Not to mention what he did to help end Apartheid in South Africa. Remember
the
album 'From South Africa to South Carolina?' I believe that was it...And
when HE
wrote Johanessburg, it was real!

It could be worse. He could be with Jimi Hendrix and Janice Joplin...

Gil is the Man!! I hear, though, that the last few years his drug habit's
kicked into overdrive. Indeed, I a guy I know who lives in NY told me he saw
Heron about six years ago trying to score drugs on the street. Sad, sad,
waste of talent. I've attended two of his concerts here in Atlanta, and it
was a transcendent experience. When he'd caress those piano keys and sing
"The Other Side" or "Think I'm Gonna Give Her a Call"--wow! And of course
the crowd was roused by "Johannesburg".
Saddest of all to me is that the vast majority of Black folks I talk to have
never even *heard* of Gil. Or , if they have, they have no concept of who he
is and what he's done for music.

RE: [scifinoir2] REALLY GOOD MUSIC SITE!!!!!

2007-03-29 Thread KeithBJohnson
And let's not forget the early days of music video when it was so fun and
original and exciting and not yet over produced! True, MTV and later, VH-1
might have given short shrift to black videos in the early days. But remember
when you'd be mesmerized by just about every video that came on, whether it was
Cindy Lauper jumping around with that crazy hair singing "Girls Just Want to
Have Fun", or the J. Giles' Band singing "Centerfold"? Or how about ZZ Top's
pop crossover success with the "She's Got Legs" and that cool car?

-- Original message --

Yeah, and I still love the guitar work on "Learn How to Live". Do you recall
Aldo Nova? He had a minor rock hit "Life is Just a Fantasy", and an album that
was full of over-produced screeching-loud songs that perfectly satisfied my
tastes at that time. I used to play his album so loud my apartment walls
literally vibrated in resonance. Man those were the days! From about seventh
grade to my freshman year in college, I was seriously into rock: classic rock,
album rock, glam rock, heavy metal--all its permutations and descriptions. From
Rush (still love 'em!) to LoverBoy, FleetWood Mac to Blue Oyster Cult, Yes to
ELO (one of my fav groups ever!) I couldn't get enough. I remember jamming to
Queen's "The Game" along with the drug-smoking white kids at my school, singing
"Babe" and "Mr. Roboto" along with Styx, admiring the hell out of the ELO "Out
of the Blue" album cover and playing "Sweet Talking Woman" over and over and
over, thinking how "deep" Foreigner's "Juke Box Hero" was wit
h its tale of a boy determined to make it, *loving* the weird-but-wonderful
synthesized sounds of The Cars' "Candy-O", getting mellow with Chris Cross'
"Sailing" and "Ride Like the Wind", analyzing "The Wall" ad nauseum--man I
don't know if rock will *ever* be that cool again!

Then they might have my man Gil Scot-Heron, or obscure rockers like Billy
Squire ("The Stroke") or Aldo Nova.

I got this from a very good friend. WOW! I entered an artist I happen to
like who is quite obscure,
And within 2 minutes I had albums and cuts to try! It's well worth checking
out!

It's free, but there is a donation link if you like it enough...

Enjoy!

Ok, I'm sold on Pandora. I just keyed in the group 'Automatic Man' and BAMM!
I'm listening to One n One as I type. Who knew.

My old band covered their music (b4 we all went corporate). Awesome that
Pandora found them so quickly! Awww snap, 'My Pearl' is playing. I'm out.
Where's my bass.

Thanks -jeff.
