Re: second effort
If you will go to Radio Shack and ask the clerk to find you two 12v sub-miniatureincandescentlamps, plus two E5 type lamp holders.you will be in business. The two 12v bulbs should be assembled; connected in series to each other in either leg of your circuit coming from your 24---to---36vdc power supply. This setup will work equally well as the single 24v, 40 MA bulb. Besides, Radio Shack does not carry (in stock) the 24v bulb recommended in Bob Beck's assembly instructions. We have constructed dozens of these devices using this work-aroundquite successfully. Good Luck. RE: second effort
I know what you mean Michael. I made my first batch day before yesterday, and I was like a kid with a new toy. Neat! Can hardly wait to make my next batch (am out of bottles!). I have gotten kinda serious with my instrumentation, so you can expect a lot of boring details. Whatta ya expect from a Jar-Head?? RE: second effort
The type of bulb you are looking for is one that will draw 40 milliamperes of current at 28 Volts (in other words, if you hooked this bulb up to 3 9-volt batteries it would draw 40 milliamperes of current). If you hook it up to 4 9-volt batteries you are putting it on 36 volts. This will draw more current by the same ratio as the voltages, that is 36/27 times 40 = 53+ milliamperes. This bulb will glow very brightly, but probably will not burn out. So...it is ok to use. The only real purpose of the bulb is to limit the current if your electrodes short out (as they probably will), and would otherwise draw a lot of current and drag your batteries down. This is all very simple stuff (for an Aggie Electrical Engineer) - I don't know why you find it confusing - they teach it in Electrical Engineering 101! :) God Bless Dean -Original Message- From: Michael C McNeill [mailto:firew...@juno.com] Sent: Thursday, May 14, 1998 7:19 PM To: silver-list@eskimo.com Subject:second effort first effort - 4x 9v batteries in tap-water We sprayed that particular batch on the garden today. second effort - underway now; 4x 9v batteries in steam-distilled water, heated in a coffee-maker pot on the stove. Maybe if I knew what sort of bulbs were 40mA, I'd know where to look to buy one. Radio Shack sells a 28 volt, 40 mA lamp, in packages of two for a couple bucks or less. It's a type 1819 bulb with a bayonet base, Radio Shack part number 272-1119. This part number comes from a 1994 catalog, but I think it's still good. Small light bulbs like this are rated for the voltage needed to fully light them (28 Volts) and how much current they'll draw from that voltage source (40 mA). My silver wires both bubbled up nicely when I put them in the water. Now, I'm just waiting to watch the streamers start forming... If by bubbled up you mean the rather large bubbles that form just from the hot water (bigger than a millimeter in diameter), then you are still waiting for it to start. The *negative* electrode will start to generate **really tiny** bubbles of hydrogen at about the same time you see the first hints of streamers from the positive (and sometimes the negative) electrode.
