Betul. “Sunda Bubul = Iole virescens” adalah kesalahan di Mackinnon “Sunda Bulbul = Ixos virescens” di DBI-2 benar! ☺ (sama daftar burung IoC, Clements dll.) It is the type species of the genus Ixos. Its genus is sometimes merged into Hypsipetes, presumably based on an error in the Sibley taxonomy which keeps them separate but includes I. virescens in Hypsipetes. But actually, Hypsipetes would to be sumsumed within Ixos of anything, as the latter name was established earlier. Either way, the specific name virescens, given to the present species by Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1825, pre-dates the same name as given to the Nicobar Bulbul by Edward Blyth in 1845, and thus the latter species is sometimes referred to as H. nicobarensis (though correctly it would be Ixos nicobariensis). In even more extreme treatments, Iole is also wrongly subsumed within Hypsipetes, and even if the correct merger of Iole into Ixos is performed the Olive Bulbul (Iole virescens) also requires a new species name, as its was established by Blyth in 1845. The RRF is a unique small grant programme jointly operated by Fauna Flora International, UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the United Nations Foundation. With a target processing time for grant applications of just 8 working days, the RRF provides rapid support to enable conservation practitioners to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies in some of the world's most important sites for biodiversity. Eligible applications will: * address a threat(s) in a UNESCO designated natural World Heritage site (NWHS), or tentative NWHS site, in a developing country; * address a new conservation threat(s), or one that has increased significantly in recent days / weeks; * clearly demonstrate that an immediate response is critical to avoid / mitigate the impacts of the threat, and that more traditional funding mechanisms cannot make funding available quickly enough to ensure an effective response; * clearly explain how RRF support will make a significant and measurable contribution to reducing the threats. Please, there is no deadline for submission of grant applications. Applications are received, and funding decisions are made, on a rolling-basis and in response to need. RE: [SBI-InFo] Cikalang christmas
Hi Ady, SBI-ers David James (dulu 'warden' di Pulau Christmas) menjawab: CI = Christmas Island * All 3 photos are certainly CI Frigates, including the juvenile. There has been speculation for 80 years that they breed somewhere in the Java or Yellow Seas. The reality is that they breed only on CI but their main foraging grounds are on the Sunda Shelf (including Peninsular Malay) , extending out to the Sulu Sea. They reach Wallacea , northern Yellow sea, west of the Anadmans, etc. but only as strays. They use non-breeding roost sites off Sabah, off Tioman Island, in the Anamba and Natuna Groups, several spots in the Sulu Sea, and limestone stacks off Phuket in the Andaman Sea. No doubt they have roost sites in the Java Sea as well though no specific ones are known as yet. In fact there are a lot of records from the north coast of Java, and the following helps to explain why. Apparently CI Frigates like the shallow seas, massive freshwater inflow from the great Sunda rivers, the associated estuaries, and the storm activity on the Sunda Shelf . To reach these locations they regularly commute over the top of Java and presumably the Thai Isthmus. They spend long periods on the wing, travelling long distances at slow speeds, and apparently soaring in thermals generated underneath cumulus clouds at 2-3,000 m. Janos Hennicke and I satellite tracked one bird that did a 27 day journey, and some 5,000 km while she had a large chick. She flew through the Sunda Strait, up the e coast of Sumatra, across to SW Kalimantan and e along the s coast before taking a bee-line back to CI over the top of Java. Another female made several trips over Java between CI and the Java Sea before moving to the Natuna Islands after breeding. Because frigates can't roost on the water (unlike all other seabirds), they use roost sites to extend their stay in foraging areas, and extend their marine range beyond the max return trip distance from the breeding colony. Taking 1yr to breed means only part of the population breeds in a given year. The non-breeding roosts also allow non-breeders and immatures to escape the intense competition around the breeding grounds from hormonally charged breeding birds. The roosts compliment their famous aerial skills that have evolved in association with the abolishment of any unnecessary weight (very hollow bones, reduction of preening gland and associated water proofing oils, reduction of salt excretion glands, legs, walking and swimming muscles, webs, etc) and their extreme morphological adaptations to improve flight. The roost sites are an extremely important part of their life-history strategy, though this aspect of their lives is virtually unstudied. Well, that's my interpretation anyway. There are a lot of hypotheses above that have not been tested. RE: [SBI-InFo] Bird Mudik Watch : 3. Kaki-rumbai kecil
Nice photos of the phalarope and wooly-necked Storks! _ From: sbi-info@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kang Bas Sent: 19 October 2007 00:19 To: SBI info Subject: [SBI-InFo] Bird Mudik Watch : 3. [SBI-InFo] recent reports from Indonesia..
Hi all The highlight is the tenth ever record of Sumatran Ground Cuckoo! The bird was obtained from a hunter in January after being inadvertently trapped in a snare set for junglefowl near Bukit Barisan Selatan national park in southern Sumatra. The bird's foot was injured by the snare and it is now recovering in a large enclosure at the WCS field station in BBS, not far from the location of the 1997 record. We hope to be able to release the bird back to the wild once fully fit and checked by a vet to be disease free. The bird has been calling in its enclosure, and we have been able to record it. However we are currently not too sure about what kind of call we are getting; it sounds more like a cat being run over than a Bornean Ground Cuckoo! The bird was trapped at about 800m near Liwa and other reports we have received have all been from similar altitudes (as was the bird camera trapped near Kerinci-Seblat National Park last year) so it does start appear that Sumatran Ground Cuckoo is much more a hill-forest/sub-montane species than Bornean. Some photos to see at http://www.orientalbirdimages.org/search.php?action=searchresult http://www.orientalbirdimages.org/search.php?action=searchresultBird_ID=45 3 Bird_ID=453 All credit to Firdaus Rahman of WCS who has spent the last four months looking for these things and did all the hard work needed to actually get the call from the hunter in the first place.
