Re: SD> no compression in cyl 3?
Glad to hear you got it working. Were your cam and rocker very worn? One of my GLHS's was clattering a lot. I switched over to a roller cam/followers setup. Nice and quiet after that. When my Sister lost here first rocker, she was quoted something like $800 for a cam and a couple rockers. I brought her car over here. Then for $20.00, I found a perfect cam (hers was really worn) and all the rockers. Spent about 1.5 hours and put all that in. My brother calls me the next day and asked. "What did you do to her car? It never ran that good when I owned it" Bob DohertyCoon Rapids, MN. Re: SD> wheel bearings Shelby Lancer
If these are anything like that Daytonas hub assembly, (and I believe it is) they are a 15-20 minute job. Basically the 32mm drive axle nut and 4 -15mm bolts behind the spindle that hold the hub in. You may need a good 15mm 6pt wrench to get at one of them. I found it easier the last time I changed mine. But, yeah, no special tools and a simple easy job. The dealership quoted me 1.6 hours per side. I did two of them in my garage the first time in 35 minutes. This included jacking up the car and pulling the wheels. Bob Doherty Coon Rapids, MN. Re: SD> Heim joints for GLHS
Hi, If you're on the turbododge forum, there's a couple links to doing the job. As for the joints themselves, I found this site to be great. http://racingrodends.com/ They have very inexpensive heim joints. On that page, scroll down to "economy rod ends" Then click and get the "male and female" "Right hand" threads. Then the 3/8" size. I don't know what the shipping is now, but when I bought them, the shipping was like $8.00 whether I got one or a hundred. So I got enough for a few sets. (Last I saw, I thought it said free shipping) The rod ends themselves are like $3.15 each. They're more like $10+ anywhere local if you can find them at all. I'll add a link to the turbododge thread that tells a bit about the linkage. When I made mine, I bought 3/8" steal rod and bent my own and threaded them for the rod ends. (heim joints) A lot of people knock the old plastic joints off their original linkage rods. But if you do that, you spend a lot of time trying to adjust the ! lengths. If you use your originals as patterns and build the new ones from scratch, you can get them the correct size from the start and be finished once they're installed. The rod ends to get are the 3/8" size. You will need 4-female ends and one male. You'll need some cone washers for spacing. I didn't know that when I bought my rod ends. I ended up finding a 3/8' ID stainless tube and just cut up 1/4" long spacers to slip on the bolts that go through the joints. Then go to a hardware store and get some 3/8" shoulder bolts and some nylon locking nuts. (I forgot what you call those) Pull all the brackets off the car. You just have to grind off the old steel ball off the bracket and punch them out. Then either drill out the brocket slightly larger or maybe thread it. I think I just drilled and used the locking nuts and that was good enough. Mine has worked fine for few years now. I need to do a few more sets for the rest of my cars. Email me if you have any questions. It's really simple to do. Just getting started is the hardest part. At least for me. http://www.turbododge.com/forums/f4/f14/355579-heim-joints-a555.html I guess that thread was for something else but may give you an idea of where to go for the rod ends. Re: SD> 92 Spirit LE 2.5 Turbo Auto For Sale/Parts
Nick, Before throwing in the towel, there's a couple easy things you could try first. I was told by the late Dave Grove (man that knew his stuff) years ago to try to clear the gov by driving 30 miles an hour and try to shove the car in park. Yes, he said park. He assured me it can't possibly go in, but this will rattle things so much that if there's something stuck in the gov, it will losen it. If anyone else had said that, I would have thought they were crazy, but since it was Dave Grove, I went ahead and tried in. That wasn't my issue. Then there's the tranny that won't upshift at the correct time. The one that waits a while to go in to drive only to drop out of drive when the car drops below about 48-50 mph. This is super common on the 413 tranny. With me, it use to happen after I washed the engine. The kick-down lever and shift lever on the tranny are in the same double shaft going in to the engine. Like the hands on a clock. If they get corroded between each ! other, the kickdown lever gets stuck and thinks you're flooring the car all the time, so it stays in the kick down mode. If this sounds like anything your Spirit is doing, look at the levers on top of the enging and make sure the kick down moves freely. I ruined a couple trannys this way. My tranny problems always started like this. If I had known it was an external problem, I could have loosened it up and saved the tranny. Good luck. Otherwise, the LE doesn't have the same type of grill as the R/T and ES models does it? My grill is broke like nearly every other one in existance. Bob Bob Doherty Coon Rapids, MN. Re: SD> I have an 89 daytona shelby TII/555, my tilt steer...
I'd lean toward Lebarons and Daytonas. I had to replace the tilt in my Mom's '89 Shadow. Virtually identical to an 89 Lebaron tilt. But, the Lebaron had a different mount bracket on the side nearest the driver. These are welded on. Plus, there's a rod that comes out of the column that triggers the machanical ignition switch. This was different even thought the switches are identical. You'd have to dismantle the column just to switch the rod. They're mounted differently because of space under the dash. As it turns out, the 89 Shadow is all by itself. Imagine trying to find a red Tilt/cruise 89 Shadow column. They didn't have a lot of tilt wheels on the older Shadows. I found one in the city and had to drive quite a ways for it. At least it was the right color. Even though the columns are very similar, you better look close. You should be able to call a salvage yard to see what's compatible. Good luck, Larry Bob Doherty Coon Rapids, MN. Re: SD> WTB: Charger Interior Panels!
My GLHS panels were also painted with that same paint by a previous owner. (SEM) They look great. I don't know why, but it seems the same color seats (light grey or silver) in an OMNI rip apart faster than "any" other color. Could the darker colors stay more pliable because they stay warmer in the winter? I have found almost every other color seats in salvage yards that were nearly perfect. Even the light blue ones. Re: SD> windshield wipers suddenly quit
My 87 GLHS did that last fall. They quit for no reason. Then a few days later they were working again. A couple times afterwards they would give me a few problems, but then seemed to fix themselves. I assumed the electrical connector got moisture in it and froze or just got corroded. I never did look at that, but it may be something for you to look at. Good luck. Bob Bob Doherty Coon Rapids, MN. Hi, There has been a set on ebay quite a few times recently. They may want too much for them because they never seem to sell. But, check that out. I've found them in salvage yards quite a few times in nice shape. Usually they're hard, brittle and cracked, but every once in a while you find a set from a car that must have been garaged and kept out of the sun. But, sorry, I need to keep the ones I have. As you know, some parts are getting harder to find. One item I'm looking for, with no success, is the part that keeps out water on the outside of the windows. All four passenger windows have them. Mine have gotten so brittle that they are cracking and need replacing. They are made of metal on the bottom part and have 4 or 5 'clips' that secure them to the inside of the door. The upper part is made of rubber and rubs against the outside of the window like a squeegee when you roll them up and down and keeps water out of the door frame. The local dodge dealer says they are no longer made by dodge. Does anyone know of an aftermarket source for these items? Or how to refurbish them? Re: SD> rough starting
If this happens a few minutes after shutting it off, I'd guess a headgasket or leaky injector. If this happens after the car has been off for a while, I'd guess the injector. If it were the regulator, the car would usually take some time to start while it built up pressure again. One thing you can check right after the car has been shut off is this. Pull the vacuum hose off the regulator and see if there is fuel in it. If so, it's bad. Bob Doherty http://amoparx.net/mnsdacpic/mnsdac.htm Coon Rapids, MN. Re: SD> reverse lockout
Hi, If this is the same part that broke on my 89 Shelby Daytona about a 12-14 years ago, yes, I did a fix that was indistructible. My cable broke or was stripped at the top part where it gets "pinched" in the shifter" Sorry if I don't know what I'm talking about but this was years ago and I don't remember for sure what these shifters look like. The top of the cable has teeth on the flat part that lock in the shifter. We, for a good 6 months to a year, used a pair of needle nose pliers to pull up the cable for reverse. After the teeth stripped. Needless to say, we tried not to have to use reverse. The nylon kept breaking off little pieces over time. What I did was to grind off the flat part of the cable up to the cylinder shaped part. Then I drilled a really small hole down the middle of the cable. (maybe 1/32") I slipped the cable in and ran a sheet metal screw down through the top of the shifter in to the cable. The screw was snug and there wasn't a chance of it "EVER" coming out. The pinching teeth in the shifter itself would have to break for this to fail. It never did fail. I hope this helps. I was a super fast fix, once I figured out what needed to be done. SD> Low boost in GLHS
Hi All, I have a low boost problem with my 87 GLHS. The car was fine a few weeks ago. I did a Heim joint conversion to the shifting linkage and the car has been slower since. I can't see any bad hoses and all are connected. I'm boosting at about 5 lbs. The car is stock. If I pull the wastegate hose off the solenoid, it boosts fine. Hook it back up and it's back down to 5 lbs. The solenoid is fine. What should I look for? I can't believe I disturbed anything under the hood during the HJ conversion. Any ideas? Could it be the 10MM bolt for the inspection cover on the very bottom? I know that one is obvious, but I pulled a tranny at a salvage yard one time and forgot that bolt. It took about 50 minutes on a very cold (12 degree high) windy day to do it and I had to go back a few days later to finish the job since it's hard getting at that bolt with the engine and tranny sitting on the ground. Getting at that bolt that way was an additional 1/2 hour to 45 minutes, instead of the 20 seconds if I would have pulled it prier to dropping everything down. Re: SD> cooling issues
Hi Mat, Does it do this everytime you drive? I know you said you checked the fan, but could the relay be bad and maybe not "Always" turning on? I had a similar issue with one of my GLHS's. One time while the car was running hot, I opened the hood and tapped on the relay. The fan turned on and started cooling down. Another idea, does your car have an external coolant bypass control? Or does it have to run through the heater core all the time? My Sundance had to run through the core at all times. The core plugged up and the car started running real hot. This was in a matter of a day or two. I flushed the core and all was fine. But now, if there's a heater controler under the hood, this wouldn't be an issue with a bad core. Then there's the answer I'm sure you don't want to hear. Are you loosing coolant or does the radiator smell like exhaust? I've had a super bad head gasket leak that would load up a cylinder and start really hard after being shut off for only 5 minutes. "Bar's Leaks" bought me a couple more months without a problem. That stuff will plug even the worst head gasket leak. And other stuff I'm sure. LOL Not the right way to fix it, but it may buy you some time. Re: SD> Mopar o2 sensor
That would be the one you need.I once bought a $20.00 one wire Bosch from Autozone. I don't recomend it because it was a gamble, but, my mileage went from about 18 to 28 on the road. This was for an 86 Shelby Charger. I also bought a 4 wire Bosch for the 90 Daytona and it was worthless. 2 years later, I replaced it with a Mopar O2 and the car was finally fine. The Bosch's are known to be junk in our turbo cars. So are most others. You can get an NGK (NTK) from summitracing and pay a lot less. These are the same as the Mopar O2's. They make the Mopar sensor so they are an exact plug and play. I just ordered a few 3 and 4 wire O2's. They were $38-39 each. I don't know if they have the one wire, but if they do, I'm sure they'll be a bit cheaper than that. These were recomended to me by a Mopar guy that is one of the most respected and knowlegable guys out there. Summit has free shipping but will charge about $10.00 handling. That's why I ordered a few for all my cars. The hat they sent with the order was probably worth that! LOL. Bob Doherty http://amoparx.net/mnsdacpic/mnsdac.htm Coon Rapids, MN. (94 Sundance) Hauled my new GTC top home. (87 GLHS #784) I am trying to keep from using the GLHS's as trucks though. But you know about teaching an old dog, new tricks. I need a Shelby Dakota. Now that was a stupid list. They have nothing to do so they throw together a quicky list. I agree with 3 cars on there. But, where was the Avalanche and others that make you want to slap the person for even thinking about buying one? That Rampage is awesome. There's enough cars out there that make people laugh when they see them. Some of the cars on the list weren't the best looking vehicles, but far far far from ugly. There's a huge difference. Changing to TBI would be more reliable, but I think the milage would suffer a bit. Re: SD> Transmission oil
I agree with Rich. Don't use synthetic. It's too slippery and will damage syncro gears. They need the slight bit of friction to get turning and that doesn't happen well with synthetic. You end up grinding gears. Besides, Cliff R says not to and that's good enough for me. Also, you'll save money! LOL. Re: SD> shifter
Hi Larry, I don't remember for sure what gears I had problems with, but in the end, it was most of them. I have an 89 TII GTC. There's a nut on one of the cable brackets that came loose on me. (on the back of the tranny) All I remember is, it screwed from the back-forward. Once this was tight, it shifted fine. This is also a 555 tranny. I believe I had to go from up above to get at it. .(Removing all the hoses and cleaner) This was about 6 years ago, so I don't remember for sure. All I know is once I found the loose nut, I was mad about not seeing it earlier. At the same time, I found a loose intercooler hose and found the turbo I thought was going bad was good all along. Then there was the cooling fan that was froze up. The head gasket was good all along. LOL. In less than 1 1/2 hours, I fixed 3 (what I thought were) "Major" problems. To think this car sat for about 2 years because I thought there was lots of time consuming repairs ahead. (I wonder if I let the GLH! S sit t he last 3 months for nothing. Re: SD> help with carb problems
This may be a long shot, but when I had an 83 Charger about 150 years ago, I had a tendency to overfill the gas. This would get fuel in the charcal cannister. That would somehow (and I don't remember how) get charcal pieces in the carb and screw it up. I even got a new cannister way back then and had a mechanic at the dealership ask if I knew why the cannister went bad. I said, "Yeah, from overfilling the tank". (topping it off) He said "exactly"! In your rebuilds, did you ever notice any little chunks of charcal? Have you ever overfilled the tank? A long shot, but I thought I'd tell you about my experience. Good Luck. I believe I read that the 413 auto is better than the turbo car 413. I believe it may have been in the torque convertor? It may have a higher stall speed. Don't quoat me on that. I just remember reading there was something that was good about it. If it's a stick and it's newer, it would be a 568. I don't know about the older ones with sticks. Re: SD> Convertibles and Windshields
Yes, the Daytonas with t-tops were just sawsalled by "Cars and Concepts" (or something like that) I've read things on other Shelby lists/forums by people that worked for that company and the told what they did to create the T-top cars. Rivets and no welding to an original hard top car. The hardtop Daytonas are a night and day different car to drive. Quieter too! A lot quieter. But a Lebarob convertible is a much stiffer car than a t-top Daytona. The underside of it was designed to be a convertible and is different than a hardtop LeBaron. I've never compaired them at a salvage yard but have been told that the underside is different. Re: SD> Power Question (Electrical I think)
Mike, I thought the same thing about the belt slipping for a split second. My Shelby Chargers have all done this a different times. Even with new alternators. It's consistant with hitting the gas too. That's why I figured it was slipping. I've had a belt that felt tight and yet still slip enough to drain the battery without squeeling. Actually, this happened once, but it did happen. I've never had this problem with any other turbo Dodge. I don't know if the old style alternator requires a little more oomph to get it turning when it's trying to charge. This headlight dimming only happens when I hit the gas. I don't think the fan coming on would do it at such times consistantly. Re: SD> Chrysler Lazer convertible pics
The Lebaron converts are very well made in my opinion. Since the car was designed from scratch to be a convertible, it was a very solid car. I've got a rusty floor on my 89 TII GTC and am very impressed with the way the thing still handles. In fact, a friend of mine drove the car home when I bought it 8 years ago and has always loved the car. He's driven all my Shelby Dodges and that's the only one he was ever really impressed with. He owns 2-1977 Ferrari 308 GTS's and a 380 SL Mercedes convertible and has rather high standards. Even with the higher miles on my Lebaron, he still likes it. He drove it home for me when I picked up my latest 87 GLHS a couple months ago. Now I had an 89 Daytona Shelby TII with T-tops for almost 16 years. I bought the car at 3 years old with 64,000 miles on it. This car was always a loose car. When they converted those Daytonas to t-tops, they really lost a lot of strength. I never broke a windshield though. Re: SD> still here too
I came aboard this list back in early 99 I believe. At least that's where the first postings of mine are from on my SDML archives disk. (Great source if you can still get one. I researched my cars on it to find out what former owners had done to the cars) I started off here with 2 turbo cars. My 89 TII Daytona Shelby and my 86 Charger Shelby. Both cars I had since they were 3 years old. I sold both last summer to free up space for a second 87 GLHS. Hard to see them go after all the years, but now I have solid cars again. I've always loved this mailing list. Your questions go past everyone rather than get lost in the wrong catagory on a forum. It's great to see everyone chiming in. SD> This must be why there's been no mail?
Hi All, I hope this new address works. So is everyone still out there? I know most of us still lurk on this list. I'd be curious to see people pop back on and reintroduce themselves. That way, you can test the new address. LOL I'm Bob, I've been here for about 8 1/2 years now. -- Bob Doherty http://amoparx.net/mnsdacpic/mnsdac.htm Coon Rapids, MN. V.
