A while back somebody (I forget who) tipped me off to a Usenet server which accepted posts to a rather-large number of groups (I'm not ASS-uming the binary ones to be included), but which does NOT open groups for reading! I am looking for a simple DOS program that has two parameters, the name of a ZIP (compressed) file, and the name of a file which might be compressed within that ZIP file, that returns the truth about the latter being contained within the former as the DOS variable "errorlevel". The thinking here is that if a file already exists within the ZIP of the same name as a file I would have added to the ZIP, I could discard the file rather than waste the time of adding it again. My mother, and other women she knows, are into these "Word Finder" paperbacks they have in *AWL* the major chain stores. You know, find the words hidden in an X-by-Y grid of letters, 24 pages or more full of 'em. Well, mother came to me a few days ago and said she wanted to get a "Number Finder" book. Apparently in much the same vein, 'cept what you're trying to find are numbers, or more correct- ly, strings of specific digits. Says she wants to give it to a longtime woman friend for her birthday, around Thanksgiving. "Ookay..." The local chains (CVS, RiteAid, the Marts, et al.) have so far been of minimal help. I was planning to visit the New York City area over the weekend, a place where the hard-to-find in terms of printed materials could be found. Any ideas? -- BOB

Members of my family are of less-than-perfect hearing (the parents specifically), so what I was thinking about today was a program to generate a short, quick, large-type message that fills the computer screen, and then exit when a key is pushed. So, say, I use the run command on the start menu, and enter [name] "some message" and click OK, that sort of thing. Ideas? -- BOB

I am in need of some means to detect when our (one) phone line is being used while any of the family is using the PC, but is not online (we already have Internet Answering Machine and our phone co.'s call forwarding to catch attempts to call us when we =are= on). Very often someone in the family will take the portable phone somewhere out of earshot of the person using the computer, =ergo= he or she is grossly unaware of the true status of the line until Juno, for example, tells them that it could not detect a dial tone.
