In this case, I agree with you. She still deserved to be penalized for the
extreme nature of the "oughta shove this ball..." comment, but the provocation
was understandable.

Serena?

I think it was built up frustration on Serena's part. She's had a history of
getting shafted by the officials in several big matches. Add that to the
hostile atmosphere of seing your foreign opponent being cheered more than you
at the frakin' U.S. Open and she blew a gasket. For the line judge to call a
questionable foot fault at that stage of the match was unthinkable.

I'm not saying she was right...but I understand.

[scifinoir2] JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS Announced

An original story from award-winning animation/comics writer Dwayne
McDuffie (Justice League) rooted in DC Comics’ popular canon of
“Crisis” stories.Bruce Timm (Superman Doomsday, Green Lantern) is executive
producer.
Lauren Montgomery (Wonder Woman, Green Lantern) and Sam Liu
(Superman/Batman: Public Enemies) are co-directors.In Justice League: Crisis on
Two Earths, a “good” Lex Luthor arrives
from an alternate universe to recruit the Justice League to help save
his Earth from the Crime Syndicate, a gang of villainous characters
with virtually identical super powers to the Justice League. What
ensues is the ultimate battle of good versus evil in a war that
threatens both planets and, through a diabolical plan launched by
Owlman, puts the balance of all existence in peril.All-star voice cast led by
Mark Harmon (NCIS) as Superman, James Woods
(Ghosts of Mississippi) as Owlman, Chris Noth (Sex and the City, Law &
Order) as Lex Luthor, William Baldwin (Dirty Sexy Money) as Batman,

(X-Men) as the President.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: OT: Kanye West Again Ruins Award Recipient's Moment

2009-09-15 Thread Keith Johnson
That is very true. But what a sad demonstration of that newfound freedom we
have.

And for my last take, let me reiterate this wasn't about defending some
innocent *white* girl. I did see a kid (only 19) having fun, ruined by a fool.
Had this been Keke Palmer, I'd have been incensed. Had it been Mariah Carey,
I'd have been pissed. When he did it to the white guys a while back, i was
taken aback.

I see a lot of blacks got ticked at what they saw was people attacking the Big
Black Man for menacing their Pure White Virgin. And yeah, I know this is
America: I know there's some of that among some of the populace. It's just not
my motivation.

Like I said, to me, this is irritation at a Black man acting a fool, from a guy
raised in a time when we were raised to "act like you got some sense".

And by the way, when Jay Leno asked West what his mom would have thought about
his behaviour, he could only hang his head in shame and sadness. Brother isn't
bad, just needs to get some distance and focus on what he's trying to be.

My last take on the Kanye West mess: it wasn't too long ago when a black man
would be lynched for having the temerity to step wise to a precious white
flower of the Confederacy. That Mr. West can do so on national television and
live to tell about it is indisputable evidence of how far we have come.

As a character in my unpublished novel says, "What virtue is there in being
chaste when that is the only choice you have?"

[scifinoir2] Re: Zombies

2009-09-15 Thread daikaiju66
Both have their uses. The fast Dawn of the Dead '04 variety are terrifying but
the Return of the Living Dead versions were worse because they were fast and
retained some intelligence and had to be completely destroyed before they
stopped trying to eat you.

I loved the infected of 28 Days Later too although they technically aren't zeds.

The Romero vintage shamblers are great because one or two you can fight off or
kill. But their moans or other noises attract more and more zeds to the party
sooner or later you're in too deep.

Have you ever read World War Z or The Zombie Survival Guide? Great stuff. Max
Brooks has a new book where he'll flesh out some of the historical outbreaks
mentioned in The Zombie Survival Guide. So we'll get zombies in Roman times,
the Old West and others. Fun stuff.

The sad thing is even on video you couldn't even tell if her
toe nudged the line. So for a judge to make that call and lead into match point
was a headslapper.

The funny thing to me is hypocrisy of the "bad boy" of tennis John McEnroe and
others.

2009-09-15 Thread daikaiju66
The sad thing is even on video you couldn't even tell if her toe nudged the
line. So for a judge to make that call and lead into match point was a
headslapper.

The funny thing to me is hypocrisy of the "bad boy" of tennis John McEnroe and
others.

Exactly right, Daryle. Guess I can brand myself one of the luckier people
walking, to have had a mentor early on when my father left my life via divorce.

You've glossed over one of the most important parts of your own statement.
Who, exactly, is Kanye West's mentor? As I said yesterday, when his mom died
everybody said they understood, but they didn't. When my father died I threw
myself into my work, and became really good at it. And I was a complete ass
to people on a regular basis. Think Ari Gold, but being 22 years old. By the
time I got a mentor, I already had a reputation for cursing people out in
public meetings. My mentor showed me how to be a professional. She also
warned me to stop trusting employers and to start my own shop, even as a side
hustle. I listened. But without that mentor's influence, I'd be bitter and
unemployed today.
Kanye West has no family left except the entertainment business. A cold
business that sucks the life out of you and leaves you naked on the pavement.
A lot of people KNOW this and have turned their backs on him. At this point,
ONLY someone of Jay Leno's stature and maturity can advise him. Sadly, there's
nobody Black of that stature who'll talk to him.

Serena and Kanye's cases are similar in that a Black person expressed emotion
and a person reacted like someone was going to eat them. Not only was Serena's
foot foul a wrong call, what she said was nothing compared to what others,
namely one celebrated John McEnroe, has said over the course of a career.
Additionally, critics of both have said they should have "stayed quiet" and
"known their place". This is a very dangerous trend that I will never be with.
There is a time and place for everything, but entertainment, even sports

Zombies work as social commentary, the fear of contagion, a
sign of the apocolypse, humanity stripped down to its hungry, animal core, etc.
It's a wide open genre and there's more than enough room to have an interesting
take on the subject without having to deconstruct it.

Personally, I love zombie stories and movies of various stripes. The only ones
I don't like are the ones from Brian Keene and few others that feature
intelligent zeds, those possessed by demons and the like. I like the Romero
variety.

There is a time and place for everything, but entertainment, even sports
entertainment, is a place for emotion and expression.

RE: [scifinoir2] Zombies

2009-09-15 Thread Martin Baxter

Grayson,

In all of my stories (they're interlinking), I treat zombies as a misunderstood
species, simply cursed by a disease to be undead and need sustenance, which
happens to be human brains. One of my protagonists goes out of his way to save
them, relocating them to other dimensions where they can feed freely.
Admittedly, those dimensions are usually where his worst enemies abide...

Aside from that, I can't really answer the question. I used to try to apply the
same question to the love of vampyr, but there's the romantic angle to them
that doesn't factor in with zombies.

Seriously people, what is the fascination with them? I know
I've been off loop for awhile... that's what happens when you only have 36
hours in a day (I double count what folks might call sleepytime) but I've just
seen the Zombieland commercial and while it looked funny, It made me ask this
question all over again. What is up with zombies? Why are people fascinated by
them? why are they such an enduring group of beasties?

TWENTY DOLLARS

On their wedding night, the young bride approached her new husband and asked
for $20.00 for their first lovemaking encounter. In his highly aroused state,
her husband readily
 agreed.

This scenario was repeated each time they made love, for more than 30 years,
with him thinking that it was a
cute way for her to afford new clothes and
other incidentals that she needed.

Arriving home around noon one
day, she was surprised to find her husband in a very drunken state.
During the next few minutes, he explained that his
employer was going through a process of corporate
downsizing, and he had been let go. It Was unlikely that, at the age of 59,
he'd be able to find another position that paid anywhere near what he'd been
earning, and therefore, they were financially ruined.

Calmly, his wife handed him a bank book which showed more than thirty years of
steady deposits and interest totaling nearly $1 million. Then she showed him
certificates of deposits issued by the bank which were worth over $2 million,
and informed him
that they were one of the largest depositors in the bank.

She explained that for the more than three decades she had 'charged' him for
sex,

these holdings had multiplied and these were the results of her savings and
investments.

Faced with evidence of cash and investments worth over $3 million, her husband
was so astounded he
could barely speak, but finally he found his voice and
blurted out, 'If I'd had any idea what you were doing, I would have given you
all my business!'

That's when she shot him.

(another standing ovation)

And, into this, the story that Kanye was on the first ep of "The Jay Leno Show"
(he'd been scheduled well ahead of this). Jay asked him, point-blank, what his

Kanye almost broke down.

I'm not even close to doing a "Bill Cosby", whatever that means. And I have
sensed some black folks irritated because Taylor Swift is a young blonde white
girl. That has nothing to do with it for me. I think his behavior is just
boorish and stupid. One thing black people used to be able to count on was
that we had good "home training", that our mamas and daddies taught us to act
like we had some "sense". When he did this to a group of white male singers a
while back, I thought that was ridiculous. We have to be careful to avoid this
near malicious pleasure at what we see as some black hero giving it back to
Whitey. that ain't what this is about.

You're way too focused on what's cool, what's hip, what's seen as edgy, what
gets people press, at people's "rights". What you're missing is that the right
of speech for you should not infringe upon the right of speech for me. Had
Kanye presented and wanted to say that, I'd have still thought he was out of
line, but okay, that his biz. Don't invite him back to speak. Had he said it in
an interview later, his business. He he blogged or twittered it, fine. His biz.

But this guy jumped up on stage and took the mic from another person, ruined
her moment, and then proceeded to tell millions she didn't deserve it. That is
out of line. You can't possibly tell me that in your life--personal, church, or
business--if someone did that to you, you'd let it go as "their right to free
speech". You tellling me that everytime you made a presentation at work, got
an honor, received praise from someone, that if someone jumped u and did you
that way you'd be cool with it? The way I was raised, you want to say something
you wait your turn. You act with decorum and common sense. And the way I grew
up, when you physically Bogart your way into someone's space and face, it's a
belligerent act that could start something. It's rude and stupid, no matter the
gender, age, race, class, coolness, genius, standing, or rep of any of the
principals involved.

As for comparing this to other governments, what of it? Boorish behavior is
boorish behavior. And even then, you're getting it wrong. The Brits do a strong
session where one person talks, another jumps up and responds, and on and on.
The crowd yells and harumphs, and all, but the Parliamentarians don't jump up
and wrestle the mic from each other. If they continue always speaking over each
other, they're called to order.

I strongly think we need to step back from this rancor based on politics,
ideology, class, and (what I'm hearing here) racial conflict, and remember what
it is to "act like you got some sense".

Kanye is a black man raised by a black mom who I know taught him better. Were
she still alive, I'm pretty sure she'd have been just as upset with his
behavior as I am, no matter what color Swift had been.

I think that you are trying to do a Bill Cosby here. Frankly,
he can do whatever the hell he wants short of shooting someone on stage. All
press is good press. The subtext that I am reading here is "poor little white
girl abused by the evil buck negro..." I have no sympathy for the rich rug rat
at all nor do I like Kanye or his music. What I am defending is his right to
say what he said.

MTV is a joke, and a thin shadow of what it used to be.

Okay. I lied. THIS is my last take on the Kanye West mess:

Kanye West spoiling the "moment" for a white girl is more controversial than
Jack Black exhorting everyone in the audience to "hold hands and pray to
Satan." Only in America.

RE: [scifinoir2] New Moon

2009-09-15 Thread Martin Baxter

I'm not big on movie sequels at all, but here's one I'd greenlight...

Dracula himself, upon learning of the existence of this pack, decides that this
isn't what he intended for vampyr to evolve into, and comes to town to clean
house.

2009-09-15 Thread Adrianne Brennan
A friend and I started a Masochists' Book Club where we began plowing
through the series together cause as you know, misery loves company.
We wanted to see if they were truly as horrible as people claimed.

They were. And then some.

>From our adventures came the phrase "sparkly chagrin", coined from Meyer's
over-fondness for the word chagrin and her sparkly, sparkly vampires.

Oh holy hell.

Anyhow, we're on Eclipse and it's just...painful, so painful. I've barely
made it a quarter of the way through the book. I try drinking beforehand,
but it's no use.

Woe.

Okay. I lied. THIS is my last take on the Kanye West mess:

Kanye West spoiling the "moment" for a white girl is more controversial than
Jack Black exhorting everyone in the audience to "hold hands and pray to
Satan." Only in America.
