I am watching an episode of CBS'
Sunday Morning that I taped, well, on
sunday morning. There is a
segment accessing George W. Bush's
presidency. According to a George
Mason University poll of 109
historians 98% rate Bush 43 as a
failure with 61% of them rating him
among the worst in history. It
is noted that John Adams, the second
president, said that there is
one unforgivable sin for which a
president will never be forgiven
and that is to put the country in an
unnecessary war. It appears
that the Iraq War is an unnecessary war

unnecessary as time goes on.

I loved Watchmen(I have multiple copies including the Absolute
edition) and I'm hyped about the movie. The first trailer hooked me. I
think Snyder has nailed the style. The only thing I'm rally worried
about is the updated ending.

I just watched the Japanese trailer for Watchmen online and it has
some footage not seen in either American trailer.

Apologies if this was posted before. Given the age of the
  article, I'll bet it
was. But i've recently started following the Watchmen movie
  news, and came
across this interview. Moore's spitting venom on the project?
  Intense,
   though
i can understand the spirit of his objections given how H'wood
  screws up
   things.
Maybe he should ask Frank Miller what led him to let 300 and
  Sin City be
filmed? I find Terry Gilliam's position that it deserves a five-
  hour
   miniseries
treatment to be intriguing. There really are some works that
  just can't be
   done
full justice in a two or three hour movie. I recall that LOTR
  was originally
slated to be two films, but Peter Jackson prevailed on New Line
  to do three.
Even then some stuff was left out. No idea what if anything
  Snyder had to cut
   to
make the film, nor do I know how long it is. From what I
  understand of the
complicated structure of the comics--a couple of stories
  running, jumps in
time--it will require some skill. Sounds like som!

I must confess, I've never read Watchmen (something I'm about

   When
it debuted, I was swept up in DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths

   and
then all the Year One retellings of Superman, Batman, and others
  that
   followed.
At that time I was also relatively new to Marvel's universe,
  having just
discovered X-Men and Spider-Man three years before. So, I was
  also immersed in
understanding the world of mutants, catching up on backstories
  such as the
   Gwen
Stacy thing, and diving into Marvel's Official Handbood of the
  Marvel
   Universe.
Watchmen was all around me, but i could never find the time...

[scifinoir2] OT, sorta: Adolf Hitler (Campbell) update

Adolf Hitler - the three year old, that is - is back in the news.
According to New Jersey police, the state's Division of Youth and

Lynn Aryan Nation Campbell and 8-month-old Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie

Little Hilter and his parents got their first fifteen minutes of fame

the ordeal in December:

I think people need to take their heads out of the cloud they've

the Delaware River from where the family lives in Hunterdon County, N.J.

There's a new president and he says it's time for a change; well,
then it's time for a change, he continued. They need to accept a
name. A name's a name. The kid isn't going to grow up and do what

The reason why authorities took the children is unclear. According to

[scifinoir2] Pushing Daisies Movie a Possibility

2009-01-14 Thread Tracey de Morsella
Bad news and very good news for Pushing Daisies
http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/pushing-daisies/287954 fans, straight from
star Kristin http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/kristin-chenoweth/160972
Chenoweth: The final episodes, when and if they eventually air, won't
resolve all of the plotlines on the show - but show creator Bryan Fuller
http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/bryan-fuller/286341 has an idea for a
movie that would.

It would wrap up a lot of the unanswered questions that people will have
once they finally air our final episodes, the singer-actress told
TVGuide.com.

And is Fuller pushing ABC to air those episodes?

It's way too good to push on somebody, she said. You either air it and
let the world see it or - you know, that show, I'm sorry if it sounds
arrogant, but it's the best thing ever.

Fuller himself hinted at the possibility at a recent appearance at the Paley
Center for Media in Beverly Hills, where he also talked about his
longstanding idea of resolving the story in comic-book form.

If the movie goes ahead, Chenoweth says she's in - and she believes her
Daisies castmates would be as well.

I'm sure that Bryan Fuller wouldn't do it without the six main characters,
she said. Paul Reubens
http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/paul-reubens/169494 was a big part of
it - we have certain guest stars that are standouts that we'd want back. But
he has such a great idea for it. ... We all want to.

Fuller is returning to Heroes http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/heroes/281246
, his former show, and has written a part for Daisies alum Swoozie
http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/swoosie-kurtz/175952 Kurtz.

Chenoweth, meanwhile, is moving on to David E. Kelley
http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/david-e-kelley/194119 new legal pilot,
Legally Mad.

My character is Skippy Pylon - I love the name - she's the smartest lawyer
in the firm, but she's insane. She's crazy. So it'll be very different from
Olive. It's also going to be very fun for me to play that kind of part -
someone who will just let a judge have it.

Big news from Fox's portion of winter press tour! The net just announced

news? I meant news we all saw coming a mile away.

The final string of episodes will kick off April 17, but exactly how many
episodes there will be is an open question. We've got our remaining batch
of four episodes and then there are a couple more we're contemplating, says
network prez Kevin Reilly, adding that the four-year old Prison has simply
run its course. The show is played out.

It had become the increasingly inaccurately titled Prison break, as they'd
been out of prison for like 3 seasons.
Everybody on that  show should be fine,  but it's been time to  end it. Wait
'til you  see what they're replacing it with.

I watched the first two seasons. It was actually innovative with the idea of a
guy breaking into prison, carrying all the schematics and things he needed in
the form of body tattoos. But like any show that has a theme that shows up in
the title, once they'd broken from prison, the writers had to work hard to keep
it interesting. There were several plot threads that they milked along, and I
went for a while. Okay, I thought, so know it's not 'Prison Break', it's
'The Fugitive'. So I stayed another season. But then, when they had the
chance to wrap the show up and have it go out as a good dramatic series, they
contrived to put the main characters in yet *another* prison, this one in
Panama, I believe.

Turned the channel soon as that happened, and never watched again.

We have a patron asking the following:

I graduated high school in 1963 and in my senior year literature text
there was a story (I am nearly sure) by Stephen Vincent Benet. It was a
science fiction story about a man who goes to a travel agency to buy a
ticket to another planet and he goes to this barn and is sitting with a
lot of others and nothing happens. Then, he jumps up and says we've all
been made fools of and runs out the door just as the others are beamed
up. Then, he goes back to the travel agency and the man says, You left
this money here by mistake. Can you hlep me find the name of this story
which appeared in our Lit. text that year. I graduated from Santiago High
School in Garden Grove, California in 1963. It would be helpful to me to
find this story for a project I am working on.

Does this ring any bells?

Thanks!

Ricardo Montalban dies at 88

By BOB THOMAS, Associated Press

Ricardo Montalban, the Mexican-born actor who became a star in
splashy MGM musicals and later as the wish-fulfilling Mr. Roarke in
TV's Fantasy Island, died Wednesday morning at his home, a city
councilman said. He was 88.

Montalban's death was announced at a meeting of the city council by
president Eric Garcetti, who represents the district where the actor
lived. Garcetti did not give a cause of death.

The Ricardo Montalban Theatre in my Council District -- where the
next generations of performers participate in plays, musicals, and
concerts -- stands as a fitting tribute to this consummate
performer, Garcetti said later in a written statement.

Montalban had been a star in Mexican movies when MGM brought him to
Hollywood in 1946. He was cast in the leading role opposite Esther
Williams in Fiesta. He also starred with the swimming beauty in On
an Island with You and Neptune's Daughter.

A later generation knew Montalban as the faintly mysterious, white-
suited Mr. Roarke, who presided over an island resort where visitors
were able to fulfill their lifelong dreams. Fantasy Island received
high ratings for most of its 1978-1984 span on ABC television and
still appears in reruns.

In a 1978 interview, he analyzed the series' success:

What is appealing is the idea of attaining the unattainable and
learning from it. Once you obtain a fantasy it becomes a reality, and
that reality is not as exciting as your fantasy. Through the
fantasies you learn to appreciate your own realities.

Jackson Out as Nick Fury?

Star says negotiations with Marvel have broken down.

by Jim Vejvoda http://movies.ign.com/email.html

January 14, 2009 - Samuel L. Jackson
http://stars.ign.com/objects/913/913546.html has dropped a bombshell: he
just might not be back to play Nick Fury
http://stars.ign.com/objects/923/923839.html in Iron Man 2
http://movies.ign.com/objects/142/14251831.html or The Avengers
http://movies.ign.com/objects/769/769931.html .

Jackson, who made a cameo as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the end of the
first Iron Man, told the
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2009/01/nick-fury-no-mo.html
Los Angeles Times that he heard from his representatives last week that
things weren't going so well. There was a huge kind of negotiation that
broke down. I don't know. Maybe I won't be Nick Fury, Jackson said.

He continued, Maybe somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury
won't be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics
world so [they're saying to me], 'We're not making that deal.'

A Marvel spokesperson advised the paper that the studio does not comment on
active negotiations.

No word yet on who might replace Jackson if the role of Fury is recast, but

Watchmen Settlement Update

The latest developments on the legal battle.

by Jim Vejvoda http://movies.ign.com/email.html

January 13, 2009 - Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox, the two studios at war
over the right to distribute the long-awaited Watchmen
http://movies.ign.com/objects/034/034260.html movie, are reportedly
close to reaching a settlement after a weekend of productive talks.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the parties met behind closed doors
Monday in Los Angeles federal court to discuss details. Neither Fox nor
Warners would comment on the discussions, which continued for about 30
minutes in the chambers of Judge Gary Feess. Warners has not pressed its
earlier request to move up the Jan. 20 injunction hearing, suggesting a
settlement is near.

The fallout from the Watchmen lawsuit looks to be most costly for the
producer at the heart of all the brouhaha, Lawrence Gordon
http://stars.ign.com/objects/918/918171.html .
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-watchmen13-2009jan13,0,794434.story
The Los Angeles Times reports that the biggest bill of all could fall to
the film's producer, Larry Gordon, his lawyers and their insurers, who could
be on the hook for substantially more money. Court documents in the nearly
yearlong dispute over the superhero movie's distribution rights show that
Warner Bros., which is poised to lose valuable rights to Watchmen after a
judge's favorable ruling for Fox, is pursuing Gordon 'for all damages Warner
Bros. suffers as a result of Fox's claims.'

The paper adds that Warner Bros. damages could potentially total tens of
millions of dollars. The Times piece also provides a breakdown of how
Warners' case apparently unraveled and why all parties involved are making
Gordon the target of their wrath.

Russell Dumping Ridley?

Rumors of behind-the-scenes drama in Nottingham.

January 12, 2009 - The rumor mill says there's trouble in Nottingham

According to
http://www.nypost.com/seven/01102009/gossip/pagesix/crowe_chaos_claims_sien
na_149443.htm New York Post's Page Six, Sienna Miller
http://stars.ign.com/objects/914/914180.html dropped out of the Robin
Hood project Friday. She was to have played Maid Marian in the Ridley
Scott-directed film opposite Russell Crowe
http://stars.ign.com/objects/914/914122.html , who is attached to play
both the legendary outlaw and his nemesis, the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The column adds that Crowe still hasn't dropped enough weight to play Robin
Hood so the producers are looking for an older, plumper actress to play the
role so [Crowe] doesn't look like a paunchy grandpa. Someone in her late 30s
or early 40s. As a result, filming has reportedly been pushed back to
April.

But the biggest claim Page Six makes is that Crowe, who has made four films
with Scott, is angling to get his Gladiator director fired off the film.
'All of this was done behind Ridley's back,' the insider said. 'He has no
idea.' The studio flatly denied it when asked by the Post.

Warner Bros. had pulled the plug on it. There was talk that the Batman movie
series had something to do with it, including speculation that director
Chris Nolan wasn't happy to hear a Batman-connected TV series was happening
at the same time as his films.

Yesterday, I asked The CW's president of entertainment, Dawn Ostroff, what
exactly occurred regarding The Graysons, and she confirmed the movies were
involved. Said Ostroff, This is what happened. It was initially pitched to
us and we were all very excited about it. And the studio had some issues
with the fact that there probably will be another [Batman] movie and it was
one of those sensitive things.

Ostroff said that Warner Bros. was definitely thinking about The Dark Knight
and its potential sequel, but seemed to imply the show could still happen at
some point, adding, If they redevelop it as a TV show, it will be with us,
but I think it was too soon after the [Dark Knight] movie had been out,
while they're still figuring out what they're going to do with the feature
franchise.

[scifinoir2] The Most Ridiculous Plots From SciFi Original Movies

We, as a fanbase (as in fans of science-fiction), enjoy our movies well-made
and crap free. But through the years, one channel has consistently slapped
us in the face with drivel made on a shoestring budget with actors you've
never heard of.

Sci-fi, like horror, is a genre that does allow some leeway in the quality
of the films -- some of the lowest budget films become cult classics -- but
then again, some of them get bankrolled by the SciFi Channel. So what I want
to look is the worst of the worst, the movies so terrible that repeated
viewings, or even one viewing for that matter, is enough to cause internal
bleeding, among other things.

So welcome to the SyFy 6, a place for you to relax and realize that I am
unequivocally right ... every time.

6. Aztec Rex -- A great top of the list, this movie's plot is dumber than
most fan-fiction you'll find on the Internet any day. A group of
conquistadors, led by Hernando Cortes, comes upon a tribe of Aztecs who
worship two living Tyrannosaurus Rex. Bear with me here because it just
gets worse.

If you find the video on YouTube, it clearly shows this movie was filmed by
someone who either genuinely hates you and your family, or has nothing left
to live for. And no, I don't mean your father.

Either way, I will give this movie one thing: its TV commercial. It wins an
award for best line ever: They came for a new world, but they found a lost
world! Every time I see that TV spot, I decide to watch this movie. But
then I remember the six months I spent in a burn ward after the first time I
saw it.

5. Boa Vs. Python -- So let's sum this all up. Two snakes, one winner.

In the fight no one ever cared to see, an 80-foot python is released on an
unsuspecting group of scientists and other random people, and the only way
to quell this evil is to have an 80-foot boa constrictor let loose to fight
it.

I like to call this the Godzilla theory, where for every one giant mutated
animal, there is at least one giant mutated animal that will fight against
the first giant mutated animal, leading to a conclusion so mind-bogglingly
stupid that it, well, boggles the mind.

Spoiler warning! For those of you who haven't seen this and actually want to
(Why?) ... the python gets in the subway system and starts wreaking havoc.
Then the boa comes up in and gets into a fight with it -- which in my
opinion, seeing snakes fight is the least interesting thing ever. Anyway,
the boa somehow jumps out of the way, and the python is killed by a speeding
subway train, leaving everyone wondering why they decided to watch this
awful movie in the first place.

4. Chupacabra: Dark Seas -- Later released as Chupacabra Terror, this
little diamond in the rough was released in 2005, making it officailly the
worst 88 minutes of 2005.

The plot runs like this: A scientist catches a chupacabra on a remote
Caribbean island. Wait, wait, wait ... if we are to believe that the
chupacabra exists, then we kind of have to accept that the chupacabra is
mainly sighted in Mexico, and that any cryptozoologist will tell you that
the chupacabra is a Mexico native.

So, barring a speed boat or a lot of swimming, I severely doubt that a
chupacrabra would be in the Caribbean, but I digress.

So they decide to ship the chupacabra back to the Americas. But in transit,
the chupacabra escapes, and proceeds to kill a group of Navy Seals sent to
investigate.

Wait, wait, wait again ... Navy Seals are trained in infiltration and other
modes of search and destroy, but yet they can't manage to off something that
subsists off goats? Chupacabra in Spanish means goat sucker, not
invincible killing machine that can take on trained Navy operatives without
flinching.

I see so much wrong with this movie: It has horrible plot holes and the
camera work is reminiscent of strapping a camera to the back of a
hyperactive child and telling him that you've hidden cake somewhere on the
boat.

3. Ice Spiders -- Let's analyze this one fully, shall we? This is taken
from the almighty Wikipedia http://wikipedia.org : A group of young
Olympic skiers go to train with a retired professional skier at a ski resort
in West Virginia.

So far so good ... Olympic skiers, training, in West Virginia, the
westernmost of the Virginias.

Genetically tinkered, and cellular grafted spiders escape from a nearby
laboratory and begin killing and eating the humans at the resort.

Oh, that's not good.

The skiers and the resort workers must try to escape the spiders while
waiting for officials from the lab to attempt to capture the spiders.

How big are these spiders? Could you catch them with a jar?

There are multiple scenarios, including spiders terrorizing the young
skiers in an abandoned school bus.

Why is there an abandoned school bus in the mountains of West Virginia?

Critical reception has been extremely poor, and the movie had

Comic books adaptations have been swelling in popularity over the last few
years, and this past summer The Dark Knight stormed international box
offices.

So, to maximize profits, Warner Bros. has reportedly placed all DC comic
book properties on hold.

A lot of the DC movies at Warner Bros. are all on hold while they figure
out [as] they're going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things
like that so everything has just been pressed pause on at the moment,
writer and director David S. Goyer told IESB.

The Dark Knight already has pulled in an astounding $997 million worldwide
and will be making a return to selected theaters at the end of January in
the hopes that the movie will push beyond the $1 billion mark. With profits
like that, it looks like Warner Bros. is now looking to capitalize on comic
book movies.

It was the double header of both 'Iron Man' and 'The Dark Knight' coming
out, so more than ever I think they've realized, I think DC was responsible
for 15 percent of Warner Bros.' revenue this year, something crazy like
that, so they realized that comic books, it's become a new genre, one of the
most successful genres, Goyer said.

Marvel Studios already has a plan in place for its upcoming projects and the
foundations have already been laid with references in Iron Man and also a
cameo appearance of Tony Stark at the end of The Incredible Hulk.

Removing cats to protect birds backfires on island

By MICHAEL CASEY, AP Environmental Writer

Tue Jan 13, 9:18 am ET

BANGKOK, Thailand – It seemed like a good idea at the time: Remove all
the feral cats from a famous Australian island to save the native
seabirds.
But the decision to eradicate the felines from Macquarie island
allowed the rabbit population to explode and, in turn, destroy much of
its fragile vegetation that birds depend on for cover, researchers
said Tuesday.
Removing the cats from Macquarie caused environmental devastation
that will cost authorities 24 million Australian dollars ($16.2
million) to remedy, Dana Bergstrom of the Australian Antarctic
Division and her colleagues wrote in the British Ecological Society's
Journal of Applied Ecology.
Our study shows that between 2000 and 2007, there has been widespread
ecosystem devastation and decades of conservation effort compromised,
Bergstrom said in a statement.
The unintended consequences of the cat-removal project show the
dangers of meddling with an ecosystem — even with the best of
intentions — without thinking long and hard, the study said.
The lessons for conservation agencies globally is that interventions
should be comprehensive, and include risk assessments to explicitly
consider and plan for indirect effects, or face substantial subsequent
costs, Bergstrom said.
Located about halfway between Australia and the Antarctic continent,
Macquarie was designated a World Heritage site in 1997 as the world's
only island composed entirely of oceanic crust. It is known for its
wind-swept landscape, and about 3.5 million seabirds and 80,000
elephant seals arrive there each year to breed.
The cats, rabbits, rats and mice are all nonnative species to
Macquarie, probably introduced in the past 100 years by passing ships.
Authorities have struggled for decades to remove them.
The invader predators menaced the native seabirds, some of them
threatened species. So in 1995, the Parks and Wildlife Service of
Tasmania that manages Macquarie tried to undo the damage by removing
most of the cats.
Several conservation groups including the International Union for
Conservation of Nature and Birds Australia said the problem was not
the original eradication effort itself — but that it didn't go far
enough. They said the project should have taken aim at all the
invasive mammals on the island at once.
What was wrong was that the rabbits were not eradicated at the same
time as the cats, University of Auckland Prof. Mick Clout, who also
is a member of the Union's invasive species specialist group. It
would have been ideal if the cats and rabbits were eradicated at the
same time, or the rabbits first and the cats subsequently.
Liz Wren, a spokeswoman for the Parks and Wildlife Service of
Tasmania, said authorities were aware from the beginning that removing
the feral cats would increase the rabbit population. But at the time,
researchers argued it was worth the risk considering the damage the
cats were doing to the seabird populations.
The alternative was to accept the known and extensive impacts of cats
and not do anything for fear of other unknown impacts, Wren said.
Since cats were eradicated, the grey petrel successfully bred on the
island for the first time in a century and the recovery of Antarctic
prions has continued since the eradication of feral cats.
Now, the parks service has a new plan to finish the job, using
technology and poisons that weren't available a decade ago.
Wren said plans to eradicate both rabbits as well as rats and mice
from the island will begin in 2010. Helicopters using global
positioning systems will drop poisonous bait that targets all three
pests. Later, teams will shoot, fumigate and trap the remaining
rabbits, she said.
Some of the earlier critics are now behind this latest eradication
effort, saying it should help the island's ecosystem fully recover
because it would remove the last remaining invasive species.
Without this action, there will be serious long-term consequences for
the majestic seabirds which nest on the island including the four
threatened albatross species, and for the health of the island
ecosystem as a whole, said Dean Ingwersen, Bird Australia's
threatened bird network coordinator.
We believe that the process they are going to follow uses best
practice for this type of work, Ingwersen said. And that all
possible ramifications have now been considered.

Why The Graysons Didn't Happen

CW president on how The Dark Knight came into play.

January 13, 2009 - There was a lot of attention given when The CW and Warner
Bros. began development on The Graysons
http://tv.ign.com/objects/142/14285873.html , a potential new series
focusing on the adventures of a young Dick Grayson
http://stars.ign.com/objects/924/924142.html , before he meets Batman
http://stars.ign.com/objects/924/924128.html and becomes Robin. Only a
few weeks after the news that the project was moving forward, came word that
Warner Bros. had pulled the plug on it.

Ostroff said that Warner Bros. was definitely thinking about The Dark Knight
and its potential sequel, but seemed to imply the show could still happen at

but I think it was too soon after the [Dark Knight] movie had been out,
while they're still figuring out what they're going to do with the feature

Let me check my archives: I dropped a review of Chupacabra to the group a
couple of years ago. Really disappointed that Giancarlo Esposito and John
Rhys-Davies had to star in that dreck. I just dropped a blurb about Roanoke
the other day, since Adrian Paul's in it. Never saw the movie, and had no idea
it was this bad. Wow!

[scifinoir2] McG Wants Will Smith to Play Captain Nemo?

2009-01-14 Thread Tracey de Morsella
Last week, the trades announced that McG

a/ was going 20,000 leagues under the sea to tell the origin story of
Captain Nemo and his incredible submarine. I'm sure we all began making a
mental list of who would make a really cool Captain Nemo because that's what
film fans do.

Well, McG http://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/mcg/1258741/main is doing
the same thing, and when Latino

to do it, been trying to get a hold of him. I've been wanting to work with
him for a long time already. That guy's great. Oh. While Smith is capable
of good work, he isn't the actor that first comes to mind when McG describes
this version of Nemo. The character Nemo in this film is more about
obsession, he is obsessed and people tend to forget that when you become so
obsessed you end up being the villain.

Add to the fact that Jules Verne's Nemo is actually a tragic Indian prince,
whose origin and secret lair are revealed in The Mysterious Island -- it
could be a great, star-making part for (and I'm going to steal CHUD's
brilliant casting idea) a guy like Naveen Andrews

Let's hope Smith is too busy producing The Karate Kid remake, and being the
