I can't believe you remember that! That was what? Back in the '70s, when
polyester and bell bottoms were in vogue? I remember that comic clearly. In
investigating some event in the black community, Lois realizes she can't enter
that world. There's a scene where she sits next to an elderly, blind black
woman on a park bench. The lady is very pleasant, chatting amiably--until Lois
speaks, at which point she takes her cane and huffs off. Lois thinks "once he
heard me speak she realized I wasn't black". Thus, she goes to Superman to use
some stupid device of his to temporarily make her black. If I remember
correctly, a militant community activist earlier had pointed to Lois as she
walked by a rally, calling her the enemy. He's later shot by some thug type
(probably a former best friend or brother gone awry), and Lois has to give him
some of her blood for him to live. At that point she was still in blackface
(body?) The last panels of the book are when he awakens to see the *white* Lois
standing over him, and finally clasps her hand in a signal of racial solidarity
and tolerance.

Brings a tear to my eye! (Sniff)

I think you might be confusing the editor role with Robbie Robertson, editor of
the Daily Planet in the Marvel Universe. There is a reporter of color who's
been around in the Superman books for years: Ron Troupe. Troupe's one of those
black characters that's really smart and calm and educated and dependable. He
is married to Lois Lane's sister Lucy. I remember reading some books years ago
where Lois' father had major issues with his daughter marrying the black
reporter. I've never thought of Troupe as a close friend of Clark's, a la Jimmy
Olsen, and frankly, while I've read superman comics for some four decades, I
can't remember him making a real big contribution to the storylines over the
years. He reminds me of those black characters added to be really impressive,
but then not really central to the storyline. It was treatment like that that
irritated me about Pete Ross on "Smallville" being recast as a Black man who
then was pretty useless and ignored in the stories.

Here's some info on Troupe:

I should mention that last time I read the Spidey books, Robbie was no longer
editor of the Bugle. The paper was sold to a yellow journalism type by Jonah's
wife, after Jonah suffered a heart attack. She wanted to remove what she felt
was the source of much of Jonah's stress. The new owner is all about
sensationalism and using the paper for his own political connections, gossip
stories, etc. Robbie finally got fed up and followed ace reporter Ben Urich
over to Frontline, a new daily Urich runs as editor-in-chief.

I haven't read Spidey books in about ten months. The complete dissolution of
Peter and MJ's marriage, and subsequent erasure of their entire life together
from reality by Mephisto, really turned me off the book. That, and the "Civil
War" foolishness of Peter revealing his identity to the world, which led to the
shooting of Aunt May, which led to the erasure of Pete and MJ's life from
reality, (and the erasure of Pete's secret identity from reality) was just
horrible.

Crazy.

Note toward the end of the article it says that Troupe is the most "highly

In addition to Steel, I can think of minor characters (at the time) that have
been in his books, such as Black Racer (the paralyzed man who's one of the New
Gods, the avatar of Death, but only mobile when this Aspect is upon him), Black
Vulcan (who seems to be more prominent in recent JL books, and has a daughter
with similar powers), and, as already mentioned, Vixen.

Steel is probably his most enduring friend of color. He was introduced during
the "Reign of the Supermen" arc. This took place after Supes' "death" by
doomsday. Several beings appeared bearing aspects of Superman's
appearance/powers, and there was speculation that one of them might have been
his reincarnation. This was aided by a storyline where a comatose Johnathan
Kent met Clark in the spirit world, and tried to shepherd his soon away from
the light of eternal rest that was beckoning him. one assumed his spirit came
back into our world, but where? I was a bit disappointed that alone among the
stand in heroes--the Cyborg Superman, Superboy, the Eradicator--Steel was the
only one not considered to possibly be a reincarnation of Superman. He was
known from the start as a separate being.

Anyway, over the years, Steel has been Superman's friend, partner, fellow
warrior, lieutenant, and confidant. With the possible exception of Emil
Hamilton, he knows more about Kryptonian tech than anyone, helping superman
upgrade the Fortress --once moving it to a "pocket" universe--retool his robot
servants, fix his Kryptonian battle armour, etc. Steel has a young niece who's
a genius, and who has likewise helped with the Kryptonian tech. A long running
theme a few years back was how she upgraded the main robot helper in the
Fortress to speak hip-hop slang. Little mechanized creature would say stuff
like "yo, Supes, that bad guy is fierce. You better bring yo' A-game, dog!"
Cute.

 Subject : [scifinoir2] The Parrot

 Date : Tue, 28 Jul 2009 05:09:44 -0700 (PDT)

 From : Augustus Augustus

 To : Black SciFi

 Cc : Sci Fi

A
guy is browsing in a pet shop and sees a parrot sitting on a little
perch. It doesn't have any feet or legs. The guy says aloud, "Jeesh, I
wonder what happened to this parrot?"

The parrot says, "I was born this way. I'm a defective parrot."

"Holy crap," the guy replies. "You actually understood and answered me!"

"I got every word," says the parrot. "I happen to be a highly intelligent
thoroughly educated bird."

"Oh yeah?" the guy asks, "Then answer this -- how do you hang onto your perch
without any feet?"

"Well,"
the parrot says, "this is very embarrassing but since you asked, I wrap
my weenie around this wooden bar like a little hook. You can't see it
because of my feathers."

"Wow," says the guy. "You really can understand and speak English can't you?"

"Actually,
I speak both Spanish and English, and I can converse with reasonable
competence on almost any topic: politics, religion, sports, physics,
philosophy. I'm especially good at ornithology. You really ought to buy
me. I'd be a great companion."

The guy looks at the $2 price tag. "Sorry, but I just can't afford that."

"Pssst,"
says the parrot, "I'm defective, so the truth is, nobody wants me cause
I don't have any feet. You can probably get me for $20; just make the
guy an offer!"

The guy offers $20 and walks out with the parrot.

Weeks
go by. The parrot is sensational. He has a great sense of humor, he's
interesting, he's a great pal, he understands everything, he
sympathizes, and he's insightful. The guy is delighted.

One
day the guy comes home from work and the parrot goes, "Pt,
" and motions him over with one wing. "I don't know if I should tell
you this or not, but it's about your wife and the postman."

"What are you talking about?"
 asks the guy.

"When the postman delivered the mail today, your wife greeted him at the door
in a sheer black nightie."

"WHAT???" the guy asks incredulously. "THEN what happened?"

"Well, then the postman came into the house and lifted up her nightie and began
petting her all over," reported the parrot.

"NO!" he exclaims. "And she let him?"

"Yes. Then he continued taking off the nightie! , got down on his knees and
began to kiss her all over"

Then the frantic guy demands, "THEN WHAT HAPPENED?"

"Damned if I know. I got a hard-on and fell off my perch!"

Fate.

EA blasted over questionable marketing stunt

by Ben Silverman

Buzz up!

July 24 6:15 P.M.

Comic Con

Games maker EA has incited a wave of backlash over the latest marketing ploy
for their upcoming action game, Dante's Inferno.

In an effort to promote the title at last week's San Diego Comic-Con event, EA
decided to run a contest asking showgoers to "commit acts of lust" with any
models working at the convention's myriad booths. They were then instructed to
submit photos via social networking sites like Twitter or Facebook. The winner
would receive "dinner and a sinful night with two hot girls, a limo service,
paparazzi and a chest full of booty," while five runners-up would have to make
do with a copy of the game, a $240 gift card and assorted game merchandise.

Of course, EA gave themselves an out, noting on the official rules page that
"...judges reserve the right, in their sole and absolute discretion, to
disqualify any Submissions that are inappropriate for any reason, including
without limitation, for depicting or mentioning sex, violence, drugs, alcohol
and/or inappropriate language." In other words, don't get crazy while you
commit your "acts of lust."

Unfortunately for EA, the gaming community hasn’t responded well. Twitter posts
about the marketing effort have been largely negative; tweets to #EAfail have
spiked, with many accusing the company of being tasteless, immature and sexist.
In turn, those responsible have issued a respectful if unapologetic tweet right
back:

"'Commit acts of lust' is simply a tongue-in-cheek way to say take pictures
with costumed reps," it reads. "Also, a ‘Night of Lust’ means only that the
winner will receive a chaperoned VIP night on the town with the Dante's Inferno
reps, all expenses paid, as well as other prizes."

It's just the latest EA marketing stunt to go awry. Back in April, the company
got in hot water for sending journalists illegal brass knuckles to promote
their game based on The Godfather II. And at the E3 trade show in early June,
EA angered Christian groups after making waves with a viral marketing campaign
for -- you guessed it -- Dante's Inferno, this time featuring fake protesters.

Dante himself never had this much trouble.

[scifinoir2] The Parrot

2009-07-28 Thread Augustus Augustus
A
guy is browsing in a pet shop and sees a parrot sitting on a little

Fate.

I picked it up too. Interesting, and I must say I at least
like the idea of a new GL storyline that I haven't heard of before. And with
all the other crazy colors of ring magick over the years, at least the idea of
the nullifying/anti- life black magick makes a kind of sense.

just picked up the newest GL book, 'Blackest Night' it is the
newest mini-series starring the entire GL Corps..not just the greens, but the
blacks, blues, reds, and yellows.  book 1 was pretty good.  waiting on book 2
now.

interesting interpretation of Hal Jordan that makes him sound
more nuanced than in days of old. I confess that, since I was never a GL fan, I
haven't read the books in years. My only real time of reading GL was back when
Hal was more of a straight out whitebread hero.  I didn't catch the whole fall
from grace, when he turned nuts and killed his GL fellows, and only
sporadically followed the saga after that, when he became a cosmic being,
redeemed himself, and finally regained humanity.
A hint of what you're talking about can be found in one book I read where
Batman was giving the recently returned Hal a problem. Hal was having none of
Bat's judgemental nature, was more irritated than intimidated, and ultimately
ending up slugging Batman. The other Leaguers were impressed that Hal had the
nerve to do that, and that he was able to catch Batman
 unawares.

I think John Stewart in the cartoon is representing all GL in
the cartoons; thus he is part Hal part Kyleno Guy thank god. I accept
John's role in the GL panthenon due to the fact that he might be the second
best Lantern ever...Kyle might have him beat. Keith, I honestly think that
having a JLA without Hal Jordan is wrong. He is basically a suicidal fighter
pilot given ultimate power, and he let it drive him insane. This alone makes
him the perfect hero- Sacrificial and flawed. Maybe not the perfect DC hero
(because he has flaws) but the perfect Marvel hero.

Good luck. In the comics, at least, it appears Hal Jordan is the pre-eminent
Lantern once again. I read the first issue of this "Black Lantern" saga, and
there's a scene where Hal appears in the rebuilt Coast Ciy, flanked by John
Stewart, Kyle Rayner, and Guy Gardner.  Hal called them his "wingmen".  And,
never having been a faithful GL fan, i am struck by how much less tough and
commanding John Stewart seems to be in the comic, compared to his portrayal in
the Justice League cartoons. And that's saying something, since the cartoon GL
had an extremely limited pallet of constructs he made with the Ring.

I ended up with an older woman at a club last night
She looked pretty good for a 60 year old,
in fact, she wasn't too bad at all! I found myself thinking
she probably had a really hot daughter.

We drank a bit (well more than a bit), we had a snuggle, and she asked me
"If I had ever had a 'sportsman's double'?"
"What's that I asked?"
"It's a mother and daughter 3some" said replied.
"Oh," I said as my mind began 2 race and embrace the idea, "No I haven't"
as I started 2 wonder what this daughter of her's may look like.

We drank a little more, then she says with a wink,
"Tonight's your lucky night" as we went back to her place.
We walked in, and she turned on the hall light.
She went to the base of the stairs and yelled up stairs,
"Mom, you still awake?"

Fate.
