Re: [SLUG] quiet case fans

2002-11-01 Thread Richard Neal
1. make sure there is a clear path for the airif there isnt a clear
path through the box you end up with a air pressure in-balance causing
the fans to work harder and so they are noisy.

2. dont setup all the fans so they either blow or suck air from the box
they should be in such a way that there is just as much air going in via
a fan than out.

3. If you have an un-balanced fan often simple things like adding rubber
spacers to the screw nuts between the case and the fan works wonders.

4. You can actually buy balanced fans and tested fans often you can spot
them by the small drill indents in them were the fan shaft is. (I think
they use lasers now to do the balancing )

5. If all fails stop buying cheap fans you tight wad..lol

To round it off high rpm and or large fans are the noisy onesmany
people go for the one small/medium fan at stupid overly fast rpm ratings
and then wonder why the things don't last and are noisy as hell.

What do I use.2 well balanced large low rpm fans with rubber
standoffsnow to just figure out how to stop the hardisk annoying
me.

Re: [SLUG] quiet case fans

2002-11-01 Thread Richard Neal
I should have said get noisy due to less air flow thus the fans run
hotter as they run faster with less airflow and the bearings stuff up
faster.

Actually, fans rotate faster in a partial blockage due to the blades running
in less air, therefore less friction. (This is why when you put your hand
over the end of a vacuum cleaner, the revs increase.)
As a rule the plain bearing fans are quieter than ball bearing fans, until
the oil dries out, then noisier. (you can oil fans by peeling off the sticker
in the centre of the rotor, removing plug, then 1 drop of silicon oil. Do not
 overoil.)
The more expensive fans have better designed blades. the Pabst fans have
blades that reduce the tip flutter for instance, so they run more quietly.

I've had problems with Galeon in the past not finding domains after
 changing Internet connections.

Does it still have the problem if you restart Galeon.

yes, problem persists even after reboot - simple workaround turns out to be
turn proxies on and set to localhost (!!??)

have tried upgrading but there a few dependancy issues to sort out

anyway working with the workaround - can't live without tabbed browsing and
those smart bookmark thingies

thanks,

If so it's going to be a Mozilla problem, not Galeon (it's just the UI).

Not directly.

You'll need to write a a script that does that for you. You could make
it a cron job so that it runs automatically at set time intervals.

extreme cooling kits over the web in AU.
