I've boot a cheap and nasty from DSE (dick smith) which works fineI
wouldn't recommend an internal light modem over and external, but as you
asked it so happens I've had to get a DSE running and did with little
hassle.

[SLUG] Samsung / Microsoft Hybrid drive

2005-07-22 Thread Peter Faulks
G'day all

Old news I know, and I apologise if it has been discussed b4:

http://www.samsung.com/us/Products/Semiconductor/USNews/Flash/Flash_20050425_116055.asp

Is anyone other than me worried that MS might be doing with hardware what it
did with Operating Systems? Will the driver be available to Open Source
developers?

I've heard this comment a lot, and it baffles me. Hell, I'm not trying
to stick up for Microsoft or anything, but this is perfectly normal and
they've done this as long as I can remember for pretty much all their
products. XP was Whistler, for example, 95 was Chicago, even Windows
3.11 had a codename (Snowball?) - Longhorn was purely a development
codename.

(...but like anybody here cares :-)

Let's stick to beating them at stuff that actually matters :-)

Has anyone had experience getting the smc2635W card to work under

Thanks.

[SLUG] Microsoft passes da Vista baby

2005-07-22 Thread Howard Lowndes

What do you do when you have a product that is so way past its original
launch date, and has been so emasculated from its original spec that it
is almost unrecognisable...?

Make it unrecognisable by renaming it...

It should give them breathing space to delay it further.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/22/longhorn_becomes_vista/

"Microsoft finally dropped the Longhorn moniker today and “revealed”
that its next generation client operating system will be known as Vista
when it ships next year."

btw, there is an open source thingy like google earth from NASA.

The catch is that it requires .NET and DirectX :-)

Apparently quite a bit clunkier than google earth.

Re: [SLUG] Re: how to edit the welcome screen of gui in redhat linux 8.0

or if you are talking about the ssh or console login you need to modify
one of the rc. files
I think it was rc.local and look for MoTD, that will overwrite the
/etc/issues file

I assume you mean the login screen after it's been installed and all
working. This will depend on whether you've chosen the default GNOME
desktop or the KDE desktop or something else. If you've chosen the GNOME
desktop you can login and go to the settings, login screen menu and select
the theme you want. There's a number of other settings like remote access,
default logins etc. If that's not flexible enough, edit the
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf (look at the [greeter] section maybe).
