Sounds a lot like other Dlink modems I've played with. I've replaced
dozens of them due to similar behaviour - the brand seems to have a
plague of horribly broken modems that like to misbehave.

Their network cards do silly things also. They don't drop packets,
just bits which corrupts the data stream. I avoid them like the plague.

Re: [SLUG] WiFi help needed

2005-08-11 Thread Lindsay Holmwood
I'm assuming you've read the iwconfig man page, but in case you haven't
you do an "iwconfig channel ". Are you getting a 'not
implemented/supported' error when you try and do that command? I've
found that with my card if you just set the SSID it'll automatically
change the channel of the card to the correct one for that network. I
have no idea what driver my card uses, but I know that it's whatever one
is included in the latest Arch Linux kernel.

If kismet is showing the card but you can't associate with iwconfig,
check whether you can see the networks with the other utilities in the
wireless-tools package. See whether doing a 'iwlist scanning' gives you
any of the networks you can pick up with kismet.

Hope that helps!

Lindsay

The kernel has no problems identifying the card and loading the right
module. iwconfig reports sensable things.

With the orinoco_cs 0.13e driver, with the monitor patches, Kismet is
able to see the network I want to connect to (and 3 others as well).
Supposedly, in managed mode this card automagically scans... but it
never finds any of the 4 networks. This card doesn't appear to let you
set the channel (although the windows driver seems to be able to).

The lastest driver version (0.15rc2) segfaults.

Is anyone else using this card or driver?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

[SLUG] no en_AU while installing Ubuntu

2005-08-11 Thread Nick Croft
I'm just installing Ubuntu on my powerbook. The language-pack-en(-base)
has influenced the generation of locales to include en_ZA, and surprisingly
en_NZ and even en_HK.

I can understand the African locales being included automatically. But
considering the input from Australia, it seems odd that en_AU was left out.

Not a big worry, just worth a comment.

I had a similar problem with a D-Link DSL-302G ADSL modem. It would overheat
when exposed to high UDP packet loads, which occurs when using BitTorrent and
eDonkey. I called D-Link three times, each time being put on hold for over
four hours (no joke). Their advice didn't help, and finally they agreed to
replace the modem. This didn't do anything, either. I finally gave up and
bought a ZyXEL 660RU instead (the D-Link's warranty was long finished by that
time). I haven't had a problem since.

zsync is a kind of reverse-rsync implementation, which makes the whole
rsync public-server thing actually possible since the server no longer
needs to recalculate checksums. Potentially very useful for things
like Debian mirror servers where small changes to package index files
need to be updated regularly.

AFAIK, the idea is basically unused due to patent fears (probably the
same ones that killed the rsync-over-HTTP rproxy effort).

(you should probably confirm the details before committing to anything
though..)

[SLUG] NT4 as a BDC to a Samba3 PDC

2005-08-11 Thread Simon
Have been looking for this for a while now and believe the answer is NO,
however I can't find anything that specifically says this.

Does anybody know the definitive answer? Yes I have looked in the FAQ's
but they talk about SAMBA as a BDC for a Windows PDC.

We have a Samba3 domain that is to be migrated to W2003 - one option was
to install an NT4 server as a BDC and then promote it to a PDC and
upgrade the domain from there using normal windows utilities.

[SLUG] How to complain about SORBS?

2005-08-11 Thread Jobst Schmalenbach

All,

I look after a small school (they have 5 email addresses!!!)
and the domain (mms.vic.edu.au) got black-listed on SORBS
(http://www.au.sorbs.net)

I didnt even know that the domain is listed. It was actually hard to find out.
One of the ladies at school tried to send here mum an email
and all THAT server returned "Service Unavailable), noothing else.

I run everything you can think of:

 * graymilter
 * mimedefang
 * virus
 * sendmail is locked down to the bare minimum
   like I am paranoid.

and I know that nobody at that school abuses email
(they wouldnt know how to ;-)) ).

Now trying to look up something about the domain on SORBS
yields "throttled", so I cant even find out why or even whether
I am listed.

Does anybody else have a "bad" experience with them?

I wouldnt even know how the school possibly could get on that list!!!

I want to complain about them, Is this "actually" possible?

SORBS only lists IPs not domain names.

so, by process of deduction:

;; ANSWER SECTION:
mms.vic.edu.au. 300 IN MX 10 mail.mms.vic.edu.au.

;; ANSWER SECTION:
mail.mms.vic.edu.au.157 IN A 150.101.158.78

we are talking about 150.101.158.78, no?

looking up that IP at openrbl.org gives...

"Dynamic IP Addresses"

;; ANSWER SECTION:
78.158.101.150.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN PTR eth2639.vic.adsl.internode.on.net.

SORBS have decided that they have a dynamic IP. perhaps submit a request
indicating that it really is a static IP.

they probably made this judgement based on the fact they have generic
reverse DNS. perhaps try to get internode to change the reverse DNS to
something non-generic.

increase sambas logging verbosity

off the top of my head it goes from 1 to 15
15 is quite ridiculous and 5 is generally considered
ideal for debugging however when ive had wierd problems
with domains ive needed to go higer than 5 so much
that i pretty much drop straight to 15 when i have
problems.

however the insane tsunami of random information
that samba spews forth may be overwhelming depending
on your level of experience etc.

anyway so what im saying is, try turning up the logging
verbosity, its flexible and YMMV

i don't totally agree with that stance but unfortunately it's far easier for
you to smarthost via your ISP. getting non-generic RDNS and convincing

You said it: judgement.

I agree with SORBS putting dynamic IP's on the blacklist.
If you have a dynamic address you can "smarthost" with your ISP.

I do not have a dynamic address and SORBS can only be 50%
sure that it is or is not dynamic.

For that sheer fact SORBS should send you a warning:

"you will be backlisted if you dont do xxx"

and I could fix that problem in no time.

The problem is "something" is getting to their head
(and havent we seen this b4 many times???).

I understand, too, that they need to be a little arrogant,
it comes with the territory, but what they are doing is bullying.
Period.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. I too have a client that has
the same problem, except that SORBS think their IP is dynamic when in
truth it's static. The problem mainly arises from the reverse dns and
if you go to the SORBS site they explain what the fix is - the problem
is that many DSL providers, who do provide static IPs as well as dynamic
IPs, don't/can't/won't fix up their rdns.

I had the same Issue, and being with Internode, I sent them (Internode) a
request to inform SORBS we are on a static IP.
Within a couple of days I got an email back from Internode confirming we
were no longer on SORB's blacklist.

[SLUG] Weird MySQL error on comment

2005-08-11 Thread Michael Kraus

G'day all...

I've
got a text file I use to create my MySQL tables. (That is, it contains sql
statements.) There is a comment in the file:

/*
whirlpool_user_id does not map to any other database reference - just
purchaser's user name or id on whirlpool */

When
this sql file is executed against the server with the comment left in, it
complains of an error on the next CREATE TABLE statement.

Without it - it works just fine.

Using MySQL 4.1 (under FC3) FWIW.

Anyone have any clues?

More
info provided upon request. :)

2005-08-11 Thread Howard Lowndes

Is the form of the commenting correct. I know for Postgresql it has to be:

Re: [SLUG] [OT]: Database Design Question

2005-08-11 Thread Brian Robson

Dear Terry,

Nope, this is not Normalisation, although I thought for a minute this might
have been the 4th Normal form. However, it's probably not even a relational
database, just something for research.

By the way, the original paper on data modelling was written 35 years ago.
The fathers of data modelling are Ted Codd and Chris Date. I am reminded of
the now-moribund PC users group where they were so steeped in dBase that the
slightest understanding of relational databases was impossible. Their
journal published one article on database design which was complete twaddle.

I have just bought a book on XML which has a couple of chapters on data
modelling in XML. This too is twaddle, it's merely a knee-jerk response to
databases that can import and export data and the data definitions in XML
format.

The best way to do data modelling is on the white board in a conference room
with your best users who know the business. Sure, this is not programming
or Linux, but if you don't have a decent data model before letting
programmers loose to build your database, then you will be plagued by poor
performance and continual software updates.

If Linux if to be in the race, good database designs are essential. PHP is
pretty much line for line in concepts with VB/ASP scripts, so good database
design is what it's really all about.
