[scifinoir2] OT: Grey's Star to Enter Treatment Facility

2007-01-26 Thread KeithBJohnson
Well, Washington's in real danger of losing his 1.4 million dollar a year job,
so I guess he should do whatever it takes. I wonder, though, is a treatment
facility needed to cure him of possible homophobia? How exactly does a facility
cure one of bigotry, and how bad is so bad you need it? Do they show you
pictures of the people you hate, then shock you if you say something negative?
Do members of the group you insulted surround you 24/7 and cure you via
immersion treatment? Or do people sit around and talk about how their mom
turned them into bigots? If it works, I can think of about eleventy-million
folks that need cleansing of a host of varied bigoted thoughts!

And by the way, given that the problem here is homophobia, wouldn't it by a
stone trip if Washington found himself sharing a room with a klansman or some
other cretin who shares his specific prejudice, along with many others of their
own? Or do they have special wings in this place:

Okay, folks, welcome to the 'No More Hate Clinic'. Homophobes have been
assigned to rooms 1 - 25. Racists--sub-class, American Blacks, Mexicans and
Indians--you'll be in rooms 26 - 50. Racists--sub-class, Foreigners--Rooms 51
-120. Conservative Christian Fundamentalists--you'll be taking the entire west
wing, but you'll have to bunk with the folks who hate Yanni and John Tesh
music.

[From eOnline.com gossip section]
Isaiah Washington has entered a treatment facility. This is what sources
connected to ABC and Touchstone have confirmed to me, after Life Style
magazine broke the story about an hour ago.
According to my ABC sources, one of the options the higher-ups at ABC/Disney
had been considering was to release Washington from the cast of Grey's Anatomy,
without giving him a farewell episode. However, I'm told by an insider that
Washington agreed to do whatever it takes to keep his position at Grey's and
to make amends with the gay and lesbian community. He also vowed to seek help
for his psychological issues—hence, his entry into a treatment facility this
morning.
Grey's Anatomy boss Shonda Rhimes released the following statement:
I speak for all the executive producers here at Grey's Anatomy when I say that
Isaiah Washington's use of such a disturbing word was a shocking and dismaying
event that insulted not only gays and lesbians everywhere but anyone who has
ever struggled for respect in a world that is not always accepting of
difference.
We've been working within the Grey's family as well as with ABC and Touchstone
Television to address the issue in a way that underscores the gravity of the
situation while giving us all a foundation for healing. We applaud and
encourage Isaiah's realization that he needs help and his subsequent choice to
seek immediate treatment for his behavioral issues.
We appreciate the support the fans have always given our show, particularly
during this stressful time. Creatively, we continue to strive to make the best
television we can with the hope that our show reflects the talent, hard work
and professionalism of our cast and crew.
Washington also released his own statement:
“With the support of my family and friends, I have begun counseling. I regard
this as a necessary step toward understanding why I did what I did and making
sure it never happens again. I appreciate the fact that I have been given this
opportunity, and I remain committed to transforming my negative actions into
positive results, personally and professionally.”
GLAAD president Neil Giuliano had this to say: We are pleased to see him
seeking help to deal with the issues he alluded to in his public statement last
week.

Young student's documentary leaving audiences stunned

Kiri Davis is a young filmmaker whose high school documentary has left
audiences at film festivals across the country stunned -- and has re-ignited
a powerful debate over race.

[scifinoir2] Re: An Intro from Marian

2007-01-26 Thread being_marian
1. Name:Marian Moore

2. Location:one of the many suburbs of New Orleans

3. Nickname/ Alias: (none) although I change my name here
periodically--I just get bored.

4. To What Speculative Fiction Character do you relate or
identify(describe the character): Many. Depends on this week's issue.

5. Favorite Speculative Fiction Genres: Once, it was hard SF. Now, it
is more stories that explore Sociology, Ethnology, mysticism.
Actually, still some hard SF because some physics gets close to
mysticism now-a-days.

6. Favorite Speculative Fiction TV Show (canceled shows ok): I liked
Firefly. I like Doctor Who these days. (Do I have to be consistent?)

7. Favorite Speculative Fiction Movie: Some of the usual:
Bladerunner, Gattaca, A Scanner Darkly (finally a PKD story done
well!). If we include fantasy, I would have to give a cheer for the
Ring Trilogy. Oh, the original wicker man is the reason that I
bought a dvd player. My favorite pagan movie.

8. Favorite Speculative Fiction Characters: Umm, more difficult. Most
SF characters aren't people that I want to necessarily meet. Genly Ai
from Le Guin's book maybe. Sam from Zelazny's Lord of Light. Marid
from my first mentor's book When Gravity Fails.

9. Favorite Speculative Fiction Villain: Same comment. I look at my
shelves and the best villains are not villains, per se. Oh, I know!
Except that I can't recall the title right now and I can't find it on
the shelves. It must be stored away. It's a SF story about a serial
killer. Written from the killer's POV. Charming book because the
writer successfully pulls you into the killer's viewpoint. (The
protagonist starts out killing annoying people like car mechanics who
don't fix your car.) Halfway through the book, you realize that you
are cheering on a murderer, for g-d's sake.

11. Favorite Speculative Fiction Film or TV Adaptation of a Book:
Probably, A Scanner Darkly. It's challenging. The Ring Trilogy has
to be close. Both keep a close eye on the book while becoming their
own creation.

12. Favorite Speculative Fiction Film or TV Adaptation of a Superhero:
I'm not really into superheroes. If they film Gaiman's The Sandman,
talk to me. I enjoyed the dark Batman stories (I'm a DC girl. Never
did like Marvel), but superheros can't have my heart.

13. Topics of importance to you: Politics, religion. All the stuff
that you aren't supposed to talk about. Securing women's rights. Free
Speech.

14. Your own published works, if any: Poetry in Drumvoices, and
Louisiana Review. A story in the anthology Crossroads.

15. Your web site: (no time)

16. Your Speculative Fiction Pet Peeves: the term scifi--I am trying
to stop gritting my teeth, really. The assumption that SF is garbage.
We are a vast ghetto however, with our own conventions and workshops.
It's long past time to stop whining about that. In general, I'm
happy. Just wish that people would read more. Shoot--I wish I had
time to read more.

17. Memberships in science fiction clubs: None

18. Anything else you think is important: I really gotta write more.
And actually send stuff out. I need a twin.

[scifinoir2] Connery Considers Returning As Indiana Jones' Dad

2007-01-26 Thread Tracey de Morsella (formerly Tracey L. Minor)
He turned down Gandolf in Lord of the Rings and Morpheus in Matrix all
for the League of Extraordinary Gentleman. I sure hopes he takes this.
He has great chemistry with Ford.

Connery Considers Returning As Indiana Jones' Dad
The Untouchables Oscar winner Sean Connery may reprise his role as
Indiana Jones' father in the fourth installment of the film franchise -
if he likes the script. After months spent refusing to comment about the
new movie, which will bring Harrison Ford back as the intrepid
archaeologist, Connery has told the Teletext news service he is
considering playing Dr. Henry Jones again. The Scottish movie star
created the part for Indiana Jones The Last Crusade almost 20 years
ago. He says, At the moment there's nothing decided. I haven't got the
script. Everything depends on the script.

[scifinoir2] Someone On 'Heroes' Is Going To Die

2007-01-26 Thread Tracey de Morsella (formerly Tracey L. Minor)
race Yourself: Someone On 'Heroes' Is Going To Die
Tim Kring spills the beans about February sweeps

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: TV Guide
Jan-25-2007

The following story contains MINOR SPOILERS for upcoming episodes of
NBC's Heroes.

Death always seems to be looming on the doorstep for Heroes, and
February sweeps will be no exception.

We are going to kill off one of our regulars, someone who has been with
the show from the very beginning, showrunner Tim Kring told TV Guide's
Michael Logan. Some people will be upset, sure.

Kring, of course, won't say who it is, but says just because he's using
the word regular and not hero doesn't mean there's more there that
people should read into.

I personally never use the term 'hero' because I happen to know that,
ultimately, some of these seemingly heroic characters will not be
heroic, he said. But with our ability to bend time and change things,
not all those who are killed are making their last appearance on the
show. And we actually do have plans for the character who's dying.

But before the audience is inundated with death, the Jan. 29 episode of
the show will celebrate both Mother's Day and Father's Day early as
Claire (Hayden Panettiere) and Hiro (Masi Oka) both meet up with their
parents. Claire will find hers in the form of Jessalyn Gilsig from FX's
Nip/Tuck while Hiro will get a visit from Star Trek's George Takei
-- introducing one storyline that may be a focus in the show's planned
second season.

It's going to be blow-your-mind cool, Kring said about Takei's guest
appearance on the show. The character will provide a gateway into a
whole world back in Japan that we will explore in Season 2 -- a story
about Hiro's family and past.

And speaking of Hiro, when the hell will he get his powers back anyway?

He'll be a little handicapped for a while, Kring said. Hiro can't be
so powerful that he becomes a crutch for bad writing. That's why we had
him fail to save the waitress. We can't have him go back i ntime and fix
everything. Hiro's quest for the sword will take him from naive boy to a
real man.

Heroes airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. For more of Logan's interview
with Kring, click here.
