Hi Nancy,

Mothball smell.
Leaving a bucket of straw in water will absorb most smells. I have used the
method of boiling
pineapple peels in a room whichn had had kittens in it and that worked quickly.

Re: CSRe: Scabies

2007-10-12 Thread Scott
Sorry about the lack of awareness regarding this post. Anyhow, scabies and
other such pests must have a host to live. They can live for awhile without
one but they must have a host to survive. So, when I dust my house, I do it
everywhere using a talcum powder bottle or something that has small holes that
will disperse the DE fairly well. Make sure to where a filtering mask (paper
ones will work) when spreading the DE. Also, make sure all pets are put
outdoors or take them to someone else's house for at least one hour after
dusting. You may dust your pets after they come back in but be sure you do not
allow them to inhale a lot of the powder. I will vacuum the house, furniture,
mattresses and pillows a few hours after dusting to ensure the DE has settled.
Use a micron-filtered or hepa-filtered vacuum, otherwise you will have a dust
bowl in your home. Repeat dusting the home at the change of seasons - spring
to summer, summer to winter, winter to spring. Do pets after
bathing them. I also put a half teaspoon of DE in my small dog's food for 10
days on, 10 days off for as long as I notice any pest problems. If your vet is
familiar with DE, check with them for type/size of your pet and their suggested
protocol. Hope this helps and I apologize for not responding to this reply.

scratch the surface? I don't know if he actually has scabies, does it
have to be spread by close contact or do the scabies jump off and

Maybe, but it would most likely have to be a high concentration for an
extended period of time, so may not be practical.

The DE should work though, and since it isn't toxic, he could use a lot

Where do you buy DE. My girlfriend told me I could use it in the garden

could be sprayed on plants and watered in soil to help with fungus/bacteria
that plants get. Squash is really bad about that, I think they call it wilt.

It's often thought by the medics that it requires close contact, and more
likely to be caught, because it spreads so, through people having a series
of relationships. WHich is true. ANd so oftenthe case. The mites can't live
long without human host (72 hours). But, it can be picked up through cloth
-towels, sofas and bedding.

Re: CSRe: Scabies

2007-09-13 Thread Dianne France

FIY: Scabies
(SKAY-bees)

What is scabies?
Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes
scabei. Infestation is common, found worldwide, and affects people of all races
and social classes. Scabies spreads rapidly under crowded conditions where
there is frequent skin-to-skin contact between people, such as in hospitals,
institutions, child-care facilities, and nursing homes.

What are the signs and symptoms of scabies infestation?
a.. Pimple-like irritations, burrows or rash of the skin, especially the
webbing between the fingers; the skin folds on the wrist, elbow, or knee; the
penis, the breast, or shoulder blades.
b.. Intense itching, especially at night and over most of the body.
c.. Sores on the body caused by scratching. These sores can sometimes become
infected with bacteria.
How did I get scabies?
By direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person already infested with
scabies. Contact must be prolonged (a quick handshake or hug will usually not
spread infestation). Infestation is easily spread to sexual partners and
household members. Infestation may also occur by sharing clothing, towels, and
bedding.

Who is at risk for severe infestation?
People with weakened immune systems and the elderly are at risk for a more
severe form of scabies, called Norwegian or crusted scabies.

How long will mites live?
Once away from the human body, mites do not survive more than 48-72 hours. When
living on a person, an adult female mite can live up to a month.

Did my pet spread scabies to me?
No. Pets become infested with a different kind of scabies mite. If your pet is
infested with scabies, (also called mange) and they have close contact with
you, the mite can get under your skin and cause itching and skin irritation.
However, the mite dies in a couple of days and does not reproduce. The mites
may cause you to itch for several days, but you do not need to be treated with
special medication to kill the mites. Until your pet is successfully treated,
mites can continue to burrow into your skin and cause you to have symptoms.

How soon after infestation will symptoms begin?
For a person who has never been infested with scabies, symptoms may take 4-6
weeks to begin. For a person who has had scabies, symptoms appear within
several days. You do not become immune to an infestation.

How is scabies infestation diagnosed?
Diagnosis is most commonly made by looking at the burrows or rash. A skin
scraping may be taken to look for mites, eggs, or mite fecal matter to confirm
the diagnosis. If a skin scraping or biopsy is taken and returns negative, it
is possible that you may still be infested. Typically, there are fewer than 10
mites on the entire body of an infested person; this makes it easy for an
infestation to be missed.

Can scabies be treated?
Yes. Several lotions are available to treat scabies. Always follow the
directions provided by your physician or the directions on the package insert.
Apply lotion to a clean body from the neck down to the toes and left overnight
(8 hours). After 8 hours, take a bath or shower to wash off the lotion. Put on
clean clothes. All clothes, bedding, and towels used by the infested person 2
days before treatment should be washed in hot water; dry in a hot dryer. A
second treatment of the body with the same lotion may be necessary 7-10 days
later. Pregnant women and children are often treated with milder scabies
medications.

Who should be treated for scabies?
Anyone who is diagnosed with scabies, as well as his or her sexual partners and
persons who have close, prolonged contact to the infested person should also be
treated. If your health care provider has instructed family members to be
treated, everyone should receive treatment at the same time to prevent
reinfestation.

How soon after treatment will I feel better?
Itching may continue for 2-3 weeks, and does not mean that you are still
infested. Your health care provider may prescribe additional medication to
relieve itching if it is severe. No new burrows or rashes should appear 24-48
hours after effective treatment.

This fact sheet is for information only and is not meant to be used for
self-diagnosis or as a substitute for consultation with a health care provider.
If you have any questions about the disease described above or think that you
may have a parasitic infection, consult a health care provider.

If this person has it all over, that's really going to be tough.
Common insectide dusting powders like 5% Sevin Dust will kill them
fast but may cause some reaction. Permethrin Dust will work even
faster but may be very irritating. I would do those only for a very
few days, then switch over to plain DE. Plain DE will get them,
just slower.

The treatment must go on until all eggs are hatched. The itch will
last for 2-3 weeks because of detritus buried in the skin.

BTW, my own recommendations for EXTERNAL use of any actual pesticides such
as Sevin (Carbaryl) or Permethrin are to be taken with a huge dose of
caution. I can apply Sevin to my body but a couple of days of it made me

 Yea...too much.
Scabies are burrowing mites. They come out at night, travel a little and
dig back in leaving lines of bites...bites in a row.

Got them twice from sleeping on the same couch in an unoccupied log
cabin way back in the Alabama woods two nights, 6 years apart.
1% Lindane lotion applied twice will get rid of scabies. It's over the
counter now.
Cost me $80 in the early 70s to get diagnosed, then prescribed for
something I already knew what was but didn't know what to do about till
after I filled the prescription.
I could have gone to the farm supply store had I known what to get and
cured it on me and a hundred other people for $5.

One drop Lindane insecticide to 99 drops hand lotion.

Next: Boil all your clothes and fumigate the couch and carpets etc.
Those heat seeking suckers can hang around for decades.
Might want to spray the dogs, cats and mice too. [They don't much like
being boiled ]

CS will make them very healthy.

Do scabies and dust mites have wrestling matches?

Diatomaceous Earth will kill Scabies mites. Even Pool Grade DE will kill
them.

If this person has it all over, that's really going to be tough. Common
insectide dusting powders like 5% Sevin Dust will kill them fast but may
cause some reaction. Permethrin Dust will work even faster but may be very
irritating. I would do those only for a very few days, then switch over to
plain DE. Plain DE will get them, just slower.

The treatment must go on until all eggs are hatched. The itch will last for
2-3 weeks because of detritus buried in the skin.
