Would it make sense to pre-condition the coffee filter by running
some plain distilled water through it, which you would discard, then
filtering the CS? You'd at least get the worst of the solubles out of
it before it contacts the product.

Re: CSMeasuring ppm?

Sharon-

The general consensus here on the list is that the TDS meter does not
measure ppm. Do you feel differently about that?

Yes I agree. I think its very difficult to correlate silver
ions or very small particles with various charge levels
to PPM. The whole discussion about TDS and PWT
relates mainly to water purity before the process. The
meters also work after the process and show change in
conductivity but what the measurements mean I have
no idea!

CSGraphs of Concentrations(resp)

Ivan,

Thanks for the graph, looking forward to the next one.
I ran 2 more batches this week-end, one for 1hr and the 2nd
for 2 hrs. With out compensating for the difference in wetted electrode
length(yours 1 3/4, mine 2 1/2) the CS resistance results of the 2 hour run
was 15.13Kohms. This falls in line with your graph for 18ppm. From now on
I will vary the electrode length for better correlation when the final
measurements are read.

The batches were made with the electrode 3/4 inch apart. My 8oz glass is 3
1/4 inches at the top and narrows at the bottom. The electrode are vary
close to the sides of the glass at 1 3/4 inch spacing. This is the only
reason I am looking at different electrode spacing. I like to keep the
electrodes spaced evenly from the sides and each other, 3/4 inch looks good
for this.

Below are this week-ends runs. Although CS conductivity and ppm do not have
a linear relationship I did do some linear calculations(shown at end of
e-mail) using past information. My 2 hr run ppm calculation was 18.66ppm,
again very close to your graph.

Electrode spacing results:

1hr

 1/2.9...@12.1vdc 12.87K
 3/4.81ma 14.94K
 1 .71ma 17.04K

   2 hour run

1st hr.

 1/2.7...@12.1vdc 16.13K

 1 1/2 .87ma 13.91K
 1 3/4 .80ma 15.13K

Calculations:

  From Ivans Data base:

  12 - 15ppm @ 1 3/4 electrode spacing

  20Kohms/12ppm = 1.67Kohms/ppm
  20Kohms/15ppm = 1.33Kohms/ppm

From the above data calculate the ppm?

1hr run: 12ppm + (20K - 22.41K)/1.67K/ppm = CS sol's ppm
  12ppm + (-2.41/1.67K/ppm)=
   12ppm - 1.44ppm = 10.55 ppm

  15ppm + (20K - 22.41K)/1.33K/ppm = CS sol's ppm
  15ppm + (-2.41/1.33K/ppm) =
 15ppm - 1.81ppm = 13.18ppm

The ppm for this run is between 10.55 and 13.18ppm

2hr run: 12ppm + (20K -15.13K)/1.67K/ppm =
 12ppm + 4.87K/1.67K/ppm =
  12ppm + 2.92ppm = 14.92ppm

  15ppm + (20K -15.13K)/1.33K/ppm =
  15ppm + 4.87K/1.33K/ppm =
   15ppm + 3.66ppm = 18.66ppm

The ppm for this run is between 14.92 and 18.66ppm

Thanks for the graph

Bitter means that something is alkaline or basic. Sour is acid. Silver Oxide

It is easy enough to find oxygen bleached filters. I suspect they are
cleaner than unbleached.

I have never filtered my sol, because Bruce Marx measured some before and
after. There is a drop.

If it is a charge effect, the fibers are probably getting the smaller
particles by adhesion, and not by filtration. And some, believe smaller is
better, at least in Ag sols...

Re: CSDumb question

1999-11-02 Thread Marshall Dudley
The only way I can find for carbon to enter into a reaction with silver is in
conjunction with nitrogen, which is also present
dissolved in water exposed to air. In that case you have the elements
necessary to make silver cyanide ( AgCN ) and with oxygen
silver cyanate ( AgCNO ). Silver cyanide is virtually insoluable in water
(0.23 ppm), so if any is made it would be in the gunk.

I have no experimental data to determine if this reaction can even happen in a
typical setup, this is data from the CRC handbook.

The silver ions are released from the positive electrode (anode) by

discussion) as any silver ions that contact the cathode, be it silver

 is concerned.

You are correct in the assumption that the cathode becomes plated with
 silver.

The reason I use a silver cathode is that I can be sure that I cannot
generate anything other than silver particles, even if the leads are
reversed, and if the power fails whilst the electrodes are submerged
there can be no dissolution of contaminating ions into the solution
 from the cathode.

There may be other reasons to question the use of a conductive pot, to
do with electrode polarisation etc. but it may turn out to be
 advantageous.

Question for the chemists/engineers: If the negative pole is a
 dissimilar
metal to the positive silver electrode, aren't we just going to be
silver-plating the metal? I was under the impression that silver
 ions are
freed into the water by virtue of the fact that the negative
 electrode
(anode?) is not dissimiliar and thus does not bind with the positive
 silver
ions as, say copper, would. Why wouldn't the iron and nickel in

Actually the black is silver, which is plating out. The difference is that if
it were a silver compound, then the atoms would attach to the metal one by one,
giving a smooth shiny finish. But since CS is made up of clumps of 100 to
5,000 atoms of silver, when they plate out, they end up as a very fine power on
the surface, which is black.
