the above message.

I checked this 2 times now. I have to stop samba, delete all tdb's,
start samba and restart the client - then I can access the shares
without any other changes...

Have you altered /etc/security/user for the users or for the default stanza
for SYSTEM or registry attribute values (but leave root untouched. let root
auth against the local system - always)?

Also are you using "passwd" or "passwd -R WINBIND"? If you've altered the
file above, the former should work.

Note too that there is a problem with lsuser reporting users from WINBIND
LAM in 5.3. This is an open PMR with IBM that I've got and not making much
progress. So I'm not sure if this extends further than lsuser. AIX 5.2 is
working just fine (not that it's much help :-) )

I think it does matter, if you check out the samba documentation you
will see that Domain Users has the well known rid of 513 so your net
command would be something like:

net groupmap modify unixgroup=users type=domain ntgroup="Domain Users"

Obviously you need to replace "users" with the name of your local
users group if it is different.

If you have to create the nt group from scratch you don't need to
specify a rid unless you want to but I've found that setting the group
type to domain seems to make setting group privileges on windows
workstations work correctly.

[Samba] New Samba installation

2006-05-25 Thread Simon Renshaw
Hi,

I'm using Samba 3.0.10-1.4E.6 that came with CentOS 4.3 (fresh install)
and Active Directory is running on windows 2003 SP1.

I've been following instructions of the chapter 6 of the HOWTO and would
like to validate the work I did.

First I modified smb.conf:

# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)
# Date: 2006/05/24 23:51:58

# Global parameters
[global]
workgroup = MONTREAL
realm = CASTORTECH.COM
interfaces = eth0
security = ADS
wins server = 192.168.64.20
password server = castor-srvr1
encrypt passwords = yes

[Main]
comment = Test
path = /
read only = No

I didn't modify the krb5.conf file since what was inside was OK. Then I
ran kinit [EMAIL PROTECTED] and entered the password. No
error message, it just returned to the prompt. I assume that it worked.
The first time I did get a clock skew error, but I corrected it.

Then I ran net ads join -U Administrator%password. It told me:

Using short domain name -- MONTREAL
Joined 'VLB2' to realm 'CASTORTECH.COM'

So far so good. I can see it in ADUC\Computers.

I think that I'm pretty close but I'm not sure what to do next. I want
that share to be available to anyone on their Windows machine using
their Windows login.

If I try to access \\vlb2, it asks for a username and then gives me an
access denied message is I use MONTREAL\user.

Thanks for the help,
Simon

[Samba] OSX client logging on to SAMBA PDC

2006-05-25 Thread Jason Doran

Hi,
I know that OS X can join an Active Directory Forest/Domain.
(Utilities->Directory Access->Services->Active Directory)

I have been trying to see if I can get an OS X client to
logon/join a SAMBA PDC, without success.

I always get:

Invalid domain
"An Invalid Domain and Forest combination was specified.
You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain
and forest"

Has anyone used "Directory Access" to join an OS X machine
to a SAMBA PDC rather than Active Directory. Or can I get my OS X
machine to use SAMBA when authenticating users in another way.

Thanks,
Jason Doran--

[Samba] Broken make install on 3.0.23pre1 and rc1 on HP-UX 11i

Hey guys, this one is still in the current release candidate. This is
an easy one though:

Change line 1482 in the Makefile from:
   install -m $(INSTALLPERMS) bin/$${module}.sl \

to:
   $(INSTALLCMD) -m $(INSTALLPERMS) bin/$${module}.sl \

The default "install" on my platform doesn't do the trick. This seems
to be correct everyplace else though.

All of the other compile bugs are gone, though. Thanks for the good
work! (Only thing I'd mention is the multiple /'s through most of the
install process).

[Samba] Failover LDAP?

2006-05-25 Thread Golden Butler
Okay, I've searched around on this, but can't find any examples or docs. Is
there a way to specify a second ldap server in the smb.conf, in case the
primary ldap server fails or become unreachable?
