I actually have no comment on this--maybe because I'm too busy shuddering at

And while I respect the emergence of the importance of social networking, I

I mean, Palin lied on Facebook about death panels--or worse, she might have

And the conservatives were worried about Obama's nefarious programming of the

Palin emerges as Facebook phenom
Since resigning her post as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin
has essentially gone dark, making almost no public appearances and
successfully avoiding the media outlets that are clamoring to talk to
her.

But that doesn’t mean Palin has been quiet.

Relying
almost exclusively on social media to get her message out, Palin has
managed to carve out her own high-profile place in the national health care
debate, on energy policy and on tort reform.

While
Palin isn’t the only major political figure to try alternative means of
communication to bypass the media, her unique ability to remain in the
headlines while avoiding the spotlight suggests she may be the first to
pull it off successfully.

For several days in August, the national health care debate
turned to focus on so-called “death panels,” in large part because of two
widely-publicized Palin Facebook posts accusing Democratic authors of the House
proposal of creating bureaucratic entities to decide end of life care.

The post was immediately rebuked by Democrats, and even by some
Republicans,
as untrue and irresponsible. But rather than immediately firing back at
her critics when reporters came calling for a response, or issuing a
press release defending her claim, Palin waited five days to post her
response on Facebook.

The post, simply titled
“concerning the ‘death panels,’” went up shortly before midnight on a
Wednesday night. By late Thursday morning, a write up of her statement
was on the homepage of dozens of national and local newspapers. The
post also quickly became one of the most mentioned topics within the
political blogosphere.

“I can’t answer what her strategy is, but I can say that it’s
working,” said GOP strategist Mary Matalin. “A large issue of why this works is
that she has been so demonized and made fun of by the mainstream press.”

With more than 850,000 “friends” following her every statement
closely on Facebook, Palin trails only President Barack Obama as the most
popular politician on the site. And when Palin ended her Twitter feed after
resigning as governor, close to 140,000 people were following her—again, second
only to Obama.

“It’s
the most passive form of communication there is, it’s only effective if
people are dying to go to your Facebook page,” noted Marjorie
Dannenfelser, the president of the Susan B. Anthony List, an
organization designed to advance pro-life women in politics, and
co-founder of Team Sarah, a network of Palin supporters. “She’s got
this quality that Howard Dean had in terms of the completely organic liberal
movement he tapped into.”

Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer,
a media strategist who does not count himself as a Palin supporter,
said the former Alaska governor’s style and appeal lends itself to the
online medium.

I think a lot of it has to do with the republicans using the
distrust of the media to their advantage. It is something that has been gaining
momentum since regan was in office. He would make a sly comment or gesture as

WTF??? Are they passing out crack at these townhall meetings or what?

Not to wear this out but I don't think District 9 was racist because the
Nigerian issue crosses color lines. It's not fair to but as other folks have
stated the perception is a common one in South Africa. I think nearly all of

Back to the subject at hand. I agree with Martin, a lot of people can't get

BTW that is no endorsement for Heroes. It's gotten really pedestrian and like
others have said Sylar is the best thing about the show.

I think they need to read more comics so they can "borrow" better plot lines.
Although it looks like the writers decided to throw in a little Carnivale vibe
this season.

My old Tivo box died so I had to swap it out for a different box in another
room during the show so I didn't see the entire episode. What I saw still
suffered from the problems they've always had. Too much Hiro and Ando, Claire
being Claire, killing off one big bad to establish the next one, etc.

I'll rewatch the episode on G4 and see if my initial take was off but for now
I've taken it off my DVR schedule.

I think a lot of it has to do with the republicans using the distrust of the
media to their advantage. It is something that has been gaining momentum since
regan was in office. He would make a sly comment or gesture as if it were an
inside joke. Now we have the same thing going on and it is gaining momentum. I
was just listening to the radio and they said in a recent poll that 15% of
republicans actually believe that Obama is the anti-christ. WTF??? Are they

Palin emerges as Facebook phenom

Since resigning her post as governor of Alaska , Sarah Palin has essentially
gone dark, making almost no public appearances and successfully avoiding the
media outlets that are clamoring to talk to her.

But that doesn’t mean Palin has been quiet.

Relying almost exclusively on social media to get her message out, Palin has
managed to carve out her own high-profile place in the national health care
debate, on energy policy and on tort reform .

While Palin isn’t the only major political figure to try alternative means of
communication to bypass the media, her unique ability to remain in the
headlines while avoiding the spotlight suggests she may be the first to pull it
off successfully.

For several days in August, the national health care debate turned to focus on
so-called “death panels,” in large part because of two widely-publicized Palin
Facebook posts accusing Democratic authors of the House proposal of creating
bureaucratic entities to decide end of life care .

The post was immediately rebuked by Democrats, and even by some Republicans ,
as untrue and irresponsible. But rather than immediately firing back at her
critics when reporters came calling for a response, or issuing a press release
defending her claim, Palin waited five days to post her response on Facebook.

The post, simply titled “concerning the ‘death panels,’” went up shortly before
midnight on a Wednesday night. By late Thursday morning, a write up of her
statement was on the homepage of dozens of national and local newspapers. The
post also quickly became one of the most mentioned topics within the political
blogosphere.

“I can’t answer what her strategy is, but I can say that it’s working,” said
GOP strategist Mary Matalin . “A large issue of why this works is that she has
been so demonized and made fun of by the mainstream press.”

With more than 850,000 “friends” following her every statement closely on
Facebook , Palin trails only President Barack Obama as the most popular
politician on the site. And when Palin ended her Twitter feed after resigning
as governor, close to 140,000 people were following her—again, second only to
Obama.

“It’s the most passive form of communication there is, it’s only effective if
people are dying to go to your Facebook page,” noted Marjorie Dannenfelser, the

say it was okay, better than the abbreviated season two, but nowhere nearly as

Miller Wants Rosario Dawson For "Martha Washington"

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/notyetamovie/news/?a=8893

Dave Gibbons has told Digital Spy that Frank Miller's favorite actress to play
Ms. Washington is the phenomenally hot Rosario Dawson..
Gibbons, who worked on the graphic novel series with comics writer and
filmmaker Frank Miller, told DS that Dawson would be an ideal actress for the
eponymous character, a woman who enlists in a reinvented version of the US Army.

"I know a great favorite of Frank Miller's is Rosario Dawson, who was in Sin
City and has been in some other things," Gibbons said.

"Her name is not seriously in anybody's frame but I do think that it would be a
wonderful part for an actress because she is a very strong character."

Gibbons added that he and Miller have been too "busy with other stuff" to
develop the Martha Washington movie further. But the pair is eager to explore
the character on screen.

"Frank and I have been in love with Martha since we first created her and I'd
like to think that maybe movie-goers would be as well," he said.

Martha Washington first appeared in the four-issue comic book series Give Me
Liberty, published in 1990 by Dark Horse Comics, and written by Frank Miller.

Not quite. Mike Epps made about 2/3 of the way through the movie. He was hiding
the zombie bite that eventually lead to his death. So he lasted through 1 and
2/3 Resident Evils. Oded Fehr had pretty much the same fate although he lasted
a little longer.

Ashanti did die fairly early though.

[scifinoir2] Re: Boris Kodjoe Cast in'Resident Evil 4: Afterlife'

2009-09-22 Thread B Smith
I thought the last one, Resident Evil: Extinction, was pleasantly entertaining.
Russell Mulcahy brought a sense of visual flair to the movie and moving the
action away from the city was a good choice.

[scifinoir2] OT: VIRUS ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2009-09-22 Thread Martin Baxter

Just had this from a friend. SERIOUS STUFF...

Emails
with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being sent, and the
moment that you open these emails your computer will crash and you
will not be able to fix it.

   1.)
If you get an e-mail along the lines of 'Osama Bin Laden Captured' or
'Osama Hanged', don't open the Attachment

This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the
globe, but mainly in the US and Israel.

2.) You should be alert during the next few days:

Do not open any message with an attached file called 'Invitation,'
regardless of who sent it.
It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which 'burns' the whole
hard disc C of your computer
This
virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in
his/her contact list; that is why you should send this E-mail to all
 your contacts.If
you receive e-mail titled 'invitation', even though sent by a friend,
do not open it. Shut down your computer immediately. This
is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever.

This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no
repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys
the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is
kept.

RE: [scifinoir2] "Heroes" Returns--Does Anyone Care?

2009-09-22 Thread Martin Baxter

Honestly, that when I started phasing in and out of the show. Heck, maybe he's
got a side I'm not aware of. He (Masi Oka) was on "Today" yesterday, talking up
the show. I admit that I wasn't really paying his words mind, so I ended up
catching a piece of something that sounded about like his character having a
fatal disease this season. Anybody know more on this?

I watched it last night or tried to due to the
weather. My only problem in the show is there is no other enemy then Sylar. To
me it makes it real boring when you are only dealing with him. From the looks
of
it he can't be killed he can't be stop so then all he really needs to do is
kill
everyone one by one. Also don't get me wrong, I like Claire. I think she is
great and all but lets get real. Get her out of school or college because she
is
never going to stop trying to kill herself to see how far she can go. Perhaps
what needs to happen is someone needs to help Hero got back in time, kill baby
Sylar and that would solve a host of problems. I think the guy that plays him
is
cute but for me it is time to move on. Also one more thing, Peter you are

I have to admit, I missed all of last season. A lot of the buzz I heard about
it from all over the place, though, was that "Heroes" wasn't very good. Some
say
it was okay, better than the abbreviated season two, but nowhere nearly as good

What do y'all say? Anyone here still faithfully watching? If so, what are
your thoughts on the show to date?

2009-09-22 Thread Kelwyn
Actually, I think she is wrong for the part, too. But then again, I thought
Tom Cruise was all wrong to play the Vampire Lestat (too short and too
brunette) and that Hugh Jackman was all wrong to play Wolverine (too lean, too
tall and too Australian). In both cases, I was wrong.

2009-09-22 Thread Mr. Worf
We discussed this in a science class at school. The theory is that because
of evolution the human body lost its ability to produce certain things like
minerals and vitamins over time. For example, the human body lost its
ability to produce vitamin c because our ancestors ate a lot of fruit over
time because of hunting and gathering. Fruit was easy to find and often in
abundance in some areas.

Over time our bodies have changed because of the changes in our diets. They
say Americans eat only a small amount of dietary fiber (and veggies) which
can contribute to digestive track and heart problems.

I watched it last night or tried to due to the weather. My only problem in the
show is there is no other enemy then Sylar. To me it makes it real boring when
you are only dealing with him. From the looks of it he can't be killed he can't
be stop so then all he really needs to do is kill everyone one by one. Also
don't get me wrong, I like Claire. I think she is great and all but lets get
real. Get her out of school or college because she is never going to stop
trying to kill herself to see how far she can go. Perhaps what needs to happen
is someone needs to help Hero got back in time, kill baby Sylar and that would
solve a host of problems. I think the guy that plays him is cute but for me it
is time to move on. Also one more thing, Peter you are hero...stop fighting it.

I have to admit, I missed all of last season. A lot of the buzz I heard about
it from all over the place, though, was that "Heroes" wasn't very good. Some
say it was okay, better than the abbreviated season two, but nowhere nearly as
good as the debut season. Others--and that's a lot of folks--have said it's
just no longer a good show at all.

What do y'all say? Anyone here still faithfully watching? If so, what are your
thoughts on the show to date?

And that's the scary side of the Information Age. Even the Nutjobs and the

WTF??? Are they
passing out crack at these townhall meetings or what?

[scifinoir2] FlashForward on Thursday Anyone??

2009-09-22 Thread Tracey de Morsella
Is anyone planning on checking out FlashForward on Thursday? Anyone read
the book?

http://scifiwire.com/2009/06/we-saw-the-pilot-heres-wh.php

We saw the pilot, and here's why we think you're going to like FlashForward

We got an early look at ABC's upcoming sci-fi series FlashForward on
Wednesday night at Disney/ABC's mothership in beautiful downtown Burbank,
and while we can't give you a proper review, we can tell you this:

Watch it.

We were asked not to divulge any spoilery details or to tell you much about
what we saw-which was the one-hour pilot episode-but we can tell you what
it's not.

It's not Lost, though it has elements of that show: a high-concept sci-fi
premise, told intimately through the lives (present and future) of about 10
main characters, as well as a deep, abiding mystery that will be unraveled
over the course of the first season and subsequent seasons right up to the
last minute.

It's not The X-Files, though it has an FBI agent (Joseph Fiennes) at its
heart and a procedural element to its storylines, with potential criminals
and other bad guys and creepy weirdness here and there.

It's not ER, Fringe, Heroes or any other hit drama, though it shares
elements with all of those shows, including a main character who's a
surgeon, weird science and people who may or may not have access to strange
visions.

No, it's that rare thing in television: something completely new. And, at
least judging by the big-screen Blu-ray version we saw, it will look
absolutely gorgeous, not to say epic, for a TV show.

Based on the novel by Canadian SF author Robert J. Sawyer, FlashForward (not
Flash Forward) begins when every person on Earth blacks out for 2 minutes
and 17 seconds, during which time each has a vision of his or her future six
months from now.

"There have been comparisons to Lost, ... [that the show is] a Lost
replacement," executive producer David S. Goyer told an audience on
Wednesday. "[But] it was written as a spec and originally was even
anticipated to be an HBO show. So it wasn't written at all for ABC or to be
a Lost replacement. And I think the comparisons are accurate in that we also
have a very large cast and are telling a very big, cinematic, ambitious
story, but I think once you see the pilot ... that's where the similarities
end."

Goyer and show runner Marc Guggenheim are big TV fans themselves and
promised that they have a plan for the show that will play out in season one
and then in subsequent seasons in a way that is deliberate and not vamping.
Seriously.

For one thing-and this is a spoiler we can reveal-the first season is
designed to reach a kind of climax on the very real date of April 29, 2010.
There's no getting around it.

So what happens if the show does get picked up for a second season?

"Well, obviously, we're not going to tell you that right now," Goyer says
with mock exasperation. "You know? But I will say that at the end of the
first season, the promise of the first season is all the glimpses of the
future that you've seen of our series regulars, that we've teased, we will
know whether those particular futures have come to pass or not.

"In terms of what happens next, we're not going to tell you; that's part of
the fun," Goyer added. "And part of the fun in the breaking of the stories
is also subverting expectations. Because you plant this big flag saying,
'OK, April 29, six months from now.' I think it's natural for the audience
to assume that we're just going to vamp until episodes 20 and 21, and then a
bunch of s--t's going to happen. But-f--k you guys-by the end, it will
become evident. ... We've already ... finished the first seven episodes, and
it will become crystal clear by the end of those seven episodes that that's
not what we're doing. And ... we're never going to lie to the audience.
We're going to play by the rules. ... But what we'll tell you in the pilot
is, you haven't seen all the chess pieces yet, and you don't know what all
the rules are."

FlashForward debuts Sept. 24 and will air Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Goyer
and Guggenheim also promise they'll preview the show at this year's
Comic-Con International in San Diego.
