[SLUG] browser not running cgi

2004-04-11 Thread Russell Davie
Hi
problems with cgi and lots of questions for a newbie
I've installed ht://dig to make it quick to search html on this box.
When a word is searched with default search page the browser returns
'the file /cgi-bin/htsearch/ cannot be found. Please check location and
try again'
htdig built the database and htsearch runs from the command line.
eg /usr/lib/cgi-bin/htsearch words=linux > /tmp/result.html produces a
web page.
However, when its viewed in in the browser (moz), it will not build the
next page.
Apache is running and the ScriptAlias directive in
/etc/apache/httpd.conf is set to the local location of htsearch ie
'ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /usr/lib/cgi-bin/'
There are errors on 'apache start'
/var/log/apache/error.log:
[Mon Apr 12 16:10:09 2004] [error] (2)No such file or directory:
mod_mime_magic: can't read magic file /etc/apache/share/magic
[Mon Apr 12 16:10:09 2004] [alert] apache: Could not determine the
server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName
[Mon Apr 12 16:10:09 2004] [crit] (98)Address already in use: make_sock:
could not bind to port 80
How to correct this?
This is only a standalone workstation box and not wanted to serve pages
to the internet, though connects daily to get email and do www.
maybe this is to do with firewall?
or the 'domain name' ? - which apache can't find and I don't formally have.
what should I check next?
is it necessary to have apache to serve cgi scripts?
or is there something simpler?
TIA
Russell

The big problem is power. Hiring /borrowing /stealing a number of 225Kv
generators is the issue.

I quite like the "terminus" font (in the xfonts-terminus package in
Debian), though it is a little large on low-res displays.

Certainly the conduit and initialization software is all Windows based.
RIM's website doesn't mention Linux anywhere.

Note that the software ("redirector") needs to be running in order for
your (Windows) mail client to notice that you've received a message and
to forward it onwards to RIM's network. You can avoid this if the
Redirector is plugged into a corporate Exchange server if you've got the
enterprise version (which most firms do).

There were a few third party webmail type providers who do the webmail
box + redirector thing. If something like that is available here in Aus
you might have the best luck there. You'll still probably need a Windows
machine somewhere to sync + configure the RIM.

Is it too late to change your mind and give it back?

I lived with one for 3 years. Our subjective opinion was that for our
firm it led to a drop in productivity - largely because of the fact that
it is very difficult to compose substantive replies - not to mention the
fact that it severely impinges your ability to get any separation
between work and the rest of your life. I believe some quantitative
studies by NY based investment banks showed similar results.

It *was* very useful for sales types and senior executives who were
never in the office, but even so, getting one liner replies from people
who didn't bother to read a whole email gets a bit thin after a while.
Also, senior execs have executive assistants who read their email - so
that when the exec actually has a moment to call in their assistant can
focus them on the matter at hand, rather than them having to wade
through an inbox fighting signal-to-noise problems.

Blackberries are very nifty toys, to be sure, but they have a
significant impact on work habits.

There doesn't appear to be; certainly RIM's development platform is very
Microsoft Visual centric (although the newer models are Java based, not
C++ based, they still list Windows 2000 as a requirement - presumably
for the conduit / sync software needed to actually talk to it).

dunno if anyone else answered, but I just got one working for a client.
seems the blackberry check mail that gets collected by the telstra
webmail service. I use a linux box to host the pop3 mail and the
blackberry webmail service fetchs it from there and send it to the
blackberry.
There might be other services, but I don't know much more about it...
