Thanks Sven. I don't actually have a wireless - I was hoping to get it working for a road trip that I am planning. I was trying to connect at the local Apple shop. Maybe best to get a wireless myself and fiddle with it until I understand what's going on. > > Cheers, > Sven > > On Thu, 2008-04-03 at 11:48 +1100, Alan L Tyree wrote: > > G'day, > > > > Trying to get the wireless working on my iBook G4 running Debian > > Etch, Gnome, Network Manager bcm43xx and wpa_supplicant. > > > > I can connect to open networks, so the bcm43xx is working, but when > > I tried a WPA network this morning I get (from /var/log/messages: > > > > Apr 3 10:42:13 misty kernel: SoftMAC: Open Authentication completed > > with 00:18:4d:09:a9:9c > > Apr 3 10:42:17 misty kernel: bcm43xx: set > > security called, .level = 0, .enabled = 0, .encrypt = 0 > > Apr 3 10:42:17 misty last message repeated 4 times Apr 3 10:42:17 > > misty kernel: SoftMAC: Open Authentication completed with > > 00:18:4d:09:a9:9c > > Apr 3 10:42:20 misty kernel: bcm43xx: set security > > called, .level = 0, .enabled = 0, .encrypt = 0 > > Apr 3 10:42:20 misty > > last message repeated 5 times > > > > And then it gives up. > > > > What should I be looking for? > > > > Thanks for any help. > > Alan > > > > -- > > Alan L Tyreehttp://www2.austlii.edu.au/~alan > > Tel: 04 2748 6206 Fax: +61 2 4782 7092 > > FWD: 615662 > > -- Alan L Tyreehttp://www2.austlii.edu.au/~alan Tel: 04 2748 6206 Fax: +61 2 4782 7092 FWD: 615662 -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
Re: [SLUG] Wireless on iBook G4
G'Day Alan, What's in your /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf? Try to start your WIFI manually by sudo wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -D -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -dd and watch the output for errors. [SLUG] Wireless on iBook G4
G'day, Trying to get the wireless working on my iBook G4 running Debian Etch, Gnome, Network Manager bcm43xx and wpa_supplicant. I can connect to open networks, so the bcm43xx is working, but when I tried a WPA network this morning I get (from /var/log/messages: Apr 3 10:42:13 misty kernel: SoftMAC: Open Authentication completed with 00:18:4d:09:a9:9c Apr 3 10:42:17 misty kernel: bcm43xx: set security called, .level = 0, .enabled = 0, .encrypt = 0 Apr 3 10:42:17 misty last message repeated 4 times Apr 3 10:42:17 misty kernel: SoftMAC: Open Authentication completed with 00:18:4d:09:a9:9c Apr 3 10:42:20 misty kernel: bcm43xx: set security called, .level = 0, .enabled = 0, .encrypt = 0 Apr 3 10:42:20 misty last message repeated 5 times And then it gives up. What should I be looking for? Thanks for any help. A lot of people like the iPhone hardware, but prefer to run free software. I can totally understand the want to run free software; hell, I've been actively seeking an open source phone for over 5 years now and still don't have one, despite it looking constantly like there'll be one coming out right around the corner Anytime Soon now. My point is there's better hardware out there if you want to do this than the iPhone! The thing is 2G, doesn't even have removable memory, and the battery life, while bad, isn't as good as a bunch of the Windows Mobile devices I've seen. Multitouch is rad, but it's only useful once you've designed a UI around it conceptually. You need more than just interfacing to the hardware. [*] S60 (Nokia's GUI for Symbian) can be a pain from a developer's perspective, but it's a very nice mobile OS for the end-user I wouldn't call it 'nice', but I consider it probably the best tradeoff mobile OS at the moment. Let's face it; they all suck in some way or other currently! My current phones are a combination of an iPhone for normal phone usage and mobile media, and a e61i for email/ssh/web/GPS (Nokia 3G/ UTMS phone with a QWERTY keyboard, best I've used on any mobile device). I'm relatively happy with this but wish I could combine it into the one device. I'll never own a damn Windows Mobile device again, after owning a handful of them (including WM6 devices; I've owned more phones than I care to remember!). I remember posting on SLUG a couple of years back that they weren't so bad; can anybody say delusional? I can see why. A lot of people like the iPhone hardware, but prefer to run free software. I don't think it's worth it, though. I don't know of any commercially-ready multi-touch implementations for Linux (even though MPX has been a pioneer in the field). You'd need drivers for all the hardware, and I can't imagine Apple releasing any hardware specs. Most so-called 'Linux' phones are based on Linux (i.e. the kernel) but have gobloads of proprietary code on top. In that case, you'd may as well be running S60[*] or something else. There are many Linux-based mobile platforms out there. IMHO the ones to be watching in the future seem to be Maemo, Qtopia (which might just eclipse Maemo), OpenMoko and Android.
