Re: [silk] Kindle readers?
I haven't purchased a new book since I got the Sony Reader 2 years ago. Still, this has increased my dependence on (paper-based) magazines and newspapers for when airplanes are taking off/landing. 1) I prefer the Sony Reader because it does support more formats than Kindle (atleast it did when I was comparing them prior to making my purchase). 2) Funny thing with the Sony Reader, the battery lasts long enough that I occasionally *forget* to check the remaining charge before going on trips. 3) Was at the beach last 5 days and finished Foundation and Quick and the Dead and 1 other L'amour western book with battery still over 75%, to give you an idea of battery life. - Vinit -Original Message- From: silklist-bounces+vinit=bhansalimail@lists.hserus.net [mailto:silklist-bounces+vinit=bhansalimail@lists.hserus.net] On Behalf Of Udhay Shankar N Sent: Tuesday, December 21, 2010 8:58 AM To: Silk List Subject: [silk] Kindle readers? Sure, but they're already good enough for me - I can read 80% of the books I want to read in ebook form which was the tipping point for me to give up paper. What phone do you use? Right, including the possibility of hosting my own. I got an inexpensive sheet fed scanner (Fujitsu ScanSnap) years ago to convert my personal bits-of-paper to pdf. Then I got a relatively inexpensive mail processing service (EarthClass Mail) to turn my small remaining physical mail correspondence to pdf (and give me a stable US address that forwards my mail to me electronically). So books were the last bastion of paper in my life, and now I've pretty much given them up. If it's not available as an ebook, or in the nearest library, I don't read it. I don't know of anything that will keep the nexus S running that long except an external USB power source, which is east to arrange ias long as small and light isn't a primary requirement. -- Charles

Use your laptop, sleep or hibernate it when you're sleeping, eating, catching an inflight movie etc and you should be ok on a typical india-europe or transatlantic flight.

Well like I said, I don't buy dead tree books unless there is no alternative (and doing without is an alternative!) I do still borrow some from the library, like David Thompson's Thai Street Food which is a huge gorgeously photographed book on one of my favorite subjects, but I am converting the pages I want to keep for reference into a form I can read in my e-book reader, then I'm returning the book to the library. Given certain limitations of the devices and, availability of content, I'd be interested in knowing who, after the purchase of a similar device, is shunning physical books completely :) -- sankarshan mukhopadhyay http://sankarshan.randomink.org/blog/

I dont shun regular books and got a closet full of them. But yes I have a lot of books on my kindle (kindle for pc, mind you) and read on that. Mostly because I spend lots of time online and also because at least some books that I need are far cheaper on the kindle than on paper. Also - I travel lots, with a laptop, and I do hate to leave books behind in airplanes and hotel rooms, so that I almost never carry paperbacks with me when I travel.
Re: [silk] Kindle readers?
I've been 80-20 in favour of the Kindle for the better part of this year. That's a problem for me because I do have a rather large stash of unread deadtrees on my shelf (which is almost completely out of space). Also, I do most of my reading on my commute to work, and the Kindle is way better in that environment than a paperback. I can see myself giving up printed books for good, once the inventory and pricing of e-books catch up with my expectations. -- Sumant Srivathsan http://sumants.blogspot.com

I read on the Kindle, but I'm not in Bangalore. I've read ebooks on every electronic device I've owned in the last 15 years. Despite this my dead tree collection is quite voluminous. I don't see these replacing paper books ever, however it's quite convenient to cart along a whole bookshelf with you. Cheeni

Have been reading on electronic devices for several years but don't see it completely replacing the dead tree collection. I'm sure I still prefer paper for the books that I want to hold on to. I think it's similar to the difference between facebook friends and real life friends. With real estate prices in Mumbai being what they are, I first check to see if new books are available on the Kindle. If they are, it makes sense to buy the Kindle version because it is less expensive and saves me some precious real estate in my home. For example, I recently purchased books like Comingled Code because there was Kindle version of that book. Current real estate prices where I live (Vikhroli, inside the Godrej complex) range from Rs 9000 per square feet onwards, which is the cost of one Kindle, if purchased in the US. I estimate that my book collection occupies around 20 square feet or about Rs 180,000 worth of real estate. Venky PS: I am now wondering if the purchase cost of my hard copy books would add up to Rs 180,000 :-)
