Well, I wouldn't do any modifications to the stock taillights because I
feel most people that do end up with an unsafe condition (I've almost
hit plenty of people with clear taillights because the red bulbs aren't
bright enough by themselves) To each their own though, just don't
expect me to be too happy when I have to pay for an accident because I
couldn't see your taillights (and yes it would be my fault since I ran
into the back of you, not cool)

Anyway, the later model taillights will bolt up to the older Daytona's.
Just nab the support piece they are bolted to and go to town. I would
only urge you to make sure it all seals properly before calling it good
since a leak there would just be plain annoying :)

Good luck,

Ralph Scott just sent me pics of his 92 Daytona IROC. It has the more
rounded tail lights on it, and he removed something inside to basically
make them "clear outs" with just a red strip at bottom.

I had seen something similar done to 88-90 tail lights (like mine),
where they removes some kind of red lens inside them, leaving the
lightly tinted/clear outer piece there, then they placed some small red
light domes over each bulb to make the "altezza" look. Does anyone have
info on these or pics they can email me?

ALSO... are the 92-93 more rounded rear tails adaptable to my 89, and if
so, how and what other pieces are needed? I think those are awesome.

Thanks,

The one I saw once before (88-90 tails), the guy had went out and bought
3" round red lenses and glued them in the reflector cups OVER the bulbs
so I imagine they were quite red when they lit up. And yes I share your
concern too. I was thinking of doing that afte removing the bigger lens
piece inside.

Those clear tails are just plain ugly. They don`t match anything on the
cars, but people do it anyway.IMO they just make the car cheaper and the resale
value worse. Most dealers at auction consider a car with these as being dogged
out with teenage drivers so the prices are lower. If you`re wanting a change do
something custom like putting in a set of compl;etely different lights from
a 300z or something.

RE SD> Clearing out Daytona tail lights

2004-08-26 Thread Moparmat2000
i personally think the alteza look that people do to the daytona taillights
cheapens the look of their cars. i think it would also be a cop magnet since
you are modifying a DOT legal tail lens from its original DOT approved intent.
but to each their own. i am not into the import look and all the vinyl tape and
poser performance parts stickers that goes with it, and dont forget the
prerequisite 4 sets of driving lamps for the front and fart can on the back.

our cars looked pretty hot when they were new. i really dont think there can
be much style improvement over a stock shelby. mebbe wheels and small things,
or a different color of paint.

i think looking like a nice clean stock turbo car including stock alloy
wheels, and doing all your mods under the hood and to the suspension and braking is
where it all counts. in the end being able to smoke a winged honduh , or a
Z28 with equal ease is what its all about. better to do it with stealth.

The piece the taillights bolts to, basically it's the entire piece that
forms the corners of the rear of the car, including the license plate
area. I don't know if its different between the two styles.

Ah the trouble would be proving it since many times in a rear end
collision, the evidence would be destroyed or damaged beyond use.

Basically, in my state it seems, if you hit someone from behind its your
fault. One of the few common sense "laws" we have.

Rearending somebody with poor (or no) tailights would certainly shift
the percentage of blame. Depending on the state they could consider
clear tailights a violation of the vehicle code which could cause
problems in collecting in a straight rear-end collision.

Okay, okay, you all are right, turning a Daytona into a Honduh is wrong,
but I'm telling you guys I've seen this done once before, they don't
look like ricey altezzas, they kinda look like the same theme the Chevy
berlinetta had in its tails, those were clear but smoked slightly too.
Look, if I don't like them and they come out ghetto, the 88-89 tails are
so very easy to come by out here for cheap. IN fact I have a set on a
junker car. I promise you all I won't go ghetto-tastic uban rice with my
