I never liked X-men. They would always cry about being mutants. Give me
Avengers any day. How can you not have really good heroes if you don't have
really
go villains? That is what is lacking if SCI Fi and fantasy. Really good
villains. Killing Linderman off was a bad idea. I never liked heroes but I
liked
the part when Linderman was in the kitchen cooking. How many bad guys cook?
Everyone left when he wanted to talk. That is true power.

What other bad guys are left? Is Elle turning good now? I think all TV
shows are going down the drain because they kill of the bad guys and make the
good
guys self righteous.

Amazon Kindle 'a Bit Sad,' Designer Says

French designer Philippe Starck has proclaimed Amazon.com's Kindle e-
book reader "almost modern" but "a bit sad."

James Niccolai, IDG News Service

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 09:15 AM PST

Philippe Starck, the French designer who champions simplicity over
form, has proclaimed Amazon's Kindle e-book reader "almost modern"
but "a bit sad."

Starck was a speaker at the Le Web 3 social-networking conference
outside Paris on Tuesday. After an energetic, rambling speech about
modern design, he was handed a Kindle by the technology blogger
Robert Scoble and asked what he thought of it.

"In this type of product, the best design is the least design
possible," said Starck. That means it should be small, simple and
strong, and not distract from the content, which should be the most
interesting part.

The Kindle almost achieves that, "but the designer wasn't quite
humble enough to completely disappear, so he made a little slope
here, a diagonal there," Starck said. "It's a little sad because the
concept is modern, but the design is less modern, because the
designer doesn't want to disappear."

"No no," he concluded, "it is almost modern."

The Kindle launched last month for US$399 and allows people to
download books and newspapers over a wireless network. It is a fairly
plain device with a large screen, a keyboard and gently sloping sides
designed to make it comfortable to hold.

"Our top design objective was for Kindle to disappear in your hands --
to get out of the way -- so you can enjoy your reading," CEO Jeff
Bezos said last month.

Amazon should consider it got off lightly from the critique. Earlier
in his speech Starck said most products today are designed only for
profit and without consideration for those who use them. They are "10
percent useful and 10 percent [expletive]," he said.

His speech was billed as "What is social about design" and bore
little relation to high technology, although it was probably the most
entertaining speech of the day and got the most laughs, touching on
furniture designed for sex, Viagra, and the evolution of design over
4 billion years.

"I try to make furniture that makes my friends have better sex," he
said, adding that he plans to get married next Saturday.

I was one of the first folks to leap into the notion of online book reading. I
ahve the Gutenberg site bookmarked, and I used to frequent many online places
featuring fiction. I stopped because I don't have the time to downloasd stuff
anymore. I just can't see this working, despite its portability.

[scifinoir2] Re: CBS Has Its Eye On 'Dexter'

2007-12-11 Thread ravenadal
I am a huge "Dexter" fan. I am particularly fascinated with how the
actor Michael C. Hall plays 180 degrees away from the fey David
Fisher character he played on "Six Feet Under." As Dexter Morgan,
Hall is a noble savage; virile, full of testosterone and, yes,
dangerous. He excretes a quiet menace that is palpable. Women are
attracted to it, from his hard as nails lieutenant, played by Lauren
Velez (in the best role of her life), the harried single mother of
two (Julie Benz) to his danger- junky substance abuse sponsor (the
very hot Jaime Murray). And men are challenged by it (the muscular
Erik King as his nemesis Sgt. Doakes).

The more you watch Dexter, the more you realize he is not the only
one which a moral code that has been grafted onto their true nature.
He is not the only one struggling against inner demons while trying
to do the right thing. Dexter is a monster but ir is not his
character who does the most monstrous things.

(It is near impossible to defend Lt. Laquerta's systematic and brutal
psychological destruction of her rival).

And, unlike cable series that do shocking things just to be shocking
("Nip/Tuck," anybody?), "Dexter" is often truly shocking - the way
real life is sometimes shocking. The way real life can sometimes
deliver that sucker punch you were not expecting. The way life can
knock you out when you are looking the other way.

Dexter knocks me out.

I had every episode of this season's "Heroes" saved on my DVR. I got
behind in my viewing, needed to free up some space, and deleted every
episode of "Heroes" I had saved. Did not suffer one minute of remorse.

the good guys are to GOOD. I always wanted the Legion of Doom to kick the

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Heroes finale

2007-12-11 Thread Daryle

This is an interesting discussion.

I think Magneto is one of the worst villains ever, because I believe just
the opposite is true: I don¹t think we EVER know what his motivation is.
He¹s forever collaborating with other people! He¹s never clearly been
defined as ³I¹m gonna wipe out humanity² because there have been PLENTY of
opportunities and he hasn¹t taken advantage of them.

I think there are events that make for a super villain. That¹s why ³Civil
War² was so great. It turned Reed Richards and Tony Stark into the greatest
Super Villains of all time.

Batman is sort of hard to put in a ³greatest villains² discussion, as he has
no special abilities to protect him. And so you will find him getting his
butt kicked on a pretty regular basis since the 50s. So if your main
nemesis is a crazy rich dude in a cape...you can pretty much just keep
pressing and take the losses until the numbers catch up and you get close
enough to kill him (or his trusty sidekick, which, as you know, has
happened) -- end of story.

Marvel has consistently had the best bad guys -- to me. And As I¹ve said
before, I think ³Heroes² is a Marvel-styled story arc. I like the bad guy/s
in ³Heroes².

One of my favorite villians is Ra's Al Ghul from Batman. He seems to be
one of the more fleshed out villains. I love his back flash stories and
how they reveal his motivations.his relationship with Batman is
never Black and White.
