Re: SD Florida law

2005-05-11 Thread colwell82
One of the first things I noticed was that this list is REALLY into drag
racing, and for me, it's not about racing at all... I like the looks of these
cars, and I like to just drive with them. I may take it to the track when I
feel the car is running perfect and is able to do the best it can do. Sure I've
been known to showboat with friends from time to time, but my fiance' has put
her foot down on that. What worries me about this law is, what happens when
you're driving in a 45 mph zone, and someone pulls out in front of you and does
20 mph? (it happens to you too doesn't it?) You pull around the person to pass,
when it's safe to do so, and the police see it as your racing the person and
pull you over. I'm not so sure I like that idea at all. Maybe if they worded it
so the police can't just pull you over for passing and driving an older car and
being a bit on the younger side, I could put myself behind this more.

just my opinion, and everyone's entitled to their own!

I couldn't agree more! Of course, part of the problem I see as well, is
something that has been discussed earlier in this thread, and that's the
reduction in the number of tracks. The owners of the Nashville Superspeedway
were supposed to be building a new 1/4 mile track at the speedway, and never
have. But at least I still have 3 1/8th mile tracks within 2 hours.
I know it may seem like it's more fun to race on the street for some reason,
but there's really no reason to do it in my book. If you can't control
yourself, you probably shouldn't be driving a fast car. Keep it safe, and keep
it legal.

I for one am in favor of this legislation. I currently live in Alabama,
and I would like to see my state pass just such a law. I live near a
dragstrip out in the county just North of Huntsville (a city of about
375,000).

Every Friday and Saturday night I hear the dragstrip. I don't mind the
noise at all. What I do mind is every wanna-be with a rice car, old
school hot rod, or bike within 50 miles is racing on the long, open
county roads in the area. They are coming from or going to the
dragstrip, tuning, or whatever. There is also a lot of illegal racing
going on. I live near a very busy intersection where three of these
long open roads come together. The med-flight helicopter always lands
right next to my house. It's like they have their own landing pad there
now (I should paint a big H on it). I have had to explain to my
children what all the commotion was about several times. Years ago, I
was a cop in Tucson, Arizona. I helped load a few body bags back then
too.

Don't get me wrong, I love my turbo Dodges. I like to drive fast too.
But I do not race illegally.

Just go to the track. If you go to the track, you are supporting your
hobby, not making it a crime. Get off the streets please, there are too
many 5-ton Expeditions full of cell phone wielding, non-driving sheeple
out there.

Okay, off the soapbox.

Re: SD Florida law

2005-05-11 Thread Dan G
land of the free, more like land of the law'd to death.
...
a few public executions will get you wide eye'd and walking the
straight and narrow.
...
give the power to the people not the politicians.
Are you for real??
The people HAVE the power, and this thread illustrates just that. We
have the power to say screw the law, I'm gonna street race anyway.
And we do. Seems to me like the people DO have the power... officially
or not.

Oh, and power to the people implies giving equal power to all people.
Which means... yep, you guessed it: If you have 300 people demanding
crackdowns on street racing and 15 people insisting they be allowed to
race... power to the people dictates that the majority rules. Don't
even imagine that this debate is politicians against the public, because
it's not. It's the general public vs. a small group of people like you.
You can't blame the government for everything (I mean you can, but
it's not a very strong argument).

Have you ever even visited another country? Even with all the new (and
old) government intrusions into our lives under this administration, we
still live in one of the least restrictive societies in the world. I
hope you're appreciating it more than you let on.

I apologize for posting off-topic.
