[scifinoir2] Re: [SciFiNoir Lit] I finally get Phillip K. Dick

2006-08-12 Thread Oreoblues

No one really knows what day or time it is. One is never sure of anything
and one never knows if one is missing the boat, on the boat, is the only one
on
the boat, or is the only one on the boat who realizes that the boat isn't
moving although everyone else thinks it is. The thing is to have some bearing
about how much one has missed the boat, or how society has missed the boat and
to see through the glass darkly...at least a bit ...so one can be somewhat
free.

It's a bit like a mystery story, I think. Or like those psychological terror
stories of Edgar Allen Poe. The characters are almosting it, and trying to
see their way clear in a world where the world is always with them, AND where
their own minds aren't that clear either. Just because one is nutty doesn't
mean the rest of the world isn't. One wakes to find that one has awakened into
a weird kind of dream-world. I like that about Dick. -c

NEW YORK (AP) - Janet Jackson has never been afraid to expose some
skin. The
40-year-old singer, newly svelte after losing some 60 pounds, appears
on the
cover of Vibe magazine wearing a skimpy bikini bottom and a necklace
made of
large shells. Her right arm covers her breasts.

Will she ever stop posing for sexy photos? "Of course. When I'm 80," she
tells Vibe. "That's when I'll call it quits."

Two years ago, Justin Timberlake pulled off a part of Jackson's bustier,
briefly exposing one of her breasts, during the Super Bowl halftime
show.

In an interview in the magazine's September issue, on newsstands Aug.
15,
Jackson says the incident - variously referred to as "Nipplegate" and
the
"bra-ha-ha" - is history.

"It's just over and done with. It's old. It's the past. It's history.
I'm
onto something new. Everybody got their licks in - those who wanted
to - and
it's done," she says.

Jackson credits her boyfriend, 33-year-old music producer Jermaine
Dupri,
for giving her self-esteem "a little boost."

quite a bit, but I can't squeeze in more than an hour or so each day. I take

But I really want to get into more serious yoga and start into martial arts

[scifinoir2] Shatner Seeks Representation

2006-08-12 Thread Keith Johnson
Man, that Shatner's got more projects running at once than Spike Lee! Any of
y'all have the skills to be the official Shatner DVD Club spokesperson.
Here's the blurb from the site:
http://shatner.blip.tv/
William Shatner wants you to be the spokesperson for his Sci-Fi DVD Club!
Think you have what it takes?
Submit a video clip (90 seconds or less) of yourself proving why you are the
biggest Sci-Fi fan! Be wacky, be wild, go boldly where no Shatner fan has
gone before. To submit your best entry, be sure to check out
ShatnerDvdClub.com .
[Story]
Shatner Seeks Representation
By Natalie FinnFri Aug 11, 11:39 PM ET
What's Ray Bradbury doing these days?
We ask because William Shatner happens to be looking for the "most talented
sci-fi personality in the United States."
The former captain of the starship Enterprise launched an online contest
Friday to find a new spokesperson for the William Shatner Science Fiction
DVD Club. (Apparently Shatner himself is too busy. Or maybe Shatner singing
the praises of his own club is too obvious.)
Trekkies, Vulcans, Klingons, Borgs and anyone looking to boldly go where no
man has gone before is welcome to submit a short video clip demonstrating
why he is Kirk-worthy via the competition Website, shatner.blip.tv. Wannabes
have until Sept. 30 to get their stuff online.
As on American Idol, only with aliens and time travel, fans will help decide
who gets to be the next face of Shatner's DVD-of-the-month club, a service
from which you can obtain classic sci-fi romps ranging from The Butterfly
Effect to Virus. Um, yeah.
Seven sci-fi experts chosen by Shatner are also going to weigh in on who
they think should represent the actor's latest enterprise. The celebrity
judges and at-home fans will whittle the pool down to 17, after which the
man himself will choose his spokesperson.
"This is an opportunity for new faces and new voices in the science fiction
world to be seen and heard," Shatner said in a statement. "Plus, this is a
chance for passionate fans to be the first to discover the next M. Night
Shyamalan [pre-Lady in the Water, we presume] or Brandon Routh, and help
propel them into stardom."
Entries uploaded and available for viewing so far include a black-and-white
clip of a guy sticking a Captain Kirk action figure up his nose; a girl
sitting in what looks like her office cubicle saying she's the girl for the
job because she thinks Shatner is the sexiest man alive; and a delightful
photo slideshow, set to a jaunty score, announcing the lineup for a William
Shatner All-Star Roast.
The proposed guest list for the unfortunately fictional roast includes a
variety of Star Trek figures, such as Data, the reptilian Gorn creatures,
Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine, and the Khans--including Chaka. Not to mention
the Harlem Globetrotters, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy's Fab Five, Rip
Taylor, Heather Locklear in T.J. Hooker mode, Kermit the Frog, the Predator
of Predator fame, Josie and the Pussycats (the cartoon version) and Whoopi
Goldberg.
May the best video win.
A real-life (yet far less star-studded) roast, put on by Comedy Central, is
set for Aug. 13, with the cable telecast premiering Aug. 20. This lineup
isn't so bad, either, actually: among others, Sharon Stone, Andy Dick,
George Takei, Betty White, Fred Willard, Patton Oswalt and Kevin Pollack are
on tap to skewer Shatner.

Nope. I work in the Boston office (HQ) of an advertising agency (

office (overwhelmingly Caucasian, single, blonde, and from
Connecticut) wear just about anything. As a hetero and married male,
it makes for interesting eye candy. Besides thongs, the latest trend
is the see-thru blouses with netting that stop above the belly
button. This bare midrift or de-clothed zone (DCZ) from above the
belly button to the top of the low-rider jeans makes it quite easy
to see thong straps when my coworkers walk around the floor or sit
in a chair at a meeting. The tattoos are usually in the small of the
back waist level.

I think we're over intellectualizing the thong. Yes, I know I just
started a debate about Bionic characters in a TV show, but I'm
saying. I think the thong is more of decoration than an actual
garment. I think people who are looking to wear/observe practical
thongs are missing the point. It's not supposed to be ON that long,
as I saw it, or it's just supposed to be covering for legal reasons.

started a debate about Bionic characters in a TV show, but I'm
saying. I think the thong is more of decoration than an actual
garment. I think people who are looking to wear/observe practical
thongs are missing the point. It's not supposed to be ON that long,
as I saw it, or it's just supposed to be covering for legal reasons.

If you can squeeze out a couple of hours a day six hours a week, forget about
it...We use to get 1 1/2 hours for lunch when in garrison (Not out in the field
or at war) When I wasn't running 3 miles every other day, what I had eventually
change form a 'six-pack' to 'keg'...Now you could burn tone up with a twenty
minute routine and a jump rope, but a 'prison body', as you call it, is
labor-intesive...

"Ali", he's held on to that swoll-up look. More power to 'em: I work out
quite a bit, but I can't squeeze in more than an hour or so each day. I take
yoga and Pilates at my gym, which are included with the monthly membership.
But I really want to get into more serious yoga and start into martial arts
to boot. But it costs money to do all that. It would be amazing to have a
lifestyle that permitted the kind of intense physical regime actors and
singers can get--along with all the nutritionists, personal trainers, and
martial arts instructors you could ever need!

Come on, Keith, these folks are rich! They can definitely afford it if the
military can...

training, either one of which would task average people in so short a time.
But hey, when you have that kind of dough and your success is (largely)
based on your looks, of course it's possible!

It's possible, guys...saw too many fat bodies in boot camp turn into what
the girls call hunks and we called Marines in no time flat...

KeithBJohnson@ comcast.net wrote: Yeah,
lots of people--such as Tom Joyner--find it hard to believe she dropped 60
pounds *and* got that incredibly cut in such a short time. It's only been
maybe two months at most. Even if she did, it's not healthy at all. I know
that she's fallen out many times in the past due to exhaustion and poor
eating habits. And I know for a fact her workout regimes aren't the best.
They're the kind only someone with lots of money should attempt, as you need
dedicated nutritionists, cooks, personal trainers, hell--massage therapists!
A whole team of people to make sure you don't kill yourself. No matter what
anyone says, losing weight and getting fit is a slow process, and losing
about 2.5 pounds a week is a realistic and practical standard. Any more than
that--which is the Hollywood way--can be dangerous.

One of the things that bothers me in modern society is the obssession with
being too slim and impossiby fit. Now Jackson looks good--and thank God she
has a Black butt that won't go away!--but so many actresses and entertainers
are working themselves out to look like emaciated skeletons. I hate the
message that sends to young girls. Sometimes I feel as if I'm the only guy
left who still thinks the voluptuous look of the old days is the best: for
non-Black women, that'd be Rita Hayworth, Racquel Welch, Sophia Loren,
Yvette Mimieux, Yvonne Craig (Batgirl, Green Orion Slave Girl in Star Trek
the OS). Nowadays you can bet that when I think a white actress has a shape,
someone will tell her she's fat, and you'll come back later to see she's
dropped twenty or so pounds. A few like Scarlett Johannsen resist it, and I
hear a backlash is growing among some actresses, but the unrealistic
expectations are crazy. In the main I think Black people still have a
healthier attitude.
Seriously, I
think the natural butts and big legs many Blacks have help our women not go
too far down that skinny-as-a-board road, but I'm seeing more young Sisters
buy into the hype.

They say everything comes back in style in time. I just wonder when the days
of the voluptuous curvy woman will return to mass media?

Got a question...did she actually pose topless, or was it a hoax???

the Sister looks better when she lets that naturally curvacious body do its
thang. The abs are tight, but cross too far into "Fitness Magazine" for my
tastes. But that's okay. My real problem is Jackson having mutilated her nose
years ago as part of that Jackson frenzy to remake theirselves. Her natural
God-given nose fit her face better. The thin thing she has now just doesn't do
it for me. To me she's gone from beautiful to just very pretty. But then, ain't
no one asking me my opinion! :)

Aug 7, 4:15 PM (ET)

NEW YORK (AP) - Janet Jackson has never been afraid to expose some skin. The
40-year-old singer, newly svelte after losing some 60 pounds, appears on the
cover of Vibe magazine wearing a skimpy bikini bottom and a necklace made of
large shells. Her right arm covers her breasts.

Will she ever stop posing for sexy photos? "Of course. When I'm 80," she
tells Vibe. "That's when I'll call it quits."

Two years ago, Justin Timberlake pulled off a part of Jackson's bustier,
briefly exposing one of her breasts, during the Super Bowl halftime show.

In an interview in the magazine's September issue, on newsstands Aug. 15,
Jackson says the incident - variously referred to as "Nipplegate" and the
"bra-ha-ha" - is history.

"It's just over and done with. It's old. It's the past. It's history. I'm
onto something new. Everybody got their licks in - those who wanted to - and
it's done," she says.

Jackson credits her boyfriend, 33-year-old music producer Jermaine Dupri,
for giving her self-esteem "a little boost."

"I came to realize that younger men had less of a problem with who I am than
older men," she says. "With the younger guys, there was less ego. Things
were less competitive. They weren't threatened by who made more and who made
less."

She says that with Dupri, she feels as if she's met her match.

"When I look at Jermaine, I see myself," Jackson says. "I feel as if I'm
looking in the mirror. The connection I feel with him I have never felt with
anybody else."

Her new album, "20 Y.O.," is slated for release Sept. 26. Dupri produced a
few tracks, and longtime collaborators Jimmy "Jam" Harris and Terry Lewis
pitched in on the disc as well.

The pop star recently said she had packed on extra weight for a role in the
upcoming movie "Tennessee," which she ultimately had to pass on because of
her new record.

When asked if she'd rather have a hit album or win an Oscar, she says: "Win
an Oscar. It's just a passion. But can't I have both? Everybody in my family
says I'm spoiled anyway. I want both..."
