My 2 cars have factory red valve covers. ;-)

Simply put the heat, oil, age etc have made this valve cover appear white.
Go find a Ford engine painted grey (80's up)you'll find parts of
the engine which appear white...

Re: SD Factory white turbo valve covers

2005-01-27 Thread Chad Brown
I haven't really followed this thread that close, nor am I sure why people
care if there were white valve covers from factory. However, I have seen
first hand a white valve cover. It wasn't oxidized, it wasn't painted by
someone else, it was a white valvecover. Looks like it may have been bright
white, but 13 years under heat turned it to an off-white. We ended up
taking the valvecover off and using zip-strip to get the paint off. (We
thought it looked dumb on a blue car)

Valve cover was on an unmollested 91 CS Daytona that was electric blue.
Motor was a high torque 2.5 TI mitsu motor.

Hope that helps someone!

RE: SD Factory white turbo valve covers

2005-01-27 Thread Mullikin, Stefan P
The aluminum alloy reacts with AIR, not light. Depending on the alloy
used, the oxidation may be different. Obviously when Chrysler went to
the later style one-piece seal valve covers they changed the molds and
perhaps the alloy of aluminum used. They obviously changed the coating
used on the covers as it broke down much faster than the older covers.

Look at most of the aluminum alloy wheels where the clear coat is broken
and peeled. The aluminum tends to be cruddy where its reacted with the
air. That's the oxidation.

Maybe we should bring back the intercooler paint thread? At least that
was more interesting to read about...

2005-01-27 Thread Garret Werstiuk
What is so hard to believe that some manifolds were painted white? I had an
88 Pacifica that was 100% stock when I got it and it had a white valve
cover, white under the sticker as well. So you're telling me that somehow an
unpainted valve cover got paint on it or clear coat and that paint/clear
coat turned a silver aluminium v/c to white? I highly doubt that. I have no
doubts that chrysler painted some v/cs white, how about that they never made
an extended wheel base turbo mini factory? anyone else see on Gary donovan's
page that they did just was never documented. I have only seen 2 of these
white V/Cs before every other one I've seen have just been bare aluminium
that were not on factory T2 cars, all you people who are saying oh that
can't happen or they are just faded just settle down and accept that some
of them were painted white.

I think it was P. T. Barnum that said there's a sucker born every minute.
That being said, I will go to the junkyard a buy up all the White valve
covers there and begin selling there rare items for those of you who think
they
exist. The price will be $400 since they are probably 3 times rarer than a
Shelby valve cover. If $400 is too high I will accept cast Shelby valve
covers
as partial payment.

I have been playing with turbo dodges since I was 15 and bought my first '84
SC. In my 17 years of playing with them I have seen the covers you guys are
talking about. They are late model silver covers that have faded from being
inside an engine compartment next to a turbo that gets so hot it glows.
Think
about what you are saying. That would mean Dodge made a white engine
compartment
piece that would show oil leaks. Think of all the warranty work they would
have.

In the pics below I see a faded silver valve cover. If you see a white one,
I
guess you see a white intake manifold too.

Like the guy in the movie As Good as it Gets said, Go sell crazy
somewhere
else. We're all stocked up here.

2005-01-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have only seen 2 of these white V/Cs before every other one I've seen have

I dont think any valve covers were ever bare aluminum. They all had some kind
of coating on them. Be it a black wrinkle finish, or a silver colored
paint/powder coating, they all had a coating. Bare aluminum would oxidize, and
have a white powdery coating on it that wouldn't look very good.

Plus, if there were white valve covers, dont you think the guys who have (a)
worked on these cars when they were new, or (b) owned them since they were new
would have remembered this, or at least heard of it?

Lastly, chrysler had some vendor making these covers. They probably had 1000s
of them sitting around waiting to go on cars. Do you honestly think the vendor
would have accidently painted a few white? No, if there were white ones, there
would be thousands of them, or at least hundreds! But Im sure chrysler got in
the covers, and had someone in the back room with a spray can changing them,
for the latest white hat special car in the spring! Except this time, the
'white hat' was a valve cover instead of a vinyl top!

You guys dont have to like the fact that there were never any white covers
made; you just have to accept it.

Clay
