Re: [SLUG] Netcomm Nb9W - any problems with Linux?

2008-02-02 Thread elliott-brennan

Hi Ben and Ben,

Thanks for the feedback.

Regards,

Patrick

Hi all,

I'm with TPG and thinking of using their VOIP service. To do so I'll
need to get an NB9W - my current modem only has one port and no phone port.

Apparently the NB9w uses an SPI firewall.

Wikipedia lists the following pitfall:

Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows Vista, uses TCP window
scaling for non-http (web) connections. So do Linux kernels from
versions 2.6.8 on. This behavior is incompatible with some firewalls
that use SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) as found in routers like the

snip

Thanks for any information or referral.

Regards,

Patrick

Re: [SLUG] hardware for Asterisk server - Digium TDM400P, X100P FXO??

I'm doing some volunteer work with a non-profit (in Guatemala), and they

expensive for a 3rd world country).

I just want to check with the Asterisk 'experts' that I'm on the right
 track with hardware:

 * they have 3 analog phone lines, which would therefore require a PCI
 card with 3 FXO modules?

Correct. They are the red modules, the FXS modules are green. The
populated product number is TDM03B. That is the TDM400P card complete
with 0 FXS modules and the 3 FXO modules.

 * at the high end, I've recommended a Digium Wildcard TDM400P with 4 x
 FXO's ($US421) - does this sound right?

I have had no problems with genuine Digium products.

 * at the low end, I've recommended a X100P FXO PCI ($US29.95) - does
 this sound right?

I have heard reports of problems with this product, but no personal
experience.

Comments about the above hardware, or recommendations for cheaper/better
 hardware?

I'm aware of the goodness of echo cancellation, a decent server and
an FXS module for connecting an analog handset for emergencies

I assume that you will be using digital handsets. You might need a FXS
module on the card to drive a fax, or as you say, an analoge handset. The
populated product number then becomes TDM13B.

As this is Guatamala then there is no ACMA problem, but in AU you would
have to buy them from a source that has A-tick approvals; I use
http://www.austechpartnerships.com/atp/

 - I think
it's going to be a process of showing them what Asterisk can do, then
getting money for a proper server/addins/cards/etc.

Getting the dial plan right can be a bit mind bending :) Glad to help as
I am about off to do a similar project in Nepal.

[SLUG] support for Dell 725 printer?

2008-02-02 Thread Amos Shapira
Hello,

We got a free Dell 725 printer when I bought a desktop a few months ago but
we can't make our Windows ME (an old laptop we want to use in the office) to
talk to it, we can't install Windows XP on that ancient laptop, and now that
I wanted to finally install Ubuntu on it I discovered on the web that this
printer won't play with Linux.

Has anyone managed to make this printer work with Linux or will I have to
buy a better printer (or better laptop, which is a bit silly because the
printer isn't supposed to be good anyway)?

We are just trying to minimize our expenses on this stuff (the combo of
laptop+printer away from our home office).

Thanks,

AFAIK, all Dell printers are re-badged Lexmarks. Have a look at the
Lexmark drivers and see if there is one there which will suit.
Comparing the pictures is dangerous but it looks like a Lexmark Z1320 so
try the Lexmark Z13 driver in CUPS as a starter.

Only a suggestion.

[SLUG] Trying to create 'brady bunch-style' video

2008-02-02 Thread elliott-brennan

Hi all,

I've googled a bit and searched through the
Imagemagick e-mail archives, but not found
anything I could use. I'm not even certain that
what I want to do is possible.

I also posted this to the Imagemagick mail group.
The only response I got back was from someone who
told me there was an app for Mac OSX, called Grid
which could do this.

I know I'm showing my age, but if you recall the
intro to The Brady Bunch tv show:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=mkeGOH5vy7I

This is what I'm trying to achieve.

If I take four separate video streams of my
children and create four separate collections of
still images:

A0001.jpeg to A1000
B0001.jpeg ...
C0001.jpeg ...
D0001.jpeg ...

I know that I can use:

montage *.jpeg -geometry +2+2 montage_geom.jpeg

To create a two-by-two individual .jpeg of the
four images (very neat - I know this is basic
stuff, but when I found it I thought How easy is
that?)

However, what I want to do is create a montage of
four separate streams of jpegs, creating a related
set of sequentially numbered composite images so
that I can then rejoin the whole as one raw video
file and come out with something similar to the
Brady Bunch intro (an image in each quarter of the
window is fine - it doesn't have to be a complex
as the BB intro).

If anyone is able to provide assistance with this,
it would be most appreciated. Also, if there is a
site which explains this or another forum, a
redirection or URL, if available, would also be

appreciated.

Many thanks to anyone who is able to provide
assistance, advice or information and my apologies

if I've overlooked something obvious.

Regards,

Patrick
