In this regard, those who follow nanotechnology will know that ENORMOUS interest is generated by various nano-tech proposals for new ways to deliver drugs to to various sites in the body. My layman's reading suggests that DMSO is capable of doing many of the tasks that a variety of novel devices are supposed to be able to do -- mostly as some undetermined future time. As always, though, the available non-approved alternative is unpatentable and not terribly lucrative, whereas the new magic bullet gets the dollar signs lighting up in the brains of businessmen and investors.
