This sounds like the guy that posted on here at one point about having

some weird ones out there since there were a few "special" cars out there.

RE: SD> Does this look right?

2005-05-27 Thread Mullikin, Stefan P
That was the "Birthday Car" It was an 88 Shadow/Sundance Turbo that
built from prototype and pre-production parts for Carroll Shelby by his
workers and presented to him on his birthday in 1988 (there was an
Autoweek article about him and the car in 88). It isn't really an 88
CSX-T. More like an 89/90 CSX-VNT prototype. Eventually, this car had
a 16-valve Lotus head motor and other parts and pieces and was sold at
the Shelby Automobiles Auction. A while ago, it was found and restored
by a couple of S-D folks. Very pretty car and a great job on the
restoration.

BTW, they had 16-valve heads back in the early eighties as test mules
and prototypes. 86 GLH-S number 1 has a head designed by Hans Herman.
It is Carroll Shelby's personal GLH-S (and his favorite car to drive)

The 88 CSX-T (T stands for Thrifty Car Rental) was produced to fill
Thrifty with neat cars for rent. Much like the Mustang GT-350H (H is
for Hertz)

I'll be one to question the figures of 1,xxx '88 Daytonas with an airbag. I
would swear that a LOT more than that were made with them. I see them all the
time in the junk yards.

There were not "officially" available until '89, but they definitely had them
in 1988. No question about it. And quite a few of them had it in 1988.

are you sure what you were looking at were 88 models. the dash for the 88 and
89 are identical. dash design didnt change until 1990. 3 easy ways to tell an
88 from an 89. the first is look at the build date in the drivers door jamb
on the door itself if its still there or still legible. the 89 model
production run started in october of 1988. anything before that is an 88 model.
the
second thing is the headlamp door motor wiring. the 88 models used a 4 wire
plug
for the door motors, the 89s used a 2 wire plug for the door motors. the third
way to tell is by looking at the VIN specifically the 11th digit as counted
from the left to right. A is 1981, B is 1982, C is 1983, so G is 1988 and H
should denote 1989.

hope this clears things up a bit

RE SD> Does this look right?

2005-06-01 Thread Hicks Residence
You're a little off in your VIN info.
The model year of any vehicle manufactured from 1980 on is the 10th digit of
the 17 digit VIN, counting from the start of the VIN Some examples are:
A=1980,B=81,C=82,D=83,E=84,F=85, G=86, H=87, J=88, K=89, L=90,M= 91.
Note there is no i, o ,q or y in this system. This was done to prevent
confusion between similar looking letters and also so model year 2001 could
begin to reuse the numeric system again.
eg. 1 = 2001

RE Re: SD> Does this look right?

2005-05-28 Thread Moparmat2000
actually the dodge daytona did have an airbag installed in the steering wheel
in 1988. my 1988 shelby Z with a build date of april 1988 has a factory
installed airbag wheel, and the stock wiring harness is a 1988 airbag harness.
this
car was not modded to have this. its a factory harness setup. at the end of
the 1988 production model year airbags were phased in. there were a total of
1,859 daytonas of all type in 1988 produced with the airbag available for
purchase by the public at the end of 1988.

the 1987 and 1988 daytona forward engine compartment harness used a 4 wire
plug for the pop up headlamp motors, the 89 daytona with same dash and interior
used a 2 wire plug for the pop up headlamp motors. my 1988 harness has the 4
wire plugs for the lamp motors as an 88 should but also has all the wiring and
the sensors for the airbag. the harness was unmolested until i cleaned and
rewrapped it.

the vehicle total info on the 1988 daytona with airbags i got from chryslers
historical archives. did they make a production 1988 daytona with airbags. you
bet they did. 1,859 to be exact. for 1987 they did not have an airbag. there
is no record of that at chrysler. plus if they had started doing this in 1987
then all the 1988 models would have had an airbag.

just a small correction and the facts

2005-05-31 Thread Paul T. Standaert
Actually, when I look at pre-1990 Daytonas the thing that draws me towards them
is underhood stuff. You should be able to quickly distingush '88 from '89 by a
commonblock or non-commonblock engine. Granted the engines aren't necessarily
original but whoever did the swap would get a rude awakening from parts that
didn't fit.

I never kept real accurate count, but being able to see five confirmed '88
airbag equipped cars out of 1500 in just my own junkyarding the chances of
that are slim. That is why I would swear there were more out there.

the number is actually 1,859 units made with the airbag in the end of 1988
production. this is chryslers official count. or at least what they told me
when
i called them to ask this question a few years ago. i have not seen another
88 turbo airbag or N/A airbag car in my travels to any junkyard. except my 88
shelby that i currently own. most of the daytonas in my local yards are 89
model cars with the 2 wire headlamp motor plugs. the few 88s i have found so
far
with exception to my car had a regular wheel no bag. thats not to say in
different areas of the country may have gotten most of the 88 end of the year
run.
its possible. tho the 3 things i mentioned would prove if it was an 88 or 89.
the VIN digits especially. if you really want to find out for yourself if the
figure for this count is 1,859 or more or less then call the chrysler
historical archives at 1(888)456 1924. i have called them and according to them
this
figure is correct.

Were all these cars built at the same plant, and/or shipped to the same part of
the country? That could explain why some people find many of them, and others
find few. Did a law go into the books somewhere during the Summer of '88 that
mandated airbags? If so, those states are where you would find most of these
cars.
