[SLUG] VOIP Gateway....

2004-09-07 Thread scott
Hey Sluggers,
Has anyone investigated some sort of VOIP gateway on Linux that forwards
landline calls?
This VOIP software would have a specific purpose, it answers calls from a
serial modem, then forwards the voice over the internet.
Example is I would call from home on a landline to the modem sitting on a
Linux box, this Linux box, then accepts the call over voice, then
translated it to voip and sent over the internet to our head office in the
UK, where it is accepted by their voip gateway alerts whoever there that
needs to answer the call.

Firstly, this would only need to be a one on one voip solution (only
between us and the UK), but if it can be extended to accept DTMF codes to
go elsewhere, bonus.
Secondly, it would be nice to be able to interface it with our PABX in the
office (commander system), but again, not necessary, users in the office
can use their PC.

Has anyone investigated this, partly investigated this or *any* hints at
all on how I would go about this?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi all,

I've got ACPI running so the battery meter works, but suspend does not

I'm running 2.4.26, and I found SWSUS, which claims to do suspending
but requires patching the kernel (not really a problem just a pain as
the laptop is a little slow, so I would prefer not to do it unless it
is known to be a good option).
What do other people use ?
Hi Jason,
I think this might depend on the laptop, they're a bit different. The
more popular laptops with kernel hackers tend to be better supported for
reasons which escape me ;)
I was given an IBM Thinkpad 600 last week on which I installed Debian
Sarge, suspend "Just Works(tm)" I didn't configure anything at all.
I did install a thinkpad utilities package (as in type apt-get install )
But that may not have even been required. $90 on some more ram and it
does everything I want from a laptop.
Hi,
I used to have a Dell C640, which worked quite nicely on 2.4 kernels using
APM for suspension, etc. Anyway, that was stolen and I now have a D600.
I've got it working very nicely under a 2.6.8 kernel, with suspend to RAM
(not using swsupd). I've almost always built my own kernels after
install... everything seems to work so much better for me then :)

My setup is largely based on this page:
http://www.loria.fr/~thome/d600/
though I run Debian, so some instructions were slightly different, and
some scripts have been modified.

Most notably, I was getting random freezes when pressing acpi buttons (lid
button, suspend button), and suspend wasn't working, I found that
disabling Local APIC made everything work wonderfully. This can be done on
kernel boot using nolapic, or obviously during kernel config time.

I also use the Dell Truemobile 1450 (bcm4309 A/B/G onboard miniPCI), with
ndiswrapper. I found that for some reason it froze almost always when
loaded during bootup sequence, but if I loaded it just after everything
else (background a sleep 10; modprobe ndiswrapper just before X starts),
then it worked fine. Maybe there's some weird initialisation thing that
happens near the end, possibly when running X.

I haven't had a serious go at suspend to disk yet, and currently don't
have great motivation, as the battery drain is very low with suspend to
ram.

Cheers,
 - Simon

For what it's worth, (most?) software that deals with
video can treat a sequence of files as one.

It's more convenient for a few reasons.

What software are you using to create the files?
Large file support on x86 is someting that has to be written into
the application, but it definitely does work.

Does ext2/3 support files that large? It could also be possible that
your filesystem doesn't support what you're trying to do.

Since 2.4.0, Linux supports Large Files System in ext2/ext3.

Well, as the other poster suggests, NFS is what you really want, but you
can get the same functionality as your Windows box just by using samba.
Are you using GNOME on your desktop? What happens if you enter

smb:///

into nautilus' location bar? If that works then look into 'smbmount' and
you'll get basic file serving setup very easily.

IIRC there's a tool to setup an NFS server on Redhat, but I can't
remember what it's called. Once you get the server setup, you can just
put a line in /etc/fstab on your mandrake box to get it to mount
automatically. The line would look something like this:

server:/exportdir /mnt/nfs nfs noauto,ro,nosuid,soft,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 0 0

Replace 'server' with your server's name, 'exportdir' with the directory
you export via nfs, and /mnt/nfs with the directory you want it to
appear under locally.

The next issue you're likely to hit is with mismatched UIDs between the
boxes, but get the machines talking before you deal with that.

And you'll need to have the 'nfs' and 'portmap' services running on your
server and the 'portmap' service running on your mandrake box (I think).

HTH,

James.

sudo sets both real and effective id to root, so id can't tell you the
original id. Try logname - it'll give you the user's login name (not
id), but it might only work for interactive shells.

Ummm, if you want to fix the directories, you'd be better off running this:
find . -type d -exec chmod g=rwx,o=rx {} \;
Your command was setting all files to g=rwx,o=rx, not directories.
From the find man page:
-type c
  File is of type c:
  b block (buffered) special
  c character (unbuffered) special
  d directory
  p named pipe (FIFO)
  f regular file

Re: [SLUG] 2gb file size limit

2004-09-07 Thread O Plameras
I believe you need to re-compile your application program with:
"gcc -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 ...".
This will enable your application to access "2 exponent 63" file size.
(Exponent is 63 because computers start counting from 0 not 1)
By default gcc assumes "2 exponent 31" file size.

What software are you using to create the files?

Large file support on x86 is someting that has to be written into
the application, but it definitely does work.

Maybe you should investigate whether the software you are using
supports large files.

What a shame there isn't a hint in the docs somewhere about that. It would
save a lot of time and angst. I'm sure it's really obvious to anyone who

Far out man, you've come a long way in 6 weeks. I felt the same
excitment when I started, first it was about this new software, then
later, the license ;)

You're probably looking for nfs, nfs is the traditional unix tool for
file sharing.

> Any assistance/directions most appreciated.

There's a howto at http://nfs.sourceforge.net/nfs-howto/, but it's
probably not the easiest way to go and it explains things you wouldn't
need to worry about. I think your best bet is to try to do it through
webmin, or mandrake or redhat documentation and tools.

To do it manually, a very rough overveiw of what you need to do is on
the file server edit /etc/exports, reload the nfs daemon, and on the
other box you mount the filesystem.

Like Jeff said you probably don't want to do this; really.

To make them group-writeable and world-readable do:

   find . -name \*.php -exec chmod g=wr,o=r {} \;

this will probably be wasted unless you fix the dirs as well:

   find . -type f -exec chmod g=rwx,o=rx {} \;

If you want to the whole tree, dirs and every file, then
a recursive chmod is ok:

   chmod -R g+rwX,o+rX .

This uses the magic X, which means make it executable for
others and group if it's executable (searchable) for owner.

[SLUG] Connecting Mandrake to Redhat server

2004-09-07 Thread Elliott-Brennan
Hi,
Very new to Linux. I've created a RH 9.0 server (at home), with Webmin
interface. I can access the server (for file transfer etc) on my Win2000
machine (easy!) BUT cannot for the life of me (ironically) workout how
to connect my Mandrake 10.0 machine.

I've looked around for directions, but most seem to be about using Samba
to connect to Win machines - I don't need or want to do that.

I started using Linux about 6 weeks ago and have created the server, a
Smoothwall firewall, networked all my pcs and even accidentally deleted
my login profile in Mandrake - I feel a bit like Dr Frankenstein
creating all these machines! I must say that after all my years of
Windows, Linux is VERY exciting.

Any assistance/directions most appreciated.

You have to tell netatalk where BerkeleyDB lives. You might find it
easier to create a symlink in /usr/local which links BerkeleyDB.4.2 to
BerkeleyDB (since then you can swap versions without causing problems
and most things check for /usr/local/BerkeleyDB - no version).

thanks.. but this is what I did:
Did you try the symlink though? Do that then do another ./configure

My first stab is to set X to use a software cursor.
You'll have to read up on how to do it, it might be something like
Option "SWCursor" in the video card section.

Other stabs would be to reduce the number of colours, turn off
hardware acceleration, I'm sure there are other options that you could
toggle.

This would be good if you dont have directories under the location your
chmoding, though given you are using -R I would assume you do.

Try it yourself and then cd into a modified directory.

FILES=`find ./ -type f`; for i in $FILES; do chmod 666 $i; done;

man find
for more file types
