Re: [Samba] Xp-pc's disappear in Network Neighborhood

2005-10-05 Thread Kirk Shimek
This sounds like it might be a "browser master server" war.

Anyone else agree / disagree.

In a Microsoft network using WINS, any computer starting on the network
requests (yells on the network) for who is the "Browse Master Server." If no
"Browse Master" responds within a timout period, then that computer (could be
an Server O.S. or Even Client O.S.) broadcasts that it is the "Browse Master"
and takes over / answers any other computers requesting the address for the
"Browse Master."

What we've done is via login scripts / or domain MS AD policy, is to disable (a
registry edit) all clients from becoming a "Browse Master Server." Then allow
a single server in every designated subnet (xxx.xxx.xxx.0 through
xxx.xxx.xxx.254) to be the "Browse Master."

I might be way off with this idea since I'm not a SAMBA guru. Just my 2 cents.

I have this problem. Window Xp machines show up in Network neighborhood
when they are started but after some time (20 minutes or more) they
disappear.
I can find them with search computer.
Mapped network drives still work.
They reappear if I restart the pc
They reappear if I restart Samba

Its only a small home network so I do not log in to a domain.

Whats going on?

[Samba] Samba member server not seen in network neighborhood

2003-06-12 Thread Kirk Shimek
Hello All,

Samba 2.2.5 / AIX 5.1 - NO ERRORS in any logs
Can map shares and even correct authentication / user ID mappings work from all WIN2K
domain clients using a URL or share mapping utilities.

Samba member is not populated / seen in Network Neighborhood

but "nmblookup -M -" ,querying MSBROWSE fails with "failed to find name __MSBROWSE__#01
and if I try to query with nmblookup the Samba server Name / IP address it also fails
to find either.

Any suggestions on what further steps will point to a problem and ultimately a
solution. The only thing I can think of is to disjoin the domain and rejoin with
"smbpasswd -j DOMAIN . . ."

Please help and Thank You for any help given.

[Samba] UNIX Server Not Seen In Network Nieghborhood

2003-03-25 Thread Kirk Shimek
AIX 5.1 / Samba 2.2.5 / Active Directory DNS & WINS servers

The Samba server is only a client and is not configured to be a WINS / DNS / PASSWORD
server to PCs. It passes all these requests to W2K AD.

Problem: The Samba server cannot be seen in Network Neighborhood / My Network Places
when browsing.

Debug: Samba server has a valid name / IP address entry(s) in DNS and WINS. Can get
to shares by using the "Net command(s) (i.e. net view \\sambaserver, net use x:
\\sambaserver\sharename) from the PC command line

This is a new installation - tried mirroring settings from an OLD AIX 4.3 / Samba
2.2.3 environment.

Suggestions on what to look at in problem determination and the resolution would be
appreciated.
