Re: [silk] Questions, or answers?

2020-02-18 Thread Amitha Singh
For me questions more than answers. Answers are organic in nature, they
grow, transform and sometimes become altogether something new over time.
Questions, more or less remain the same often giving rise to more questions.

In fact each question can have multiple answers making me want to use my
life experiences, foundation and situations to look at all answers and
choose the one I can most easily understand at that moment while continuing
to contemplate on the rest of the answers as I continue on my journey.

Without questions my walls would grow higher and higher with every day and
before I know it I would become an inflexible, opinionated and incorrigible
version of myself. Hence questions far more more than answers for me!

Amitha

Re: [silk] How many phone numbers do you remember?

2018-08-24 Thread Amitha Singh
Been meaning to un-lurk to get into this conversation so here I am-
I remember 10 numbers of which 4 are now redundant (my first workplace, my
first landline number, my last landline number and a friend's landline
number that no longer exists)

The things I miss remembering (actually consciously remembering) are
birthdays. There was a time when I'd remember birthdays of everyone I know
and call them up or meet them on their birthday every year. Sadly, I don't
do that much anymore, may be I should start again and give those grey cells
some more activities to do. I do remember birthdays of immediate family
members and some friends but there was a time when I was the go-to person
reminding and planning others of upcoming birthdays.

I also miss making an effort to listen to, write down and learn lyrics of
songs that caught my ears (in the days of the tape-recorder)!

*goes back to lurking and reading interesting conversations*

Amitha

Thanks Udhay for adding me to the famous Silk List : )  I am Kavita & I
head a digital strategy agency in Bangalore called Avocado Tree and am the
event producer of Click Asia Summits in India. I have co-founded & led
another agency for the past 18 years (12 in Calcutta, and the last 6 in
Singapore). I have just moved to Bangalore in the past two months and am
looking forward to reconnecting with folks in India. And I am also now
realising that I am writing a really 'serious' sounding introduction: )

Look forward to some good conversations and meeting a host of new friends
and reconnecting with some old ones which I am sure are part of the Silk
List. : )

Hi Everyone!

I finally managed to join this amazing group after years of hearing and
reading about it. Thanks a lot Udhay for the invitation :)

I am a proper jack of all trades and I might have interacted with a few of
you in different capacities. I play the bass guitar and am the artist
manager for The Raghu Dixit Project, a contemporary folk band from
Bangalore and am quite active in the Indian indie music scene in different
capacities.

I work as a web consultant with my start-up, The Random Lines, and am also
a very small scale angel investor who loves working with small businesses
and start-ups in various capacities.

I am really looking forward to catching up with all of you at some point
and being part of some great conversations here.

Thanks,

Welcome Advaith! Happy Silking... My short tryst with the Bangalore music
scene came about around 6 years ago when I was consulting for and launched
a project called Kyra Theatre in Bangalore... brilliant concept that didn't

Today, my music scene is completely influenced by suggestions and moods of

Re: [silk] The Deadpool List

2016-08-09 Thread Amitha Singh
While on this topic, I came across this article just now - 18 Movies Every
Entrepreneur Should Watch https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/279835

Of the 18 mentioned, the ones I have watched and found relevant from not
just from an entrepreneur's perspective but life in general are these 10:
1. Catch Me If You Can
2. Twelve Angry Men
3. Office Space
4. The Godfather trilogy
5. The Usual Suspects
6. The Devil Wears Prada
7. Thank You For Smoking
8. Glengarry Glen Ross
9. Erin Brokovich
10. The Rainmaker

There are quite a few movies I would have added to this list, anyone wants
to add to this list?

*18 Movies Every Entrepreneur Should Watch*
Yes, Hollywood may dramatize the plight of the entrepreneur. But sometimes
the best way to capture reality is through fiction. Wherever you are in
your business venture, you can glean some insight from these 18 provocative
and wildly entertaining films.

Subject: Entrepreneurship.
1. Startup.com.
Startup.com is a 2001 documentary film that examines the rise and fall of
the real-life startup GovWorks that raised $60 million from Hearst
Interactive Media, KKR, the New York Investment Fund, and Sapient. It’s
good viewing to better understand the boom and bust of the dotcom period
and serves as a cautionary tale on how friendships can easily be threatened
by business partnerships.

Topics covered include finance for entrepreneurs, capital raising, growth
management, entrepreneurship skills, team building and management skills.

2. Catch Me If You Can.
When you hear Catch Me if You Can, you picture the successful con artist
Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) deceptively charming just about anyone
with his skill mastery. Based on a true story, Catch me if You Can is a
classic film that exemplifies the entrepreneurial journey. It touches upon
important themes like creative problem solving, turning something good out
of a bad situation, and the good ol’ hustle to reach success.

Topics covered include entrepreneurship skills, creativity and innovation,
perseverance, business vision, personal sales techniques and
entrepreneurial funding sources.

3. Lord of War.
If you like dark comedy with a good bit of action, Lord of War is a
must-watch. This war-crime film chronicles the life of Yuri Orlov (Nicolas
Cage), an immigrant from Ukraine who decides his route to success is
through illegal gun trade. Morality aside, Yuri’s ambition, tenacity, and
ability to tolerate risk demonstrate the very qualities entrepreneurs need
to succeed. Plus, if you want to learn more about growth hacking, building
customer loyalty, and negotiation techniques, this film delves deeply into
these topics. You’ll probably find yourself incorporating some of the
lessons in your own business venture.

Topics covered include entrepreneurship skills, emerging markets, creative
problem solving, crisis management, negotiation techniques, building
customer loyalty, competitive strategies and geopolitics.

Subject: Finance.
Wall Street4. Wall Street.
Ever find yourself pushed to your limits in the pursuit of power and
success? Wall Street unravels this theme through the eyes of Bud Fox
(Charlie Sheen), an ambitious stockbroker who navigates the economic
rollercoaster of Wall Street, adopting the “greed is good” mantra. This
movie is a window into corporate finance, portfolio management, investment
law principles and capital markets. More telling is the story of a young,
susceptible mind, showing how easy it is to get carried away with the
glamorous lifestyle that accompanies wealth. Plus, if you thought The Wolf
of Wall Street was a bit too much, this movie is a tamer, more
socially-critical version.

Topics covered include corporate finance, portfolio management, capital
markets, investment law principles, mergers and acquisitions, company
valuations and business ethics.

5. Rogue Trader.
This 1999 film is based on a true story of the employee who single handedly
brought down the Barings Bank, the largest bank in England. The movie shows
how money drives all sorts of maniacal behavior, and serves as a cautionary
tale about people who falsely assume that power and money make them
indispensable.

Topics covered include derivatives, corporate valuation, financial
reporting, capital markets, emerging markets and business ethics.

Subject: Group dynamics and leadership.
6. Twelve Angry Men.
Possibly my all-time favorite film, Twelve Angry Men is a brilliant
courtroom drama that has several layers of insight on leadership, the
psychology of group behavior, and conflicting value systems. This is a must
watch, and will leave you thinking about the way you make important
decisions.

Topics covered include negotiations techniques, persuasion methods,
conflict resolution and consensus building.

7. Office Space.
Umm Yeah This American comedy satirizes corporate culture of a
1990s software company, touching upon work relationships and office
politics. It’s a good laugh and will definitely get you thinking about

I am guessing we would need reservation. Is there a dry day rule on account

  Hi,

Kicking off our first Grand Stand with an Election 2009 Special, with
prominent speakers as part of our panel, including Mr. Rajeev Gowda, Mr.
Harish Bijoor, Mr. Ravichandran, Mr. Abhay Jain and Capt. Gopinath*. This is
an invitee only event, so mail pro...@kyra.in if you'd like to be added to
the guest list by 5PM today - April 16, 2009 (Thursday).

We are sending you the topics for the debate : get ready with your
 questions !

 1. The relevance of Independents in 09. Are they wannabe power hungry types
up for sale or deluded do-gooders who have no role to play in the
 Westminster model?

 2. Nandan Nilekani talks about how he was dismissed by an unnamed
politician as neither good for votes or notes. Is this view realistic? Are
 politicians intrinsically corrupt or do
we need a political funding system?

 3. CEO's and managers face annual reviews, why not politicians? How do we
go about creating a system of accountability? Can we recall an inefficient
 MP?

 4. Solutions for a dynamic, ongoing democratic process other than the
strident, sometimes hysterical medium of 24/7 TV whereby public spirited
citizens can make a difference in
improving the quality of our day to day lives?

 5. You deserve the government you elect, or sometimes, don't even bother
electing. Is the fundamental hypocrisy of people like us the root cause of
 the decay in our system?
 *
 Rules:*

 - Each panelist will have 2 minutes to make his views known and 1 minute
 for rebuttal.
 - 3 Questions from the audience per topic either addressed specifically to

 Hi,

A friend who has relocated from Bengaluru to Mumbai for a few years
asked about this. He had his name on the voter list in Bengaluru, but
won't be in that place on this election day.
What's the best option for him? Register again at Mumbai or vote
through post? Is the latter option even available for
non-armed-services folks in India? If yes, where can I find the
 details on this?

jaagore.com is the best resource available online as on date. afaik, postal
voting is not available in india. he has one of 2 options, come in to blr to
vote for that one day or register again in mumbai. if he is sure that he
may not be in mumbai when the next general elections will be held, coming in
to blr for tht one day seems like a better option. hope this helps!

H... are they trying to fill their debut session in India with 10 people
in the audience then? LOL
Okay, okay... 12 people?

Anyway, given whatever equity they have, I don't understand the tendency of
brands coming into a market like India and making the same mistakes, say, a
Tommy did when they came in for example (not that I am too fond of the Tommy
brand, but TED, I like!:) )

Cheeni
[Amitha Singh] btw, does the concept of PPP still exist? Considering
recession?
