SD> L body 2 door vs 4 door Dual Gauge Pillar pod

2004-12-07 Thread Pindell, Timothy
Fellas:
I'm new to >turbo< fwd Dodges. For fun, I recently bought a nice 86
GLHT and I've been looking for gauge pods. I have three gauges that need
a home: EGT, A/F and manifold pressure. What is the difference between
the 2-door and 4-door l-body pods?

Chris I dropped the project years ago due to the fact that 80% of the people

more guys have P-body's on this list that anything else. Good luck.

SD> Coil Pickup

2004-12-07 Thread Newtnicks
A few days ago I described to everyone, my engine just konking out, everyone
said its probably the wires fatiguing that come out of the distributor. I
pulled the old coil and indeed one of the wires was bent, and there was a little
slit in the insulation, with a lot of "play".

I put in the new unit and the car seems better. Before i go on a 30 minute
drive to see if the car is fixed. Is it possible that all this was was a bad
wire w/ a bend, fatigue, slit in the insulation that would cause the car to
just stop running

Hopefully yes!
PLEASE SEND ME YOUR EXPERT OPINIONS AND THANKYOU!!

Re: SD> Coil Pickup

2004-12-07 Thread Marc Medina
Yes, easily. Years ago, I installed a set of headers on my 76 Aspen R/T. We
didn't touch ANYTHING electrical. After getting them all bolted up, I pushed
in the clutch and fired up the car - no problem. Started to let out the
clutch and the engine died. Tried it again, same thing. We hunted for HOURS
trying to figure out what happened. Turned out the ground wire from the body
to the engine was broken inside (inside the insulation where we couldn't
see). With the clutch pedal down, the engine had a ground for the ignition.
When you'd let up the pedal, the ground was lost and the ignition quit. Ever
since then I've made sure to use the braided type of ground wire so you can
always see its condition.
Thanks,
Marc Medina

Hi Keith,

Absolutely. I've had the pickup coil (Hall effect sensor as it is sometimes
called) go bad on my cars a few times. This is sometimes referred to as the
ballast resistor of the turbo dodge generation of cars. One way to reduce
the rate of failure on these is to make sure that the wires are hung up
somewhere so that they don't swing as much during driving. I have mine wire
tied near the dipstick tube so that the wires are well supported with a
little slack. This has helped me out. In addition, the ones you get from
the Dodge dealership seem to have a better reputation than the ones you'll
get from NAPA, etc. This also turned out to be true for me. The down side
of this is that the dealership ones are much more expensive. I have a
number of extras around now (that I haven't had to use, of course :-). Some
of them are new Chrysler units that a fellow list member was selling a
couple years back for reasonably cheap. Some of them are Chrysler units I
pulled out of a junk yard. I have one of the yard units on one of my cars
(forget which one) for years now.

Best of luck. Hope you have this licked!

SD> Idle Oil Pressure Question

2004-12-07 Thread Jarvis
Good Evening,

The car is my '90 Daytona Shelby. The turbo went on me, as I mentioned, and
I am trying to make sure that there are no external causes. I picked up an
oil pressure tester at NAPA.

At idle I get 53psi of pressure. If I rev the engine to something that
sounds like about 4K to me, I get 70psi which drops back down to 53psi when
I go back to idle again. I did this repeatably a few times with both a
reasonably cool (but not cold) engine and reasonably warm (but not real hot)
engine. Same numbers.

The 53psi seems kinda high to me since the FSM seems happy with numbers like
10psi at idle. Is it possible that my Melling oil pump is giving me too
much oil pressure causing problems? Or, at least, are these numbers way out
of whack with what others get?

RE: SD> Idle Oil Pressure Question

2004-12-07 Thread Mullikin, Stefan P
Yep, its 10psi per 1000rpm. What weight oil are you running? What oil
pressure relief spring are you running? Do you have the oil restrictor
in the block? Try reducing the amount of oil going into the oil feed
for the turbo. I think a washer or perhaps a drilled out jet threaded
into the turbo oil feed line adapter should work to limit the oil
pressure to the turbo. Thread the jet in from the backside and use
locktite before going driving with it.

Just go slow and gradually increase the size of the orifice until the
proper pressure spec is reached by placing the oil pressure gauge in
line with the oil feed line to the turbo. You will need to also
determine if the volume of oil is correct as well. I believe the specs
should be available at Garrett's website as they are a somewhat standard
T3 center section.

Or you can swap the oil pump out for a "stock" pump. The width of the
oil pump vanes will tell you if one pumps more oil than the other.

Best Regards,
Stefan

SD> poly trans mount installed

2004-12-07 Thread Johnny Spiva
Everyone,
I got a first off poly tranny mount today and
I installed it into my turbo wagon. It works great
These are being made in full-force now that I approved
the the 2nd prototype. Fits 1984 to 1989 cars.
I will have some ready to go in a couple days BUT
I am taking them to get plated and that will take
2 to 4 days. So I will be shipping these next week.
Finally!I have been working on this project for
almost 2 months. It seems crazy such a simple
thing can take so much time and effert to get done.
You want to know why I haven't made the tranny
mount for the newer (90+) FWD cars. Beacuse I made
the front mount (sells well) and made the passenger
side mount. Everyone wanted the passenger mount.
BUT not to many people are buying it. I have ALOT
of money tied up in something that is not selling so it
makes me very cautious about what projects I take on.
Maybe someday, but not right now.

Re: SD> Idle Oil Pressure Question

2004-12-07 Thread Brian Schulteis
You might try swapping in some 0w-20 oil. Maybe the pressure will come
down to a sane level. Running the really small oil filter these
engines normally came usually helps limit oil pressure too. ;)
Whatever you end up doing, keep us posted, I'm curious which trick
will do the job.

2004-12-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
My issue of Car and Driver came today. In the letters section, I was shocked
to see not one but three letters they printed which defended our Shelby
Dodges!!! The letters were in response to last issue's Dodge Charger article
where Tony Swan took an unnecessary swipe at the 80s Dodge Charger. The
letters were from Sam Fiorani, Tony Eimen, and Greg Thewes. I know Greg, I'm
not sure if the other writers are SDML or SDAC members though. Anyway, it was
nice to see Car and Driver print these letters, usually the only thing they
print about our cars is negative, even though they walk all over their beloved

Re: SD> Project: L body 2 door Dual Gauge Pillar pod (Alternative idea?)

2004-12-07 Thread PentastarTurbo
They dont block your vision2 little humps is hardly blockin vision..
at the right angle, they sit in the A pillars blind spot anyways, so your
not blockin out much at all and its not really worth mentioning..
Ever had a setup like this on a L body 2 door or are ya knockin it before
you try it?
I never had any problems runnin this setup in my GLHS and its actually quite
nice to be able to see how your engine is operating as you drive.
Some may consider it "Import trendy" or whatnot, however I like having the
critical information in my line of site rather than having to look down at the
center counsel for instrumentation.. The second you take your eyes off the
road, your placing not only yours, but other peoples lifes in your hands.

I am trying to work with an established vender on getting these produced..
Im not a buisness man, just a person with common sence that know what he
wants..
Im not tryin to make any money on this, just opening up options for the
people who truely race, tune or just like instrumentation to monitor their
engine.
Once this group buy is complete and these are produced, these will still be
available from them on their site..That way people in the future have
something rather than nothing..
but without the group buys minimum, this will never happen..

I know that the majority of the people are as frugal as I am, however.
ya gadda pay if ya wanna play.. generiac quote, but am I lying?:)
Also there arent very many places to mount a gauge in L body unless you dont
care about your ac/air vents or using a hole saw and drillin into your
dash..
As for the SDAC newsletter, thats an excellent idea!
I suppose if one needs to contact anyone, that would be Barry Goodall for
this?
Anyone have an email address for him? :)

Not only do I talk about these cars, I also work on my own vehicles..
I just got the MP headgasket and ARP head studs installed tonite for the
engine thats intended for the trucklets buildup.. They shoulda done that from
the factory with those head studs.. :) very nice..

I have faith in the SDML community..
Everyones been there for me in the past and this is just one of my ways of
sayin thanks..

It's a tough situation as it seems people are interested in the product,
but they don't actually want to spend money on it. Unfortunately that
seems typical in this enthusiasts group. Some of it may be due to a
lack of spending cash, it might also be a waning interest in the cars

or you can work with an established vendor (whomever that is) to have
them carry the product to fruition and add it to their line.

If you're trying to make this a profitable product for you or your
fledgling company, then you need to ensure you're reaching your market
properly and you can't rely on other people to invest money in something
that you want to market. Has anyone contacted the SDAC newsletter?
Many of the people who get the newsletters aren't on the mailing lists
and are typically the ones that are actively working on the cars rather
than talking about them.

Just my thoughts, take them for what they are worth.

I should have added a link to the auction sorry!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4510708180

If the link doesn't work please search for item #4510708180 or auctions

Subject: 1986 #210 on Ebay

I listed my 86 GLHS on Ebay tonight. I have too many toys and have to
sell something, but I want to keep my Rampage. This GLHS is completely
rust free and is in great shape. If someone on this list buys the car
I'll throw in many extras like an extra set of ground effects, spare
Centurion and many other little items I collected for it in the past
year.

Please pass this link along to anyone interested!
