OK. You seem in the know, what is Avery Brooks Story. I hear he still does
some theatre, but not as much as you would think.

2010-01-10 Thread Tracey de Morsella
You have just confirmed my brief experiences being up close and personal with
wind farms.I think they are kind of whimsical.

They are doing a lot of solar farms out near you. I mostly know as a result of
tracking new projects and funding. Have you seen anything yet.

In the bay area (you probably know about them) there is a large wind farm with
50 or 100ft tall windmills with huge blades. You can drive up to them and get
close to them. Even when you are near 20 or so of them you barely hear them.
Its just a pleasant woosh / mechanical sound. You hear more noise from the
freeway. A few miles from me is a windmill that is connected to someone's house
with a 6ft blade span. It spins at a higher rate so the pitch is higher. The
higher pitch would make it harder to hear across the street from it.

If you are out in the middle of nowhere and there is little to no ambient sound
at night then I guess they would be considered loud. But if you are nearly a
mile away from them you probably wouldn't hear them at all.

I like the solar farms that they are doing in Spain. (focused light to a tower

I will check out the articles. One thing that I thought was odd was that the
owner of the windmill company said that there was a client that was having
problems from his neighbors although he had 3500 acres of land around him. That
made me automatically think that the people that were protesting were lying.
Audible sound waves wouldn't travel that far, and they wouldn't be able to hear

Most wind energy companies study the bird flight patterns and do not build

Those people are worked up by the same forces that say Obama is a communities,
that minorities are at the route of the financial crisis, that Saddam was buds
with Osama. You get the picture. Almost every form of alternative energy
probably has issues with them, but not the talking points that are being pushed
to the public.

Regarding the noise, from a personal perspective, I do not believe it. When we
returned from living in Mexico to Washington State, we drove by scores of Wind
Farms (very close), I did not get a sense of any noise issues.

The bird issue is what I have heard is the major issue and they seem to be
addressing it head on. A few weeks ago, I heard that they decided to hold up
the set up of a wind farm in Texas because the birds flight patterns are all
along the same path as the best wind.I’ve heard less issues with wind than
any other viable form of renewable energy.

I live, eat and breath stuff and as far as I can tell, it is all smoke and
mirrors trumped up by the right wing and their friends at Exxon Mobil

  NOT SAFE FOR WORK

AEE 2010: True Companion Debuts Sex Robot Roxxxy

Men have often dreamed it, but it hasn’t become a reality until today: the sex
robot. Developed by Douglas Hines of True Companion, an electrical engineer and
computer scientist who formerly worked in the artificial intelligence lab at
AT&T Bell Laboratories. Roxxxy, the sexy bot, is a completely anatomically
correct and customizable companion (from features to hair color) that exhibits
different personalities and responds to touch.

Depending on your mood, you can assign the robot different personalities such
as Frigid Farrah or Mature Martha, who will respond differently based on the
personality you choose. For example, if you hold Mature Martha’s hand, she may
say “I love holding hands,” whereas if you touch Frigid Farrah she may say
“What are you going to do with that hand?”

The coolest part about the robot is that you can build your own custom
personality based on your preference or tweak an existing personality. Once
members of the site develop a personality that they really like, they can share
it with your friends on True Companion’s website. The website sync also makes
the robot compatible for updates and new features or sexy quirks such as a
robot that responds to a S&M safety word. More like a social networking site,
the site will have a monthly fee.

The 2 1/2 year project was estimated to cost around 1 million dollars and the
robot itself will cost from $7,000 to $9,000 depending on the level of
customization you choose. New robots are in the works that will build upon this
internal computing model and incorporate more movement. The male version,
Rocky, available as a gay robot or a heterosexual robot is currently being
developed.

True Companion claims that the robot isn’t solely used for sex but is rather a
life partner or mate for those who can’t find or don’t want the real thing.
According to True Companion’s Web site, she “can carry on a discussion and
expresses her love to you and be your loving friend. She can talk to you,
listen to you and feel your touch.” Well, Roxxxy certainly won’t make you put
the seat down.

[scifinoir2] ZetaTalk: GLP Live [1-9-10]

2010-01-10 Thread nathaniel x vance
ZetaTalk: GLP Live [1-9-10]
Resigning chiefs, Distilling water, Retiring Congressmen, Armageddon week, STS
engineering, Weather predictions, Global economy, Mind control, European
safety, 7 on 1-10 scale, Contactee dreams, Distress Calls, Cursed objects, Dark

*
Excerpts:
[Questioner]  Armageddon week on the history channel is pretty edgy in terms of
its message and content re a "pole shift magnitude disaster". Obviously the
pole shift was not called out but fairly dramatic content was presented. 1) is
this type of show effective in making people aware? And 2) how do those that
put these shows on avoid the wrath of TPTB that still want all possibility of a
shift like disaster hidden from the common man?
-
[Zeta Response]   History Channel need not fear reprisals from the Obama
administration, which is encouraging more open discussion on these types of
possibilities. Under Bush, there was a lot of repression and pointed national
security directives, which were withdrawn when Obama took office. There is a
type of test being done, wherein public reaction is gauged, and then the
program is reset to be more pointed or less, depending upon reaction. There are
people who listen in during café and bar conversations, and others who monitor
email for key words to find those email discussing the show. They are learning
what we have stated, that the common man is not the element that will panic. It
is those in control, the establishment, who panic because they fear being
called to account on their lies, and fear the common man making demands upon
them.
*
[Questioner]  Here in Europe we experienced severe weather conditions during
past weeks: at first a warm October/November, then suddenly a cold and snowy
December (it snowed and was very cold in areas that weren't used to that and
even where I live, which is a flat land), then at the beginning of January we
experienced heavy rain and lots of areas flooded. Still the situation is
difficult for some regions and now metereologists expect the weather to become
cold and snowy again. Do you expect this winter to slowly get better before
spring arrives?
-
[Zeta Response]   We are periodically asked about the weather, though we have
repeatedly stated that our predictions in 1995, when ZetaTalk first began, will
hold. We predicted increasing drought and deluge, switching about, becoming
more intractable and this occurred. We predicted temperature swings, and this
occurred. We predicted that the seasons would begin to blend into each other,
though this has not yet occurred to meet our prediction, though it will. We
predicted snow in summer and this has occurred. We predicted crop shortages
caused by all these weather extremes and this is no longer denied by the
authorities. We predicted in January of 2009 that the northern hemisphere would
have colder then normal weather because of the push away the N Pole experiences
during the Earth wobble, and this has occurred. We also recently stated that a
prediction for colder then normal weather did not mean a steady state, as
swings are to be expected, in line
with our earlier prediction that the seasons would blend. Thus, you should
expect more cold and storms, but also unexpectedly warm weather!
*
[Questioner]  If Ahmadinejad is so STO, why is Iran in the throes of such
massive civil unrest, with the rallying cry on the streets "death to the
dictator"? If he won the election fair and square, why did the clerics see fit
to commit voter fraud, unless they were simply fearful STS hiding behind this
puppet of theirs?
_
[Zeta Response]   As with the case of Obama, who is supposed to accomplish
miracles, pass laws bypassing Congress, and dictating to the Judicial system
what judgements they make in the process if necessary, this is narrow and
childish thinking. Obama can only execute what laws the congress enacts, and
cannot dictate. Iran's president Ahmadinejad likewise is limited in what he can
do. Both leaders attempt to work within the restrictions, to accomplish as much
good as is possible, given the situation.
*
[Questioner]  Is it possible to be STO and still scorn any warning about the
poleshift? Even if disbelieving, wouldn't an STO person at least consider it or
avoid getting angry at the messenger?
-
[Zeta Response]   There is no incompatibility, as to acknowledge the coming
changes requires courage as well as caring, and simply being Service-to-Other,
caring about others as often as the self, does not mean the entity has courage.
Courage is required not only on the soul level, but on the human level, so
there may be discordance there. The soul is likely to be fu

They have had the opportunity to really challenge that line of thinking. For
a while there they seemed very permissive, but in the last few years they
have gotten off on the wrong track. Censorship, racism, homophobia etc. Sort
of like they were influenced by Rush Limbaugh or something.

Astronomers on Verge of Finding Habitable WorldsThe discovery of an Earth-like,
extrasolar planet could happen sooner than you think.

searching, the telescope would find it.

Astronomers
say they are on the verge of finding planets like Earth orbiting other
stars, a key step in determining if we are alone in the universe.

A top NASA official and other leading scientists say that within four or five
years they should discover the first Earth-like planet
where life could develop, or may have already. A planet close to the
size of Earth could even be found sometime this year if preliminary
hints from a new space telescope pan out.

At the annual American Astronomical Society conference this week,
each discovery involving so-called "exoplanets" -- those outside our
solar system -- pointed to the same conclusion: Quiet planets like Earth where
life could develop probably are plentiful, despite a violent universe of
exploding stars, crushing black holes and colliding galaxies.

NASA's new Kepler telescope and a wealth of new research from the
suddenly hot and competitive exoplanet field generated noticeable buzz
at the convention. Scientists are talking about being at "an incredible
special place in history" and closer to answering a question that has
dogged humanity since the beginning of civilization.

"The fundamental question is: Are we alone? For the first time,
there's an optimism that sometime in our lifetimes we're going to get
to the bottom of that," said Simon "Pete" Worden, an astronomer who
heads NASA's Ames Research Center. "If I were a betting man, which I
am, I would bet we're not alone."

Even the Roman Catholic Church has held scientific conferences about the
prospect of extraterrestrial life, including a meeting last November.

"These are big questions that reflect upon the meaning of the human
race in the universe," the director of the Vatican Observatory, the
Rev. Jose Funes, said Wednesday in an interview at this week's
conference.

Worden told The Associated Press: "I would certainly expect in the
next four or five years we'd have an Earth-sized planet in the
habitable zone."

This may be "Lost's" final season, but that doesn't mean ABC's
parent company Walt Disney is giving up on the franchise. According to
Movieline, a source within the Mouse House says a
"Lost" ride is one of several attractions being workshopped at Walt
Disney Imagineering for placement at one of the studio's theme parks.

According to the report, the "Lost " attraction would be a
motion-based dark ride featuring Kuka arm technology, a more mobile innovation
that Universal is using for its own "Harry Potter" theme park.
Kuka currently sits two riders and moves them through the air while they are
covered with a projection screen similar to Epcot Center's "Mission:
SPACE." No word on what storyline would be used or if cast members
would be involved in the ride.

Walt Disney World's Disney's Hollywood Studios could use a high profile
attraction like the "Lost" ride to attract more visitors, but its
unclear whether such an attraction would be more appropriate to Disneyland or
the ever-retooled California Adventure on the West Coast.

place in 2054 in Paris, and deals with a cop trying to uncover who kidnapped a
female scientist. The movie is rotoscoped, in black-and-white, and has a very
funky look, kind of like elements of "Sin City", "The Waking Life", and an old
Felix the Cat (black and white) cartoon combined with a BladeRunner
sensibility. Not sure if I like it yet, but it's very interesting. Daniel Craig
is one of the actors. Took six years to make, but only cost bout fifteen
million bucks. Looks cool with the sound off.

Anyone ever seen it?

If there were an Earth-like body in the area Kepler is
searching, the telescope would find it.

Astronomers
say they are on the verge of finding planets like Earth orbiting other
stars, a key step in determining if we are alone in the universe.

Keith, of the three movies you mention in your alst paragraph, I haven't seen
the first, "This Waking Life". "The Polar Express", frankly, almost gave me
nightmares, because it was just plain creepy to me. (And I'm the guy who yawned
through all three of the "Saw" movies I was forced to watch by friends.)
"Beowulf" has been running regularly on the Showtime networks for the better
part of the month. It's alright. A few neat action scenes, wrapped around a
plot so predictable that it's ridiculous.

I'll look out for it. My very first exposure to rotoscoping was with the film
"Heavy Metal". I'm sure you've seen it? Loosely based on the magazine, a series
of different animated, but equally gorgeous vignettes dealing with people
affected by a green orb that is "...the sum of alll evila glowing jewel
they must possess". If you remember the movie, you remember the last segment
about Tarna, the Tarakian who had to fight the Orb in the future. They used a
real live model and rotoscoped her for Tarna. That's why the scene when she
gets the magical sword look so realistic.

Speaking of rotoscoped films and films that try to blur the line between
animation/real life, have you seen "This Waking Life", "Polar Express", or
"Beowulf"? Did you like any of those? I haven't seen any of them. Have tried to
watch "Polar Express", but the famous "dead eyes" (the uncanny valley, is it?)
turned me off.

>From Wikipedia

The film combines live action footage with computer animation, It is notable as
being one of the first major films (along with Able Edwards, Casshern and Sky
Captain and the World of Tomorrow) to be shot entirely on a "digital backlot",
blending live actors with computer generated surroundings. Immortel goes one
step further than those films, however, in also having live actors interacting
with semi photo-realistic CGI "humans" (as opposed to films such as Star Wars
Episode I: The Phantom Menace and The Lord of the Rings film trilogy which
featured fantasy creatures).

Plot summary from IMDB
This movie is set in the year 2095, hence the presence of mutant humans and
extraterrestrials. The main character is known as Jill. She is not human. When
she is discovered by Dr. Elma Turner she is diagnosed as being the most
interesting genetic test subject Turner has ever come across. Her organs are
not in the right place, she has no memory and she appears, biologically to be
only three months old. Turner gives her a break, gives her an identity card and
a place to stay, in exchange for being her guinea-pig to work on and discover
more about. Nicopol is a frozen prisoner who is due to be released a year after
the film is set. There is a problem in the prisoner ward and several are thrown
down to grow (dying in the process), including Nicopol (but only his leg).
There is a lot more to this story but I can't disclose it in this summary, I

And I saw it last month, one of the first things I caught after DirecTV

I'm working at home today (twenty degrees farenheit here in Atlanta, with snow
and ice last night that trapped me inside) and turned on the tube to keep me
occupied. After hours of ESPN pontification, I decided to scroll the dial, and
came across an odd-looking movie on IFC. It's called "Renaissance". It takes
place in 2054 in Paris, and deals with a cop trying to uncover who kidnapped a
female scientist.

I missed it. They should always show movies more than once just for this
very reason!!

I picked up Immortel on DVD because is was pretty good and -- likewise -- I
don't like to rely on being able to catch obscure titles like that on TV again.
(Unlike movies such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Indpendence

Oddly enough, I had a friend from down there, up until a year and change ago.
During the span of our friendship, I was getting all sorts of derogatory
comments about Aussies from all quarters, and vehemently defending the country,
in his name. Since he proved himself to be an a$$hole of the first order and I
put him down, I've begun to see the other side of the card. They're not a PC
nation, and they just don't get it, which is strange as hell, considering how
they treated the First People for almost three centuries.

A 6.5 on the west coast is just enough to get someone's attention but not do
any real damage. There were much bigger quakes in the middle east and in
China last year. If it were on the east coast it would have leveled NYC.

[scifinoir2] What or Who will Force West Out of Middle East and When?

2010-01-10 Thread nathaniel x vance
Dear Group,
Word is that by GOD  ONE way or the OTHER, the mighty warmongering West is
going to be ignominiously forced out of  the Oil RICH Middle East entirely most
likely before or near the end of 2012 as calamity after calamity after calamity
will make saving the Western homelands a more urgent priority!

January 10, 2010
CALIFORNIA - A powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of
northern California. The quake occurred 35 kilometres west of Ferndale and 360
kilometres northwest of Sacramento, at a depth of 16 kilometres. The temblor
hit at 4:27 pm (0027 GMT) and was followed by a series of four aftershocks
measuring 3.7, 3.8, 3.5 and 3.6. Windows broke or popped out of storefronts in
Ferndale. Local media also reported a brief powercut, ruptured gas lines and
there were initial reports of damage to Ferndale's city hall building. The
initial jolt was felt as far away as San Francisco.

*

The earthquake struck Eureka Saturday, leaving much of the city without power
and police scanners buzzing with reports of damage and injuries. The quake,
which lasted for around 30 seconds, had power poles waving back and forth along
Eureka streets and brought panicked residents out of their homes. The Bayshore
Mall, as of 5:30 p.m., had been closed off to customers and employees. It was
unclear how many people were injured there, but one employee reported that
several people were picked up by ambulances. Employees also reported light
fixtures falling out of the ceiling and floor tiles popping up off the ground.
Another employee reported seeing chunks of the ceiling fall onto customers.

*

FLORIDA - The US cold snap has struck the famously warm southern state of
Florida, damaging key citrus crops and shocking both residents and tourists.
Iguanas were seen falling from trees in southern Florida while manatees - or
sea cows - congregated in warmer waters outside power plants. Temperatures have
fallen to around 0C, far below normal levels in the state. Although
temperatures in the southern state were nowhere near as brutal as in the
northern US states which were blighted by snow drifts and arctic winds, the
sudden dip was "a strange situation". Farmers and fruit-growers are worried
that colder temperatures this weekend will damage more of their crop. Already
some say that as much as 10% of their harvested oranges and lemons have been
damaged by the formation of ice crystals. Concerns over the potential damage to
orange crops has pushed up frozen concentrated orange juice futures in New
York, which hit their highest levels in almost two years.

2010-01-10 Thread Mr. Worf
This is a true thing, and that is the problem with Hollywood. They could be
more proactive and push American society in a better direction but that
would take a spine.

I started reading the racism and sexism in Hollywood article but had to
stop. I was having a flashback to when I had to deal with a similar
situation at my first job. They hired a racist as VP of marketing. They
would sit around after work and tell racist jokes from the 101 racist joke
book.

I was told by an Urban League advisor to use my nickname when I was looking for
my first Engineering job. She went more down the line of pronunciation.
Interviewers are uneasy about interviewing someone with a name that doesn't
have a clear pronunciation. I thought about adding a phonetic subscript to the
resume but ended up just using my nickname which I still do to this day.

A 2004 study showed that resumes with recognizably African-American names were
twice as likely to be ignored as other resumes. Black job seekers with advanced
degrees have reported removing any indication of race from their resume just to
get a shot at job. Host Liane Hansen talks to diversity columnist Michelle T.
Johnson of the Kansas City Star about the difficulties.

2010-01-10 Thread Kelwyn

MONTREAL – Canadian police said Friday that it was wrong for one of their
officers to whisk Halle Berry, her model boyfriend and baby through airport
security at Montreal's Trudeau airport.
A constable at the airport decided to let the couple pass a long line after a
spur-of-the-moment request on Monday by Gabriel Aubry, a Quebec model who is
Berry's boyfriend and father of her 22-month-old daughter, Nahla.

An embarrassed Montreal police force issued a directive to its officers Friday,
urging them to avoid a repeat of the episode. The officer involved will not be
reprimanded and the police airport unit will institute stricter rules for the
future, Cacchione added.

The White House has not said when President Barack Obama's State of the Union
address will be delivered. It did say, however, that it will not be during the
three-hour season premiere of the final season of "Lost," which will be
broadcast on ABC on Feb. 2.

2010-01-10 Thread Kelwyn

The Bechdel Test

1) there are at least two named female characters, who

2) talk to each other about

3) something other than a man.

So simple, and yet as you go through all your favorite movies (and most of your
favorite TV shows, though there's a little more variety in TV), you find very
few movies pass this test.

My scripts had multiple women with names. Talking to each other. About
something other than men. That, they explained nervously, was not okay.

"Clash of the Titans" was the "Avatar" of my sane and sober youth. Loved the
