Another option is to configure auto-apt and use it to search the entire
Contents list of packages.

auto-apt search gd.h
usr/include/gd.h libdevel/libgd-gif1-dev,oldlibs/libgd-noxpm-dev,
oldlibs/libgd-xpm-dev,libdevel/libgd2-noxpm-dev,libdevel/libgd2-xpm-dev

Also, even though it's a bit insane, I have been known to compile things
(such as all of gnome) inside an auto-apt session in order to let it prompt
me for every possible dependency that the packages are searching for.

leading "embedded perl in HTML" implementation. Maybe something a little
newer called "embperl", which mentions other implementations in its

All in all, I used to like working with ePerl much more than PHP back

"X" was missing while ePerl and friends just used "Perl as you know it"

So, how about it? Two nights of hacking and yakking.

I'll start booking things iff (definite + (maybe/5) > 20)

[SLUG] Re: simple network questions . How to add a route to connect toto192.168.0.x"

2004-08-05 Thread Phil Scarratt
The Salisburys wrote:
Thanks Phil
explained really well!
works like a treat ... the two card option "A".
BUT Have to disable NAT on 198.192.0.1 to
connect from 10.0.0.x to 192.168.0.x.
So for both networks to use the single ADSL connection I believe you
must have

NAT running on 10.0.0.1 and 192.168.0.1
You should only need NAT on 10.0.0.1 I think. Here goes a little "on
paper" reasoning:

All internal machines know how to get to 192.168.0.x or 10.0.0.x as the
10.0.0.1 machine knows how to get to both networks. The 10.0.0.1 machine
is effectively the default gateway for both internal lan's as the
192.168.0.1 machine will route anything it doesn't know about to
10.0.0.1. To my mind, this means you only need to hide or masquerade
addresses when they are going outside the 192.168.0.x or 10.0.0.x ranges
- ie NAT on 10.0.0.1.

A few eg's:
Src: 192.168.0.4
Dst: 10.0.0.3
- 192.168.0.4 -> 192.168.0.1
- 192.168.0.1 becomes 10.0.0.2
- 10.0.0.2 -> 10.0.0.4 (as 192.168.0.1 knows that eth1 is the 10.0.0.x
network

Src: 10.0.0.5
Dst: 192.168.0.7
- 10.0.0.5 -> 10.0.0.1 (as the default gateway)
- 10.0.0.1 -> 10.0.0.2 (as configured in route tables)
- 10.0.0.2 becomes 192.168.0.1
- 192.168.0.1 -> 192.168.0.7
Src: 192.168.0.8
Dst: www.google.com.au
- 192.168.0.7 -> 192.168.0.1
- 192.168.0.1 becomes 10.0.0.2
- 10.0.0.2 -> 10.0.0.1
- 10.0.0.1 -> ppp0 (NAT'ing the originating address from 192.168.0.7 to
public IP of ppp0 so that on return it sends to 192.168.0.7, which
10.0.0.1 knows how to get to).

Haven't tried the three card option "B" ..does it have any pros
To my mind, it seems simpler to configure and maintain. It does however
put the 192.168.0.x network a little "closer" to the outside world,
which may or may not matter.

PS couldn't find your list mail ...glitch somewhere?
Not sure what you mean. I only sent the message to the list, not to you
and the list.

Fil
Roger
##

Option A: As you have it
Two options:
10.0.0.1 Machine: eth0 -> 10.0.0.1 -> route to 10.0.0.x
10.0.0.1 Machine: eth1 -> ADSL ppp0 -> default route
10.0.0.1 Machine: eth1 -> route to 192.168.0.x via gateway 10.0.0.2
10.0.0.x Machines: gateway -> 10.0.0.1
192.168.0.1 Machine: eth0 -> 192.168.0.1 -> route to 192.168.0.x
192.168.0.1 Machine: eth1 -> 10.0.0.2 -> route to 10.0.0.x
192.168.0.1 Machine: eth1 -> default route -> 10.0.0.1
192.168.0.x Machines: gateway -> 192.168.0.1
To do this:
- make sure eth1 on 10.0.0.1 is the default gateway or route
- On 10.0.0.1 run
route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 10.0.0.2 eth1
- Make sure default gateway on 192.168.0.1 is 10.0.0.1
Option B: Make one gateway with 2 networks hanging off it
GW eth0: ADSL ppp0 -> default route
GW eth1: 10.0.0.1 -> route to 10.0.0.x
GW eth2: 192.168.0.1 -> route to 192.168.0.x
This should work without any further configuring. Machines on both
networks have gateway set to x.x.0.1, and the .0.1 machine knows how to
get to both network arms as well as internet.

exchange for some assistance with configuring my new system. I also have an MA

much :))

I
have:

SuSE 9.1 Pro + Updates
Mandrake 10.0 Official + Updates

Fedora Core 2 Official + Updates

Xandros 2.01 OCE
Peanut

and am
trying to work through this with Mandrake - though if there's a compelling
reason not to...

With
work and two children I can promise that this would not be a
regular every evening/day request, just someone to connect with when...
well, you know.  My particular problem at the moment is getting online
(TPG, ADSL, DSL-200).

Again,
please forgive any intrusion for misplacing my request - any assistance and

Obviously the variables such as "stnumber", "stname" etc.. are from the
posted html form and used as part of the SQL search query.
I found PHP works really nicely with mySQL as it has some great support
for it. I'm sure there's many expert PHP/SQL sluggers out there who
would agree.
And if you're already familiar with languages such as C/C++, you will
find picking up PHP even easier.

Hope this helps you out.

Unfortunately, gconf is pretty modern and tightly honed. The problem you're
having is almost 100% due to GNOME's session support, which is very old and
shitty. We need to fix it.

Open up Applications > Desktop Preferences > Advanced > Sessions, go to the
Current Session tab. Now, I can't give you a reasonable summary of the kind
of things that shouldn't be there, but if you note down the process names in

[SLUG] GNOME slow startup

2004-08-05 Thread Matthew Davidson
Hi all,
I have a Debian unstable box at home. My main desktop is XFCE, but my
wife uses GNOME. She's been complaining of slow startup times for ages,
and I've only just got around to checking it out. (I never buy her
flowers, either.)
I try starting GNOME from gdm. The splash screen sits on "Desktop
Settings" for about two minutes, then another two minutes or so on
"Window Manager", for a total of over five minutes before I get to my
desktop (on an Athlon with 256MB of RAM).
I'm assuming this is a gconf issue, mainly because gconf is alien and
scary to me. My wife uses GNOME every day, and I use it once a week or
so, but I'm usually out of the room while it's starting up, so I haven't
noticed how ludicrous this problem has become.
Create a new user account, and GNOME starts up too fast to measure.
Anybody have any clues on where to start looking for the cause of this
phenomenon? I would guess that since this machine has seen GNOME 2.2,
2.4, and now 2.6, that some garbage has accumulated in the config
somewhere, but I have already resolved one GNOME problem recently by a
mass deletion of dotfiles, and really don't find that a satisfactory
solution. Purge-and-reinstall was a system tuning technique I thought
I'd thrown out with my last proprietary OS.
Matthew.

  Hi Trevor,

  You need a web compatible scripting language like
  PHP, Perl or .. well the list goes on and on.

  http://au2.php.net/mysql for the
  section of the PHP manual on how php interacts with MySQL
  or
  http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/99/21/index2a.html for
  a tutorial
  for Perl :

  http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/backend/tutorials/tutorial1.html

  These should get you started.

  Cheers,
  Paul

HI All

i was wondering if someone could help me, this
is probably a simple task, but for someone thats not done any before it
seems impossible

I have a mysql database, with data in it, and i
would like to be able to produce that data on a web page, so would
appreciate some examples, i don't mind if its simple, just want to be able
to view it via a web page

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Trevor

Re: [SLUG] help with MySQL database to web

This is an example of a perl script that connects to a database of
Journals on my laptop. The MySQL database is called 'Journal'
Note this is not meant to be secure its just a test I had around.

- perl script --
#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
use warnings;
use DBI;
my $user = 'root';
my $password = 'your_mysql_root_password';
my @row;
my $date = `date '+%a %b %d, %Y'`; chomp $date;
# Connect to the Database
my $dbh = DBI->connect('dbi:mysql:Journal', $user, $password,
{ RaiseError => 1, AutoCommit => 0 });
my $query = $dbh->prepare("SELECT * FROM journal");
$query->execute;
# Print the HTML header - note the two blank lines \r\n\r\n
print qq{Content-type: text/html\r\n\r\n

ASF KID Test
Test Database Access
};
# Print the data preformatted.
print "Todays date: $date ";
print"";
while ( @row = $query->fetchrow_array ) {
print "@row";
}
print"";
# Print the HTML end.
print qq{

};
$query->finish;
$dbh->disconnect;
-- end of Perl script --
Here is the output as a HTML page
Its the Journal_id, volume, part, the issue_month, issue_year.
Test Database Connectivity
Todays date: Thu Aug 05, 2004
2 133 3 4 December 2000
3 134 1 2 June 2001
4 134 3 4 December 2001
5 135 1 2 July 2002
6 135 3 4 April 2003
7 136 1 4 December 2003
--- end HTML --
Here is the Journal database table that was queried:
Sorry it wrapped badly so I cut bits out but you get the idea.
+-+-+
| Field   | Type
| Null |
Key | Default | Extra
+-+-+
| journal_id  | int(10) unsigned
| volume
| part

| issue_month |
enum('January','February','March','April','May','June','July','August','September','October','November','December')
| issue_year  | year(4)

+-++
Hope this helps.
Mike
