I actually don’t mind him, but those side storylines like him neglecting and
passing over his AI car for a better one and the episode with the area 51
rivalry was horrible. However, you are probably right and some demographic
study told them that the young white males that they are after like those silly
storylines.

I think that they hinted that Fargo is gay a couple of episodes ago.

I think that the sheriff and allison having a romance would have made
interesting tv when they first started the show, but as time passed on it
wasn't going anywhere and lost steam.

I think that they killed off Stark's character because his character wasn't
going anywhere. There are a few others that just disappeared as well such as
the son, and the animal trainer guy.

They killed off Stark back when they killed the son. He was first exposed to
the alien object that was in sector 5. He left the show then came back. Then
they killed him again with a time paradox.

Allison's son was fully exposed to the alien object by accident. He was
autistic / physics genius. The problem is that making him autistic didn't give
him many plots to participate in.

Everyone watching the new season of "Eureka"? I must saying I'm enjoying it,
even more than last season. I think that's because Carter is noticeably more
instrumental in solving cases than last year. Every ep so far, as the big
brains discuss string theory, M-branes, and quantum mechanics, Carter's always
the one guy in the room who cuts through the superficial coverings to get to
the heart of a problem. Indeed, one wonders how the scientists can do anything:
as smart as they are, they seem to exemplify what my mom used to say about
"Book sense, but no common sense".

Fortunately they have also toned down the Carter-is-kinda-dumb thing too.
Tracey mentioned that last year that had gotten out of hand. There are still
some moments like that, but I frankly don't think they're needed. Carter's
obviously not a supergenius, so let's lose the "Uh...English please? I'm
clueless" schtick. A couple of weeks ago, for example, Allison spoke of the
space object coming to Earth in 126 hours, and Carter looks confused. Allison
then had to amend and say "five days"! Give me a break: you telling me Carter,
an intelligent and highly competent man of the law, can't figure that out?
Again, good thing that angle is being minimized.

Some other thoughts on the show:

* I like the new lady brought in, who runs Section 5 (?) At first she irritated
the hell out of me by belittling Carter's intelligence, but I like the tender
side and sense and humour she has.

* Good to see that Carter is falling for the new scientist. For some reason I
never really liked his love for Allison, and it's less appealing to m

New to this group, but I thought I'd chime in with my favorite cancelled scifi
shows.

I really liked Otherworld from the 80s and was sad to see it cancelled. Does
anyone remember that one?

Also hated to lose Alien Nation, Farscape, Babylon 5, and most recently
Torchwood.

What Does District 9 Have To Say About Apartheid?

Posted Tuesday, August 18| By Jonah Weiner

http://www.slate. com/blogs/ blogs/browbeat/ archive/2009/ 08/18/what-
does-district- 9-have-to- say-about- apartheid. aspx

I caught a matinee of District 9 today with a friend who is a devoted sci-fi
buff, and who spent several years living in South Africa (in the post-apartheid
aughts). Afterward, we agreed we'd had a blast—unlike Dan Engber, whose review
is here—and then got to the harder work of puzzling over the film's politics.
That District 9 grapples with apartheid is irrefutable, but what does it have
to say on the subject? (Spoilers hover above the next paragraph, their alien
turbines idling.)

My friend was troubled by the depiction of the stranded aliens as "shiftless"
"intergalactic schlubs," as Dan puts it. There's something unsavory, he argued,
in director Neill Blomkamp portraying his allegorical shack dwellers as dumb,
hapless, and helpless members of a community so thoroughly rent by poverty and
oppression that the only hope for their betterment lies either in intervention
from the outside (Wikus van der Merwe) or the lone efforts of an anomalous,
intellectually advanced insider (the alien called Christopher Thompson). This
logic can take on an infantilizing, unempowering aspect, he said, that denies
oppressed parties agency, the ability to organize effectively from the ground
up.

We were both uncertain about Blomkamp's ultimate point about miscegenation, for
lack of a better word, as represented by Wikus's gooey transformation into a
prawn. Right through the film's final image, Wikus regards his othering from
himself as a horror he wants reversed—he fights the evil MNU not out of virtue
but out of self-interest and, in the process, becomes a microcosmic model for
any "native" body that fears "foreign" contamination. The transforming/
transformed Wikus isn't the embodiment of post-racial harmony. Rather, the
metamorphosis alienates him twice over, strands him between categories that are
themselves left intact: He's not a human and he's not a "prawn," either.

That's fine—it makes him a more interesting character and District 9 a more
complicated film. But while it's clear Wikus isn't a radical, Blomkamp's own
position remains opaque. It occurs to me that we could easily imagine the South
African Lou Dobbs, say, sympathizing with and championing the prawns—after all,
they don't peskily want jobs or equal rights as citizens; they just want to
wash our hands of themselves and fly on home.

If time were linear (a line), it'd be one dimension. A true line is one
dimensional, a plane (like a sheet of paper), would be two dimensional, of
course the cube is three, and then the concept of spacetime is associated with
four by some

Speaking of time, there's a new book out I've heard about where one of the
physicists working on the new supercollider in Europe tries to explain
Relativity in an easy-to-understand method.  It's called "Why Does E=mc2? And
Why Should We Care?" The concept of time is discussed, including why it's truly
relative (depending on one's frame of reference only) and why it flows in only
one direction, at least for those of use with mass.  I listen to a program
called "Think", from KERA in Dallas. The book's author, Brian Cox, did an
hourlong interview recently that was pretty good. You can find the interview
here:

Einstein's Theory of Relativity
[2009-08-12 13:00:00] Is Einstein's theory of relativity too complex for the
average Joe to comprehend, or just waiting for the right teacher? We'll discuss
common misconceptions about relativity this hour with Brian Cox, particle
physicist and co-author of the new book "Why Does E=MC2 And Why Should We

Here's a link to a review of the book. I plan to pick it up soon:

Observed time isn't a dimension, though. And if it's in a line, it should be
two dimensions as a line's two dimensional.

No surprise about Tarantino's flick. I'm not really motivated to see it though.
Anyone seen or heard of the Korean vampire flick "Thirst"? I've heard some good
things about it.
I saw "District 9" yesterday and loved it. Had two issues: the shaky camera in
the first 20 minutes or so, which darn near had me throwing up, and the
negative portrayal of the Nigerians (though to be fair, no human in the movie
was portrayed well). The Nigerian thing was a major issue, but overall I
really enjoyed the flick. Hope to drop a full review soon...

Quentin Tarantino's World War II actioner "Inglourious Basterds," a pivotal
Weinstein Co. release starring Brad Pitt, debuted gloriously during the weekend
with an estimated $37.6 million in chart-topping boxoffice.

"Basterds" is touted by some as a make-or-break film for the recently
struggling indie, even though Universal is distributing the film
internationally and will share evenly in any worldwide profit. Sony's sci-fi
thriller "District 9" finished second after falling just 49% in its sophomore
session to $18.9 million and a 10-day cume of $73.5 million.

The weekend's other three wide openers bowed softly. Robert Rodriguez's
PG-rated family fantasy "Shorts" from Warner Bros. rung up $6.6 million for
sixth place; Fox Searchlight's comedy "Post Grad" registered $2.8 million in
10th, and Disney's sports documentary "X Games 3D: The Movie" -- slotted for
one week only in 1,399 extra-dimensional venues -- fetched just $800,000.

Among other second-frame holdovers, Warners' literary adaptation "The Time
Traveler's Wife" fell a modest 46% to $10 million in fourth place for a $37.4
million cume, while further down the rankings Paramount Vantage's comedy "The
Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" slid 53% to $2.7 million and a $11.2 million cume.
Disney's "Ponyo" dipped 32% to $2.4 million with an $8.1 million cume, and
Summit Entertainment's youth musical "Bandslam" dropped 60% to $890,000 and a
$4.5 million cume.

The weekend top 10 films collected $108 million, or 31% more than the top
performers over the same frame last year, according to Nielsen EDI. That marked
a third straight year-over-year weekend uptick.

In a limited bow, Paramount Vantage unspooled comedy "The Mark Pease
Experience," starring Ben Stiller and Jason Schwartzman, in 10 theaters and
grossed $3,000, or just $300 per venue.

Freestyle Releasing opened the comedy "My One and Only," starring Renee
Zellweger and Kevin Bacon, with two playdates in New York and two in L.A. and
grossed $60,708. -- a promising $15,177 per engagement.

IFC Films debuted the crime thriller "Five Minutes of Heaven," starring Liam
Neeson and James Nesbitt, in a single New York location and fetched a sturdy
$5,200.

Elsewhere in the specialty market, Samuel Goldwyn/IDP's Paul Giamatti starrer
"Cold Souls" added 32 theaters for a total 53 and grossed $133,295, or a so-so
$2,515 per venue, as cume climbed to $340,068.

Focus Features' Korean vampire pic "Thirst" added three playdates for a total
17 and grossed $31,400, or a thin $1,047 per engagement, with a $1.8 million
cume.

Fargo has a girlfriend. He had a major crush on Jo, and this woman who had a
crush on him, took Jo’s form. When he discovered he was connecting with the
Doppelganger, they hooked up and went off into the sunset. He still could be
gay or bi, but it does not look like they are pursuing that angle

I do not like Jo’s boyfriend either. Even though it was weird, I kinda liked

I was getting sick of the silly Fargo side plot distractions, but last week
they did not have one, it seemed more like season one (which was my favorite),
so I am starting to like it again. Getting rid of the sister who found
everything wrong with him was a good move too. I realize they need conflict,
but I do not think it worked with her. I also like that they decided to have
Carter move on, if they are not going to get him together with Alison, then let
him move on. I like the chemistry that he has with the new woman and that
they did not pretend that he and Alison never existed.

I’m also had the moved away from everyone calling him stupid and let the theme
shift back to he as the commonsense guy often being the one with the big ideas.
I get the sense that maybe they experimented and are returning to what worked
in the first place. I did not like the 5 day stupid think either. I’m not
sure why they keep pursuing that angle. I hope it is a fluke.

By the way, I liked the husband on True Blood, but I think he is just a guest
star with at best re-occurring status.

Let’s hope there are no Fargo bowling or car stories next week and that they
stay on track

Where'd you hear that? I thought I heard them speak a language that wasn't
English or Afrikans?
Either way that doesn't matter: the were black people, and portrayed pretty
badly as drug dealers, weapons dealers, thugs living in squalor, even had the
prostitutes committing the worst act of all, having sex with the "prawns". The
whites in teh movie were reprehensible too, but they were at least on top in
that world. I was sorely troubled by the portrayal of the black thugs, whatever
their country of origin.

One thing, though. They're not supposed to be Nigerian, specifically.
It appears that, in SA, the term "Nigerian" is synonymous with
"gangster".

2009-08-23 Thread Keith Johnson
A couple more thoughts:

* I'm actually glad Nathan Stark is gone, at least in terms of the contrived
rivalry he and Carter had. I was tired of that angle too. I guess I just like
Carter's character, and feel the character needs more development to stand on
his own, outside of angles like the battles with Stark or the "he's the dumbest
guy in the room" thing.

* I don't care for Jo's boyfriend--too generic cool genius--but do like that
she has a boyfriend. Nice to see some softer angles to her...

* After all this time, the voice of the computer Sarah (named after Sarah
Michelle Gellar) still cracks me up. Everyone relizes that that "female" voice
is actually done by the actor who plays Fargo?

For some reason I
never really liked his love for Allison, and it's less appealing to me this
season for some reason. I say let that angle die, and let him move on.
* Anyone know why the guy who played allison's ex- and new-husband left the
show? I thought he was coming back, but here he's on "True Blood" now.

* When is Henry going to get a life and a love? I hate what they did by killing
off his love, and this recent--spoiler!--storyline of bringing back a
computerized copy of her, then killing it off? WTF?! And speaking of that,
Henry is mayor now, but doesn't seem to do any mayoral stuff. He basically
still sports the mechanics' garb, when he's not at GD running experiments. Does
he even have an office at city hall?
* Carter is sheriff, charged with keeping all law and protecting everyone in
the town, including those at Global Dynamics. Yet he doesn't have a high
security clearance. Allison refused to discuss the oncoming spaceship with him
because of that, and that top secret section that's been reopened is off limits
to him without an escort. Okay, I guess I'm confused: if he's "only" the
sheriff, maybe he wouldn't have top secret clearance to everything at GD. But,
more times than I can count, Carter risks his life by entering some high
dangerous lab to fight a creature of living ooze, gravity wells, etc. In fact,
Carter's the *only* person who consistently tackles these dangers, which
usually means he's finally brought in to these top secret discussions. Is it
logical, therefore, for his clearance to be relatively low?

One thing, though. They're not supposed to be Nigerian, specifically.
It appears that, in SA, the term "Nigerian" is synonymous with
"gangster".

[scifinoir2] Basterds" Take Box Office,"District 9" Holds Strong

2009-08-23 Thread Keith Johnson
No surprise about Tarantino's flick. I'm not really motivated to see it though.
Anyone seen or heard of the Korean vampire flick "Thirst"? I've heard some good
things about it.
I saw "District 9" yesterday and loved it. Had two issues: the shaky camera in
the first 20 minutes or so, which darn near had me throwing up, and the
negative portrayal of the Nigerians (though to be fair, no human in the movie
was portrayed well). The Nigerian thing was a major issue, but overall I really
enjoyed the flick. Hope to drop a full review soon...

*
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i91e05ffd5e045bf1badc73eee3940fce

17 and grossed $31,400, or a thin $1,047 per engagement, with a $1.8 million
cume.

Re: [scifinoir2] Visualizing Up To Ten Dimensions

2009-08-23 Thread Keith Johnson

You can find the interview
here:

http://www.kera.org/audio/think.php
Ein stein's Theory of Relativity
[2009-08-12 13:00:00] Is Einstein's theory of relativity too complex for the
average Joe to comprehend, or just waiting for the right teacher? We'll discuss
common misconceptions about relativity this hour with Brian Cox, particle
physicist and co-author of the new book "Why Does E=MC2 And Why Should We
Care?" (DaCapo, 2009).

Here's a link to a review of the book. I plan to pick it up soon:

Observed time isn't a dimension, though. And if it's in a line, it should be
two dimensions as a line's two dimensional.

I
remember that too, good stuff. Never did figure why the Deryni of
Gwynedd didn't leave en masse and go to the neighboring countries, some
of which had openly practicing Deryni.
By the way, I remember getting
misty eyed later, when Evaine-who, if I remember had lost a child
too--was doing one of the spiritual/psychic things, and caught a
glimpse
of the Afterlife. There, she saw her husband and child, and decided to
just let go, while her frantic brother tried to call her back. that was
something...

I hear you, pal.

My own moment-of-tears
with the written word came when I first read Katherine Kurtz's "Camber
the Heretic", a scene when a group of psi-gifted humanoids where being
massacred by humans. One of the humanoids (Deryni, their race was
called), Rhys, a doctor with the power to heal, was trying to escape
when he saw injured humans nearby. Being a doctor, he followed the
Hippocratic and stopped to begin healing the person. As he was doing
so,
he was hit from behind, a blow that stoved in his head, destroying the
part of his brain that enabled him to heal. His wife Evaine learned
this
as she went into his mind, trying to access his power to heal him. All
the while, he was still conscious, feeling himself die, saying his
goodbyes to his friends telepathically. .. marked the first and only
time I've ever thrown a book.

[scifinoir2] Re: GREATEST CANCELED SCIFI SHOWS

2009-08-23 Thread tasheka4
New to this group, but I thought I'd chime in with my favorite cancelled scifi
shows.

I really liked Otherworld from the 80s and was sad to see it cancelled. Does
anyone remember that one?

Also hated to lose Alien Nation, Farscape, Babylon 5, and most recently
Torchwood.

And, as I learned roughly fourteen times previously, not all cable providers
carry all the good channels... I was supposed to get DirectTV last week, but my
mother let my Idiot Sister make the call and, as expected, she botched it
royally. Had to cancel the appointment, and reset another. Strangely enough, as
if knowing that I'm on the verge of moving on, Comcrap (spit!) is acting
better. I get everything except BBC America now. Too late, dillweeds! Martin
OUT.

I was shocked, shocked I tell you, to discover G.I. Joe existed over twenty
years before Hasbro remade him as a literal boy-toy. Shoot, the movie "The
Story of G.I. Joe," starring Robert Mitchum and Burgess Meredith, came out in
1945, a full eighteen years before Hasbro created the "11 1/2 inch realistic
action figures" "Rocky" and "Ace." Who knew?

I remember that too, good stuff. Never did figure why the Deryni of
Gwynedd didn't leave en masse and go to the neighboring countries, some of
which had openly practicing Deryni.
By the way, I remember getting misty eyed later, when Evaine-who, if I
remember had lost a child too--was doing one of the spiritual/psychic things,
and caught a glimpse of the Afterlife. There, she saw her husband and child,
and decided to just let go, while her frantic brother tried to call her back.
that was something...

I hear you, pal.

My own moment-of-tears with the written word came when I first read
Katherine Kurtz's "Camber the Heretic", a scene when a group of psi-gifted
humanoids where being massacred by humans. One of the humanoids (Deryni, their
race was called), Rhys, a doctor with the power to heal, was trying to escape
when he saw injured humans nearby. Being a doctor, he followed the Hippocratic
and stopped to begin healing the person. As he was doing so, he was hit from
behind, a blow that stoved in his head, destroying the part of his brain that
enabled him to heal. His wife Evaine learned this as she went into his mind,
trying to access his power to heal him. All the while, he was still conscious,
feeling himself die, saying his goodbyes to his friends telepathically. ..
marked the first and only time I've ever thrown a book.

Sorry, but the biggest tearjerking moment for me was not in a
movie...It was from Octavia Butler's "Wild Seed," when Anyanwu came to the
conclusion that she was never going to change or escape from Doro, so she
decided to just commit suicide (basically let herself die as she was immortal).
Doro, realizing that Anyanwu was the only constant in his life, breaks down and
pleads with her not to do it because he could not bare life without her (gotta
read the bookI'm not good at explanations. ..in fact, I suck at it).
Until I read that book, I had never shed a tear over the written word

Doesn't shock me. I don't even think *scientists* understand
wtf time is, and it's as much 3D as space is 3D. I can see why people see them
as intertwined and they are, but people just...yeah.

Doesn't shock me. I don't even think *scientists* understand wtf time is,
and it's as much 3D as space is 3D. I can see why people see them as
intertwined and they are, but people just...yeah.
I'd love to see it.

Adrianne, I don't want to spook you too much, but there's a school of thought
that time is at least four-dimensional as well, measured by aspects such as
length, breadth, width and duration. They may seem similar to conventional
measurements, but they aren't. I've got the paper on it stuck away somewhere on

Well put. I watched the first 3 eps on hulu, but probably won't watch any more.
Thye've made it too hard for me to care what's in pod 4.

Funny thing I noticed though: about 2:15 into Ep 3 (scene: the packed-up living
room of the couple originally on the mission before the guy got cut) is the
same as Starbuck's appartment on BSG. Ha!

People like us don't lose out grip. We're watching the rest of the world lose
*its* grip.

Pal, I just said something to that effect to a friend of mine in Virginia whoi
just saw the movie yesterday with her husband. If a species has the
wherewithall to pack up whatever it can as its civilization is collapsing, and
portage it all who-knows-how- many light-years to get to Earth, it can't be
"shiftless". ..

Um...I'm having a hard time digesting someone calling spacefaring aliens
'shiftless.' This denotes to me a serious disconnect from that reality...

My friend was troubled by the depiction of the
stranded aliens as "shiftless" "intergalactic schlubs," as Dan puts it.
There's something unsavory, he argued, in director Neill Blomkamp portraying
his allegorical shack dwellers as dumb, hapless, and helpless members of a
community so thoroughly rent by poverty and oppression that the only hope for
their betterment lies either in intervention from the outside (Wikus van der
Merwe) or the lone efforts of an anomalous, intellectually advanced insider
(the alien called Christopher Thompson). This logic can take on an
infantilizing, unempowering aspect, he said, that denies oppressed parties
agency, the ability to organize effectively from the ground up.

We were both uncertain about Blomkamp's ultimate point about miscegenation, for
lack of a better word, as represented by Wikus's gooey transformation into a
prawn. Right through the film's final image, Wikus regards his othering from
himself as a horror he wants reversed—he fights the evil MNU
not out of virtue but out of self-interest and, in the process, becomes a
microcosmic model for any "native" body that fears "foreign" contamination. The
transforming/ transformed Wikus isn't the embodiment of post-racial harmony.
Rather, the metamorphosis alienates him twice over, strands him between
categories that are themselves left intact: He's not a human and he's not a
"prawn," either.

Oh I don't know, Martin...getting into a tight sitting position is going to be
murder with this 'spare tire'...and trying to hit a target well over 5 football
fields away...do I really need to explain that?

But that is the way it works in the Corps...everyone is a basic grunt rifleman.
Behold, I am probably the only trombone player you know who could take you out
at 500 meters with a service rifle! (M-16A1 &A2)

I'm aware of that, my focus was more on the pilot aspect of the show. It didn't
make sense for them to be in a fighter pilot role then a couple of episodes
later storming a base.

That's one of the things that I liked and disliked about the show. I didn't
understand why they would waste training on making someone into a grunt and
into a fighter pilot. You should be one or the other and not both. That would
take too long to do in a war situation especially if you are trying to save the
planet. But I also liked the disorganized feel because things would fall apart
a bit if the bad guys were to hit certain areas first.Organization and
logistics would get lost. It happened to the Russians when they fought the
Finnish army and lost in the 1930s.
