I know you got lots of replies, Ken. What did you end up using?

You might want to also check out Splunk - it's pretty nifty and quite powerful
and will show you how your system loads are going and a whole lot of other
stuff too.

Personally, I use Nagios for monitoring/alerting and Zenoss to get the pretty
graphs of system loads, etc.

[SLUG] Artificial intelligence and intersecting sciences user group - first informal meetup.

2010-03-12 Thread Nima Talebi
Good afternoon Sluggers,

For anybody interested - and this is a little off-topic - but to get this
new and exciting sydney user-group going - I'd like to invite those
interested in AI and any of the very large number of intersecting sciences
from this group, for the first informal meetup.

The details of the group and event can be found on the
PSIGMATECKwebsite, or you
jump straight to the
RSVP page.

It's not going to ever fall on the last Friday of the month :)

Have a wonderful weekend, and I hope to see you there!

Nima

[SLUG] HD Crash - recover?

2010-03-12 Thread j blrown
Just had my 5 mth old 1 terrabyte Samsung HDD start clicking like crazy
when I turned on PC. First and last Samsung HDD - I'll stick to Seagate
from now on - never had a problem with them

Is there a utility that might recover some of my data? Disk only
partially used, divided into 2 x 500mb partitions of ext 4 (I think).

Not necessary to have a backup of this data as I can get it again, just
faster if I can recover (some of) it.

Thanks

Bill

...just for reference, every hard disk vendor out there has had a bad batch at
some time or another — and even without that, there will always be some
hardware that dies in the first six months of use. Personally, one failure
wouldn't turn me away from a vendor forever, because it simply isn't enough
information for any reasonable conclusion.

Can you actually read the device at all, or is it failing to respond with data
at all? If the later, you might try putting it in a water-proof container, in
the freezer for a few hours, and then giving it another shot.

That may unstick it long enough to get the data off, or maybe just some of it,
without substantial risk.

Daniel
