CScolored type and backgrounds in messages
Hi folks, I've started getting more complaints about this lately... ... I too get many of the incoming Silver-Digest's that can not be read because of a dark purple or black background. I did not think it is done purposely, but somehow in the transmission it turns dark. ... I am having a really hard time reading messages with: a) black backgrounds b) type in colors other than black c) all capital letters. The issue is Microsoft and others who have tried to introduce pretty features into e-mail including semi-proprietary rich text formats, html, graphics, etcetera, and various programs having problems parsing them, especially in complex digest-type messages. You can, and should, set your e-mail program to send only plain text to mail-lists and newsgroups. In Outlook Express, for example, go to ToolsOptionsSend, and check Plain Text under Mail Sending Format and News Sending Format, then click OK. The sad fact is that we will *never* get everybody to comply with a general request or rule to omit such formatting. The best defense is to find whatever controls are available in your e-mail software for turning *off* HTML and rich-text features for incoming mail. However, I can't *find* such an option on Microsoft Outlook Express, so it is obviously not a universal feature. Other options are various free or shareware utilities for removing html tags and other formatting from e-mail. I've heard of them but don't use any, so you're on your own... Or you can use a text-only mail reader, as I do. Barring that, I would be forced to do some fancy programming at the level of the list server (that I do not yet know how to do) to either filter or *reject* messages with such formatting. In the meantime, a *polite* request to the person who seems to be causing you the difficulty might give you the chance to help them learn how to turn off the offending features. Just remember that for too darn many folks being on the net at all is a major accomplishment, and the technical details are not yet within their grasp. So be polite and helpful, please. I complained to Mike that the problem was Realwarts posts (my digest copy turned light blue after his posts and had many extra line feeds, etc.) but he apparently went off list yesterday and the problem has not returned! Something about his webtv setup I am sure. Have you also had the dark problem stop? f...@health2us.com --- Hi folks, I've started getting more complaints about this lately... ... I agree. Dark on light. CSRe: Re: CScolored type and backgrounds in messages
Hello Nina Silver, Hey very nice name for this list! Anyway... may I add that I too get many of the incoming Silver-Digest's that can not be read because of a dark purple or black background. I did not think it is done purposely, but somehow in the transmission it turns dark. It was not happening for months and now the last few sendings are coming over that way again. I did not know others were also receiving their editions this way too. I can still read them though by highlighting the whole form and then hitting copy (I do this while not being able to even see what is highlighted), then I pull up a new email form, hit paste and it comes on the new form with black type on a white background. After I read it I hit delete. As for the caps, I think that is being done to aid someone with poor vision. Hope that helps. However, since I spend too much time at the computer already, I don't have the patience or time to copy and paste. I am hoping the people who send messages like that will be willing to rectify the situation -- otherwise, my automatic delete function will take over. For my eyes, the capital letters don't help, they make seeing the message worse. Why not simply graduate to larger type? Perhaps the list manager can suggest ways in which we all can do this -- but not TOO much larger. Nina -- The silver-list is a moderated forum for discussion of colloidal silver. I have one suggestion for a person who has vision problems or needs larger fonts to see well. It probably depends upon whether one has Windows or not but Win95/98 has a capability for those with a disability to increase the size of portions of the screen.
