[SLUG] Fosdem
Hi In the past we have had visits to Fosdem by some people from Australia. This year the streets of Brussels were empty of our Australian friends. With this in mind you might like to have a look here... http://video.fosdem.org/2010/ Probably the best of the whole bunch was Andrew Tanenbaum talking about Minix 3 and Richard Clayton talking about Evil on the Internet. You shouldn't miss that one. You can get hold of the slides here... http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rnc1/talks/ Richard www.sheflug.org.uk -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

This time it drew some loud applause as well. [SLUG] Mailing list web archives..... Is this leagal ?
Hi Folks, Today I was trying to find the solution for one of the issue. While googling I found the number of web sites maintaining same Mailing list web archives. My question is Is this legal to maintain web archive of different mailing list/group which you are not owning ? If its not, is there any way to do it legally ? I am planning to start one archive site for all the famous gnu/Linux mailing lists. [SLUG] Re: IE on Ubunto
Hi. Chris Allen ch.allen at ozemail.com.au writes: Every so often some one tells me You must look at this but this is coded for IE only. I am not inclined to buy another PC just to look at the occasional web site in IE Is there a simple solution (cheap) to this dilemma? Yes! 1. Install virtualbox. Its free, easy to install (with aptitude) and integrates well with other ubuntu windows (even copy and paste works [admittedly not with middle-click but with Ctr-c and Ctr-v]). 2. Install google chrome and add the IE tab extenstion, which allows you to run IE in a tab (I believe this is also possible for Firefox) Hope that helps. I am not a lawyer, but structly speaking, I believe that copyright in the individual members' posts resides with the poster. So theoritcally you';d have to ask all the people who post to all the mailing lists. In practice though it doesn;t matter --- in sending something to a mailing list one implcitly gives permission to all the consumers of that list, including third party archive sites, to reproduce the message. Tapas I am planning to start one archive site Tapas for all the famous gnu/Linux mailing lists. But before you reinvent the wheel, take a look at http://marc.info/ mailing list archives. I am doing the tutes on http://www.w3schools.com/ and there are times when its good to ask a person as I do need people contact. I have taken on this couse to assist me in starting up my community net cafe ad to support my daughters who both have complex disabilities and as soon as I get them back I will be home schooling them by distance ed. [SLUG] removing a custom kernel
I have a custom kernel installed to run VMWare. I've now switched to virtual box and want to get rid of the custom kernel. # dpkg -r linux-image-2.6.31.6-custom resulted in the following rather intimidating message. quote You are running a kernel (version 2.6.31.6-custom) and attempting to remove the same version. This is a potentially disastrous action. Not only will /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.6-custom be removed, making it impossible to boot it, (you will have to take action to change your boot loader to boot a new kernel), it will also remove all modules under the directory /lib/modules/2.6.31.6-custom. Just having a copy of the kernel image is not enough, you will have to replace the modules too. I repeat, this is very dangerous. If at all in doubt, answer Yes. If you know exactly what you are doing, and are prepared to hose your system, then answer No. Do you want to abort removal now? /quote Does anybody have a suggestion as to what I SHOULD do? There are other standard kernel images installed. thanks David. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
