[SLUG] watching Channel Ten videos on Linux?

2010-09-20 Thread Brett Mahar
| I'd like to send a link to an episode of Good News Week to a friend
| and I think I found it
| with either Chromium 6.0.472.53 or Firefox 3.6.3.
| Is there a way to view this on Linux?

I just get the digest version of this list (in case this question is
already answered).
This plays fine on for me with Flash (I have installed the flash
plugin in ~/.mozilla/pluginsdownloaded from Adobe). Also if you
use Mozilla you can install the plugin video downloadhelper. It will
show 3 spinning balls on your toolbar everytime there is downloadable
media on a webpage. You can click on the icon and download the
episode, it should play with vlc or xine.
Brett.

Didn't work.

But just visiting this page now as I did before this time it plays. So maybe
it was a problem on their side.

Thanks,

Thanks. I'll try to remember that.
Today I tried again and it works, so it probably was a problem on the
server.

Re: [SLUG] enabling snmp on NIC ?

2010-09-20 Thread Martin Visser
I think the latest releases of Net-SNMP have been tightened up security
wise. By default on Ubuntu, SNMP access is limit to the system description
information.
I suspect the same problem is occuring to you on Centos.

In the line below from /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf to enable read-only access to
all of the available SNMP MIB objects compiled in, you need to change
associated security name for the public community from paranoid to
read-only, which is what I have done here, by commenting the line with
paranoid and uncommenting readonly:-

# First, map the community name (COMMUNITY) into a security name
# (local and mynetwork, depending on where the request is coming
# from):

# sec.name source community
#com2sec paranoid default public
com2sec readonly default public
#com2sec readwrite default private

So the before and after result from an snmpwalk on the interface part of the
MIB tree is below.

First with paranoid for public:-

$ snmpwalk -v 1 -c public localhost interface
End of MIB

And now with readonly for public (after doing a service snmpd restart
in between) :-

$ snmpwalk -v 1 -c public localhost interface

 Amit,

thanks, yes, it seems there is no support for the ifmib

I kinda perused a bunch of docs on netsnmp pages, with nothing that really
helped me, as this is more of a hobby project than a real need, I'll be
happy with polling NICs of the switch/router and NAS, which is what really
matters for this, at this time; the Linux' box sole purpose is to run
cacti and ntpd, I'll look at it again at some future time

thanks again for all the help, guys

[SLUG] www krap

2010-09-20 Thread james
Guys can anybody suggest a www host service that works.

I tested and signed up with http://crazydomains.com.au

Their sys-admin then decided to limit access to /usr/bin
Gallery needs a graphics toolkit, they provide imagemagick but imagemagick
needs the binaries. Their sys-admin are somewhat dense and definitely lord-
high-sys-admins. So they broke a working site and don't seem willing/able to
fix.

I looked at http://godaddy.com but they seem to be oh so FOS. ie 10G space but
only 1024 files max.

So can anybody suggest a no-frills cheap www hosting service.
I need to have a working gallery2 so php, mysql and 1000s files.

Thanks
James

 Hi James,

after searching around a lot I finally found Micron21.

They are brilliant.

They are in Melbourne. They answer the phone. They speak English. They
are techo's that know their stuff. They will help you on the spot. They
know Linux etc. Their prices are good.

I have no affiliation with them other than being a customer.

 Hi Patrick,

For general accounting I use WXBanker. I've also used KMyMoney and

You will also probably need an invoicing package, and as far as I can
tell there are no good simple user-friendly invoicing packages for
Linux yet. (If anyone knows of one please tell me.)

I have trialled several packages including one with an SQL database
and a PHP interface via a web page, but it was very cumbersome and
non-portable. I now use an old shareware package from Windows called
Instant Invoice. Unfortunately it is no longer available in that form,
but you can buy their combined invoice and cashbook package from

 http://www.instantinvoice.net/

A free 30-day trial is available.

I had some troubles with Instant Invoice in earlier versions but under
Wine with Ubuntu 10.4/Mint 9 it's been bulletproof.

My wife is a Clin Psych.

She'd like to keep track of her money (obviously

Can anyone recommend software they think would fit

[SLUG] SLUG Monthly Meeting: 24 September 2010

2010-09-20 Thread James Polley
== September 2010 SLUG Meeting ==

Location
Google Sydney - 48 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont

Summary
  * Date: Friday September 24 2010
  * Start time: Arrive at 6pm for a 6:30pm start
  * Format: Lightning(ish) talks
  * == RSVP at http://slug.eventbrite.com ==
  * Suggest or sign up for a talk below

 Details
Instead of running two 45 minute talks will be having two sets of
lightning(ish) talks.

For those who don't know what a Lightning talk is, it's a very short
talk to get a short overview about a subject. They are great because if
you are not interested in the current subject you only have to listen for a few
minutes. I personally have found that I always learn something cool,
exciting or new!

Rather than a fixed length, we're inviting people to nominate how long
they think their
talk will go. Ideally we'd like two sessions of around 45 minutes.
You're welcome to talk
about anything from something simple as The new idea I want help with to the
My summary of this 45 minute talk or even 5 cool facts about Tim Ansell.

If you are interested in talking, please sign up below.

Don't think you can give a talk, but have an idea for a talk you'd
like to see? Add it to the **Talks I'd like to see**[2] page on the wiki!
