You're very welcome. I've been a spamhunter since well, since the
"Green Card Spam" hit Usenet in 1994, and email spam evolved from it
very shortly afterwards. I like the spam definition that Bill
Yerazunis (aka Crash) used when he wrote the crm114 spam filter, which
remains the most effective spam filter in the world. His definition is
"mail I don't want", and his filters work that way with training. I
had a devil of a time migrating him from emacs "rmail" to an imap
based mail system that would keep his email messages pristine for spam
filter training, so that the filter could read the entire message with
all the headers intact. Headers *matter* for spam filtering!

I think they determined that I was wrong...
Actually, I don't really know. So I should sit back and let the experts work.
Good idea about the spam folder.

Check the "spam" folder of your Office365 account. Their spam
filtering is fairly aggressive, and it really needs to be, but it can
wind up catching legitimate email as spam if you don't help train it
by checking for mis-filtered email.

You have been automatically removed from the SCIENTIFIC-LINUX-USERS list
(Mailing list for Scientific Linux users worldwide) as a result of
repeated delivery error reports from your mail system. This decision was
based on the list's automatic error monitoring policy and has not been
reviewed or otherwise confirmed by a person. If you receive this message,
then it means that something is wrong. While you are obviously able to
receive mail, your mail system has been regularly reporting that your
account did not exist, or that you were otherwise permanently unable to
receive mail. Here is some information that may assist you or your local
help desk in determining the cause of the problem:

- The failing address is mailingli...@feedmebits.nl.

- The first error was reported on 2018-09-04.

- Since then, a total of 7 delivery errors have been received.

- The last reported error was: 5.1.8 550 5.1.8 Access denied, bad
outboundsender. Formoreinformationplease goto

Please do not ignore this message. While you can re-subscribe to the
list, it is important for you to report this problem to your mail
administrator so that it can be solved. This problem is not specific to
the SCIENTIFIC-LINUX-USERS list and may also affect your private mail.
This means that you may have lost some private mail as well. Anyone
trying to write to you during the same time frame might have received the
same errors for the same reason.

Re: Your removal from the SCIENTIFIC-LINUX-USERS list

2018-11-16 Thread Gilles Detillieux
I got one of those e-mails yesterday too. I hadn't looked that closely
at the headers, but you're right, it does seem that the Fermilab
Listserv has been moved to Microsoft servers (outlook.com &
office365.com in the Received headers). Other people who've reported
this removal on this list all seem to indicate that the first error was
reported on 2018-09-04, which is what I had in my e-mail too. Maybe
that's when they moved the Listserv to Office 365?

A couple other weird things I noticed:

1. Despite the notice that I was removed from the list, I'm still
getting these e-mails from the list.

2. Unlike the last reported error in Fred's e-mail, which was a
500-range error and therefore a permanent error (mail rejection), the
one in my e-mail was:

- The last reported error was: 5.4.300 550 5.4.300 Message expired -> 451 4.7.1
Greylisting in action, please come back later

The 400-range error codes are temporary failures, and aren't supposed to
be treated as a permanent rejection of the e-mail: the sending server is
supposed to retry later. So why is the listserv counting this as a
delivery error? Both of these cause me to question whether there's some
sort of misconfiguration behind all this.

And ... then I just looked ... and indeed it has.  Youch.

Prety much everyone got unsubscribed from the list including the listowners,
they have been trying to restore it.

Apparently some recent messages from the list were bounced back for sending
outbound spam.

I got something similar.

I was about to mark it as spam, and now that I see that someone else got the
same thing, I'm definitely marking it as spam.

I certainly hope that Fermilab's list-serve hasn't been switched to something

I received an almost identical message to the one quoted in the subject.
It gave the same first-start date 2018-09-04, but I don't know if that
was April, when I rejoined the list with a new gmail.com address, or
September.

I tried several times to rejoin again, using different formats, but got
no sign-on response. A web-based attempt was rejected because others
were already queued. Now what I'm getting is what the archive shows, so
I suppose my 'removal' either didn't happen or has been reversed.

No Office 365 here; only Linux.

I think you have it backwards:

Your Office 365 account has been rejecting emails from the scientific linux
listserv software.
Eventually the listserv gives up and dumps you off of the list.

So blame whoever moved you to Office365.

Fwd: Your removal from the SCIENTIFIC-LINUX-USERS list

Subject: Your removal from the SCIENTIFIC-LINUX-USERS list

- The failing address is fred.f...@gmail.com.

- The first error was reported on 2018-09-04.

- Since then, a total of 7 delivery errors have been received.

- The last reported error was: 5.1.8 550 5.1.8 Access denied, bad
outboundsender. Formoreinformationplease goto
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__go.microsoft.com_fwlink_-3FLinkId-3D526653=DwIFaQ=gRgGjJ3BkIsb5y6s49QqsA=gd8BzeSQcySVxr0gDWSEbN-P-pgDXkdyCtaMqdCgPPdW1cyL5RIpaIYrCn8C5x2A=rUo3B0qf2Uw-s4RhNyXji2xFzpU_AIe6DbvuonXIov0=a-t6j2RMLbvHVxTf4D4B80ynBqAIynmqz5jNQu71J-I=.
