For some reason I haven't been able to find out yet, changing gamma

Changing target_code makes a difference (just to make sure my

Hello again.

Considering I wasn't able to play with gamma values in code, I took
sample scan images with a calibration sheet for all combinations of:

target_code = { 0x, 0x1000, 0x2000, ..., 0xe000, 0xf000 } in
descending order
resolution = { 75, 100, 150, 300 }

I uploaded the images to the following URL:

http://blog.alvarezp.org/files/scan-hp3670/calibration/

The 300 dpi scans are bigger, of course, but I found different scan
results for different dpi. I wonder if this is just a cheap scanner.

Anyway, I find 0x4000 to have the best value to have no solarization but
the higher the dpi, the darker the images.

While trying to fix the images in Gimp with the Levels and Curves tool I
find that green is more sensible to low light so its 0 point should be
moved to about 15/255 to prevent the shadows to come out greenish. Also
it needs a gamma of about 1.20 to balance the midtones out.

Blue needs a gamma of about 0.80. Red is ok.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

many thanks for your work. Once I fixed an intermittent issue in
LiDE 210 head parking, I'll use all these information to improve HP3670
color scan quality.

Stef

Hi, Stef. I have made some tests using scanimage only. I, effectively,
don't get the artifacts anymore. Thanks a lot! However, you were right,
the image quality has problems.

Using target_code = 0xe000, the currently coded value, I get a bluish
and saturated image. I tried lowering target_code across multiple values
down to 0x4000. The lower the value, the better the quality but the
darker the image.

At 0xb000, the horizontal extremes of the image are white balanced but
it is still noticeably bluish towards the center. This is, two small
vertical correctly white-balanced sections are noticed at the left and
right extremes.

For example, at 0x8000, the image is not saturated anymore, and the
image is way better white-balanced overall. However, the image is
noticeably darker image (75% of the histogram with typical white at 55%
luminosity). There is still a noticeably vertical stripe towards the
blue, a bit off the center towards the right.

At 0x4000, I don't get bluish stripes and perfect white-balance, but it
results in only half of the histogram.

I tried tweaking the o value (offset?) but I didn't seem to find any
kind of pattern, except that if I set it too high I get badly colored
stripes, so I just left them at their original values.

Thanks again.

Hello,

the offset shouldn't be touched. For some undocumented reason the
ASIC needs it to have the shading coefficients match the right pixels.

I appreciate you working on this. I just tested the latest commit. I'm

results. Color is still incorrect in the same way as before.

I made sure I used the most recent commit isolated from the install from

I'd like to correct myself.

Please take my previous message with a grain of salt (or disregard it
altogether). I'm noticing that xscanimage is behaving differently than
scanimage, regardless of whether I recompile both sane-backends and
sane-frontends or just sane-backends.

I noticed this because xscanimage is not affected when target_code is
changed (and after a make make install), but scanimage is. I need to
find some ground on this. Apparently scanimage *is* regenerated when
sane-backends are recompiled.

So far, I have repeated some of the tests with scanimage only and
target_code seems to be too high for my taste. 0x8000 seems like a lot
better value. I'm still testing though.

Thanks.

[sane-devel] HP Scanjet 3670 bad colors

2014-03-31 Thread Octavio Alvarez
Hi.

I'm trying to get my HP Scanjet 3670 under Linux. The scanner works (it
scans and all) but the scan has some color distortion.

I confirmed the scanner works: here is a comparison of a section of a
scanned image in both, Windows and Linux:

http://blog.alvarezp.org/files/scan-hp3670/scan-hp3670-win7.jpg
http://blog.alvarezp.org/files/scan-hp3670/scan-hp3670-linux.png

The scan is a black and white section of a creased document.

Even the problem itself is very unstable. Sometimes the whole page is
distorted, sometimes only gray shades are. *Once* in my 40-like attempts
the output was acceptable but I could not reproduce this success case. I
noticed, though that solid strong colors are usually not distorted.

I wanted to find out if this was an introduced bug, but I could only
compile as back as 1.0.22 + 2 commits and it failed too. Before that,
there is a V4L compilation blocker that prevented me from going further
back.

I tried looking at the code but I realized I understand very little
(near to nothing) about how a scanner works.

Is this a SANE bug? What can be done to make it properly work?

Thanks.

 Hello,

I had the same kind of problem with this scanner. In my case I am
suspecting an hardware/kernel combination as the root of the problem.
Could you run scanimage -L after setting USB debug traces with:

  export SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255
  scanimage -L 2probe.log

 and send the log ?

  Regards,
 Stef
Hello,

I see nothing obvious USB wise. Can you raise genesys debug trace level
and run scanimage -L again ?
export SANE_DEBUG_GENESYS=255
export SANE_DEBUG_GENESYS_LOW=255
export SANE_DEBUG_GENESYS_GL646=255
scanimage -L 2probe.log

Then send the log. You can compress it to get the attachment smaller.

Regards,
Stef

compressing, offcourse, why did I not think of that

Now I thought, if I tried an Ubuntu Live CD, why not try a Fedora 14 live
CD, so I downloaded and burned one. to my surprise, it sees the scanner, and
is able to scan!

conclusion, my current Fedora 14 Workstation environment is not quite sane,
I mean healthy. Since I will be building a new Fedora 14 environment
(Amahi.org), with a vanilla Fedora 14 install, on different hardware (just
got it in today, need to assemble it) and will hook the scanner to that,
I'll wait and see how that goes.

Thank you

Kasper

PS actual scanning with the TRUST does not work, although it is recognized
by scanimage -L by the regular user, but that is some other matter, did
not try it with the Live Fedora 14

   Hello,

you may search the archive about mails for HP 2400 support. The answer
 is the
same. Basically, the process is to record USB logs of the scanner working
under windows, then process them to extract commands and register settings,
then modify the genesys_gl646.c code to handle it the same. There is some
 documentation at http://stef.dev.free.fr/sane/genesys/index.html . The C code
involved is not high, all you'll have to do some modification of existing
 code.
There is allready an device description of the 3670c in
 genesys_devices.c .
To do a quick test, you can uncomment (remove the '#' at the start of the
line) the usb id of your scanner in genesys.conf (which is usually located
at /etc/sane.d), then try to use it from scanimage. It should be detected and
I expect it to fail during warm-up.

Thanks for the reply!
I made some USB-logs with USB Snoopy and tried to decode them with the
decode.sh script, but the resulting file is always empty. Is there
something I should do before with the file cause its an windows-file? I
don't believe that I'm using it the wrong way.

./decode.sh USBlog.usblog

The file output is USBlog.usblog.decode but its empty.

at /etc/sane.d), then try to use it from scanimage. It should be detected and
I expect it to fail during warm-up.

[sane-devel] HP scanjet 3670 why there's no suport?

2007-04-05 Thread sombriks
Hi guys this is my first mail.

well, i have this scanner and it's still not supported (there have mail
in mai archive about genesys backend from 3 years ago!), so i'm into an
intersitng
situation.

My first question is why this backend does not support my scanner. And
my second question is what can i do to help the developement of the
backend (since for instance i can start as tester i also can learn a bit
of C and the SANE patterns of backends and under a more experienced
programmer do something.

Actually i'm a java programmer, but i have some time (sunday's midnigth,
:D) and really want to scan my old photos without buy a new scanner.

Oh, about the thread
(http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2003-November/009360.html),

how can i help these guys? is there some code available for now?

BTW: thanks guys for a project like it: i had used (for example) an
LiDE20 and it worked really perfect.

Hi, I have a hp scanjet 3670 and noticed there isn't
support for it. I am a programmer but not very
experienced (only 2 yrs of hobby game-programming C++
C and asm).

Are there any efforts for supporting this scanner?
My only os now is suse linux 9.0. So now I cannot use
it :(

I would like to help but I fear I am not skilled
enough / dont have the time.

Hi,

we would like to make a driver for the Hewlett Packard
ScanJet 3670 which is currently unsuported by sane.

So we would like to know where to find more
information than the one that can be found in the sane
site. Also if we can find the scanner especifications
somewhere or we have to ask them to HP.
Finally if there is anybdoy else also trying to do
this driver, please tell us.

Thanks in advance and sorry for our bad english.
Greetings.

You mist some pages i think?

Did you check this page (with link to datasheet scanner chip):

Hi

It seems that we are now at least 3 to be interested to write a driver
for 2400/3600 hp scanjet series.
I can organize a bit the group if you want, creating an ugly but
functionnal web page, a mailing list if you thing it can be usefull and
in the future, when we have a bit of code a cvs server...
Tell me if you find it usefull

For the time, I think we should try to get as much information as possible.
I try with hp with no valuable answer (always answer that it is not the
good service) If someone wants to try and to get some specification
that can help...

If not I think we should try to get some log of the usb activity under
windows and try to understand what is going on...

Then we may start writting a piece of code.

I cc sane devel list, If someone is interesting to join, just tell.
If someone more used to create driver has some advices, don't hesitate
to say...

Best regards

Mike

Hi

there is also an Elite MT ram chips but I do not take the number, can
provide it if it can help.

the number on the EliteMT chipset is:

EliteMT (100MHz)
M1B416256A
DZC1HF2GJ

I don't know of anyone. First you should check if the USB descriptors
look similar to one of the other HP (or other) scanners. SOme
information about backend writing is on our homepage.

After forcing the scanner module to recognize the scanner,
I test the hp_scan.c programm in the scanner.txt doc of the kernel, but
with no reponse of the scanner.

then
amble% scanimage -L

device `hp4200:/dev/usb/scanner0' is a Hewlett-Packard HP-4200 flatbed
scanner

but when I try to run xsane:

host/uhci.c: uhci_result_control() failed with status 4c

scanner.c: ioctl_scanner: control_msg returned -110

May this means that the driver would be near th hp4200 one? And that I
can use it as a starting point?

The windows .inf file seems to say that the driver is the same than the
one for 2400 series and I see that someone was interested to write a

Thanks. I've added it to the list.

I test the hp_scan.c programm in the scanner.txt doc of the kernel, but

Well, I would have been surprised if that had worked. That program is
only for the older hp scanners (those that are supported by the SANE
hp backend). If it had worked, you could have used the hp backend.

 then
 amble% scanimage -L

 device `hp4200:/dev/usb/scanner0' is a Hewlett-Packard HP-4200 flatbed
 scanner

The hp4200 backend is not included in SANE. If I remeber correctly, it
detects any HP scanner so that doesn't mean taht it's supported by
that backend.

 scanner.c: ioctl_scanner: control_msg returned -110

I'm not really surprised :-)

May this means that the driver would be near th hp4200 one? And that I
can use it as a starting point?

May be possible but I don't think so. hp4200 is an old backend and
that would mean they use the old chipset again. It's a LM9830 parport
chipset and a PV8630 parallel port-USB bridge.

The windows .inf file seems to say that the driver is the same than the
one for 2400 series and I see that someone was interested to write a

Everything I know is in our lists. Just contact the person mentioned
there. There is also a similarity reported to the 2300 series, but I
don't know if that's really the case.
