[Samba] Slow file trasfer; Windows to Samba

2005-01-22 Thread lovswr1
Hello. I have a simple samba share of one WinXP, one Win98SE, FC3.
All interfaces are 10/100 nics. Going from the FC3 samba box to either
Windows box or Windows to Windowws I get a sustained transfer rate of
approx 30M. Going from either Windows box to the Samba client I get max
2MB (I use iptraf to monitor speeds) normally about half that. I have
done a Google search, but all the answers seem to involve PDC's which I
am not (I think) running. Enclosed is my smb.conf, TIA.

[Samba] How to share USB printer to windows users

2004-11-25 Thread lovswr1
Hello, I have a Canon S400 USB printer. It works on my FC-3 box just
fine. Trying to get it to share with a WinXP PRO Win98SE box is the
problem. I have searched via google tried many different configs but
none of them work for me.

I can get to the point where both boxes can see the printer, but then
I get the dreaded, not allowed, password incorrect. I am using share
level access both boxes can see their own home directories correctly
(please note that I can not find my FC-3 box, called matrix1 by name...I
have to use the actual ip address) but I can not connect to the
printer.

Below is my complete /etc/samba/smb.conf file as created by SWAT. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

[Samba] Can not add users to samba 3.0

Hello, I can not seem to get smbpsswd to add any users to samba. No

response when trying to add any user

[EMAIL PROTECTED] samba]# smbpasswd -m -a gerard
Failed initialise SAM_ACCOUNT for user gerard$.
Failed to modify password entry for user gerard$

I take it this has somehting to do with PAM or shadow passwords, I
have been lookig for a about a week the best that I can find anything
related to this 'SAM_ACCOUNT' that resembles my problem, is that I need
to make sure that ./configure (I have no idea which ./confiugure it is
although I suspect that it is the one from a manual build of samba.
Since mine was installed along wtih a bunch of other stuff when I
upgraded from RH9 to fedore core 1, I have no idea where it might be)
has PAM or shadow options enabled. Any help in this matter would be
greatly appreciated.

 Please make up your mind. Do you want encrypted passwords (the default on
 Samba-3) and security=user (also the default on samba-3), or do you want
 security=share?

 Security=share means: use plain-text passwords.

Well that's the only way I have ever gotten SAMBA to work. I f I set
security to anything other than share then it will not work. Also I
thought that for WinXP the passwords have to be encrypted.

 Get rid of the 'ldap ssl' entry. It's not used in this config.

 Do not use this in the global section, it will break browsing.

 You need to allow the loopback adaptor also! ie:
 hosts allow = pc2, freebsd, matrix1, lo

 Either remove the 'guest account' entry, or else assign it to a valid
 system account. If you remove this entry samba will fall back to the
 default (nobody). In this case you must have an account in /etc/passwd
 that is called 'nobody'.

 Nope! the [homes] entry is a meta-service that makes home shares

My smb.conf is at the very bottom. Its only about 20 lines, the

looking at the smb.conf that rruegner wrote.

 Furtehrmore Mr I-know-everything I have RTFM MFT's!! I suspect that
the people who wrote it are native english speakers, but they could not
adequately convey how to bag groceries. My milage is, in Linux when I
finally find out how to do something it almost never has anything to do
with RTFM. Apparently the SAMBA peeps have completely changed the
authentication procedures because they thought it would be easier
(NOT!!) to configure. Apparently the docs, man pages etc. are just as
cryptic as all such things are.

While I'm ranting here, what in God's name is this obsession in the *nix

20 inches from each other. I could care less if the whole freaken'

 At the very least it is poor form to proffer help then berate the

 I strongly recommend that you read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf
 You can obtain it from:
 http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf

 Also, strongly suggest you use the SWAT Wizard to configure your system.

 Cheers,

 Thanks John, but I'm still getting that can not connect host error

woohooo I got SWAT working again...it was syntax. in my /etc/services i
had swat. (the period was there of course everything else was just
looking for the four letters)

user = root
log_on_failure += USERID
server = /usr/sbin/swat
port = 901
}
 /etc/pam.d/samba

auth required pam_stack.so service=system-auth
account required pam_stack.so service=system-auth
session required pam_stack.so service=system-auth
password required pam_stack.so service=system-auth
# added by me in a panic attempt to get swat working again on 7 nov 03
samba auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so nullok shadow
samba account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so

I dont't know if this is related but,my trouble started yesterday after
   I actually got vnc-server working. I just left it at default so it
   started on matrix1:1 I went to work (yes I puched a hole through
   turtlefirewall just for this) connected from my laptop at work via vnc
   to the redhat box. I did not do anything then jsut logged off. when I
   got home I had to reboot the redhat box becuase konq would not work.
   Kept complaing aobut something like the DHOCP server or other could not
   be contactacted/(connected?). Well SWAT has not worked ever since. Now
   the samba 2.7 still worked with a manual start, but this morning I did a
   rpm -U| to 3.0 now that too is not working Any help ir direction
   pointing would be greatly appreciated.

[Samba] How to add users to samba 3.0

2003-11-09 Thread lovswr1
Hello. I can not add any users to my samba 3.0 server, either via SWAT
or manually. Keep getting something about the SAM_ACCOUNT is not/will
not initialize. Did a little googling it seems this is related to
PAM. I do have PAM on my redhat 9 box but /etc/pam.conf is blank. If
someone could offer a solution or point me in the right direction it
would be greatly appreciated.
