Re: SD> Daytona convertible

2005-07-01 Thread Ron S.
I remember hearing about convertible kits for Daytonas, although I have
never actually seen one, this looks like it could be one of those kits. The
same company also used to make convertible kits the first generation
RX-7's.. those looked a lot better (IMHO). Back in those days though I
believe was 'cooler' to make your mini-truck into a convertible... since the
shop I worked at did hundreds of mini-tracks, and one RX-7, and no Daytonas.
I believe the rear lid is fiberglass, with a small trunk opening, if
Chrysler had in fact done this the lid would have been considerably wider.
Also Chrysler would have used a glass window as they have with most of their
cars.

An older friend of mine that was into Shelby's when they were new saw a
convertible version of a Chrysler Laser being sold at a Dodge dealership in
central Florida when he was looking for a GLH. It looks nearly identicaI to
the ones in the pictures in the eBay ad.

I believe the story was that there were a number of them sent off to be
altered and they were going to see what kind of feedback they got.
Supposedly a local friend of mine knows someone who has one that he's wanted
to buy for years. Is it a factory "prototype"? I don't think so, nor is it
only 1 of 5. Here's some pretty cool pics he took of it in the mid 1980's.

Re: SD> Daytona Convertible

2005-07-02 Thread David Salamone
> Thanks for posting the links for the pictures.

I scanned the original photos he gave me a while back. Now that I've changed
over to a better web space host it's great to be able to post them online.

> I've been following the thread on turbododge.com. When I saw the pictures
on eBay, for some reason, I just couldn't visualize what the Daytona would
look like with a shiny coat of paint.

Things look so much better when they're fully restored. Or in this case
"new".

> The pictures of the Laser look great. I would just replace the Laser
taillight with Daytona taillights, and install a rear wing on it. It really
looks like it needs a wing back there.

It's an interesting setup. I'd still love to see what an Omni GLH would look
like with a convertible format. Someone should be able to built a fully
functional one by using a VW Rabbit cabriolet parts car. The overall
dimensions are very similar.
